That's because you were probably a kid and now these are grown ass adults complaining about saturday morning cartoons. Over the Edge is a fantastic episode, and my favorite among both shows.
I have always viewed the New Batman Adventures as a bridge to Justice League. Batman: The Animated Series focused on the Batman Mythos alone, with the idea that Batman was the only active hero. Superman The Animated Series introduced a second major hero to this world, and introduced other heroes like The Flash, Green Lantern, and Aquaman showing that Batman was not alone. The New Batman Adventures brought Batman into this expanded universe which also showcases him working with characters outside the Batman Mythos. It also sees him extend his partnerships beyond Robin by working not just with Batgirl and Nightwing, but other heroes like Superman. This sets through stage for Justice League where Batman not only works as a partner alongside other heroes, but forces the Dark Knight to tackle the more sci-fi, mythical, and magical aspects of the DC Universe. Of course, this was not planned out at the time, but when looking at the shift in tone for The New Batman Adventures, it makes sense if you look at it as a bridge towards Justice League .
Me too. If anything reruns of The Batman Adventures is what got me back into DC right before Justice League aired when I was in middle school. I was born in 90, so the BTAS was out when I was still a toddler so I obviously didn’t appreciate it until I got older but, Cartoon Network showed mostly reruns of Batman adventures. So I could never hate on it.
I loved Batman TAS...but I also really loved the Batman/Superman hour. Where one Batman and one Superman episode were shown back to back. That was always a delightful hour of television.
I remember being very annoyed when they changed up the art style the day "Holiday Knights" aired. But now looking back, I'm glad we got a pretty solid "Bat-Family" show, with a few episodes that could stand up with TAS any day. That one when the girl finds out she's Clayface... I was about Tim Drake's age when that aired. I wasn't expecting to be that sad on a Saturday morning...
For me TNBA is both the bridge between Batman TAS and the larger DCAU as well the bridge between BTAS and Batman Beyond. In the first case, it shows Batman's wolrd evolving, going from this grounded noir crime drama to more fantastic sci-fy side of Batman. Instead of fighting mobsters, Batman is now having to deal with more super villains, mad scientists and other weird opponents. On the other, it shows the beginning of Bruce losing his humanity to his Batman persona, cleary a result of Batman spending so much time fighting this monsters that, by TNBA point, he's finally suffering from burnout, no longer showing the same level of emotions as before (all this represent by Kevin Conry, whose voice slowly loses it's distiction each series). He's just a stern vigilante focus is only on the mission. All this lead tos Batman becoming the Old Man Bruce from Batman Beyond. No longer a charismatic billionaries, just old man alone living in his mansion, with batcave full of trophies and memories from his past life.
I was always able to accept the change between styles because it was building towards a larger shared universe. TAS wouldn't have transitioned as well to a more streamlined style. I still say that was the coolest Scarecrow we've ever had. And the fact that they got veteran horror actor Jeffrey Combs (Reanimator, Frighteners) to voice him was icing on the cake. I actually met his brother when I briefly worked at a liquor store. I know the show took a slight dip in quality as far as writing, but the creators had a lot on their plate and it paved the way to better shows. After that was Batman Beyond, Justice League, and JL Unlimited. Those were stellar shows. Still the best Justice League ever put to screen in my opinion. TNBA may have had a couple of missteps, but they were mistakes I feel they learned from. Regardless of anything, the body of work they produced between TAS and JLU is some of the best animated shows we've ever had. They still hold up over time and it's still great for all ages. When I'm old and gray, I'll probably watch those cartoons.
@@largefactory I’m a bat-freak, but watching it again and again still gives me that really good feeling you get when a show captures your imagination perfectly… part of it might even be because I anticipated the JL show so much, but that bat-focused opener was so far beyond and not what I’d been expecting…
Joker's design is not good for this phase. I always maintain thay his Justice League/Beyond Return pf the Joker flashback look is the best. World's Finest is one of the best crossovers.EVER. It's still the best Batman V Superman out there. All the crossovers w the Supercrew were fun and you could tell the writers and actors loved doing them.
For me, TNBA was a show with higher highs, and lower lows. The stuff that worked was very strong, but things that didn't hurt more. It makes sense in the context of updating for a new network and a more shared universe with Superman and later Justice League. I do still mostly prefer the more grounded nature of the original BTAS, where the fantastical and super-powered stuff was usually technological in nature.
TNAB is a different show. It just exists in the same continuity. Just like Static Shock, Batman Beyond or Justice League are different shows but in the same continuity. When I was a kid, I viewed it as the same show, but after the end of JLU, I am able to look back and recognize the distinction. It then allows me the ability to appreciate it without any of the disappointment.
This video put into words why I always thought TNBA seemed like a watered-down BTAS - it never even tried to pull off the emotional punch of episodes like "Heart of Ice" or "Baby Doll". However, BTAS may not have done justice to "Old Wounds" or "Never Fear"... I only wish they hadn't completely trashed Riddler.
Don't forget Batman the Animated Series was inspired by Max fleischer's Superman which was also confirmed by the editors at DC Comics who I was blessed to meet back in 1990 at Sotheby's auction in preparation for the upcoming animated series
As a 10 year old I was just happy to get new episodes and kind of liked the small redesigns. Also I was the right age to enjoy more Robin, Nightwing, & Batgirl
i loved how this series also allowed for a new future batman in batman beyond to be created. it felt like a natural next step that i didnt know i wanted or needed. bruce wayne is batman, and i never liked the idea of anyone else taking that mantle, except for terry. it just worked
Batman's new design in TNBA reminds me alot of the frank miller batman design the black and grey color scheme and the muscle, While the original design had the blue and grey motif which was reminiscent of adam west Goes to show how bats developed from empathetic and compassionate to alot more stoic and darker
I think the Nightwing episode old wounds really made that season a notable one that season a notable one. I actually consider it my favorite episode of the whole series
What’s strange to me is that in the 90’s Spider-Man cartoon, Spidey wasent allowed to punch anyone(ordered by the FCC) since it was a kid’s cartoon..But those same rules didn’t apply to the 90’s Batman animated shows..He was always cracking people in the mouth..I would’ve thought the same rules would apply to both shows being they were on roughly about the same time
Different censors. In Batman Animated, Bruce Timm talks about how the WB let them be more violent. Fox Kids did not. So in the final season, they got the opportunity to be darker, and the WB allowed it.
Honestly I never saw this season as so incredibly different than the animated series. The essence is still there. The only nitpicks I had were that Riddler should have still worn a suit (though that perspective might have been influenced by the Arkham games, in my mind) and that joker should have had a bit more color.
this season had some incredible episodes. This was used to build that bigger animated universe. This led to batman beyond, justice league & etc. They explained everything in this season. remember this wasnt on fox kids but switched to the wb. different studios different designs
Regardless of its flaws, TNBA not only brought us a more stylized consistency for the DCAU in The New Batman/Superman Adventures, it also provided us Batman: Gotham Adventures, one of the best comic book titles of all time.
Tbh other than the look. TNBA is perfect as a continuation of btas. Honestly it had just as much darkness and story telling and I really don’t see how it feels like a”different show” I watched it as season 4 of btas and right after it. It was great.
I wouldn’t commit to the art style change indicating a whole new series. American Dragon Jake long also had a pretty drastic art direction change yet continued the story line.
Completely agree. I have no idea what these fans are talking about. It completely refined the original series, improving on it in almost every possible way. - The action is better - The characters have more depth to them - Less censorship - Dialogue is better - Interaction between characters are better - Better pacing - And yes for the most part the designs are better and more sleek.
Yep, and I like that Batman became more brooding and dark. It was something he was wrestling with in the original series that actually got the better of him. @@blueblur2273
The point was to make the animation more kid-friendly and get smaller kids into the stories. That's where the main sales for the toys happened back in the '90s.
The design had to change due to licensing. Fox owned the Batman TAS license and WB picked up the contract after BTAS ended. From a merchandise point of view WB needed the show to look different so they could sell toys and merchandise under the Kids WB brand
@robertrogers074 Bruce Timm team could sometimes be overloaded with work. So they hired an outside company over in Japan to help them sometimes. So when they would be swamped with things to do, they would have the team in Japan animate for them.
@blueblur2273 Much of the series was animated by Korean and Japanese studios. Bruce Timm and his team did character designs and storyboards but studios liked TMS and Dong Yang handled animation of the series
Okay, it's never been debated that The New Batman Adventures was a new series that took place in the DC Animated Universe. The reason the styles changed was because Batman: The Animated Series and The Adventures of Batman & Robin were aired on FOX Kids. After Batman & Mr Freeze: Subzero went direct to video that ended the style that was on FOX . The New Batman Adventures was aired on KidsWB alongside Superman: The Animated Series, eventually putting out a block called The New Batman/Superman Adventures after their crossover. They changed the style to better match the look of Superman: TAS. For me it wasn't jarring because I was there watching as it aired and just thought "Oh, it's a new style" I was never in the mindset that suddenly it's a new continuity.
One of my biggest pet peeves are the people who INSIST on separating this from BTAS. No, it's all BTAS. Just because art style changed doesn't mean it isn't BTAS.
For me, what really lowered this show was how Batman was characterized. I didn’t like how cold and grim he was all the time, even as Bruce Wayne. I always like Batman to, with Alfred and his allies, have some humanity and warmth show through, that little Denny O’Neil heart. TNBA is still a good show. I just think it’s not a good sequel to BTAS. That said, I do think Bruce’s characterization bounced back by Justice League, which matches with how he feels more like the same character from BTAS when he’s around Superman and other major DC heroes from outside Gotham.
I always felt that Bruce's change in attitude was bitterness over the way things ended with Dick Grayson and the fact that no matter how hard he tried he was fighting a never ending battle alone in Gotham. Yes, he has Batgirl and Tim's Robin, but they were much younger than Bruce and were junior partners. Working alongside the Justice League allowed Batman to work alongside other heroes that were not just his partners, but his peers. This showed Batman that he no longer had to shoulder the burden alone and he had allies who were committed to helping him save innocent people and upholding justice. You see this in Justice League and Unlimited where he often jokes with Superman or is one of the few people to get through when he thinks Superman has lost his way. Or the episode of Unlimited where he shows tons of respect towards the Flash, seeing him as a hero. Being on the Justice League brought back Bruce's humanity which he lost after spending years fighting crime in Gotham. Which makes it even more tragic when the Joker cruelly takes that away by torturing Tim Drake.
@@caryslan5890but why end with Dick like that? I hated it as a kid they did that. NBA Batman is almost a different character. There's that BTAS episode Batman does an April fools joke with Alfred and its great. The new Batman would never do that and that sucks. Not to mention Mr Freeze? Two Faces poor arc, Selina. It just kinda sucks.
Agreed, I get that Batman is a dark character but in TNBA he felt too serious, he kinda comes off as a prick at times, I prefer the one more in the original animated series, he just had more character, felt more human.
Your channel is one of my favorites on all of TH-cam, informative, professional, and steeped in a topic that I love. Ojalá más personas de la comunidad hispanohablante conocieran tu contenido. 🖤
I loved all the versions. They all had their own take. Which is fine. I mean who would have thought that Michael Keaton would've made such an awesome Bruce Wayne/Batman or Jack would make such a great Joker ?
Favorite episode from this season and I think the entire show might be mad love. Second favorite from this season is over the edge. Edit: Oh and of course double take
I truly think presenting it on DVD and Blu Ray as simply part of BTAS was a mistake. The show should have been presented as It's own thing. Maybe up to and including having it's own new title sequence, or perhaps even presented accurately as the Batman/Superman Adventures. Tacking it on to the end of BTAS does it no favors.
It's a shame that when people talk about this show, they don't usually talk about the episodes themselves. They just talk about the characters designs and that's it. I think the stories in this show are just as good as BTAS. Also when I was a kid I had a crush on this Batgirl/Barbara Gordon lol
TNBA had very amazing episodes and messages . It was a nice show. But, BTAS is art honestly. I wish they would have found a way to capture the BEAUTY and GRAND SCALE and NOIR storytelling while maturing and evolving in their creativity. TNBA is great but, Nothing can match up to the greatest animated cartoon ever. I am keeping an open mind but,... this is tough.... Art is art because it is drawn by artists . but... ART (and not just the animation style. The heart, soul, characters, feel but still always innovative) is ART. It is clear. It is obvious. The best of its kind. I don't know what to say.... BTAS is a Masterpiece. Because that is Batman. TNBA is very great.
I liked it as much as the previous seasons. Some things were better, some worse. But I never got the hate for it. Shame it didn't get one more season as there was so much potential still there. Other than the animation style it wasn't that different.
TNBA was always the best season of BTAS to me, some of the redesigns i wasn't a fan of, but for the most part I loved it and always looked it as a proper continuation of the other BTAS seasons, just an art change.
Brooooo I had that same VHS and absolutely wore it out. I love the bit in the nightclub. The little kick to the head Batman gives Superman for no reason lol
Kevin Conroy will always be Vengeance, The Knight, The Batman. Michael Keaton was instrumental for Batman. And Michael Keaton changed his voice when he was Bruce Wayne/Batman. Kevin did the same but on a much grander scale. Kevin Conroy is the GOAT of Batman. Rest in peace Kevin. You were an amazing human being.
At least we got an AWESOME Firefly introduction and episode. Mad Hatter’s ‘mind-controlled circus animals’ episode and Scarecrow’s ‘Never Fear’ subway gas attack were good too (did they make that _after_ the Tokyo subway sarin attacks??) . . .
It boils down to this. TNBA was not bad. It is a good show. And I love the positivity. But... BTAS is a MASTERPIECE. While the animators had to grow and mature, I wish they did it in a way that kept its beauty and did not just throw a masterpiece away.TNBA was good but growth should also mean becoming better. And I can 1000000% see BTAS Batman working with a Justice League team . TNBA was a great Batman cartoon. BTAS was a work of art. A Masterpiece. Animation at its finest. Even Bruce timm and co. Know that. That is why they said that "Batman : Caped crusader" (their new show) will be more reminiscent and look and feel like BTAS. TNBA is great, but BTAS is Batman .
Dude, I just wanted to let you know, that you are the best comic historian I’ve ever watched. In my opinion, No one does stuff like this as good as you
I was interdused into comics watching the Timm verse and grew up watching it instead of comics.I think if you're more of a comic book person instead of just watching TV it might leave you wanting something more, but I loved it all BTAS STAS TNBA Batman beyond. JLU
Batgirl is hot af in this show. Her long red hair, her blue eyes, her black lipstick, her gorgeous smile, her sultry voice, her slim/curvy body, her long/skinny legs, her sexy ass and she's a strong, independent, intelligent and badass woman.
TNBA has some changes that I cant fully agree with, mostly with the design of some of the characters. But overall I can give the show props for going into a new and interesting directions from BTAS.
So strange, ive been watching a few episodes of batman the animated series before bed lately and now i open youtube and was randomly recommended this video! But im glad I was, this was awesome and now you have a new subscriber and im going to check out more of your videos
I much prefer TNBA to B:TAS. I prefer all of the TNBA character redesigns to the original B:TAS character designs with the exception of The Riddler. I find TNBA far more aesthetically pleasing than B:TAS. I was born in '98, so by the time I was born both B:TAS and TNBA existed, and therefore I didn't experience the jarring aspect of the switch occurring. I enjoyed playing with my TNBA-style toys more than my B:TAS-style toys, so as far as selling toys go, the TNBA changes worked for me in that way as well. If we're grouping TNBA in with B:TAS to rank episodes, while my #1 episode would be "Heart of Ice", the overwhelming majority of my other favorite episodes come from TNBA. #Batman
The statement that "...Batman TAS was more faithful to the comics than The New Batman Adventures" is in degrees of relativity. Example: In the comics and the 1960s live action series, Barbara Gordon was a college graduate when she first became Batgirl, not a high school student like the Betty Kane Bat-Girl! BOTH animated series made slight changes to "established mythos", which is why I enjoyed both. However, I do prefer the design work from TAS to that of TNBA!
BtAS was a better show. New Batman show felt simpler, cheaper, more campy, less innovative and more kid friendly (likely mandated by the studio execs). The new designs were generally awful in comparison (except Scarecrow who was awesome). It still had fantastic episodes. It was a world that blended better with Superman. While I do enjoy the team ups, I always felt Batman worked better as a standalone. All these villains Batman struggled against so much are easily defeated by Superman. He could defeat all the villains in a weekend visit. Also the idea of a kid Robin is stupid. Comic history be damned. Placing a child in harm's way against armed criminals is fucking insane. What happens to him (and in the comics) is Batman's fault. There's a reason why we don't allow children to be police officers too. And putting him bright colors? I know they try to explain the bright colors in the comics, but it's still stupid. He's there to appeal to kids. But no kid has ever wanted to play Robin. We all wanted to be Batman.
Regarding the redesigns of a loth of the characters, a lot of the villains look great and some basically the same. Man-Bat (who only appears in the tie-in comics), Harley Quinn and Ra's al Ghul's look identical (if anything Harley looks a bit better in TNBA). Two-Face and Clayface also look basically the same just a bit adjusted for the new art style (although they looked a bit better in BTAS). I personally prefer the Catwoman and Penguin designs in TNBA because they are more comic accurate. Joker looks equally great with his Batman Beyond and JL designs if not a bit scarier (but his TNBA design is not good). The only characters I definitely agree look inferior are Killer Croc, Riddler, Ventriloquist and Mr. Freeze. Bane doesn't look great in either BTAS or TNBA. In TNBA he has a better outfit (minus the spikes) but in BTAS he has a better mask although it's still inferior to the the one he has in the comics. Mad Hatter I prefer his short stature and green attire in TNBA I'm not a fan of the white hair and the way they drew his face because he looked way older as opposed to his BTAS design. For Poison Ivy I love both her designs because they signify her character progression by showing her become more and more plant like as she sheds her humanity. And I think it goes without saying considering that pretty much everyone involved with BTAS and especially Bruce Timm hated Scarecrow's design prior to his TNBA redesign that he looked best in TNBA. Along with that Batgirl's redesign was possibly the biggest improvement. The gray and blue suit she had was okay but It did just feel like a clone of Batman's suit and even though I know that's the point in the beginning, the all-black suit with yellow and blue accents is so much more striking and memorable and is the one to have made more cultural impact.
hated with passion the first time, hated even more after all those years. Without Over The edge, trial and the Clayface girl episodes, i think we were not even here to talk about if it was good or not this giant mess we call "New" adventures..
Love the WB/DC animated universe they did. And TNBA and Superman were better than any animated superhero show then. Nothing is the same on superhero animated shows since.
The thing that bothers me about an animated series is how little it changes over time. Yes, if you have a great look, you don't want to tamper with that too much, but as you point out, the viewer (and the creators) can get tired of it over time. In a comic book, both writers and artists can change rather frequently, and while that can hurt the sales of comic where the readers liked a certain writer/artist combination, it also allowed for different styles and stories to be told, or for readers to find a new writer/artist they like. As an example of this in animated cartoons, when Scooby Doo dreamed meeting with other Hanna Barbara characters in a Mystery Incorporated episode, it switched to a retro animated style entirely different from the regular art style.
This is why I like anime, because things do change. The art style and story evolve. Take something like Dragon Ball, and you see a massive shift not just in the story or the fact that new allies and Villians are introduced, but the art style changes while characters like Gohan grow up. . Compare that to the Simpsons which still uses the same status quo as when the show debuted in 1989. Yeah, the art got better over time, but the family is the same age as they were over thirty years ago. But look at Batman in the DCAU. He goes from fighting mobsters and his rouges gallery with adventures largely contained in Gotham to going on adventures with the Justice League where he fights aliens, gods, magic users, and even a time traveler just to name a few The DCAU felt like an evolving universe and Batman is the poster boy for this since he was there from the beginning. You can see the universe evolve around him, change him, and there's tons of appeal in that.
@@caryslan5890 Dragon Ball seems to be it's own thing in fairness to anime, I've seen more shows where they just flat out end the series with a massive kill off than a show that grew up with the kids like Dragon Ball into DBZ. Simpsons and the adult cartoon shows following the Flintstones are kind of their own thing except King of the Hill which did age characters a little. I'd view those more as just sitcoms and they don't change much even with live actors. I think that's a lot of the issue is DC works best the more terra firma it is because ultimately Superman and Batman aren't above helping the average person. The X-men and Avengers are "heroes" that never actually help anyone other than themselves or the shadowy government they work for. When's the last time Wolverine foiled a robbery? When did Iron Man solve a murder? Spider-man is the only one helping the average joe of the big names out there on the Marvel side. It's weird to think Marvel got big because their heroes were more grounded yet in actual action their heroes are basically tied up in their own drama with no real help to anyone else. Gee wouldn't it be nice if Professor X would tell us the dark plans of the elites or maybe stop a war? Nah mutant civil rights, because God forbid maybe we'd help our cause more if Cyclops goes and blasts a cartel drug lord or maybe the Avengers go win the War on Terror? I know I know they gotta be villians clad in purple all the time. Prince must have been the ultimate villain in their world since he had more purple than Thanos, Apocalypse, and Magento combined.
Half of the 4th season of the animated series had a different opening sequence and introduced newer characters, obviously the animation style was changed to appear like that of superman and jstice league, with a sleeker more modern style, as opposed to the 1940's style. Some of the character designs were also changed to resemble the live action appearances. The point of the new series was to show a batman who was part of a larger world with other heroes and darker subject matter. Over all both series are part of the same series.
I love The New Batman Adventures and feel like it gets a bad rap. If it wasn’t for Kids’ WB! and The WB saving Batman: The Animated Series, and bringing it over to The WB and Kids’ WB!, we wouldn’t have the DCAU and shows like Batman Beyond.
Great content. My only gripe with these videos is that as a kid we did not care. It’s BATMAN. And nightwing was the 🐐. Seeing Richard Grayson as nightwing was amazing especially stepping out of the Robin shadow. Will say this, the toys were not great compared to the TAS toys.
I always loved the new art style and understood as a kid why they changed it and they were always up front why they changed it so it would match better with superman the animated series and it wasn't until reruns they started using the original animated series credits because at first they used "the new adventures of Batman and superman" opening credits!
For my part, the new animated adventures are what I have in my head as the default animated version of the characters. I guess I just saw those episodes more growing up.
The New Batman Adventures isn't that bad. The problem is, the sophistication was absent. I loved Batman's design more than in the original animated series, though.
I figured the series, changed because Bruce Wayne changed. TAS Wayne was a meek, brown suit yellow shirt, type of guy, similar to Clark from All Star Superman. Whereas TNBA Wayne is a no nonsense business man, similar to Luthor. Maybe Grayson's absence hurt Wayne, like in the comics, as a result Batman got angrier. Batman stopped appealing to the criminal's humanity, more focused on locking them up instead of rehabiliting them. Joker and Riddler became more cartoonish to oppose Batman's overly stoic nature. Catwoman lost interest and flirted with Nightwing to make Batman jealous. I recall Mr. Freeze exploding on an oil platform, so that would explain his mental and physical change. I think Wayne found a way to cure Nora, I guess Mr. Freeze was sad that he couldn't be with her, much like Hohenheim Elric. Meeting Superman proved to Batman that he isn't alone, that the mask isn't a burden, it's an honor. This philosophy expands between JL and JLU. I don't remember when Batman time travels and meets his old self, that's when. Batman interacting with Static reminds me of TAS. I was born in the 90's, Batman, Superman, Justice League, Static Shock, Batman Beyond I watched it all, back to back. I'm glad the series changed, there's no way Bruce Wayne would remain the same after all these years.
Despite being mixed on some of the design changes I always thought TNBA had some really solid episodes, I had no idea it had such a mixed reputation.
Me either. I loved it for the fact that the characters grew & evolved. I just hated how sparingly Nightwing was used & a few of the character designs.
I really liked it.

The best thing out of TNBA for me is the flashback from Batman Beyond Return of the Joker. Thats the real conclusion of the show and its a masterpiece
That too !
but thats isn't TNBA, that's Batman Beyond which arguably was more in tone with BTAS
Absolute banger
That flashback scene blew my mind the first time I saw it. So epic !
Facts, Justice League still has my favorite portrayals on any screen of Superman and Wonder Woman
I rewatch all those shows from time to time and they literally never get old. Holding up is an understatement.
@@largefactorythe first five minutes of the first episode of the first season has possibly my favourite Batman clip…
@@dinloud.3887 - I’m gonna have to go back and rewatch now 👍
@@largefactory I’m a bat-freak, but watching it again and again still gives me that really good feeling you get when a show captures your imagination perfectly… part of it might even be because I anticipated the JL show so much, but that bat-focused opener was so far beyond and not what I’d been expecting…
The new style was changed to be more in line with Superman TAS, which started in ‘96.
Double Talk is absolute fire, one of my favorite Batman episodes, Batman sleuthing around by himself is always a plus
One of my favorite episodes
"Old wounds" is the best Batman episode ever!
It's the worst due to the characterization of Batman. Over the Edge is way better.
Bear in mind that "Old wounds" is narrated by Nightwing, so Batman characterization makes sense
I respect your perspective, Almost got Em is Gawd tier
@@TreFKennedy Yes ! Almost got em is the best episode honestly
Agreed. After "legends of the dark knight" and "over the edge", old wounds is my favorite TNBA episode.
The new Batman adventures is really great the scarecrow was amazing in it I wish there were more seasons!
Yeah I wish there was more episodes on TNBA as well because it looks way better !
I remember the episode with the little girl and Clayface being one of the saddest episodes I saw at the time…
Don't forget Batman the Animated Series was inspired by Max fleischer's Superman which was also confirmed by the editors at DC Comics who I was blessed to meet back in 1990 at Sotheby's auction in preparation for the upcoming animated series
Another animated show that drastically changes its artstyle is American Dragon Jake Long
As a 10 year old I was just happy to get new episodes and kind of liked the small redesigns.
Batman's new design in TNBA reminds me alot of the frank miller batman design the black and grey color scheme and the muscle,
While the original design had the blue and grey motif which was reminiscent of adam west
Goes to show how bats developed from empathetic and compassionate to alot more stoic and darker
I liked the show. It was helping lead to the massive DCAU, alongside Superman The Animated Series, and Batman Beyond
Keep up the great work. I'm really digging all this Batman lore.
Wasn't he always swinging into people with a double kick anyways? That's gotta hurt more than a punch
they're side-swipes; much less brutal than the ones he pushes on guy gardner
Every time I see the batgirl redesign I think of the boxes of Batman shaped, macaroni and cheese I would eat as a kid, it's pure nostalgia
Came here after Alex Lennen gave you a shout out and I gotta say, your presentation is fantastic. Good stuff man, I hope this channel grows for you.
Great video, I love your nuanced perspective on the show. There’s really a lot to like about TNBA.
I like that Robin design a lot more than any other I've seen
Honestly I never saw this season as so incredibly different than the animated series. The essence is still there. The only nitpicks I had were that Riddler should have still worn a suit (though that perspective might have been influenced by the Arkham games, in my mind) and that joker should have had a bit more color.
Awesome video. As a lifelong Batman fan I deeply appreciate your essays. Thank you 🙏🏾
And thank you for writing!
Season 4 might have the best animation overall, what an amazing run.
this season had some incredible episodes.
This is probably my favorite channel in all of YT. I've been following you since the beginning, thank you for all the hard work and dedication!
Thank you so much for that!
I wouldn’t commit to the art style change indicating a whole new series. American Dragon Jake long also had a pretty drastic art direction change yet continued the story line.
I think that the show was great and that it took BTAS and STAS to the next level.
Completely agree. I have no idea what these fans are talking about. It completely refined the original series, improving on it in almost every possible way.
- The action is better
- The characters have more depth to them
- Less censorship
- Dialogue is better
- Interaction between characters are better
- Better pacing
- And yes for the most part the designs are better and more sleek.
Yep, and I like that Batman became more brooding and dark. It was something he was wrestling with in the original series that actually got the better of him. @@blueblur2273
Facts
The episodes I like from the new batman adventures, mad love, old wounds, over the edge, legends of the dark knight.
Actually the designs were changed to keep animation consistent with Superman TAS when being animated overseas.
@@blueblur2273what you mean animated overseas ?
@robertrogers074 Bruce Timm team could sometimes be overloaded with work. So they hired an outside company over in Japan to help them sometimes. So when they would be swamped with things to do, they would have the team in Japan animate for them.
@@blueblur2273 that too.
Though it should go without saying, Kevin Conroy and the rest of the voice cast gave their A Game. Though i miss your format, i understand the change
One of my biggest pet peeves are the people who INSIST on separating this from BTAS. No, it's all BTAS. Just because art style changed doesn't mean it isn't BTAS.
Yeah fr fr, the shows may look absolutely different from each other but they definitely are the start of the DCAU, people suck lol
@@guileniam I can’t reconcile the Batman from Robin’s Reckoning as the same one from Old Wounds.

this series is truly an underated gem.
Great video explaining how it all works. Personally I like both versions. I don't want to choose which version is better. I just like both
I loved all the versions. They all had their own take. Which is fine. I mean who would have thought that Michael Keaton would've made such an awesome Bruce Wayne/Batman or Jack would make such a great Joker ?
Traditional Cel Animation was used in BTAS - Computer Animation was used on TNBA , Batman Beyond,JL & the DCAU
Thank you!
Mad love was on TNBA. There’s no way it’s bad.
The people who like TNBA are the same people who happily wore masks during lockdowns
😂
Sad that their maybe no future inspired Batman TAS , well even if they did be weird without Conroy
There really shoulda been one more season, of the Batman/Superman Adventures 😢
Dude, I just wanted to let you know, that you are the best comic historian I’ve ever watched. In my opinion, No one does stuff like this as good as you
Thank you so much for that!
That Batman/Superman movie is awesome!
I was interdused into comics watching the Timm verse and grew up watching it instead of comics.I think if you're more of a comic book person instead of just watching TV it might leave you wanting something more, but I loved it all BTAS STAS TNBA Batman beyond. JLU
BTAS was aimed at adults while TNBA was aimed at kids.
8.4 is still a very high rating. You act like people gave it a 4 rating lol.

Idk why I just love this season 🤷🏼♀️
You don’t know why ? Maybe because it’s GOOD specially when we were kids and also it was just more batman and I couldn’t say no to that
So strange, ive been watching a few episodes of batman the animated series before bed lately and now i open youtube and was randomly recommended this video!
I loved the crossovers with Superman though
I loved the new Batman animated series I just wish ot had more episodes yhats all, but everything looked way better though !
Personally for me, I really enjoyed the show. I didn't see much wrong with it, other than the lack of Joker's lips and eyes
you should make a video about beware the batman, I always liked the darker tone of that show but it ended fairly quickly
He goes from fighting mobsters and his rouges gallery with adventures largely contained in Gotham to going on adventures with the Justice League where he fights aliens, gods, magic users, and even a time traveler just to name a few
The DCAU felt like an evolving universe and Batman is the poster boy for this since he was there from the beginning.
Hey leave Prince ALONE😡🤣🤣
@@darthbigred22RIP Prince, he was a massive Batman fan.
What about Joker's Millions and all the changes they made to flesh out and improve that story? That episode wasn't just the same as the comic
Which also leads to Batman Beyond and Justice League/Justice League Unlimited.
I love this comics amazing video 👍🏽
