      @Robert Johnson The Sonics put up a much better fight vs Chicago in the 1996 Finals than OKC did vs Miami in 2012. I'm a Chicago fan and I believe Seattle could've won that series if they had let Payton guard MJ from the start. MJ struggled over the last 3 games of the series after Seattle made that defensive switch and the Bulls didn't score more than 87 points during those last 3 games. They just screwed up waiting until they were down 3-0 to let Payton have that chance. OKC won game 1 of the 2012 Finals and then proceeded to get schooled and smacked around by Miami the rest of that series. I knew that group in OKC wasn't gonna win a championship together after that awful performance on the big stage.

    The 90's Sonics were the reason I love basketball today. The fact that they were the only real team that gave Jordan and the Bulls even the slightest pause and it happened to be during their 72 win season, is a testament to their tough as nails play style. Gary Payton and Shawn Kemp are still 2 of my favorite players of all time as a kid who grew up in the Bay Area when the Warriors were garbage but still wanted a Bay Area hero to root for, I absolutely fell in love with Gary Payton and his stifling defense. It hurts that the team isn't still in Seattle but I might never have been the basketball fan that I am today if it wasn't for the Seattle Supersonics.

      Also the Jazz in 97 and 98 gave the Bulls some concern. The Bulls needed last second heroics from Jordan and Kerr to beat them. The 93 Suns were very tough as well. Yes, the Sonics in 1996 were a powerhouse. One of the best teams to lose in the finals.

      I seen that documentary making Jordan look like he’s a god when was nice but severely over hyped. Jordan received calls that made other players unable to guard him like they did other players; I knew that them and they even showed Magic saying that I’m the documentary with Bird. Also they hyped him up and made it seem he was “struggling at times” dealing with losing his father YEARS ago the reason he was a little “off key” when the glove started guarding him. Were are my real Sonics fans that kept up with the team and knew that DURING the playoffs close to the finals GP sister ATTEMPTED SUICIDE. So do you think maybe he had things in his mind as well? If you get to watch the 6 games played for the 1996 NBA finals, you guys will realize the following:
    1. Shawn Kemp played those games so good enough to become the NBA Finals MVP, but he wasn’t granted... he deserved it though.
    2. Michael Jordan scored the lowest amount of points in a finals series vs the 1996 Sonics scoring less than 30 points per game when he used to score over 35 on the previous series... that’s a fact, you can check it up

    • @carlosenriquetrejo3599
      @carlosenriquetrejo3599 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      3. Gary Payton really stopped MJ on games 4 and 5, not so much on game 6, but consider that it was Hershey Hawkins guarding Air on the first 3 games, which was not the best option as we all could see. With GP on MJ the series would’ve gone to game 7 and anything could’ve happened. 4. Sam Perkins and Det were under their usual contribution to the Sonics game... if they had been sharper, particularly Sam (who played garbage, you can watch the video for the series for yourselves) who could’ve done things better. 5. In short, as a fan of the Sonics but recognizing the greatness of Michael Jordan... we were not that far of getting the title that 96 if only such factors had been observed, corrected and emphasized. Bring our Sonics back!

    Bulls don't win if McMillan wasn't hurt. McMillan was the point guard, team captain and best defensive player. People forget that Payton was not the heart and soul of the team. He always felt more like a secondary player until Kemp left. The team was well balanced with a different leading scorer every night.

    Its laughable when they say the Bulls played no one in the Finals. Both Jazz teams, Sonics, and Suns won between 62-64 games the years they faced the Bulls in the Finals. The Bulls just made great teams look mediocre. The late 90s Jazz were to the Shaq and Kobe Lakers, as the Pistons were to MJ and Scottie's Bulls. The Jazz whooped on the Lakers every year, knocking them out the playoffs, until LA got over the hump, with Phil. Obv we know about the Sonics. That Suns team was well-balanced, as well as that Blazers squad. And the Lakers won 58 games in 1991 and beat said Blazers team.

    Gary Payton blames George Karl because he doesn't want to take any of the blame. Karl said he didn't start Payton on Jordan because he needed Payton's scoring and was concerned about his injured hamstring. And the series could have gone differently if Payton had not **** the bed in games 1 & 2. Payton averaged 20 ppg that season but only managed 13 both games.

    • @lucky889s9
      @lucky889s9 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I just think Payton got the final jitters the first three games. And behind that trash talking persona, he wouldn't admit it. Had they have another go at the bulls the next year, it would have gone differently

    • @davidroberts7282
      @davidroberts7282 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@lucky889s9 But, you see that's the problem for those Sonics teams and it's collection of great players who might get a bit nervous the first time in a sports championship finals: They don't play well or a huge superstar doesn't contribute significantly at certain points which comes back to doom the entire team to losing the series and some of them compensate with their huge, over-inflated egos saying "Well, we're a great team that has a great nucleus of core players, we'll be back". Well, says who? The 90'S NBA landscape, like it is now, were full of great HOF players with good supporting casts just waiting to knock you off your pedestal and get their chances to dethrone MJ's Bulls, which is exactly what Utah did for the next two seasons. After them, you had a still viable contending Rockets team, young up-and-coming Spurs squad that's going to get great very soon and be a pain in the was to even Jackson's Lakers teams for the next decade and a half, Lakers were a few years away from being the next best thing to a successor dynasty to MJ's Bulls, coached by the same guy, no less.
      My point is: You don't know if your ever going to get back to a sports championship finals again, whether it's the NBA Finals, the World Series, Super Bowl, Stanley Cup, you take as much advantage of your opportunity to win a title and approach it, and play like it's the only one your team is ever going to be in. Gary Payton was lucky, he was able to appear in (and lose, but finally win one with Heat) other NBA Finals. George Karl, Shawn Kemp never got that chance, even if they came close respectively in their own individual ways as a player or an NBA HC.
      Dan Marino assumed after the Dolphins got blown out in Super Bowl XIX by 49ers that due to his potent, powerhouse arm and record-setting, stats smashing season they'd be back several times for chances to win a few SBs. That seems silly and premature in retrospect, but from the logic of 1984, Miami had appeared and lost two SB's in the past 3 seasons, I'm sure Don Shula and co. as well as Marino thought that trend would continue. Except starting around by late 80s, Miami's FO never tried to invest too heavily in diversifying their offense or make the defense better. If Dan Marino had had Top 10 overall defenses most of his career, he probably wins a few of those games he loses to Buffalo or San Diego in playoffs throughout the 1990s even if Dolphins have a mediocre, just-above average running games.
