  • On this episode of Bulldozed, Bomani Jones summarizes the 1990s Orlando Magic, whose brief run as contenders featured an NBA Finals appearance in 1995. After years of playoff letdowns, Shaquille O'Neal's free-agency move to the Los Angeles Lakers and Penny Hardaway's injuries ended the Magic's title window.

I'll never forget Jordan getting the ball stolen from him in the last minutes, them losing, and what I vividly remember is Jordan standing on the court as the magic celebrate, just taking it all in, almost with a glint in his eye. Over time Shaq got tired of playing alongside guys like Kobe and D-Wade who beat guys off the dribble. While Penny was a capable scorer he preferred to pass the ball to Shaq in the post when they played together. Had Shaq stayed they would’ve definitely won a few titles together. The Bulls would've still won but the injuries shortened the series. By G3 the Magic were without both Grant and Shaw who was their top reserve. I know the Bulls won G1 convincingly with them but people overlook the fact that was the first time the Magic played G1 in a series away from their building they weren't used to that different kind've environment and got overwhelmed. The rebound margin was enough of anomaly the Magic without Grant the next 3 games didn't get outrebounded anywhere near as badly. Scott also did play the entire series but wasn't much of a factor, he wasn't getting many open looks in transition which is where he was really effective.

@@norpriest521 I go with Penny. Penny is better at creating for himself. Grant Hill evaluated his own game that he needs that point guard to set him up vs running iso to set himself up.
Penny had handles to makes his own plays, shooting to either score off the dribble or score off the pass, and better on the ball defense.
The comparison can be like arguing that 98.7 is better than 97.7, but Penny was really that good. Individually even better than LeBron. His problem with legacy is that he's going to forever be known as not having a long enough career. And when you consider some of the holes in LeBron's game, along with players like Magic and Hakeem and Duncan, it's not such an egregious error to say LeBron is not top 5 all time.

There was nothing Penny Hardaway couldn't do. He became Orlando's best player and more popular than Shaq. Out sold Jordan with his sneakers with the Lil Penny commercial. He would have been Top 10 all time easy. Shaq was jealous and left to get his own team with a little help from Stern who wanted a marquee player for LA. I think they would've have had a real shot at defeating the Bulls in 1997, 98 if they kept the Orlando Magic team together. Took Jordan and the Bulls a couple years to defeat the Pistons too with the same team. Experience and mental toughness plays a huge role in the play-offs and finals.
