    Yorinobu Arasaka's murder of his father Saburo was a major turning point in the story of Cyberpunk 2077. It led to Jackie and V getting caught during The Heist and set up the events of the rest of the game. What, at first, seems like a rash action taken by a resentful son actually has deeper roots than we originally realize. In this video, we'll explore the real reason that Yorinobu killed Saburo.

    Took me a couple play through to realize that Yorinobu wasn't evil. He was acting in defense against his father taking his body eventually. He got no support against it from his mother and sister or anyone else at Arasaka. Sounds like he developed a hatred for everything Arasaka which rivaled Johnny Silverhand so he tried to make the most of his connections to try to destroy Arasaka from the inside learning from Johnnys failures. Once I played the corpo ending and saw what happened it all made perfect sense why he was the way he was. Saburo basically wanted to become a Cyberpunk version of Orochimaru and keep jumping from body to body of his children and grandchildren. Saburo wants immortality at others expense which is already evil but the fact it is at the expense of family makes it next level evil. What is really messed up is that Saburo had children and raised them from infancy and was still willing to go through with it. Honestly I kind of wish there were an option to assist Yorinobu dismantle Arasaka from the inside and destroy Mikoshi with his assistance with the promise that he would assist with removing Johnny like you get with Hanako.

      @deadcard13 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      This is why I prefer not playing the Devil ending. If you don't help Arasaka, then Yorinobu maintains his advantage over the company and deals a crippling blow. Take Arasaka's deal, though, and the only repercussion is the public opinion when Saburo returns in Yorinobu's body. But the opinion of the masses means little to someone who figured out immortality.

    • @SuperLeshina
      @SuperLeshina ปีที่แล้ว +22

      It actually makes a lot of sense. And him having Johnny's engram, makes it logical. It serves two purposes at once:it is stealing Arasaka's flagship project and cripping the Corp in that way, and it also is learning from Johnny's engram (I think he could play back his memories without inserting the chip in your head) as Johnny's the only person in the game, at, least, that got the closest to destroying Arasaka.

      quite strange Saburo plans to use children (their quantity is finite) or (?) grandchildren (genetic similarity is lesser). Don't they have some kind of genetic modification technologies or clones? besides that, creating an engram is creatin a copy so original you still can't escape the mortal body and dies

    • @maiqtheliar789
      @maiqtheliar789 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@sdust_88 Supply of children isn't an issue if he had chose to collect sperm cells and implant them into donors to make as many children as he felt he needed. Why he didn't I'll never understand. If you are going to be evil at least be smart about it. Saburo doesn't seem like he would care if the original him eventually dies of old age as long as a copy of him is still around to control Arasaka. From the perspective of the Saburo that jumps bodies there would be no difference whether or not the original died or not.

    I don't think Yorinobu returned to the family because he failed in the criminal world. He obviously had help dealing a blow to Arasaka during the Devil ending, that could have been all the underworld contacts/allies he established in his gangster days. He may have returned to the family so he had the foothold he needed for his rebellion.

    • @happyninja42
      @happyninja42 ปีที่แล้ว +42

      Also just what exactly did Yorinobu DO that we can say was "bad"? He's mostly off camera for the entire game, but from the lines he says during the BD scroll, to his conversation with his father before killing him, he SOUNDS an awful lot like Johnny to be honest. He's disgusted by the entire concept of the Soulkiller project (just like Johnny), he finds his father's company to be abhorant and left it for years to run with the Nomads (just like Johnny). Hell he even breaks Johnny's engram out of Mikoshi on the chip, possibly as a form of poetic justice to a kindred spirit, one he knew would appreciate his goals. There is some debating of this, as there are only 2 sources in-game, specifically talking about Johnny's engram being on the chip, and why, and they are worded in a way to be contradictory. If you read an email in Yorinobu's suite during the heist, he is talking to Netwatch about the chip, and NETWATCH says they just want the chip, and any engram would do fine for their purposes (unstated). They specifically ask him why he picked Johnny of all engrams, to which Yorinobu waxes poetic for a bit, and basically says "There is a reason, but it's tl;dr, maybe I'll explain it to you later." However if you read the Netwatch Agent's laptop in the GIM, you can find a conversation between them and Evelyn, about securing the chip, where it's CLEARLY indicated that they specifically asked for Johnny's engram, and Evelyn says "it's because you want to talk to Alt obviously." She uses her knowledge of their plans as leverage to try and get a better deal in their bargain. So one of these sources is incorrect, I don't know which, the game is unclear. One states it was Yorinobu intentionally putting Johnny on there, and Netwatch being "Wtf? Why a coked out rockerboy?" and another has them specifically asking for that same coked out rockerboy. 🤷‍♂
      So let's assume that the correct one is where Yorinobu intentionally put Johnny on the engram, a spirit that had defied his father openly, helped storm the tower and try and strike a blow to his father, and was VERY motivated to stop the same project that had the sword hanging over Yorinobu's head.
      And a spirit that he emulated later, when he said he would make himself the bomb. And in the Devil's ending, what do we see him doing? Taking down ALL of Arasaka, globally. I think in reality, he was VERY much the kind of person that would have allied with Johnny if given the chance. In fact that might've been why he was smuggling him out on a chip that would let Johnny rewrite any host in the first place. To get his help and insight on taking down Soburo. 🤷‍♂
      I honestly now, having played the game multiple times, and really thought about this, think that Yorinobu wasn't actually a "bad" guy, or even a psychopath, like Big Dan suggests. All of his hostile actions are directed at agents of Arasaka (his sister, Takemaru when he learns he is part of the old guard, V since he's working against his goals of destroying Arasaka). But outside of that, I can't really call any examples of him doing "bad" things? He's completely polite and caring to Evelyn when they hook up in the BD, he says he tried to free everyone from Arasaka's grip when he's on the floor in the Devil ending, talking to V. He's really not that bad, compared to the average person that V interacts with going to the nearby grocery store.

      @@happyninja42 there is a hidden gem, NetWatch agents, dead above a long section of road in Pacifica. One of them, if you scan him, has the same name as the one we deal with in the GIM. Think he has a convo shard and you can use your scan to zoom in on the identification on the floor.
      Now, not sure if its a bit of a 'men in black' style thing, in that all the men have the same name, but why would two NetWatch dudes be in the same area, same time, same name? (If its not, I mean)
      Which one is the real one, eh?
      We know the Voodoo Boys want to talk to Alt. I get the feeling they are thinking of the AIs as the 'New Loa' for the digital age. They don't seem to know that Evelyn knows Johnny is on the shard (tho Brigitte knows Evelyn is too smart for her own good) and don't know that NetWatch know ether.
      So, what if the guy in the GIM is not actually *with* NetWatch?
      We already have a hidden gem of a dead cop under a garage in Kabuki who may not even *be* a real cop lol. What's to say Mr Cowboy in the cinema isn't part of some secret connected to what's going down in Phantom Liberty?
      Maybe there was yet another faction that wanted Johnny? And he was part of that faction, masquerading as a NetWatch agent, among the rest of them?
      In the tabletop, its hinted that a full Borg firefighter named 'Samantha' who is a big fan of Samurai, found both the Arasaka ADD nuke (yes, they had one. Yes, it was in the Towers basement areas, and yes, it never went off) and the half of Johnny's body in the rubble when she was working that day, trying to save folks.
      That she hid the nuke material in the bay, where it was later buried under tons of concrete when the city was rebuilt. Took Johnny's body and froze it in the Body Bank (well known cryo facility in the tabletop, Johnny stored Alts body there till he got back 2 years later in 2015 after hiding out with Santiago and the Aldecaldos) then later, used the nuke casing to hide that she was smuggling him out to someone called 'Angel' in Los Alamos, who worked in nuke disposal.
      In fact, it hints that 'Angel' might even be Alt herself (yeah, its possible she is just a fanatical fan like the guy we klep Kerry's guitar back from lol) since she says "Hello, my love" to him.
      Just wish I knew what was going down. Too many conflicting possible timelines in my head, arguing with Maximum Mike saying 'its all one timeline' since they all keep contradicting themselves lol.

    If you read the lore, this reason becomes more insidious. Saburo was a Japanese ultranationalist whose ideas were developed during the final decades of Imperial Japan. His impetus for Arasaska was to make Japan the dominant superpower in economics & international politics, to recover the glory lost from WW2 and have vengeance on the USA. Given his controlling nature that also meant having near full control of Japanese politics. Yorinobu has always been against that since he found that he could never escape Saburo's will or plans so he figured the only way to destroy Arasaska was from within through decisions that weakened its hold on the world. This may seem like a ridiculous plot to some but keep in mind Cyberpunk was made in the late 80s when fears about Japan overtaking America economically was waning. I find Arasaska name to not be a Coincidence since it's similar to Arisaka which is the name of the inventor and the namesake of the service rifles produced for the Japanese military in the early-mid 20th century. Kind of a forewarning of Arasaska intentions.

    I think that despite V's perspective in regards to Yorinobu internally and externally, Yorinobu may have been the real "hero" despite his actions. It's hinted that he was planning to end Arasaka corp for good, and free the world from it's hold. Basically even without V raiding the tower (in the non Devil endings), Arasaka would have been doomed to fail intentionally by Yorinobu, himself.

Seeing as how it was Saburos plan to always steal Yorinobus body whether he was on board or not I'd day Yorinobu did the right thing trying to kill him, unfortunately he didn't know Saburo had an engram made already therefore being immortal with an empire of lackeys

    Johnny tried to destroy Arasaka, and free Alt by bombing the building. But Yorinobu knows blowing up a building does nothing. But blowing up Saburo? That could do it.

One wonders why he didn't immediately destroy Mikoshi once he had control of the company; maybe it was too well protected even for the leader of the company. It's interesting to think Yorinobu should have actively been helping V the whole time and his sister became the main villain essentially trying to murder her brother to save her father.

Yorinobu correctly realized that Saburo would do anything to reclaim the Relic, including travel outside Japan.

    Great video! I've always had a soft spot for Yorinobu since playing the game for the first time, I do feel like he's the least evil of the Arasaka bunch and actually has somewhat good intentions.
    Also, IIRC, Yorinobu was born in the 1990s according to TTRPG lore, and I don't think that he was conceived just as a vessel for Saburo. However, when the preferred Arasaka heir (Kei Arasaka) was killed in 2023, Saburo found himself with Yorinobu, who would never follow in his father's footsteps, and Hanako, who had grown up sheltered and definitely was never intended to be a leader, so he could've possibly envisioned his plan right then and there. Yorinobu came back to Arasaka after realizing that he could only truly harm the company from the inside, and his plan eventually comes to fruition in the other endings (also thanks to V's help assaulting Arasaka tower and destroying Mikoshi).

    I wouldnt be surprised if Yorinobu wanted Arasaka to end, to dismantle it. Return power to the people. He did expose himself to the "open life" of a streetgang and may have witnessed the damage done by major corporations. This would also fit with the great purge of Arasaka, weakening and opening it.
    Yorinobu may have been an unwilling pawn turned anti-hero that revolted against the system (created by his father, and others). But of course, I'm no expert on this matter.

    Interestingly enough, Yorinobu wins in 3 out of 4 endings, he survives and his father stays dead by erasing the engram of Saburo Arasaka. He went to war against the company because he wanted to stop them from comitting war-crimes. After all, he seems to be a man with convictions and a conscience. The only time Yorinobu loses, is through the Devil Ending, were Saburo's psyche occupies (illegally) the body of Yorinobu.

  • @MasterFief
    @MasterFief ปีที่แล้ว +13

    I feel like this is possible but it’s much more likely that Yorinobu is actually the true hero of the story, he left Arasaka because he found out his father was an evil overlord who wanted to control everything and rule the world, he founded the Steel Tigers and they literally fought against Arasaka on several occasions but after the death of his brother he realized that fighting Arasaka from the outside could never win especially with the Engram of Saburo being around even if he was killed he could always come back and so Yorinobu decided to rejoin the family to destroy it from the inside out, even though he loved his sister Hanako he realized that she was just another Saburo in the making and therefore in order to truly destroy the Arasaka Corporation as well as its hold on the world the entire family including himself would have to die. He sets this up as well as a war with Militech so that after all the Arasaka’s are dead Militech can finally land the killing blow on the Arasaka Corporation once and for all this freeing people from their Fear of the Arasaka Corporation. Yorinobu is the hero of the story however since Cyberpunk is supposed to be a Grimdark dystopia they perfectly set him up as one of the villains (or the main villain in the case of the Devils ending) to the Merc V who doesn’t necessarily care about right or wrong he’s just trying to make his own way in the dystopian world of Cyberpunk.

      So you’re not wrong about his eventual motivations, but I think this theory is the nail on the head as to what originally started Yorinobu’s “rebellious phase” years ago. Kids don’t typically hate their parents. But when Yorinobu learned of his father’s fucked up plans for him, it started to cast doubt on the rest of his legacy as well.

    As far as I’m concerned, yorinobu was the most based member of the family. I think it’s good that he killed Saburo and I can understand revolting when we’re talking about him only existing to be a vessel for his father. It’s ultimately why I think the devil ending is the worst one. It leaves the corpo’s better off now that they know how to make their ruthless leader immortal, now your lifespan can be commodified at the cost of others.

    One of the things that puzzle me (and this might be explained in the lore somewhere) is that IIRC cloning was a viable process by this time. The wealthy use it to make cloned organs for replacement and the like. If this was the case, then why wouldn't Saburo simply have a clone of himself grown and put on ice until the transfer tech was perfected?
    I have no doubt that Saburo originally wanted Yorinobu to succeed him and the lore supports that. But after his son broke from the family, Saburo may have decided that his son's 'place' was as his vessel into immortality.

    It's an interesting idea, but I don't think so. In the BD of his apartment, Yorinobu does talk about his father's sick schemes, certainly. But, if Y had any inkling of the part HE was to (supposedly) play in them, I feel that his reaction and general behavior would have been much much stronger.
    His final attack on Saburo seems to me more like simply years of suppressed anger finally boiling over. On more than one level, I actually feel sorry for the guy, because his father was a frickin' nightmare who should have been offed decades ago.
    On the periphery of this are questions that the game never seems to answer - that deal between Netwatch and Yorinobu. What was Netwatch's intentions? That it was Alt-related seems reasonable, but is unproven. We do not know for sure. What was Yorinobu going to get in return? No idea.

    Maybe someone else has asked this, but could V be Johnny Silverhand's grandchild or great grandchild? If the relic works better in a host with DNA that is compatible as in Saburo and Yorinobu, then V might very well be the offspring of one of Silverhand's one-night stands. Question: According to Saburo's diary in the AV on the roof of the hotel, he came to Night City via the Saka aircraft carrier. If the relic was so important, why not better security on it in the first place and why take several days to cross the Pacific when Saka agent could have locked Yorinobu down somewhere and wait for Saburo, something like they did to Silverhand after the nuclear demolition charge(s) were detonated. There must have been a great deal of cut story content, for whatever reason, because a lot just does not make sense, to me at least, as the story line stands in the released game.

    • @silverbane8065
      @silverbane8065 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Its gone around from the first week the game was out. Many folks have pointed out Johnny's character info said 'a string of trashed relationships in his wake' thinking one of them could be V's grandma.
      Thing is tho. Saburo isn't just using Yorinobu because he is his genetic match.
      He uses him because, as his only living son and heir, he will automatically inherit his holdings and businesses, both in the west, and in the east. Hanako Arasaka would need a special dispensation I think, to run them, and should she have a son herself, said son would inherit the moment he was 'of age' (should anything happen to Yorinobu that would see him removed)
      Its a bit like the old ferengi proverb "brother's inherit, wives serve"
      Daughters are only for carrying on the bloodline's rather than being considered the bloodline.
      Also, how better to destroy the west, and (in his eyes) the corrupt western Corpo rivals, than to force them to destroy their own family, in a bid for immortality? How many CEO's would fall on their children, grandchildren even *just* to survive? How many of the rich and powerful had already thrown in their lot with his secondary plot of more than just keeping a copy of your loved one alive?
      If you saved Takemura during the kidnapping of Hanako, he replaces Hellman to speak to V, and his explanation as to why V cannot just get a new body is different. He says V is 'unique' and this is the reason why they can only offer storage for now.
      Hellman is being purposefully lead down the path of family body connection by Saburo (I think) because imagine if it got out that just *anyone* could use a Relic like his, to possess anyone they wanted?
      Saburo is using Hellman to give credence to his assertion that only by sacrificing your children, can you live forever.
      Thus, making living forever by Relic Transfer something only the rich, powerful and unscrupulous will consider.
      Its the collar he will use to enslave the world, and remake it, should the Devil ending prove to be the one that's considered 'cannon'
      (part of me hopes this is not the one, because while it gives player of the tabletop something huge to fight against, its so fekkin depressing, if you aren't someone that sides with the Corpo's point of view)

    • @GSainto
      @GSainto ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I don't think that's likely. The relic was literally changing V's DNA to be more like Johnny. If V was related to Johnny, it wouldn't have changed so much that V's engram would be seen as an intruder. Maybe there's a "consent" type takeover that's easier than stealing someone's body forcefully. I'd be willing to bet that Yorinobu just gave up and let himself be taken, almost like how V can take medicine to willingly give Johnny control.

    Sadly there's alot of incoherences regarding this topic.
    First, the game mentions the relic need a similar host because of DNA, otherwise it would be rejected. But Johnny's engram is overriding V's DNA, making V's body *his* body by the end of the game (which allow the player to either give back the body to V and die or Johnny and live).
    Secondly, you learn that Lizzie Wizzy has succesfully transferred her consciousness from her human body to a full chrome body, so why Saburo can't ? Yes, this has warped some of her personality traits in the process, but she wasn't Saburo Arasaka with all the money and power of the Arasaka corp.
    Also, doesn't that mean Lizzie Wizzy is immortal ? or does she still have to use a organic brain ? If the latter, Saburo could still grow one from his own cells, as Nightcorp is growing human meat for consumption.

      I've come to the conclusion that the memory here is *his* alteration, unlike with the tower.
      Because there is no mention of them splitting up in the tabletop story.
      It just starts with them leaving the Hammer via a back door, and the attack.
      I think Johnny went over and over the events, and changed them this way in his head, because he can feel less loss for loosing Alt that way. (if he's breaking up with her, I mean)
      But I also have to wonder if changing other memories can affect earlier ones.
      Like I said, he didn't start hating the Corps that bad till after the 2013 event. Before that, they were just another bunch of asshats to him.
      His first thought on waking was "I'm alive?" then "where is Alt?"
      Once he knew what had happened, he wasn't all "Arasaka did this to get to *ME* " he recognised they ware 'hiring' Alt (standard practice back then, when Arasaka was still just a small security firm lol)
      I get this feeling that some of his memories have been messed with much more by them altering his others.

    I don't know if anybody has mentioned this but I have a real problem with hanako when she starts talking about how she knew and accepted her place and her brother didn't
    Because after you learn everything her whole thing about knowing your place in the world just smells of BS because it's really easy to accept your place in the world when you're not the one who's going to have their skull emptied out and their body stolen I just find her really hypocritical at this moment because you get the feeling that she's only on this whole except your place kick because she's not the one who got chosen to be her dad's new body

    Does that mean that V was related to him some how? Or because of the bullet, she bypassed the requirement for the chip?

    • @Karajorma
      @Karajorma ปีที่แล้ว +7

      V was dead. I'm guessing that allowed the engram to get enough of a foothold before it brought V back that it was just a matter of time for it to win. Try that with a living mind and it can fight back immediately. That's why the chip doesn't do anything when it's in Jackie. And the chip is (foolishly) removed before Jackie dies. Yeah, we were a few seconds from having a Cyberpunk story where Jackie is the one seeing Silverhand. And is with us for the entire game.

      @@Karajorma doubt that would have happened unfortunately. Jackie was dying due to blood loss, something the chip could not save him from. Where as V was hit in the head, with a small caliber bullet out of a (possibly) badly maintained gun, aimed at just possibly the exact angle required *not* to 100% destroy their brain.
      Its the one thing many if us wish we (as V) could change, especially since V can tank multiple hits and just suck on a dozen bounce-backs and heal, but Jackie only seems to have one, and while he visibly seems to survive his shock saves, poor guy fails his save vrs death in the last minute.
      Guess its cause V is the player.
      I've had that issue before. My goblin priest in Warcraft, having to wait around for another goblin priest to parachute in to 'exorcise' a tank (lol) why can't I just do it? The power of greed dispels you! *smacks tank with rolled up goblin money.
      Or when someone famous dies in a cut scene and I'm a healer, or I have a dozen healing potions in my inventory.
      I was a necromancer-priest in guild wars, I had 'resurrection' on my skill bar, but I could not cast it on prince Rurik?!
      *sigh..... Plot armour and all that, I guess.

      @@silverbane8065 On the other hand, the main reason someone is dead dead is because starved of oxygen the brain is permanently damaged. If Jackie didn't have to worry about that they could have fixed his body up pretty easily. This is cyberpunk after all.
      Now how they'd know that he could come back is another matter,

      @@Karajorma usually the players would have a little knowledge of first aid, enough to stabilise a character who was failing their shock save, so they could be kept from bleeding out or wait to recover.
      We also used to have Techies who specialised in MedTechie, but I think that's been merged into one now?
      It's a bit like the old AD&D rules for negative HP.
      Players would drop to 0hp and instead of dying, would have to save versus death or similar, so they wouldn't keep taking damage. Get to -10 or -20hp and you needed a resurrection scroll/spell or reroll a new player character lol.
      We had similar rules in 1st, 2nd and Cybergeneration, tho players with enough knowledge or a medkit could take a turn to use it to stabilise a badly wounded friend.
      Tho, having a 'TraumaTeam' or 'REO Meatwagon' membership could help after that.
      Unfortunately, that doesn't work as well in digital games like this.
      Still, later this year (we hope) they are releasing the 'Edgerunners Update' supliment pack, which should update Cyberpunk RED from the year 2045 to 2076 and so, if players want to save Jackie, they can do it in there maybe ^^ by just giving him some first aid.
