      The average car here in Sweden drives 300 km/week, meaning that half of all cars drive less -- I'm in the 100 km/week at most range, with home deliveries for groceries and most other stuff and a 5 km trip to the nearby bus terminal that takes me to most places I need to go.

    I can't tell you how great I think this is and how we Americans should be very thankful to the Chinese companies for introducing these lower priced highly efficient EVs. Instead of them being a "threat" I would reframe it as a tremendous opportunity. My concern is the high tariff currently in place on Chinese automotive products will stymie access to the "Seagull" (what a cool car!) for possibly a few years. Also, the American auto companies will try to sell their own EV models to Americans most likely in the 35k to 40k range as compared to the low 20K in China. I say discontinue the tariff, open the market and let the market set the price. Plus, the safety issue simply has not been established yet. Open market: THAT is the American way.

    • @nickvdk11
      @nickvdk11 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I'm all for an affordable EV for the masses, but Chinese companies subsidise and dump goods like Solar panels, cheap TIMU goods and EVs in the US market. Also China artificially devalues the RMB so not exactly a "fair market". US tariffs are retaliatory.

    • @manlouie8783
      @manlouie8783 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      @@nickvdk11The US has been subsidizing the US EV markets for over a decade. China subsidies their EV companies (and other industries) upfront if true. In the meanwhile the US government subsidized the EV market thru the backend with tax credits (upto $7500 per vehicle based on the vehicle and certain income level). Maybe the Chinese system work better in producing more competitive EV companies (more than the number of your fingers). In the US only Tesla is truly successful due to Elon Musk. Based on April 2024 CNBC article, more 30 EV startup companies failed in the last decade. The success of the Chinese EV companies globally still remained to be seen. Tariff is not retaliatory but a sign of unable to compete regardless if the playing level is level or not.

      The BEST thing about the button pad in front, especially compared to the Dolphin with the same thing, is that you aren't as tempted to put your hands up there to reach for a phone and push one of these buttons by mistake. Actually, I would be more than satisfied just with a motor and 300km range for a $10K car. I can lose the A/C and GPS for not having to go to the gas station or servicing (oil, filters, transmission, belts, gaskets, radiator, brakes, starter .....). Looks like fun. Hopefully it will join its BYD stablemates here in Israel as well.
    These are the vehicles that will make a big difference.
    People may be scared to invest big bucks in larger EV's that may be using yesterday's powertrain in a couple of years, but the risk would be smaller in a smaller EV.
    It'd make a great "first EV" for some EV sceptics.
    Also, the secret sauce for a city car is being zippy. Immediate midrange acceleration, especially between, say, 30 - 70 KP/h to zip through traffic and into parking spaces.
    It's also the expected behaviour of small city cars in the West. That's why people buy them.
    People like good handling, as we can see with the success of the MG4/Mulan.
    This is where most Chinese cars fall behind their Western counterparts.
    People expect a firm, sporty ride in smaller city cars at the expense of softness since these aren't cars you will do very long drives in anyway.
    May as well enjoy yourself. 🤷🏼‍♂️
    Interesting car.

    I really want this car. Especially that proposed Seagull GTI version. I would take a trip to a different country just to drive one.
    I wish the US would carve out an exemption for these types of cars, as we have no options like it here. A sub-3000 lb EV with active safety features is not a threat to other cars on the road. LFP blade batteries are less likely to start a fire than the batteries we have available in the US. And it likely has the least threat to the environment, both in production and operation. Especially with the more environmentally-friendly LFP (eliminates problematic Nickel and Cobalt, and replaces it with the cheap essential nutrients iron and phosphorus) or Na Ion (replaces the Lithium with Sodium) battery chemistry.

    I would like the BYD Seagull to come to the UK, but right now it’s unclear if this model will come to the UK. However, if I look at what Australian motoring media has reported, they’ve gone to say that the Seagull is unlikely to be sold in Australia, suggesting that RHD models aren’t a huge priority.

      Australia's import agent has said at this time they aren't looking to import the seagull.
      In the UK it is BYD itself (through BYD Europe) who directly imports the cars. The dealers desperately want the seagull in the showrooms as fast as possible. My local one says sales of the Atto3 have been "underwhelming". Well looking at SMMT BYD have only sold 180 cars in the 4.5 months it's been on sale, that is pretty underwhelming.
      From BYDs perspective there is no rush to get the seagull to the UK market. There currently are no other EVs in the sub £20k market. With the news that the replacement for the MG3 isn't a BEV and the smaller brother to the MG4 not coming any time soon BYD don't need to rush sadly.

    Pretty much the most exciting EV since the advent of EVs. I don't need a car that can go 0-60 in 0.04s and a truck bed I'll use once a decade. The roads around me are all limited to 100 km/h at most and I'll rarely exceed those limits by more than 20km/h. I'm a diehard ebike convert, but this could sway me back into car ownership. These are the cars manufacturers need to make if they want to stay relevant, not humonguous fortresses on wheels with more computing power than a small country.
