  • Trying a superlight tent, sleeping mat & bag - but the mat broke as soon as I lay on it. I really like the bag though! Hoping to try it on a multi-night trip soon if the weather warms up a bit 🙏

    If you go to a car accessory shop and buy a small aerosol can of "Plus Gas" and squirt it in the joints of your trecking poles this will release them. It is specially for seized joints and rusty nuts etc. It is different from WD40 which is a water displacement product..hence its name ! The fajitas made me salivate... a few jalapeños to top off would have been a bonus ! Another fab vid.

    Always keep all your gear inside your shelter. Boots especially! In my case as a service person it's a necessity but in your case it will prevent you putting on wet or damp boots in the morning. I'd put my boots in a bag and inside my sleeping bag so I didn't have to put cold footwear on in the morning. That is bad for morale when you get up and have to put cold boots on.

    Camping light freeze at night.
    You should comsider taking a liner silk/fleece, in case it does get cold to give you that extra protection and increase the warmth range of the sleeping bag.
    Think of it like layers.

    • @arthurrsaker8893
      @arthurrsaker8893 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There's no doubt a liner helps when used like that, but it helps even more if the sleeping bag is inside the liner, the reasons being that it provides an extra barrier between the lofted insulation of the sleeping bag and the cold night air, which is trying to un-loft it especially if it's only a budget stitch through system bag which loses too much warmth through all those seams, and not a box walled quilted one. If you can obtain a larger size liner it works best as it won't compress the insulation. If it's too snug it won't loft so well . Liners can be a nightmare for restless sleepers when they get a bit tangled so eliminating that uncomfortable nuisance is a bonus too. It's counter intuitive to use it this way and of course its no longer a liner, but it is a useful way of getting the most warmth you can from any lightweight sleeping bag, especially if it's only a stitch through job. A bivvy bag can usefully obtain the same outcome. So that's another reason to carry one, To sum up its more comfortable and a good bit warmer, and I,ll trade the, hygiene benefit,for a warm n comfortable night's sleep any time. Good sleep is the foundation of a good trail day.

    Hello and my thanks for your bright tip´s and outlook on camping.
    I´m old now, yet it´s only when your old that you find idea´s of drifting so appealing.
    At least I thought of all those times when I have driven further than I expected or maybe it comes
    down to those thoughts of solitude that are appealing? It´s taken a few years to calm down enough to even
    entertain the idea not feeling guilt from my now selfish lifestyle.
    I now live in Sweden, so am more Swedish. Yet have had only stress in my life so far.
    Your thoughts of letting go and being able to moderate a practical packing, were inspiring.
    I´m interested in both the idea of scooting off with just enough to make it all seem easier.
    So I will follow your steps for a while and see if you are a kindred spirit after all.
    Thank you for both your wisdom and cooking tips. So much seasoning, no wonder weight was an issue! Ha ha
    Keep warm

    Claire, I've also had troubles with those poles that twist to extend or collapse. I've since gone to lighter weight carbon fiber poles (I use Black Diamond brand) . They come in different sizes and you select what fits your height and hiking gait. They collapse down like tent poles folding over each other, and have a carrying bag, which you can leave behind if you want to minimize weight even more. When you unfold them, an extension comes out of the handle and locks into place to hold them extended. You push a button to collapse them again. I've had my pair for 10 years with no problems.

    I guess taking a thick fleece with you would extend the temperature range of the sleeping bag and wear it in the evening outside if it gets unexpectedly cool. Its not always possible to perfectly predict weather and there is always a chance of a sudden cold front passing over at altitude.

    Hi Claire, a simple trick if you forget your support or pole and cannot find a stick, is tie a ridgeline above and tie the apex guy to the ridgeline direct then tie a second line to the guy to tension it by pulling to the tree nearest the entrance,
    or use a light karabiner on the main ridge line, tie the apex guy to the karabiner, set the tension by tying another line to the karabiner and pulling towards the tree nearest to the entrance and tying it off.
    There are other methods but i do not want to bore you or others. Love your videos and work. Take special care, safe trails, tight lines.

      Summer has been very strange in Europe. Heatwaves in the south, very low 20s max in the north. The forecast for Saturday here in London is a maximum temperature of 17C. In August!

    Thanks for the video demonstration and pleasant commentary. Your effort to prove the human condition of survival is not easily swayed by the nature’s harsh weather is admirable. After all, there is no such thing as bad weather just poor planning and poor gear. Seemingly, super light backpackers want the super light gear without the worry of gear destruction. That is laughable. Nature shows no mercy to the unprepared. Nature’s tooth and claw will find a weakness in gear and exploit it. While hiking, my pack has a happy supply of gear. Certain survival items like tents, packs and sleeping bags must be high quality. Often, high quality equals more weight. For me, to live another day in safety and comfort, I will carry the extra weight for peace of mind. Be well. Wishing you peace, safe passage and good fortune ahead. Happy Trails!

    Hi Claire,
    You once agreed with me on the saying “trek light sleep cold”, very important to test/debug your gear locally before you depend on it in the hills. Very important lesson for your viewers.

    I used the uberlite for over a year I also use a light af mat so not had any punctures but on my last trip 1 of the panels popped like yours did I think the little extra weight of the xlight is worth it just for the extra robustness.the sleeping bag looks great and very small pack size. I use a quilt so that packs very small and good down to -1

    • @WildBeare
      @WildBeare  ปีที่แล้ว

      Mm looking at the reviews it seems to be a common problem. A bit surprised that it happened as soon as I lay on it but glad that I wasn't out on a mountain trip, wouldn't trust it out there. Totally agree about the Xlite.. just 120g heavier and not failed me yet.
      Ooh fab, I really want to try a quilt! Love the look of the enlightenment equipment ones :)

    Nice video. Maybe you can explain the fascination with the Lanshan tents. A lot of people seem to use them, but the problem with rain is often pointed out. It beats me why you would want a tent that has problem with rain. When it comes to the sleeping bag, I have several of the Sea 2 Summit bags. I'm also a very cold sleeper and they make a good job of keeping me warm. Last year I did however try to sleep with just a down puffy blanket and found that to be even more comfortable. To my surprise it did a better job of keeping med warm than the Sea 2 Summit bags. The blanket I have is a Easthills Outdoors 1 Person Down Puffy Blanket 137x203cm, 650 fill power, 500g. It will keep me warm down to around 5C when paired with a mat with a good R value. I'm guessing it's because I move around a lot in my sleep as well. 🙂 Something for you to try?
    Keep up the good work with the vids!

    No that's just the built-in pillow unfolding! I've heard many bad things about this mat. I almost exclusively use Exped mats and my Synmat Hyperlite weighs 350 grams and has been my go-to for summer adventures now for some time. Had to fix two pinhole leaks the other day that I think I caused, but that's it so far. I used to own a Neoair Xlite but I really couldn't get on with the open sides of it. I much prefer the raised edges that keep you centered on the Exped mats. I also own a Sea To Summit Spark sleeping bag. Specifically the SP1 and SP0, now called the "Liner". The SP1 has been very good to me altho it is only for the ultralightest of ultralight trips in warm weather. Super lightweight and comfy, they make quality gear.
