  • The long wet winter of 2024 continues, so what better time to try out my £21 tent in the mountains. I'd put this one off for ages because I thought it would be pretty grim (I was right)

In 2020 i decided to see how cheaply i could camp. I bought a pop up tent for around £20 and took it out for a night once the initial covid restrictions had lifted. It was a similar experience to this. I then decided to try to build around the tent, so i bought a huge tarp(5m x 8m), some camo netting and some poles. and set off again. That one was much better. I had the tent set up, with the tarp set over a framework of poles, in essence creating a larger tent around the tent, which i used as a vestibule area where i stored my gear, cooked and ate. I then used the camo netting as a door over the opening in vestibule to enclose it all. I finished it off with a set of solar fairy lights which i draped over the framework of poles.
I have to say, it was a fantastic set up and took me back to my childhood, building gang huts and camping out in the back garden. I stayed out for 5 nights in that. If i remember right, the tarp was about £30 and the camo netting was £20, the poles were around £30, so it wasn't bad value for roughly £100.

There is nothing worse than it being wet inside your tent. Especially in any season but summer. That's why waterproof is the most important quality in my book.

    • @tubybubi
      @tubybubi 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

The tent is waterproof. The moisture comes from your body. Problem on most small tents is ventilation.

The note you ended on, this is the gospel. So many people go out into the elements and have a bad experience with rain and water in the tent. And that clouds the way they think about camping from then on. All tents have condensation issues. But... what I want is a shelter I can trust and that I know will not let in the rain. The Hilleberg Akto is a pretty old design by now, and apparently the Enan is better- lighter, just as good. But what I know when I pitch my Akto is- I'm gonna be dry, and it's going to stand up against the wind. That's all I want at the end of the day. I'm willing to slog 10 miles through wind and rain, so along as when I get where I'm going, I can pitch a shelter and get in out of the elements. The Akto is yesterday's design, but still solves today's problems. It has a generous vestibule for a solo tent. So, you can pitch in the driving rain, get into the vestibule (it will be cramped), and get your sleep system in place, undress and get into the inner tent without getting it wet.
If you're unsure what to buy, but you come across an Akto on Ebay for a really good price, snap it up. Back in the day, it was considered ultra-light. Not so these days. But it's still fairly light, and it will stand up to the elements. If it's still raining when you wake up and you have to break camp in the rain, remove the inner tent first and store it separate. Then break the outer and store it somewhere in your ruck that it doesn't matter if it's wet. You can pitch it wet again, install the inner from the vestibule (cramped but it works), and eventually when you get good weather, you can dry everything out.

    • @davidsykes5635
      @davidsykes5635 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

The Akto is also very easy to pitch.

Did Frank lose weight? 😂 Well, if you weren't near a water source, you could harvest all the condensation you could ever need! Oh Claire, you gave me a camping flashback. Went camping with my daughter and her boyfriend. Their tent broke on setup, so I gave them mine, and we went to town to find me a cheap tent. It was exactly like this but yellow. I'm only 5'5" and still couldn't lay straight. Major condensation! I didn't sleep a wink. We went back to town, returned it, and got a proper tent. Thank you again for a lovely video. Hi, Claire!
I almost laughed to tears with this video, as I had my own "Titanic adventure" with such a tent-like thing ;) :P
I was tempted by it as I once needed a substitute for true ultralite camping gear (then beyond my budget) when I go for autumn/spring outings and need an emergency shelter "just in case", without carrying a true tent. I'm not a fan of bivy bags ;)
So I bought from a department store such a "tent" like this one in the video. Had little opportunity to test it prior mountains, just a weekend kayak trip in September with little to no rain. So far so good ;) Then I risked to take it in November for serious solo hike in mountains. I'm not that stupid - I was about using huts and solid shelters accesible in the range, but just needed 1-2 wild camps at the very start/end.
So I went... The evening weather on the 1-st day steered towards wind&rain pretty fast. I chose a protected place in small forest on the mountain pass and set up my camp. The first 1-2 night hours were nice, but then realised that my sleeping bag has some wet problem. Quickly found quite deep pool of water inside the tent. I could use my drinking cube for pumping it out and had to continue all night. So my Titanic was sinking till the very dawn, pumps were operated all time, just the orchestra had deserted somehow, I had to sing alone :)
I had to quit and fall back home (all the way from neighbouring country), fortunately had enough time to dry my gear and after a day to join my friends in another mountains closer home :)
    Regards,
    -J.

I had to chuckle when you said what the tent was 😁 We use that tent as extra storage when out in the campervan to throw in chairs, dog bed (not the dog! 😇, even he avoids it! 🤣), cookers etc. Hopefully you've save someone from actually using it to camp in but without the poles could be used as an emergency shelter type thing! End of the worl senario! 🤪

At the beginning of this month, we helped a couple of teenagers set up a tent they thought would be big enough for both of them. It was so tiny, I initially mistook it for a pet's tent! The weather in the Lakes was merciless-rain, sleet, and snow all at once. Thankfully, they wisely chose to call off their camping weekend. I am glad they did after I saw your video. Definitely not the ideal conditions for their first camping experience, even at a campsite.

So the moral of the story is you get what you pay for. I bought a similar tent by Ozark Trail for about $27 U.S. it seems a bit bigger than this one. I’m 5’9” and I fit pretty well inside. The tent is pretty water proof and overall a decent tent for the price. The only downside to it I’ve found so far is one, not the best in cold temperatures because like the one you’re using it’s only one layer and it has poor ventilation causing condensation from your breathing. Other than that it’s actually a pretty decent backpacking tent for the small price. Would love to see you review it. ☺️🤙

I bought a 1-person tent when I went hiking, and I have to say it is SO CRAMPED! Your tarp tents are much better :D I think, anyway, cause they're so much roomier. I can't even sit up in my tent.

Aww, sorry about the water getting in and condensation problems. You truly exposed this one. Frank was still smiling though. At least you slept and remained mostly dry. Concerts won't happen in that weather, but they still advertise it as a hiking tent for two!! Thanks for the reveal, you're a Star.

I can tell you back in early 80s in boyscouts we camped in Minus 32 degrees farenheit. Im surprised we didnt die. Tents didnt matter, they were old army. We didnt have any new fangled sleeping bags. Just lotsa fire and crappy sleeping bags. But it was snow so no freezing rain. We made it . Try lighting a fire when your hands cant use matches or a lighter. We figured it out.

We bought one of these about seven or eight years ago to use to store the stuff that travels inside our camper van while we're traveling. I'd never intend sleeping in it but it has done okay as a shed for camp chairs etc while we're parked up. Ours fills up with water as well in heavy rain and as we're not inside it the water must be a leak not condensation. It has stood up to some pretty strong winds while we were touring the Outer Hebrides (they pitch better if you angle the guy lines in line with the pole (so more out to the front and back than pulling sideways like yours were). Fair play to you for trying it but I'll stick to my Helm 2 and XMid for actually sleeping in I think! 😂

here are my rain tips from years of interest. i now think an inflatable mattress is awesome for having a dry ground for your tent. then place a poly tarp over your tent with the doorway pitched up with a pole. look for a tent with its poles on the outside giving space between the tarp and your tent. look for a tent with a mesh door and roof. the air mattress is intex dura beam 6 lbs for a 4.5 ft wide one.

Two years ago I bought a tent from Decathlon, the Quechua MH100. $49. Actually got it for $20 due to a flash sale. 20 bucks. I have taken that tent out in crazy windy rainy times (I was curious). It's my winter tent now; so many times its stood up to a morning dump of snow. Now true, when I go snow camping, I'm usually pulling a pulk. But I have had it a time or two in my pack. It's flukey really. Yet a half dozen of my group members all have the same tent. It's shortcomings?? Heavy. That's it. But not crazy heavy. 5 lb 7 oz. Certainly not a backpacking tent--not in the league of my Durston X-Mid-1, that thing is 28 ounces. But you know what, for let's say 50 bucks, it's stable, well made, not drafty at all, has multiple guy outs, and is simple to set up and pack away in its slick roll up bag. Also, flukey in that it has next to no condensation woes. I really can't fault it.
BUT true to this video, sometimes you DO get what you paid for. Look at Frank. He's vinyl, a little pale, looks leaky on his own.

Stayed in one of these in betws y coed whilst out bike camping last year.... Absolute w..k and when I say stayed it was about 4 hours before I decided to stick it in a bin, pack up my other stuff and cycled to capel curig and found a great little wooded area and tarp camped in my bivvy. 2 nights. And was better than that tent would ever be. ❤😊

I have a Eurohike tent - not that one. I have the Backpacker dlx 2 with great front porch and get 3/4 seasons out of it - at the moment - I did spray the bejesus out of it with waterproofing and tend to use a tarp at the front for extra room. Good to see Frank's getting some fresh air. By 'festival tent' I think they mean summer 30c without rain and to be chucked as soon as it does rain and you go home after your mud games in Somerset or Berkshire. Great do Claire & Frank

I'm paraphrasing here but, "If you're getting into camping on a budget, I'd wait & save up a bit more [...] but if I had just 20 quid to spend, I'd get a tarp. Tarp camping is a great way to learn," is probably the best gear shopping advice in general, and the best tent shopping advice in particular, I've ever seen on the internet or anywhere else. Loving this channel!

My wife and I had such a tent on our first multi-day hike 5 years ago.
140 km on 'Kyst til Kyst Stien' (Coast to Coast Trail) in Denmark.
It actually worked surprisingly well, even though it was very small. However, it was in the summer and we had no significant rain.
Today we have spent a small fortune on tents from MSR, Nordisk and Durston. 🤦

always buy water proofing spray to pre treat tents before any trips, learnt this even for tents that cost up to £100, always water proof a tent before use, as as water resistance is not water proof :)

Last July I was on the Isle of Wight, camping right on the south coast cliffs in my van (cheating i know😂). We had 50mph winds and sideways rain, it was horrendous. One day a fairly elderly lady, who had back problems and walked with a stick turned up and began to set one of these exact tents up. Realising she was struggling, I offered to help. It was her first camping trip, and she had come by train, taxi and foot to get there. When I asked how long she planned on staying, she said 4 weeks! Once I had picked my jaw up from the floor, I did my best to say she may want to rethink her tent situation but she said she'd be fine. By the second or third day she had moved it off the cliff edge to a more sheltered position. We had to leave a day or two later, but I often wonder if she stuck it out😅 fair play to her for going for it!
Great video as always, I wish I could do what you do. Im waiting for the kids to want to come with me😂

I live in Florida and I've camped here for 60 plus years mostly in tents. If you don't have a tarp to cover everything no matter how nice your tent is you're going to get wet! Torrential unexpected downpour is the rule and not the exception.

years ago I made a fabric cooking windshield from an old waterproof and 3 bicycle mudguard wires. Yes it's flamable but in over forty years it has served me well - I am careful tho'.
You'd get several windshields (of my colour) from that tent!
