- For this windy & rainy lil camp, I thought I’d try the lightest tarp I‘ve owned so far. Only 88 grams but I was seriously impressed with it :)

#WildCamping #Hiking #Tarp
I’m the guy who made the tarp :)
It’s called the Wild Sky Gear Wolf Solo tarp: I make them from Dyneema, the strongest fiber on earth. At 15X stronger than steel it reaaaally isn’t going to break.
I used a tent made from this exact fabric back when I was 15 and solo hiked Lands End to John o Groats in the winter. 1500 miles later and after blizzards and storms my tent was fine. It’s the poles, pegs or guylines which break long before the fabric gets anywhere near its limit, as happened here.
This one was a little noisy because it didn’t have any internal tie outs, but I make all my gear in Britain, and customise all my tarps free of charge with extra tie outs on demand. In these extreme conditions I would definitely add a couple to take the slack (which would cut the noise). I sell self adhesive tie outs so they can be added later too.
A wonderful video, it was people like you who inspired me to get out there in the first place. Keep going. HYOH.
Skye
Yeah, I was surprised to hear her say she was worried about it holding up. Also, glad to hear someone making UL gear in the UK. Now if you could get people in Europe to switch to trail runners.... Haha Always surprised the heck out of me seeing all the boots and Gortex. Btw, probably gonna hike across Wales next year, and do the Irish Way. Do you have a store or is it all online?
Haha to be fair anyone who isn't highly drunk should be thinking about if their tent is going to hold up in such a massive storm, and that's before they use somthing crazy like DCF!
Yep we're online exclusive, we do sort of have free next day delivery on everything though :) Have a great time on in Wales, which trail are you tackling: offas dyke national trail is a cracker.
Trail runners are the way, although in these delightfully damp islands waterproof socks sort of become essential. I totally get why everyone here wants goretex, it's good for shorter hikes (95% of the UK outdoor market). It's when you're going serious distance goretex becomes a rather wet poisoned chalice.
@@WildSkyGear just finished up the TA, may head home to redo the AT, but next year is the Irish Way and maybe the Wales Cistercian Way, or the Coastal one.
They do get tiny holes over time if they rub on anything. Still works but that’s another thing to watch out for. All of my gear is DCF and it’s worth every penny.
I'm looking for a really rigid tarp at the moment, plenty of those i recon, but the problem is weight. The tarp is going to complement a hilleberg tent, be above it basically to act as both a roof outside the opening and as shade. It needs to be a huge tarp, at least 5x5 meters. probably longer in one direction. You make sizes like these with this material?
How cute was sweet Robin 😍 I didn't realise how much of the footage he was in haha! I'm gonna get some mealworm so that I can offer a snack next time
Robins are my favorite we have a few on the farm, they are very tame
@@DavidOliver-jh8oq my name is Robin, you´re my favorite too!
Love Robin friend! They are very territorial. Oi get off my land he was probably thinking 😅
A tarp & large fishing umbrella would make a good shelter, the umbrella modified to have loops to tie guide ropes to & the tarp over the top with ropes crossing over it all to secure it all down...
Maybe the Robin was looking for that Drinking Moth Caterpillar! Wonderful videography and great problem-solving as usual!
Claire, you are one of my favourite outdoors people. You go with the flow and deal with elements and don't edit out the challenges. In fact that along with your upbeat attitude, loving the experience is part of the allure! Good on ya lass keep it up!!
Thanks so much :D 💚
@@WildBeare I am old but I have crossed Russia, Siberia, China and all the way to Hong Kong! You do very well showing the reality of wild camping. Quods!
Keep it up please!
Well done . Sounds like you were sleeping in a salt and vinegar crisp packet ...
Great work
Hi Claire, I am an Army veteran (57), I really enjoy your adventures and the way you push yourself to grow, our heads can play games when on our own in the sticks so I doff my cap to you, well done.
Helloo! Thanks so much :D I'm quite fortunate in that I like my own company, and the creatures of course hehe. Have a great weekend
When robins appear loved ones are near as the old saying goes. It is meant to be passed over loved ones saying hello to you, or just trying to cadge some food. 😂 Lovely never the less.
Aw that's lovely 💚 it was really nice having him around :)
This woman is so freaking precious. Like an angel from the heavens above. I don't have much to be happy about in life anymore but I ALWAYS find myself smiling when her videos are on. Thank you.
Youll look back on this time and laugh,,things will get better
Just a bit creepy bud.
@@krackerman3628 I'm really happy that your life has been so good that you don't know the feeling of even the slightest happiness/wholesomeness feeling Heaven-sent. Honestly, I am.
Might I suggest though that you spend your time counting your blessings and spend less time insulting strangers on the Internet for no reason at all.
@@Uncle_n00b Pay the haters no mind. They hate, only because they themselves are miserable sods and they want others to join them. You have a lot to be happy for, this little thing called life, is so amazing. Enjoy your human experience the best you can. We're only here for such a short snippet of time, then we return to the spirit world once more, to be with our ancestors once more.
That's even more creepy. @@Uncle_n00b
Another great video. No-one could ever accuse you of being a fair weather camper. Hats off to you.
👍👍
The little Robin was seriously checking out the situation. So cute! That's some hard core camping! Great video!
Thanks, he was so cute wasn't he 😄 I didn't realise he was in so much footage in the background haha
@@WildBeare He was like checking the situation, saying "it's my place there, don't hang there for too long"
What a lady, never ever fails to impress us no matter what challenges and element she faces 💜
Well done Claire. I reckon you could camp in a crisp packet!! ...Oh, hang on, you just did! 😂😂
For real
Haha yep! Thank you :)
A £189 crisp packet! 😂

Claire, your adventures are incredible! Your channel inspired and encouraged me to start adventuring and uploading. My wife and I marvel at your ability to challenge yourself. Your joyous outlook on life is infectious and I am grateful to have stumbled upon your channel. Happy adventuring!
Aw thank you so much that's so nice :D good luck with your channel, I find it a wonderful creative outlet. Hello to your wife 👋 happy trails friend!
Credit where credit is due Claire. You certainly put yourself and that tarp through its paces. It's definitely a summer rather than winter shelter, but in an emergency, it is better than nothing. I loved the Robin. It was like you were invading his home. Another great video, Claire. Thanks for sharing.
Hi Chris! Thank you :) aw yeh bless lil Robin, I couldn't tell if he was curious and wanting a snack or if he was trying to see me off haha. He popped by to see me on the next camp over the hill the day after too 😍 thanks for watching! Claire
I like that you pack so much into a short video. I also like that you do not put in a lot of food prep and food cooking into your videos. Thank you for also including the bad weather. Finally, I enjoy your commentary, and you even film when things go badly, and are not afraid to show that when the situation has become dangerous, that you can retreat to safety.
I love the fact that you talked to the animals. Beautiful scenery. Thanks for the video and stay well and warm.
Such a stark dichotomy between your character and your environment. It is the epitome of the survival mentality.
Thanks so much, love it out there with its wildness :D
The uncrushable spirit, the optimism, tenacity and drive make you the most lovable wild camper on the planet Claire. Thank you for taking us with you on your amazing adventures.
Ms Wildbeare, youve got me thanking inanimate objects. I said “floofy” at work the other day and all the truckers gave me an odd look.
I enjoy your channel immensely. I watch you camping and its more enjoyable than me going out and doing it myself🤗
Ahh haha I bet they did 😄😄 thank you so much for watching my lil videos, means a lot :)
I certainly always enjoy the range of different situations you camp under. This camp has a little bit of everything. Wildlife, Mother Nature and ultralight equipment. Thanks for sharing as always.
I love that you had a little friend helping you pitch your shelter. 🐦
Minimal gear in a tough environment. Well done! Thanks for taking us along. Cheers!
By FAR the best wild camping channel on TH-cam. Can’t wait for the next video!
Happy valentine's Claire. I think that robin loves you ❤️
I live in the Pacific Northwest close to the Olympic Rainforest and your bad weather videos sure are a big help! I learned how to make a cozy camp for myself by watching how you set up yours. Once I learned how to use guy lines and stakes from watching you I was able to set up my Lanshan 2 person 4 season tent and survive wind storms in Hawaii last year. It took me about two hours to set up my tent but it stayed up and I stayed dry for 9 days. I just laughed every time the trekking pole fell over and it collapsed. I enjoy going out alone and spend time with nature. If you want the company of cute animals sing show tunes to them. Don’t know if it works with bears and mountain lions. Your videos are like 3 D now! Next purchase is the Bivvy bag and tarp you use.
What you call the Pacific Northwest is actually the Pacific's northeast. ;)
?
I love you my wonderful wild friend! I have so many things to thank you for, your amazing videos being just one of them! 🥰🥰
Ahh bless you, I love you too and I'm SO exciting for our next adventure 😍 it's been too long
@@WildBeare sooooo excited!!!!!!! 😍😍😍
YOUR FAMILY MUST BE SO PROUD OF YOU, YOU ARE SO AMAZING. ALL MY RESPECT ❤
Wow. You’re so amazing. Not just the wild camping, but the recording of yourself in these situations is awesome!
That tarp did look light, nice set up, held up great, you are one fearless lady, great vid as usual 👍
I love how you use the terrain to mitigate the wind! When I’m using a tarp in windy conditions, I use a bungee cord or two for tie downs. The bungees allow the tarp to move a bit in the wind and helps prevent damage to the tarp grommets. Well done!!
These are long nights Claire so well done. It isn't easy sleeping under a tarp like that in the wind and darkness for 14 hours. Thanks for the date references as well!
Your definitely one to brave the elements. Great video. Love watching ❤❤
You're perpetually positive attitude is so awesome. I haven't been wild camping since the kids came along but you're inspiring me to get back out again!
You are the consummate outdoorswoman. Enormously brave and resourceful. Thank you so much for bringing us along and showing us these beautiful and breathtaking places. Please stay safe and careful.
More good insight into a survival situation, well done. Pulled it off once more, good insight “could it have initially been a tent from a tarp set up” who knows what’s next but a canny wait😎
You were so funny with the tarp! Cute little curious birdie and a pretty caterpillar too. I don’t know how you weren’t exhausted after that noisy night. Oh, no and your boot, soaked! You’re a trooper for sure. The tarp really did surprisingly well. Thank you for sharing!
You bring the outdoors in to our living rooms with every video, as we go with you on your adventures from our armchairs, well done for bringing a calmness to our lives.
Thanks for taking us along on this adventure. Your ability to adapt and improvise is admirable. Loved it. But, you have to keep your boots dry!
Claire, i have finally found my comfort video, in order to cure my insomnia. The breeze, the sound of boots stepping on those grass, really nice background music, rain pouring and your voice! REALLY goes along together and it calmed me down real quick. Have more pleasant and wonderful adventure out there👍God bless you
Aw yay, thanks so much, so glad you liked it :) have a restful week 🤗
What a sweet welcoming committee: Little Robin Redbreast!
The tarp held up very well considering the neverending wind.
Thank you for another brilliant adventure, @WildBeare 💨💨💨💨
You don't half put yourself through some ordeals. Hope you enjoyed that one. Good job the robin was there to keep an eye on you. 😉🐦⬛🐻 Thanks for uploading. 👍
This was a joy to watch. Probably my favourite one yet. I love gnarly camps like that. Some people would say improvise, adapt, survive. You say improvise, adapt, have fun. Very uplifting to see.
Duke of Edinburgh Award, right there! Seriously though I'm showing my age with a statement like that 🤐 I remain in awe of your achievements Claire! You challenge yourself again and again while still remaining sensible, assessing all the variables and always having a well thought through exit strategy. You are a role model to anyone in your age group or younger than you. If only a few of them "get the bug" it's already worthwhile. Meanwhile, I'm sure that all of us oldies are also enjoying inspiration from you in every new upload. I never stop learning, because every day is a school day and in all honesty, I have never pushed myself to the limits which you have. Bloody well done! 🤗
👏👏👏 💚
Thanks so much :D yep I agree, every days a school day! Hope you're having a great week
Love your adventures. You're not afraid to get out there and explore. So much fun to watch. Thank you.😊
Test the tarp. Test youself. What a fine storyline hook! I think that tarp should now go on all of your trips for unexpected situations.
You are a wonderful inspiration and also absolutely mental. I love your content. keep up the brilliant work. I hope you've been spoilt for this valentines day.
You are such a brave and awesome person.
I'm glad I found your channel
Robins are very special birds, my stepdad always used to get a robin in his garden, overlooking him towards the end of his illness. Now i get a robin in my garden alot of the time overlooking me, this began in my garden when my stepdad finally passed.
New subscriber, but I love your videos, you have guts girl thats for sure.
That's very sweet 💚 sorry about your stepdad. Thank you and welcome to my lil channel, hope your week is good :)
A good marriage takes the good and the bad, that's what you have Claire,a rock solid relationship with camping and the outdoors.
Hey WildBeare, Aloha and warm hugs from Maui!🌴
Always great watching you out in the elements from my comfortable armchair inside in the warm. I hope your films encourage the youngsters of today to go out camping in the same way.
Great video, Claire,
I recon you're heading up to the little ruined shepherds' hut that you have had tried camping in twice before. With differing out comes.? I hope you had better luck this time. xx looking forward to watching it
Thanks, could be 😀 Hope you're having a great week
Thats a great little accessory less than 4oz keeps you dry. Look forward to what's next.
That was one of your more minimalist builds. Even contending with all of that wind and rain you did a fantastic job. Brilliant! I'm trying to figure out what you're doing with the pole. It's a cliff hanger!
Ha ha the Eryri robins are cheeky little buggers - they often appear to check ob whether you're up to no good I find ;-) My guess with the pole is that you're going to try another abandoned roofless shelter and this time use the pole as a central tarp support.
I watch this because I’d like to do it but I’m to old and stiff to do it now but I enjoy doing it through you keep making them. Good job.
Going with the caterpillar theme, I had this passing thought that you had pupated in your sleeping bag, only to emerge as a butterfly in the morning! 🙄🤭🤣
That must have been an uncomfortable night, Claire. I’m happy you survived it relatively unscathed.
I’m looking forward to ‘Part 2’.
Stay safe.
You are quite mad! I love it! Good choice on the double choc mochas too, those are amazing.
Claire, you are a gutsy woman! I can't wait for your next video. Thank you for another adventure. Much love from Texas ❤❤❤
That was a tough tarp ;0) and you love your pastries lol x
fantastic video. loved your little friend, so cute. great to see you you managed a rough start to your camp.
Amazing ClaireBear. Hardly any shelter and tools yet you had a comfortable night! Well that's showed me, hasn't it. You find the right places and just know they will work for you. Sorry about losing your little boot in the night. Shows how bad the weather was. Great survival, you wild thing!
Well done beautiful and you’re a trooper with a lot of patience. The landscape and views are amazing out there but the weather is rough. Love the tarp setup and the waterproof setup. Definitely something I would like to have for wet situations. Happy Valentine’s Day too!!!👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👍🏼🍻👊🏼😁
Wow mate you are as mad as a box of frogs but you are also one of my favourite wild campers keep going be safe ❤
Happy Valentine's Day Claire Me Lovely and what a wet and windy camp you had there and can't wait to see your next video drop take it easy now Me Lovely👍😊🌧😊👍❤
I wish I could hear you say poofy everyday because it brings me joy.
WildBeare essentials camping! What a tricky pitch, Claire. Maybe the robin sabotaged your guy line to test your abilities. 😂 Great video, I'm still smiling. Enjoy the rest of your week Beare! 🌲🐻🌲
Glad that you are safe and sound.
Hello from the rocky coast of Maine, Brunswick, Maine, US....
Early morning here in Australia and I have just watched you doing what you do best. Sets me up for the rest of the day. Cheers, Rich
Love it as always. It looks to me like you make your own closed captions and thank you as it really helps someone like me to be able to follow along without deafening the neighbors!
The caterpillar is a Drinker (Moth), Euthrix potatoria. They are usually in hibernation in January, so that’s quite an unusual sighting.
Beautiful closeup too, that camera (the Sony?) produced an awesome macro.
A drinker moth in dry January
That tarp is a bin liner thinking above its station..)
Great vlog as ever.
That "cute lil' robin" was basically shouting "Oi, get outta here! This is my territory". They can be quite aggressive, I've heard. 😊
Like Tweetybird when he gets his dander up! 😅
They are certainly aggressive towards other robins in their territory.
as always a great video and a joy to watch. was surprised the robin wasn't there for breakfast lol great test of the light weight tarp and its fixing points 10/10
I admire you very much, a hug from Italy
You´re really tough, and always a smile on your face. No matter what the weather is. And that´s why I love your videos so much.
Always enjoy your adventures. Love getting the different ideas on how to go out. But, I'll probably pass on this idea. LOL. Thanks for takin me along!
When I'm sat working from home looking at excel sheets it's very nice to have these videos playing as a bit of escapism.
You are one amazing young lady and tough as nails your videos are so well made you make me feel like I’m right there well minus the bugs, the wind, the cold, the rain and all the other things that Mother Nature throws at you and yet you stay so calm and your voice is so soothing and you smile through your pain it’s hard to believe that you’re real thank God you are you make so many of us happy and nervous at the same time you are truly admired and loved by so many.
Thanks Claire. As always, your videos never fail to inform, instruct and delight. Many thanks for sharing your experiences, your love of nature, and your philosophical appreciation of the natural world. Stay well & safe. Cheers.
'A bit nuts' - understatement of the year so far 😂
I love that nothing phases you and you smile through adversity. Keep smiling 😊
Love your videos! Always looking forward to your new adventures! Keep up the great work and Happy Valentines Day 😊
Hi Claire: I just want to say that your uploads and personality take me to a better place mentally and emotionally and I Thank You for that.
I had to put my coat hat gloves and boots on, just to watch this, I could feel the freezing cold and wind 😮
Very impressive WB. That looks like the times I went solo hiking. Such good memories. Good Luck and keep’m coming.
Love what you do when you do what you do.
Really appreciate everything you do Claire , so much respect you doing real life with the tarps and everything else. Do loads like this myself and it's truly tests your gear but yourself in all situations. Take care and another great video 🌷
Hey Beare..

G'Day to you again! I think about my Hitch Hiking around OZ back in 1971, found some amazing camping places ,dont know if you have ever done it, covering the camp fire ashes with dirt then putting your ground cover over it ,then sleeping Bag on Top, it keeps you nice and warm all night, ah what memories!
Loved the video Claire and the robin.
A video from @ScotlandsMountains and @WildBeare in one night! A great way to spend and evening.
The equipment you filmed with, produced a really clear picture on my Apple iMac. very nice video.
Always a joy to watch. You my dear are one Tuff young woman..
Absolutely loving your videos. Please please keep them coming and again i commend you for persevering and having the balls to do this on your own. 💛😇👍
Thank you for the lovely vid,C! I do miss the little hoppy pop at the end of your vids, though!🤣
