    I think it's real awesome how you still incorporate running with your bodybuilding. A lot of bodybuilders really make it seem like doing cardio is a bad/boring thing but personally having muscle and be able to run fast or do some miles has you feeling like a true athlete and " healthy " . Plus it helps you stay lean while enjoying more food .

    • @JaretCampisi
      @JaretCampisi  8 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      +Mike Exactly. There is absolutely nothing wrong with cardio and in fact, I always want to look like an athlete over just a body builder. So I make sure to continue sprinting, hurdling, playing basketball, snowboarding, surfing etc so that I never have that "meathead" look.

    Bro this is exactly what I needed. Btw have you ever made a video about super basic sprint programming?
    I'd love to do more of that as my HIIT cardio but not sure how to go about it. Like 5x100m, 3x200m, or 100/200/300, etc?
    I'd love to get my 100m up to a non-pathetic level lol

    • @JaretCampisi
      @JaretCampisi  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +VitruvianPhysique lol yea I am going to be doing lots more "how to" track and field and sprinting type videos since there is such a lack of good content on here and I think not a lot of knowledge on the topic in general.
      I think that could be a great workouts. The basics of how to design a HIIT workout on the track and give some examples of ones I do.
      If you'd like to see other stuff in this realm let me know...I ran for so many years at such a high level its hard for me to know what is and isn't common knowledge. haha

    Thank you so much for this video! I've spent weeks looking online for exercises and training routines to improve my speed, but I know enough to know that many of the things I found were pretty terrible. I'm so out of shape in terms of sprinting due to injuries from a while back, and I'm really keen to gain back, and then improve upon, the speed I once had.

    Love the video man! I'm a 400 hurdler as well! I was wondering what to type of workouts you do on your "off days" or if you're recovering from a hamstring injury. Also, you should video on how to run the 400 hurdles !

      @JaretCampisi  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +DaKingKJ96 Hey buddy! I will be doing videos on 400 hurdles for sure so stay tuned for those! As for recovery days (or off days) I normally just took them off or did a very light jog for 15-20 min followed by 10 min or so of static stretching. Recovering from a hamstring injury is different altogether and something you'd really want to talk with your trainer about as they very drastically based on severity etc.

    Thank you for this video! There's a lot of great info here so I will have to re-watch several times and probably take notes. If you do follow up videos it would help if they were with the same title like How to run faster part one; then part two, and so on. Also I do not recall your touching on the importance of balance because when running a person is briefly balancing their entire weight on one foot at a time. And which are the better exercises to improve a runner's balance. Thank you again!

Also, I've created a "Track and Field" playlist on my youtube channel where I've started to cover running faster in each different sprinting event so those would also be very helpful for you as well. Stay tuned, as I'll be making lots more track and field videos in the future!

    Great video Jaret. Can I make a request for you to do a video more specific to how you can learn proper running technique? Like the not breaking elbow angle, proper arm placement, and driving from hips? That you briefly touched on.

      +Jaret Campisi That too as in the push and pull portions of the plan.

    • @JaretCampisi
      @JaretCampisi  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Gabriel Soto You could definitely do the leg days and make those the priority. If you have extra time then maybe through in one of the upper body workouts each week as well or even combine them into one. I'd cut out exercises as needed too. Focus on just the first few big compound movements and don't spend more then 45 min in the gym. But yes, getting stronger all over your entire body will absolutely help you run faster on the track.

    Hi Jaret. Thanks for the great video. I just joined a competitive track team a few months ago and I'm running a 9.93 60m. Do u think that's a good starting place. Hopefully with your tips I will be able to get it down in the coming years

And sounds good, I'll be making lots more track and field videos so stay tuned and welcome to the team :) #teamjcampfit

    Jaret,
    Another very educational video. At the end of each spring, I coach 800-1600 meter runners how to "run faster" and I focus on doing speed workouts, max velocity and speed endurance (you refer to it as strength endurancein this video). They usually come to me already conditioned from doing cross country so I just work on form/technique. I wanted to vouch that your video here is on-point and it is was also good for me (a Masters sprinter) to begin to re-train. The good thing about coaching is to always review before training. I trained for 8 years as well as a sprinter for both the Air Force Academy and then the University of Washington in the PAC-10 and my best years were self-taught. Your instructions are good refreshers and most importantly, up-to-date. Stressing that quantity isn't always the best option over the right quality.
    Question: what are your thoughts on breathing exercises? I teach my runners to breath in their nose and out the mouth, but there are blogs out there that claim it doesnt make a difference. I take issues with that because breathing is important for concentration, getting oxygen into the lungs and expelling it out, and its good for focus as well. I don't agree that mouth breathing is a good way to run.

    • @JaretCampisi
      @JaretCampisi  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Carlos Hattix Thanks Carlos, I appreciate the feedback. Most of my understanding of running is based on my own personal experience and its been so great to share what worked for me so well and create a community around a sport I love so much. As for the breathing question, its actually not something I usually think about when running. I have more of an oldschool, natural approach when it comes to running. We have been running as humans for thousands of years so I tend to just let me body do whatever it wants to do for breathing. I've tried different breathing techniques but none of them seemed to make a noticeable difference for me as a sprinter. I think when you get into the 1600 meter distances and above that could actually become important though and could actually make a difference but I can't really say myself as I don't run those events :)

    Hello Jaret,
    Thank you for sharing your experience with the world. You've provided some very good advice. I'm a master's track athlete, and yes there are quite a few of us and it really is a blast too. You indicated that lifting twice a week and no more than two hard track workouts per week, will that same advice apply to masters. My main race in the 400m,I'm not sue why because as you know, it hurts like hell ! I'm 54 and avg around 58 this year for the 400, two years ago I ran 56 high. I want to get back to 56 for the 400 in the next 2 months. Currently I can make it on pace to the 300m mark at 42s which is 14s per 100m but the last 100m I die and lately cover that last 100m in around 17s. So 3 seconds off pace to hit my 56.x for the 400m. Can you offer any advice on what I can do to help my last 100m of the 400m. Thank You again for increasing the pool of knowledge with all your videos and advice

    • @JaretCampisi
      @JaretCampisi  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      First off kudos to you for still killin it at your age. I too hope to be training until they put my ass on the ground. Haha. I actually recommend 3 track workouts per week and two lifting workouts on your tech days. Masters athletes can actually train very similar to any other athlete. You just have to be more careful with allowing your body to get proper recover through rest and diet and take rest days as needed. Having trouble finishing your last 400 is very common and to a certain point everyone ties up during that last 400. It's just a combination of getting in better shape through correct training, increasing your overall speed and running a proper race strategy for your current level of shape.
      I do offer track training programs on my website so if that's come thing you're interested in, def check that out. I'm working with some other masters athletes and they have seen great results and are really enjoying my training approach. Either way keep up the great work and best of luck

    Awesome vid, thanks. I have a question though about the weight training part. So you say that as a short distance sprinter you should aim for low reps and high weights, but how many sets should you do and should you go to failure every set? So could you please clarify i some simple terms? Thanks in advance

    • @JaretCampisi
      @JaretCampisi  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +y_oussef Sure. As a good rule of thumb you would want to be doing between 3-5 working sets which doesn't include your warm up sets. Working sets means you are stopping 1 or 2 reps shy of failure. So for squats you would do a few warm up sets then some heavy working sets say 3-5 sets of 2-6 reps. And so on for your other movements. Those are the strength rep ranges so it will help you to get stronger without promoting a ton of size.

  • @manbeerpigs16
    @manbeerpigs16 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Momentum also helps with holding your max speed... extra mass might help as long as it helps propel you forward and doesn't hurt your endurance

    • @JaretCampisi
      @JaretCampisi  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +manbeerpigs16 yes for sure...I always tell people you want to be as strong and as light as possible. Your strength to weight ratio is very important for track so you don't just want to be heavier for the sake of being heavier unless its muscle that will actually help you generate more speed and run faster :)

    Hey man, great video. I'm wondering which foot-strike do you prefer and why, mid-foot, or further up towards the balls of the feet?
    As a side note, I had no idea you actually sing the song you use in your intros. Sounds great!

    • @JaretCampisi
      @JaretCampisi  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Julio Alvarez When it comes to foot strike I usually don't mess with wherever people naturally land when they run. When I was coaching track I found there were many other things you could fix before that to increase speed.
      When it does come to foot strike it really depends on what you're doing as jogging and sprinting are different and it even varies slightly from event to event.
      When jogging I find I strike more on my heal and roll up towards the ball of my foot while when sprinting I land more on the ball of my feet and stay more on my toes so to speak landing more on the mid foot.
      I think wherever you land naturally is how you should run/sprint. It can get pretty advanced to try and adjust something like that so be careful.

    Hey Jaret, I'm currently trying to walk-on to my college's track team this fall but i keep having reoccurring shin splints. All throughout high school i have suffered from shin splints, each year they got worse and worse, up until the regional meet in my senior year where they actually caused a fracture in my right tibia, preventing me from going to the state meet. It has healed since then and am ready to go. I understand that everyone says its from not getting your lower legs used to the conditioning before you start increasing your workout intensity and mileage, but I have been pretty cautious about my increasing intensities and I have no signs of shin splints yet. I was wondering what exercises, as far as the lower leg goes, I can do to strengthen my shins so that I wont have to deal with shin splints again. Thanks!

    • @JaretCampisi
      @JaretCampisi  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Matt Miller We used to do a few things at Penn State to help combat shin splints. First, make sure you have a solid pair of running shoes that aren't worn out. Next, we did a bunch of toe walks and other feet drills to make sure we were warming up the shin area and the leg below the knee in general. You can see the warm up we did on a daily basis on my channel. Next, try and run on soft surfaces as much as possible. Also, running with correct running form will help prevent shin splints as well. And finally, sometimes you will have issues with your arch or how your foot is landing which can be solved with proper shoes and inserts.

    • @JaretCampisi
      @JaretCampisi  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Matt Miller Also, sometimes the problem is at your ankle, which you would want to refer to the first things I mentioned. And sometimes the problem is due to a hip or butt imbalance or weakness. Doing things like hip strengthening exercises, single leg lunges and squats could help that out. You could also just search youtube for body weight hip strengthening exercises.

    Hey Jaret, I'm a 100m and 200m sprinter in my school and want to take the sport much more seriously. I'm only 15 and amongst the other sprinters, I am the shortest. However I am growing in height but this effects the way I think. I don't know what the right conditioning and strength work I should be doing is. I've heard that lifting at this age could result in stunting your growth. And body weight squats do not really make me feel any pain till I reach the 200+ rep range. What should be the proper way to condition my legs and to make my legs more powerful?

    • @JaretCampisi
      @JaretCampisi  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Wyn Loong Chong At age 15 lifting will absolutely NOT stunt your growth. I started weight training around the age of 12 years old and if you perform the exercises correctly, they can give you a huge advantage over your competition. I've got a bunch of different sprinting and weight training videos on my page in different playlists. I'd highly recommend you check those out and start doing the workouts. I've also got a plan available on my website where you can purchase speed training plans so that is an option as well. www.jcampfit.com

    hey Jaret what do I do to recover from injuries or get rid of them, like for example when I get shin splits or get a cramp on my leg what are some quick and easy ways to get rid of them?? -Tristan

    • @JaretCampisi
      @JaretCampisi  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Taylor Escobar there aren't any easy, quick ways to get rid of shin splints unfortunately. There are a few things you can do to help prevent and treat them though. Try to run on soft surfaces, stay out of your spikes unless absolutely needed, ice and elevate your legs after practice, perform toe walks before running and make sure you're warmed up properly. Wear quality running shoes that fit you correctly and replace them once or twice a year etc. Leg cramps are usually do to overtraining or being dehydrated. Drinking more water throughout the day and staying properly hydrated will help with cramps.

    Another great video. I have a daughter who has incredible 200/400 potential, she is fast for her age. She is 14. I have her weight training, but I have not been having her do high weight/low reps yet because of a perceived fear of injury due to her youth. I have her doing moderate reps/moderate weight (6-8 reps). I was a competitive Powerlifter for many, many years, and had some pretty major success, but am feeling the affects of all the 1-3 rep max lifts as I get older. I guess I am asking whether or not you would have a 14 year old girl lifting heavy 1-3 rep/sets.
    Thanks.

    • @JaretCampisi
      @JaretCampisi  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Carl Wimmer Hey buddy, thats a good question....I would probably continue to have her lifting a little lighter and higher reps until she hits 15-16 etc. Most girls don't even lift, so the fact that she's starting this young and learning the correct way to do things will be a huge advantage for her. As she gets better with the movements you can try slowly having her lift more weights and see how her body responds.
      I ran track and field along with weight training for 10 years and I literally have no issues at all...although I was never training close to my 1 rep max for the sake of what you mentioned. So even when I say train in the lower rep ranges I don't mean you should be getting close to failure for the reasons you mentioned.

      +Jaret Campisi I can't tell you how impressed I am with your videos and responsiveness. I hate to ask too many questions, but I do have another.
      We are 3-4 weeks away from our first youth track meet of the season, my daughter is a tall 14 year old 200/400 runner. She is very close to a 27 sec. 200m. She trains year round, and is in great condition, but she needs to be stronger. What top things would you do in these final 3 or 4 weeks to give an additional edge? Thank you so much, I just subscribed to you.
      Carl

    • @JaretCampisi
      @JaretCampisi  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Carl Wimmer Hey buddy, thanks I appreciate it and I'm glad the videos are helpful for you guys. She is running some fast times at a very young age. Thats pretty impressive. Thats a great question...a lot of people screw up "peek training." At this point in the season the best thing you can do is slowly start to back off on the training and focus more on speed work. Giving her body a chance to recover from the years worth of training will do WONDERS for her during the most important races of the season. Start doing shorter workouts that are more speed oriented and lots of striders and starts to keep her reaction time on par. The 200 meter workout I recently posted would be great to do weekly along with the acceleration workout I've got on my page. Slowly backing off goes for the weight training as well. Start to back off on the volume of exercises and then you can cut it out all together for the last week depending how she feels.

      Legs for sure. Get stronger on the big lifts, squats, deadlifts, bench press etc and those will translate to the track. The stronger you are, the more powerful you'll be and the faster you will run. Period.

    • @ThatProjectHades

      more explosive speed (top speed) lower reps higher weight

    • @JaretCampisi
      @JaretCampisi  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +youtube assistance Project below is correct. For speed and power you want higher weight and lower reps. For Endurance training you want lower weight and high reps. As a general rule of thumb for speed training I say aim for sets of 2-6 reps. That doesn't mean you don't do sets of higher reps but for your hard working sets you'd want to be in that lower rep range which will help get your more speed and power WITHOUT gaining a ton of size, which is exactly what we want for track and field.

      Kory Powell you have to figure that out yourself but in The beginning go really light and controlled to get the form down

    No BS I'm looking for help. In 9th grade I ran 11.81 in the 100m, over the summer I did some plyometrics and increased my vertical by 8 inches. Then I did cross country (which trains the wrong type of muscles) and my vertical went down 4 inches and I wasn't running as fast. Then sophomore year I ran 11.52 and 11.3 something. Probably because my muscles matured or sometimg, I didn't train. This off season I didn't do cross country and I started to sprint train, work on blocks etc. Which I've never done before! I got all my times from only easy plyos and talent. I'm going into 11th grade and want to know what time I should expect now that I've incorporated sprint training (hills, parachute, blocks) and cut out cross country.

      Yeah don't run cross country. it will slow you down. for a time hard to say. Depends on how good of shape you are in.

    Good explanation. Way to keep things simple! I'm working on maintaining stride form. Got to have motor skills and motor mounts--stabilizing muscles, joints, and other tissue--in order to support the hard effort.

    should I go heavier since I go lower reps

    • @JaretCampisi
      @JaretCampisi  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes. The idea is if it says do 6 reps that means you choose a weight that you can barely get those 6 reps.

      +Al Gmz I was a 400 meter hurdler so I didn't run the 100 much but my PR was 10.6 in the 100. I also ran 21.3 in the 200, 46.6 in the 400 and 49.97 in the 400 hurdles :)

    you have some wrong information. most high level sprinters usually can hold max velocity close to 80m

    • @JaretCampisi
      @JaretCampisi  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Blake Freeman Yeah thats a pretty common misunderstanding. They don't actually reach their top speed until 50-60 meters and then they hold that speed until 80 meters. So we are talking only a few seconds at top speed and thats for the best sprinters in the world. If you google 100 meter times broken down by 10 meter splits you'll see the splits for the top athletes and when they reach top velocity, how long they hold it and when they all stop slowing down.

    the only way to get better at 100m is to run 100m over and over again. Same with 200 / 400 / ..

    • @JaretCampisi
      @JaretCampisi  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      that will help you improve a little but that's not the best way to train. There are distinct ways to improve your speed which I outline in this video and go more into depth on my channel with my other track training videos. If you think Usain Bolt only runs 100 meter dashes all year round for the last 15 years you're sadly mistaken. haha

    • @droidekka2
      @droidekka2 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      usain bolt himself said the maximum he ran in trainings last years is 200m. Why? Because it's common sense logic. You don't want to stimulate slow muscle fibers too much and grow extra weight on those when they are useless in sprints in the 100m & 200m tracks, practice makes perfect my friend.

    Went to strength straight. That is wrong. The #1 thing everyone should learn to run faster is get the right form. Forget speed work for 3 Months, get the form right. 0 speed work, just form form form from form. 3 Months.

    • @usainphelps1491
      @usainphelps1491 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Usain bolt doesn't use form. He holds the 100m and 200m world record.

      no, his form works best for him, so its a good form. he has scoliosis that doesn't allow him to use "textbook" form
