#14 - Exposing the Old Staircase, Removing the Last of the Walls and a Walk by the Rio Zêzere

- This week things really start to feel like they're taking shape at our stone home renovation project! Michael finally removes all of the walls and says goodbye to the last of the lathes, exposing the world's most rickety (but rather charming) staircase. As a pre-Christmas treat, we'll also take you for a walk at one of our favourite spots along the Rio Zêzere in Central Portugal.
Do we keep the staircase as a feature? Or are we best removing it and repurposing it somehow? We'd love to get your thoughts!

The stairs are cool! Fix them up best you can and include them in your space .
We agree 💛 thanks so much!!
😊 Your precious kitty would love for you to keep the stairs❤
Haha 😅 she loves exploring!
Great systematic approach to your working. Will pay dividends in the long run.
Thank youuuu ❤️
Fakro latter would be nice. This way you can get rid of stairs and open up space ,but still have access to attic.
Definitely. It'd be good to have some storage up there somewhere! 😊
Goodness you are amazing what a hard worker you are love watching the progress don’t forget to take more time just walking around that country side it looks very interesting love Christine and Max
Thanks so much! 😊 We are trying to wander off with the dogs at the weekend a bit more! A river walk coming in this week's episode 😉
I'd vote for trying to keep the stairs. (Either as The Best Cat Condo & Playground Complex Ever, or) maybe keep just the narrow top part & repurpose into some sort of a bookshelf or display unit.
& 8-9 hours to take down a wall, sort & de-nail any recoverable wood, cart away the rubble, & clean up the site seems pretty reasonable to me.
My sympathy for Michael's back, & my best wishes to both for a Merry Christmas!
Haha great idea!! 😻 Thanks so much. Merry Christmas to you too!!
Good job! You're certainly a hard worker, I hope your hands hold up after all the pounding they've taken. Oh, and get rid of the staircase, just put in some kind of ladder for accessing the attic. Merry Christmas!
Thanks so much 😊 Merry Christmas to you too! 🎄
Lol, I wouldn't be watching if you were 'normal', love the humour and the explanations. You're really good at making these videos.👍❤
😘 thanks so much!
What a before and after, massive difference. You should go with your gut feeling with the staircase, like you say, you can always remove it later if you change your mind. Sometimes it just adds character and charm to be there.👍
Definitely. Thank you 💛
The house without the walls looks great.
I think you should change the position of the ladder. It should make a mesanino because the roof is high.
Thank you 😊 definitely has potential for a mezzanine!!
Honestly, if it were my home, I'd remove at least the upper stairs. Once you remove the ceiling, there will be no function for them and might be more of a hazard than a nice feature. The lower staircase might look nice with a bookcase on top to create a reading nook. I picture a nice cup of tea, biscuits, and a book. Could be a lovely space.
I know what you mean 😊 having a reading space is something I'd love! Thanks for the lovely ideas!
Well done! Personally, I think you have plenty of head room on the main floor so that, if you keep the stairs as a feature, they could serve functionally to provide access to storage space in the attic - perhaps additional living space?
Thank you ☺️ yeah, we could definitely use them to create more storage or something!
Oh dear now what are you going to do !!
Can’t wait to see.
Now you have wrecked the joint Ha ha!!
😅😅😅
Great job💯 Meŕry Christmas and a very very Happy New Year
Thanks so much. A very Merry Christmas and a very happy New Year to you too 💚
Recently you talked about the humidity being so high in your home. Have you ever thought that the joints in the outside wall may be leaking?
This week I also watched a video on TH-cam and they happened to talk about if the joints in your exterior walls are leaking, moisture can enter very easily.
Just a warning, I am not a carpenter or a technical person. Keep up your work and I will continue to follow you
Thanks so much 😊 the walls definitely bring in moisture from outside so we need to figure out the best way to sort. Lime mortar etc.
Continue to open up as much space as possible you will be happy. Remove those stairs , close off the attic space.
Definitely 😊 thanks so much!
Given the poor supports and construction method, additionally the space - l’d be removing that staircase and replace it with a pull-down extension ladder up in the loft space. You have recovered and will restore plenty of other original features so as to not lose the integrity of the building.
Great progress! 👍
Thanks so much 😊 I think we are worried about losing the character like you say, so maybe once we've got the stone walls etc. we can just repurpose the stairs somehow instead. Thanks again!!
Could feasibly keep lower portion of the stairs in situ and use as a platform for a big vase or pedestal or something arty and the top portion u cld cut in half lengthwise and fix to a wall(s) for shelving for pictures and pots plants and trinkets perhaps that yv found abt the reno like those resin pots.
Great ideas! 😊 Thanks so much.
Keep them! They would make a rather quirky bookcase.
Thank you 😊 loving the bookcase idea!!
What a beautiful landscape around you.❤
Thank you 💛
I would get rid of them. Really enjoying watching you creating a blank canvas. Merry Christmas to you both
Thanks so much. Merry Christmas to you too 🎄
Good job man just be safe doing all the demolition
Thanks so much 😊
I hope the roof not leaking may you have to start fixing it before forning inside
It's not leaking 🤞🏻 but definitely a job for summer before we start the inside! Thanks so much for watching 😊
At no time did I think that watching your time lapse videos that it was easy, you are definitely not lazy. Your hard work is all worth it looking at how much it's changed already. 👍
Thanks so much 😊
❤ happy Christmas and a better 2024.
Lots achieved...great going.🎉
Thank you so much 😊 Merry Christmas 🎄
I wish you Merry Christmas! ❤
@AlongThePathsOfNature
Thank you. And to you! 🎄💛
I'm following your videos Hugs from Brazil
Thank you so much 😊
Great work, you have reached a mile stone in clearing the space. STAIRS: If you aren't going to use the space in the ceiling then I guess the stairs don't serve any purpose for your future needs. If you take them down you may be able to repurpose them some where else though.
Merry Xmas🎄
Thank you so much 😊 Merry Christmas to you too!! 🎄
Well done guys. Amazing progress. The staircase? Function over form Michael! If it doesn’t serve a purpose and takes up space…😂😂😂
Thank you 😘 haha...very true!!! 😅
Will the upstairs be living area? If so can you make the opening larger for a wider more useable stairs? If not then consider an outside access to the attic space and remove the interior stairs for more room.
Thank you 🙂 It will be a living space so we need to configure it... We're vaulting the ceilings but might have a mezzanine that we can use the ladders for.
Have you made any plans for using the timber planks from the walls. I gather that most of them have been really well protected behind the plaster.
Some of them are in really good condition so we'll probably make doors/units etc. out of them. I say 'we', you know I mean Michael 😉
💪👍
☺️
Thanks for your vid 😇💟💟💟 Love and bless you guys, beautiful you live there with the cat and the dogs close by the river, good work on the house stairs are ugly, what's in this little wooden box?
Thank you so much 😊💛
It's difficult to judge the staircase from a video, I think you will know how strong it is, and if it fits your vision for your house. It could have something that you really like.👍
It's definitely got something about it 😊
Take stairs put ladder make into a loft storage space
Thank you 😊
Yes!!!! Absolutely keep staircase. It's quirky and very interest8ng. Because you've gutted the inside, it's keeps a nod of original character. Colorado Cherri
Thank you, Cherri 💛 we think so too!
D’accord avec vous. Je vote pour le garder ❤
💛
Merry Christmas! Nice content, it’s a big job but you crack on every day. I would ditch that useless staircase, maybe use the wood to build something more useful or interesting. Best wishes always, Moody.
Thank you so much! 😊 Merry Christmas to you too my fellow Moody!
If you are going to use the area for storage you can install hide-away stairs to keep your open area plan.
Good idea! ☺️ Thank you.
Je trouve ce coin d’escalier plein de charme ❤ 😊tel,qu’il se présente. Cependant ses fondations bien qu’elles semblent efficaces me paraissent bien rudimentaires.
Merci pour le retour de la traduction en sous titre! 🎉
Thanks so much 💛 I'm still not sure what happened with the subtitles last week!
A stickler for details lol.😂
Tell me about it... 😅
How about a spiral staircase?!
This is the dream! We might have one of those into the lower rooms... 🤞🏻👀
☺️
If there're more waals likethis to remove or clean, this works much faster. Just use a demolition hammer or even a big hammer or even flat shovel and beat the wall on one side. It kan take af few minutes to weaken the wall but once the chalk falls of on one side, you just beat further on the emerged weak edges. Of course a "pé de cabra" will help you a lot further.
Thanks so much ☺️
I would get rid of the staircase. It serves no purpose. If you want to use the attic for storage, install a drop down ladder.
Thanks so much 😊
Remove the stairs
Thank you 😊
Get rid! Pretty poorly built and will detract from the renovated open room. Perhaps you can re-purpose it in an outbuilding.
Definitely! Will put them to use somewhere if we don't keep them ☺️
Wood is expensive maybe clean one of this Big board's sand it and then put some oil maybe it's wonderful 😊
