#19 - Uncovering the Stonework & Making Orange Juice at Our Restoration Project in Central Portugal

  • This week, Michael continues to expose the beautiful stonework outside the house while also getting frustrated with newer concrete additions! I (Becci) also join in with the render removal inside and get to work making orange juice from some of our many oranges.
Any ideas as to what we can do with the peel would be highly appreciated!
Thanks so much again for watching and please like, comment, and subscribe.

What your doing is seriously very hard core work!! I absolutely love the garden I think you both should treat yourself to building you a hot tub in the garden that would really help all those sore bones indeed. Just a little thought my friends ❤

I've always wanted one of those fire heated baths outside! I don't know if you've ever seen them but they'd be a welcome treat at the end of the day 😊 hopefully a little paddling pool this year, too! 😘

I use citrus rinds to clean the window of my oven and my kitchen sink. Sprinkle a wee bit of baking sofa on the surface and use the inside of the rind as a scrubbie.

Interesting article from Science Alert titled "How 12,000 Tonnes of Dumped Orange Peel Grew Into a Landscape Nobody Expected to Find". It's how Princeton Univ. scientists dumped 12,000 tonnes of orange peels/waste on land in Costa Rica and transformed the barren landscape. 🍊 🍊
For future reference, you can "can" orange juice for storage. You can also make jam/marmalade and make candied orange peels. You can use dried peel as orange zest (but only need maybe half the volume)💕💕

Orange juice in the store has been cooked and added sugar so you are lucky to be tasting the real thing!

40 things to do with orange peel that I have found so far on the internet - so if you don't have time to decide you can always dry them (plenty of things to do with dried orange peel too lol) I don't envy you the task of chipping off all that concrete render. Hope you are taking plenty of time off to enjoy life at the same time xx

The dogs add a nice dimension to videos: they make it not just human-to-camera-to-human. It's nice to see today's Becci-to-camera interaction as well. 😎
    - marmalade (requires juice & pulp as well as peel)
    - orange zest (it's easier to zest prior to juicing)
    - candied orange peel
    - dried orange peel can be placed in drawers, etc, to prevent mustiness; just as unembellished pieces, or fancied up in sachets or pomanders.
    - you can use the salted face of juiced citrus peels for scrubbing things like wood. The peel side can be used as a wood conditioner, but it can take a lot of working in to get results.
    - citrus peels can be composted. They just take a long time (i.e., a year or two) & slow the rest of the heap down.

Yes, squinting is rather a poor substitute for safety glasses...an eye injury will certainly delay progress on your house renovation. :0. Stay safe. So we can all enjoy more of the progress on your home!

The dogs are hysterical. The front walls are beautiful by removing the rendering. Are you going to repoint the stones, or render the front with plaster? looking good. Really nice episode

    Another great video!
Citrus peels contain d-Limonene, a natural compound that breaks down oil and grease. In a sealed jar, submerge orange peels in white vinegar for at least two weeks. Strain and use your cleaner around your home, either full-strength or diluted with water for cleaning. Smells good.

Thank you so much 💛 I definitely want to try this. Just need to get my hands on a big tub of white vinegar. I've never seen it here but must be looking in the wrong place!

Unfortunately I do know exactly how hard it is to get through concrete….it’s horrible and it completely wrecks you!!! It seems like concrete rendering was as good as asbestos and lead pipes back in the day!!! Exactly what our future generations are going to say about us and plastics I believe. Anyway, I appreciate you showing me your dreadful journey, I feel your pain but you’re doing a fantastic job! Yes, the dogs are adorable!

      @PortugalonaPostcard  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

😅 thanks so much. It would be interesting to see what they say in the future. We often joke that we're removing render and then someone will come along in years and add something back! 😊
