- Another week of render, mysteries, and problems at our stone home renovation in Portugal -- but it's all good fun! We're gardening, getting to work in the courtyard area, and Michael heads back in the house as the rain comes to chip more render off the walls.
This week's mystery: a little horseshoe hidden in the courtyard wall. A lucky charm? I've put it back in case but please comment if you know of the significance of this!

the holes in the walls were used for supporting the scaffolds. On the first floor, becouse it was used as lodges, they didn't mind in cover the holes, at the end, becouse they were also usefull for ventilation. On the second floor, where the living areas would be, they conver them up.

Watching other homesteaders, they make friends with similar people in the local towns, so they can help each other out. everything from digging / construction / knowledge / beams etc.etc. 👍 I always wanted a Wisteria but my dad advised against putting it near the house wall, of course, I didn't listen and only a few years later, . the tendrils lifted the roof tiles and made it's way into the attic space..🤐 Way to go, prune back hard , no fear of killing it. .🔪🪓
Yes, it's a very invasive plant
Definitely! It did grow out of control last year...and the vines! We're might give it an even harder prune next year. We'll see how it goes 😊 thanks so much!!
Thing about a wisteria is that if you keep the plant above ground tight and manageable, the root system will remain in proportion. If you let the plant ramble and get out of control, it will extend it's root system to support the plant. Keep your plant tightly controlled and pray that it hasn't been allowed to be rampant in the past.😂😊
Not sure how wild it's been allowed to grow but the neighbours (who used to own the house) are good pruners so 🤞🏼

What I heard on another channel who also was renovating a stone house was that the larger stones were put on the bottom because they were holding more weight.
Yes, you can definitely see where the bigger ones are supporting more. Smaller ones are apparently used where they're not on view too 😊 bigger stones showed more wealth!
The transformation of your property is amazing. Your a very hard worker and its showing in the work your doing. I know I couldn't have gone up in the attic part to take down the ceiling or spent any time in those old spooky rooms but you have done well. Looking forward to watching further videos to see how it all turns out.

they used small stones on the under side of the wall becouse they were building against the rock. The rock would give the structural support they need to the building.

Elk filmpje wat ik bekijk over doe het zelf in Portugal zie ik hetzelfde. Het dikke cement wordt van de muren gehaald en een prachtige muur krijg je te zien. Maar goed dat je dit handmatig doet want ik heb ook al gezien dat de voegen en stenen gaan barsten bij het gebruik maken van een elektrische beitel.
Succes bij de volgende klus. De Wisteria zal heel mooi gaan bloeien dit jaar. De plant was echt aan een snoeibeurt toe.

Orange picking / picker.
Don't know if someone has already suggested it, but you can get a pole with a metal, (maybe plastic), cup on the end, with a cutter than can be triggered from the far end. You put the cup end around an orange, and then pull the cutter lever to detach the orange. This will allow you to pick oranges higher up in the tree. This tool probably won't cost much.
You can even make your own, though it might take a bit of trial and error. Perhaps someone has a TH-cam video on how to make one :-).
Every time I see ripe oranges high in your tree, I keep thinking how to get them down safely. Now I remembered about the picker I describe above.

Interesting!! I'll have to have a look into it! Unfortunately they are very bitter still so just picking up a few as they drop and giving them to friends for marmalade 😊 but it'd be good to get them all down so we don't waste any. Thanks again! 💛

Those tons of elbow grease you put in there will pay out nicely - there is no other way to get your walls dry. Ver< impressive! The "horseshoe" might have been worn by a mule but I agree it was put there for luck - you may want to de-rust it and then either put it in hot oil or clod-bluem though. Re. the cement, have you checked it for asbestos - in the old days it was not only used for roofs but mixed with normal cement as well. As long as the cement remains undisturbed, it is no problem as the asbestos fibers are usually fully covered by cement, but when you take down the rendering like you do, asbestos could be releases. In any case, I would wear a mask and glasses - no use with a hurt eye, and even if there is no ascestos, there may be spores that are not healthy.

Minute 22:28, the difference between stones above and below the ground level could be about money / effort / beauty. Nice big stones, which cost more money or effort, selected where they were visible and more “common” stones where nobody outside sees or notices them. Later both types were rendered. Just a guess…

Have you any plans to pressure wash the stone walls after you take off the rendering? I know someone (lives in northern Italy in the mountains), who did that to his dry stacked stone home. The color of the stones was truly beautiful. It is such a beautiful piece of property. I see why you chose it, or it chose you. It also seems comfortable for you both to live in easily. The dogs and the cat like it .

Don’t know if you have come across TH-cam channel- make do grow? They are renovating a stone house in Portugal too. They are lime rendering walls and removing joists and beams too. Might be worth a look? Well done anyway I really enjoy your working videos. Cheers to you all Jeanette

I suggest you keep the Wisteria away from your roof as It will get under your tiles and invade your ceiling. I saw a video some time back where it done this and caused heaps of damage.🌱🌿🪴
