Great work Dylan! I think the other part of what Cornes was doing is leveraging the Rioli conversation for Port to strike a better deal in the Houston trade discussion. Whacking the Suns and then saying to the Victorian clubs Houston is better than Rioli, and you need to offer more than Gold Coast if you want Houston. Kane works in the media and offers his opinions and thoughts on a vast raft of AFL content, but, Kane is also an unofficial mouthpiece of Port to push their messaging to a broader audience.
Suns are essentially getting top 10 picks for nothing, with guys like Walter & Lombard. so them giving up pick 6 for Dan Rioli is not outrageous a proven premiership player when you consider they gave pick 2 for Lachie Weller.
Just Because someone has played in a primiership doesn’t mean they can are certain all stars. He’s ok at best, with premiership experience, and finals experience. 2 first rounders are ridiculous 1 top 10 should do. U Richmond supporters need to shut up
I listened to this thinking, "Have you done one iota of research? Do you know how the academy systems work?". I understand he plays the protagonist normally, but he came as concerningly ignorant. His job is at least partly to imform. I liked your analysis and shined a light on the good work GC is doing with their academy.
Good video, I was thinking the exact thing this morning when I heard it. Then reading a lot of comments trashing on Gold Coast had me shaking my head. So thank you for this video, I feel validated lmao
I get your take on points but in no universe is a 27 year old Rioli worth pick 6 and 13 or even 6 and 23 that’s Jeremy Cameron levels and less than what a 26 year old Dangerfield cost. At 27 he has anywhere between 80-140 games left depending on injuries. 6 alone should do it for Rioli with change. If they give 6 and 13 or 6 and 23 in this draft they risk giving up on players of similar or better skill that play a combined 300-600 games. Look at what the hawks gave up for Chad Wingard and how that worked out for Hawthorn vs Port. Fear this could be similar in years to come especially if Rioli retires at 31 or 32
You’re right. If you assess GC over the last 2 years if you cone away with Walter, Read, Graham, Rogers, Rioli and Lombard you’d be over the moon even while parting with 2 first rounders for richmond. Now do Shai and Freo’s first 2 picks, the guy is a generational talent, top 5 b&f finishes every year since 2020, top 10 league wide in score involvements in 2022 and 23. Excitement machine. If West coast wouldn’t take pick 10 and 18 for pick 3 why would we take it? It’s pick 10 and 11 for a superstar.
I agree to the overall idea and you have summed it up well. I just think pick 6 is a ludicrous overpay. They have pick 13, so i dont understand why thats not the starting point. If they traded pick 13 for him instead (which is probably still overs) they get: a good player at 6, lombard and rioli. I dont see why they cant get that all done. And if anyone says they need 13 for noble - they will get in a 1st for luko, which should surley be enough. I do get what you are saying about a mid not being a need. But i think you take a chance on whoever you get being a star. With the evenness of this draft their is a real chance they could get who they rate at 1 or 2 at pick 6. At least one of Reid, Smilie, Draper, Lalor or Gallagher gets to them and theres a very real possibility that player they could get is the best in the draft
Thanks for explaining it all, I get the intricacies now. If we move away from players having the power to nominate where they want to go (so weird) and Gold Coast could have put Pick 6 on the table for Dan Houston....things would have got interesting!!
This is excellent, Dylan. You’ve explained the scenarios so succinctly and clearly. It’s game theory. And, frankly, I’m not surprised that Korn can’t grasp it; that would require being measured and thoughtful, which goes against his tiresome sensationalism.
Great video mate! Only point I would challenge is that while trading pick 6 definitely makes sense for GC for all the reasons you outlined… they certainly could’ve maximised its value a lot more than getting Dan Rioli. Clubs would have been chomping at the bit for that selection and ‘overpaid’ just like the dogs did last year. Pick 13 + sweeteners as the centrepiece trade for Rioli surely would’ve got it done and been shrewder business I would’ve thought.
pretty reasonable take here. would like your opinion on why west coast would ship off barrass for picks but use them on an uncontracted baker who is a year away from free agency instead of taking them to the draft. which you would think would be the only reason you'd ship barrass off in the first place at their stage of a rebuild. somehow it's looking like 17 for bailey smith but 14 for baker which is a real head scratcher.
Yeah i agree with you on this one! West coast in a completely different space to Gold coast. They should be trying to acquire as many picks in the top 30 as possible, even if it means loosing baker.
Gold Coast have form for being plain desperate and overpaying for anyone wanting to go there and overpaying salaries. Richmond just wants to exploit this like other teams before them have. If Rioli were after a trade to a more normal club, I’d put his value at a pick around the early to mid 20s given age, talent level and contract.
IMO Cornes has mastered the art of rage baiting. He generates headlines and clicks via decisive opinions. Sadly this technique is highly valued as this brings add revenue. He has become subtle at this of late. Early in his media career he was almost shack jock in his approach. I think he leans into the rage bait to the detriment of a well reasoned opinion.
I disagree sorry mate. The idea is right, yes use pick 6 to bring in players who are going to help you win. The difference is pick 6 is thought to of brought someone who is much better than Rioli. That pick alone has a good chance of turning into more than Rioli whether they stay or go. The late picks can come from anyone for much less. So they are essentially paying overs for nothing, which they have done multiple times before and that’s why people are outraged. The fact that 23 is also being discussed makes this whole scenario even more of a joke. It’s paying overs at best and absolute disastrous at worst.
Great video but I don’t think you addressed Corn’s points especially in scenario3… “in what world is Rioli worth Pick 6 AND 23”. So by paying ridiculous overs this year and Richmond giving nothing back, they will be completely shortchanged next year when the bidding is much tougher.
I respectfully disagree. Rioli is worth pick 23 and that's it. The gross overpay for Rioli outweighs all of the points that you make. Gold Coast have plenty of options that are far better than simply chucking pick 6 away unnecessarily: 1- Trade future pick + pick 6 to go up the order even higher to get ahead of the Lombard bid. You can never have too many mids. You mention Rowell and Anderson as their future mids. They're both Victorian. Pick 23 goes to Rich for Rioli so they get a top 5 pick, Lombard and Rioli. 2- Trade pick 6 for multiple picks in the targeted draft range of players that they do want i.e. Queenslanders or players with lower flight risk. 3- Just pick a player they rate at pick 6 in the draft if a bid doesn't come for Lombard. At least the asset is then at the club. Throwing away pick 6 for a guy that is only. worth pick 23 seems crazy to me. I guess it would only make sense if Richmond was giving back a Future 1 and a Future 2nd to cater for the lost development time and the difference in draft strengths between this year and next year.
Mate, you made too much sense unlike him. Rioli is a quality player bf winner , a premiership player, and one of richmond best. Still in his prime his contracted. Suns need his class off hbf. His had a narrative on tigers for long now to.
Gold coast traded pick 2 for lachie Weller in 2017. The reason being that Weller was keen to play for Gold Coast and the 2 pick might not. That shows how much losing players affects them. Also now with their academy players coming through and they don’t need to pay their proper value, high end picks don’t mean much to them. I hope the afl fix the bidding system soon.
Well done. As for Cornes, he's a sensationalist and loves to grab headlines. There are some topics where I feel, he just doesn't know enough and therefore should not comment or, we should not listen. I am a Richmond fan and would admit that Rioli is probably not worth #6 - however - if Rioli is the missing piece of Hardwick's GC puzzle, THEIR value of Rioli is higher than the rest of the objective footy world. Therefore, Rioli might be worth #6 to GC because of his value to THEM.
If the suns were wanting just points I think it would make more sense to trade pick 6 which they could potentially get another first in this years draft and a future first too. Trade in Rioli for 13 which is much closer to his actual value. Gives them enough points for Leo, Rioli and more points for next year.
What would you do if you were Essendon, in regards to the Kako situation? If there is a couple of players that Essendon rate higher than Kako, would they choose not to match the bid, and take best available at pick 9? They might have a couple of 2nd round picks they can use if they don't match a bid as well.
Nah they’ll absolutely match. Essendon have two options: Trade up to saints pick 7 or 8 and make sure they’re ahead of the bid . Or get a guarantee that noone is bidding ahead of 9. That’s their entire job this trade period! They need Kako plus a mid imo
Hi Dyl. Your final point is exactly why this trade completely blows. Richmond get a massive leg up because of a false economy created by the Northern academies, yet WCE get crumbs for a better player, in a more in demand position, in Barrass. The whole system is a complete an utter joke.
After the combine results, Lombard is definitely a top 10 prospect. If he was Victorian he'd absolutey be a top 5 pick. GC will get Rioli and Lombard even if they paid 6 and 23 for Rioli. I'm certain Kane knows this.
You can't get rid of academies when you've got the Father Son rule stocking clubs at AFL and now AFLW levels like the Daicos boys and now the Campeorale boys.
Just because picks are less valuable to gc, doesnt mean they should just throw away picks. 6+13 that richmond are after is legitimately 3x Riolis value. If gc paid 6 which is already a HUGE price for rioli then sure, but gc cant be throwing picks away. Kane is right, the afl needs to get involved, but not to tell them how to trade. They need to take away most of their academy access. Its a genuine blight on the competition. Pick 2 for weller, the pick 7 and bowes for nothing, pick 27 for 17 or whatever it was for geelong, etc. Theyre a disgrace
The thing about Cornes is that he presents everything purely from his own point of view (which usually means what would Port do) knowing smugly that it's engagement farming. Which is how he makes so many seemingly naive & tone-deaf "objective" comments & defends his own stance as "subjective" without ever putting himself in another's shoes. I particularly remember him railing against long term contracts & advocating that yearly deals would ensure everyone tries harder (sic). Completely ignoring different personality types, family situations etc. He relished being provocative as a player & now makes a media career out of it, too. Maybe he wasn't destined to put out fires? 🤔🔥🚒🧑🚒
Rioli isn't a pick 6 quality player. Rioli has at times been a known quantity who produces the goods and at other times gone missing for long periods of his career. That's not what we should be arguing about. This offseason has highlighted a level of inequality, hypocrisy & double standards that undermine the integrity of the competition. Compare the discussion around Noble, Rioli, Huston, Barrass and Smith. The value inversions here are absurd. Especially when compared to free agency compensation picks. It's a circus.
Cal Twomey said it a few years back. The starting price for a player is the picks the other clubs have. i'll said it again for the stupid people 'starting price' Kane is a clickbait merchant. He is a smart guy and knows what he is doing.
Splitting picks usually means trading out a low pick for multiple high picks of a similar points value Are tigers going to give up rioli and later picks worth the same as pick 6? Surely not
@@jacksonrobbins2288 no, not to the same value as pick 6 but they also get rioli right? They’ll give them picks to help match bids, particularly futures i’d say for their bounty next year.
would it not be better to trade it for a future 1st with someone else? i cant get my head around 2x AA Dan houston being worth a pick in the teens and Dan Rioli, whos main individual accolade is a BnF in a bottom side, is worth pick 6 AND 23.
North have offered Port a future 1st for Houston which could be pick 2,3 or 4 .So I am sure Port would love to send Houston to North but players have way to much power these days
Thanks Dyl, very balanced, but please don't think that you need to validate KC's media persona to call him out. Reality is he's a far right wing media affiliated opinionist... not a journalist. He deliberately provokes division to generate attention (i.e. NRL Grand Final d!ickhead opinion over the last 48 hours)... sadly this is where sports journalism (and journalism) is heading.... which is why your channel is more important than ever before. You're doing an amazing job. love your insights...
Full disclosure I follow the Tigers…he knows Jack sometimes…Tigers are getting pick 6 ..pick 23 is Joe M opinion…Rioli is a leader and premiership player with at least 100 games ahead of him..Pick 6 is no guarantee that it will give you 200 quality games ( Will Phillips pick 3, Dow pick3 , L O Brien pick 10, A Francis, etc etc) I think Pick 6 is fair and reasonable …
The AFL should step in and do something about Cornes and his degrading comments. They silenced Sam Newman by banning his comments from airing and e posing the AFL’s incompetence, but why are they letting this knucklehead go?
It’s being reported that Richmond want more picks in addition to #6 - not the other way around. So while I understand your point it doesn’t sound like GC will get many later picks to help accumulate points. With regard to Kane, he’s looking at this from a PAFC POV, and tbh he’s kind of right - how is #6 (plus potentially more) sufficient for Rioli, but biased VIC media think PAFC should be satisfied with #13 for Houston? Both 27, both HBF, but one has been voted in the best 22 in the land for the last 2 years, while the other one has not gone anywhere near that.
@@brycepretty1889 yeah, but they haven’t spoken about future picks which will be in Gold coast’s favour. The houston point is irrelevant because it has no bearing on what pick 6 is worth to gold coast. I agree that it’s overs for rioli and a competition problem, but irrelavant to what Kane said that “Gold coast are stupid”
@@DylanAlexanderFollowsDraftit’s not really irrelevant considering Gold Coast hold both pick 6 and pick 13. If you’re looking to get more points, then wouldn’t you trade with Richmond for what Rioli is worth (pick 13 is a fairer reflection), and use pick 6 to get even more draft capital? Pick 6 would likely satisfy port Adelaide and facilitate teams such as Carlton and Collingwood to send more picks back to the GC and therefore more points
I dont think it's so much about what it does to GC. But gee, theure giving their competition a whole heap of free kicks. That's the bit that doesn't make sense. Last year Geelong cashed in, this year, Richmond, two powerhouse clubs, victorian of course because thats where most players come from. It's a bad strategy, it says, were not trying to win the premiership, we dont care if we strengthen our competitors
I don't believe that was what Kane Cornes problem was though mate. Kane went on to say that for a player such as Rioli, to potentially net pick 6 and Richmond ask for more? That way overs. Like he dosn't fault Richmond for asking for the biggest price, however ludicrous it is they'll fetch and milk the best price they can. But the negligence and blatant disrespect from GC in that they're not trying to be more aggressive in their responses. Like they just knocked back the idea of pick 6 and MORE but pick 6 is okay? Houston a dual AA is being talked about pick 13 as the catalyst that gets a trade done for him. So how is it justified that GC don't make more demands. That's not to say they won't, but they're being far too nice and cooperative fir a pick that should easily land them Rioli and ALOT more picks. Especially for the future.
Only Richmond flogs think he is worth pick 6 and 23 GC should only be offering pick 12 pick 6 alone is overs but he is contracted so they will have to pay more and everyone thinks GC is a soft touch/pushover
Richmond is asking for ridiculous prices thru picks for all its players. Rioli is not worth pick 6, Bolton is not worth 9,10 and Baker is not worth 14. If I was West Coast I would say to Richmond, we will pick Baker up in the PSD. If you pick him before us, he plays for a year and then we get him for nothing.
Cornes understands all that you've explained - how could he not - and knows that Rioli was contracted for another 3 years so GC were always going to have to pay a good price for him & they understood that when they made him that offer. Don't forget GC got a bunch of late picks back to help with their points situation. Richmond could've played hard ball & kept him, but they've always been fair in dealing with their players & with other clubs, which helps with future trading. Cornes is a clickbait merchant. This is about crafting 'content' that multiplies with people responding to him, both on legacy & social media. He's been trying to manufacture a rivalry between Port & Richmond for years, and he's effectively saying Richmond's B&F player (who was a 1st round pick in 2015) isn't worth much to rile Tiger supporters. It's also fashionable to bash GC for their mediocrity since entering the league. The idea that the league should step in to this situation is ridiculous.
@@sentimentalbloke185 yeah its interesting because Cornes’ language has completely flipped on this topic. When I posted this video I was responding to his criticism of GC. He asked the question “what are they doing?” Since then, he’s completely flipped. All his energy is on the ripple effect to the rest of the comp.
@@DylanAlexanderFollowsDraft Proof positive that he fashions clickbait, but it's also indicative of most in the football media having the short-term memory of a goldfish. The deal is a win-win. But no one seems to be willing to discuss the ethics (& legality) of inducing a player to breach their contract.
Off topic, but how would you feel as an Eagles fan when the club is about to trade pick 14 for Liam Baker? I don't feel good Do you think this is overs? Especially in such a good draft year
@@milbosclip I think it’s slightly overs but it’s more what it means to west coast! It’s so important for them to hit the draft! So pick 14 is more valuable to them
Sick to my guts. Appreciate that Baker is a reasonable player, wants to come to come to WC (which isn’t nothing) and might be worth pick 14 to a team making a serious run at finals (and so are willing to pay overs) but he’s not worth pick 14 to WC given where we’re at and how long he’ll be around for. Hold firm on an offer of a second rounder. Be willing to go to the preseason draft and see if Richmond really wants to force a player to stay who wants away. If that happens then nothing lost and he can be picked up as an unrestricted free agent the year after if it still makes sense.
+1 subscriber, the cleanest AFL video I've seen, well done mate.

Man I wish you called in when he opened his mouth this morning.
It isn't pick 6, it's pick 6 AND 23 that Cornes has an issue with.
The starting price for a player is the picks the other clubs have.
i'll said it again for the stupid people 'starting price'
Kane is a clickbait merchant. He is a smart guy and knows what he is doing.
Kane Cornes is a great Muppet who works as being a shock jock.
Splitting picks usually means trading out a low pick for multiple high picks of a similar points value
Are tigers going to give up rioli and later picks worth the same as pick 6? Surely not
@@jacksonrobbins2288 no, not to the same value as pick 6 but they also get rioli right? They’ll give them picks to help match bids, particularly futures i’d say for their bounty next year.
would it not be better to trade it for a future 1st with someone else? i cant get my head around 2x AA Dan houston being worth a pick in the teens and Dan Rioli, whos main individual accolade is a BnF in a bottom side, is worth pick 6 AND 23.
North have offered Port a future 1st for Houston which could be pick 2,3 or 4 .So I am sure Port would love to send Houston to North but players have way to much power these days
AFL should intervene in all trades now . I’m sure if PORT got pick one for Houston he’d be fine with it
Thanks Dyl, very balanced, but please don't think that you need to validate KC's media persona to call him out.
What happens now that Richmond traded all of there late picks to Brisbane?
Full disclosure I follow the Tigers…he knows Jack sometimes…Tigers are getting pick 6 ..pick 23 is Joe M opinion…Rioli is a leader and premiership player with at least 100 games ahead of him..Pick 6 is no guarantee that it will give you 200 quality games ( Will Phillips pick 3, Dow pick3 , L O Brien pick 10, A Francis, etc etc) I think Pick 6 is fair and reasonable …
So what’s Houston worth than in your opinion?
Same age, same position, but only one of them is a dual all Australian
@@brycepretty1889 great question …definitely 2 early picks
@@DylanAlexanderFollowsDraft
PAFC receive: pick 6, lukosius, richards
COLL receive: Houston
GC receive: noble, COLL future 1st, PAFC future 1st & potentially later picks to satisfy point needs
Rioli's near that for sure. Houston shouldnt have been AA this year. But I do rate Houston is a higher tier player.
Kane is just salty richmond is getting pick 6.
@@Power_Prawnstar yep 100% they strengthen a rival! That’s the main issue with what they’ve done
Opinions are like arsesoles and everyone has got one and Kane is both
He probably doesn’t get it because Rioli isn’t worth a top 20’pick
Dan Houston doesn't want to play for the suns mate, his name is largely irrelevant in this discussion.
@@edvverdport can demand a top 6 pick just like Richmond are is the point…
Rioli isn’t even worthy of tying Houston’s boot laces.
@@brycepretty1889 the whole purpose of this video is going over your head
Only Richmond flogs think he is worth pick 6 and 23 GC should only be offering pick 12 pick 6 alone is overs but he is contracted so they will have to pay more and everyone thinks GC is a soft touch/pushover
Richmond is asking for ridiculous prices thru picks for all its players. Rioli is not worth pick 6, Bolton is not worth 9,10 and Baker is not worth 14. If I was West Coast I would say to Richmond, we will pick Baker up in the PSD. If you pick him before us, he plays for a year and then we get him for nothing.
just dont cry when we get all those picks ok
Kane is a shock jock and knows this take gets clicks and attention
Mock draft?
Kornes is right Dan Rioli isn’t worth a top ten pick
Is he with more than Houston …??? I’d say no . Seems ridiculous by the suns
Rioli actually wants to play for them though, did you watch the video or just jump to the comments to have a sook?
Kane is a troll !
@@KenWalters-n6t professional!
Pick 6 is ten times better than Dan Rioli lmfao
Off topic, but how would you feel as an Eagles fan when the club is about to trade pick 14 for Liam Baker? I don't feel good
Do you think this is overs?
That's okay, you don't understand the draft either. You're just an AFL commentator, like Kane.
kane is right
