With the release of the Canon R5 and R6 many Canon users are funding their new purchases by selling off their older camera bodies, so lot’s of 5D Mark IV’s and EOS-R’s are finding their way onto the second hand market place more recently. So which one would you get? Let me know down below (:
Some months ago i bought a Canon EOS M5. At a low price range it offers great autofocus in combination with the touchscreen. I hope the Canon EOS R's price drops also. Think i would go for the Canon eos R!
5D4 all day. When it breaks, I will buy another one. Y’all can keep that mirrorless tech. The day I buy a nitro less camera is when they no longer make DSLR’s. Plus I hate EVF and absolutely hate the battery life on mirrorless.
I have both the EOS 5D MKIV and the EOS R. I too have come through the 5D ranks using all the 5D models. I do like the EOS R, however, where I feel the EOS R falls short is in bright daylight photography.
Great review. I have both cameras. I do landscape and wildlife. After many years of using the 5D4, I am used to under expose by 1/3 stop for bright outdoor. When moving to the R, I don't have to under expose for bright outdoor. But the EVF is quite misleading, it always look over exposed. I had to adjust the EVF brightness so I don't think I am over exposing for landscape. For wildlife, the R is the better camera. I bought the R a couple years ago mainly for my trip to Kruger NP. Before the trip, I have tested both extensively at home on my 100-400mm L and the R is sharper with my 100-400mm L, way sharper. When taking bird photos, the feather grains come out way sharper with the R. For landscape and portrait, both cameras are the same in sharpness. For macro, the R is sharper. While in Kruger, I used only the R (and the 100-400mm L) because I can manually drag the focusing point anywhere to get to the animals eyes; I can't do that with the 5D4. I am extremely please with my Kruger NP wildlife photos. I can practically count the eyelashes on the animal eyes. I don't think my 5D4 can give me that kind of sharpness when it comes to wildlife. I prefer OVF over EVF anyday for landscape. I can see the gradual change of PL filter better with OVF comparing to EVF.
5D mark iv has good Imagine quality, color depth and good for sports and bird photography.compare to eos r...not everyone wants 4K videos .may be youtubers or vloggers or enthusiast but every professional still photographer will choose 5d mark iv over eos r.canon mirrorless camera need more time to settle ..so I will wait for stable mirrorless body for a there heavy rf lens ..
5D Mark IV is reliable, colours (skin tones) are great straight from the camera. Battery last longer than EOS R. I missed the flipping screen at first but I am used to shoot whithout it now. It is always up to personal taste but my personal opinion is 1) Canon EOS R5 2) Canon 5D Mak IV 3) Canon EOS R. I would love to see a 5D Mark V one of these days....
There.. Nobody is talking about this. A green tint on skin tones from eos r photos is so so evident and no one is talking about it. Being a fashion photographer, color is everything and it (eos r, rp) kills the whole narrative of canon color science.
Great review man! What I think sets you apart from many of the other review channels out there is that you are actually creating stuff with the cameras you review, like doing photo sessions and creating short films and using them for corporate work, etc, which is one of the reasons I actually trust what you're telling me 👏 keep it going 🔥
This was brilliant Kai! We love both of these cameras and have used the 5D Mark IV quite a lot when Wera was working at a photography studio last year. That thing is a tank! It's a tough choice, but think we would still go for the EOS R just for the convenience of the flip out screen, the size and weight and eye AF. It's quite weird going back to an older DSLR and using AF point selection for portrait shoots for example! The results from the photos looked very similar but both looked great anyway.
Thanks for sharing Aaron! It's great to hear the experiences from experienced users such as yourself. The newer tech inside these cameras certainly make the user experience much easier. When I occasionally go back to my 5DMarkiii I'm always tapping the screen for DPAF! 😂😂
For the photo comparison, native glass is so important. The lens mount really makes a difference. The pics from the 5D stood out to me as much sharper with less distortion, more contrasty and journalistic looking, suitable for a magazine.
I picked the 5d 4 over the eos-r as out on moorland doing landscape i needed something with durability, waterpoof, rock solid, like most of canon dslr before. the eos-r is more in my mind a light use camera but still a great camera from the images i seen from it.
The 5D Mark IV definitely holds that durability badge as far as I'm concerned. I've also used it out in the rain, snowing and cold conditions in central park in NY and hot humid climates like Malaysia and it just keeps on giving me the results I need for my clients! Saying that I am trusting the EOS-R more and more and a lot of content creators I follow, have used it and swear by it, so that's also a reassuring tick in my book, time will tell (:
Is it me or does the Eos R look a bit more saturated with the colors. Almost as if the skin tones don’t add up. Either way, the 5d mark iv will still do the job.
Kai Creative mainly vlogging travel vlogging also sit down vlogs ! We would love to have a wide angle lens. End of the year we are gonna do a southeast Asian tour
Great review. I have both camera's, boughtthem second hand. The EOS-R with RF f4-7.1 24-105mm for €1050 and the 5D Mark IV body for €1100 . I use them both , it was my intention to use the R for holidays . Onely the RF L lenses are to expensive, I have a f2.8 16-35mm L , second hand for €600 and a f4 24-105mm L for onely €350.
exactly the dilemma I have right now. I don't want the R6 due to being only 20mp, and the R5 is too expensive for what it is (I don't need advanced video) and the sony A7R IV would be a cheaper option. So I am left with the choice between EOS R or 5D IV
The EOS R is lighter and smaller for sure, but it's misleading because you'd also have to carry around more batteries because the battery runs down 2 to 3 times faster than on the 5D MK 4.
Andrew Collier made an interesting comment regarding the photos he said that he needs an increase in magenta by about 12 units on the EOS-R to match the 5d4 when the white balance on the 5d4 is set to daylight. I shoot raw so it’s easy to adjust. I love both cameras and they both have advantages for different jobs. When i got the R it took me a while to work out what the difference was and why the daylight WB looked different. I often use both together on the same shoots so getting a balance was important.
I have a 5D MK IV and I love it especially some 'L' series glass. I wanted however to break into video and so bought a Sony A7III and use the meta-bones adapter so I can use the existing canon glass. Not being experienced with video, I am wondering if I made the right choice? Still in order to use my EF glass on the EOS-R, I would still need an adapter, what do you think?
Thanks for sharing Roy. I've heard really good things about the Sony A7III especially love the recording frame rates and that cinematic colour. I've never used one though, so can't really pass comments on whether you made the right choice or not... what have your experiences been with the A7III? Are there issues you are experiencing as your looking to switch?

I had the 5d4 before and replaced it with R. I had difficulty with the new settings, and the dilemma now is whether I should keep it or go to R6. If we can get more clarification on this we might get a software or even hardware hack to "fix" this intentional limitation (:
🤔 from my standpoint: ‘Usability’ is having more than just 4K as a filming option (i.e also having 1080). ‘Overall convenience’ of use would be not having to have additional kit (like the Atomos Ninja V )to be able to record 10bit. Does that makes sense ?🤔
My 5D3 died of old age and the dilemma is which one to get as a mate to my current 5D4...A very nice chap who was selling his 5D4 said definitely go for the R (which was counter-intuitive for his sale). So I just don't know. If the lottery ticket comes up it'll be an R5. Aaargg ! 🤣
Your Markiii died 😯 how did that happen? thought they were near indestructible😬 mine is sitting in a draw - I’m thinking to pull it out for a 2020 review 🤔 anyway - having come down the Canon full frame DSLR route myself, 6D, 5Dmarkiii, 5DMarkIV I was a little apprehensive to get the EOSR, I was going to skip it altogether, but after using it now for a bit it’s definitely the camera that I’m going for more and more for personal projects ( I have yet to really use it for corporate work due to the freelance drying up this year) but it will probably accompany me alongside my 5DmarkIV when things start to pick up again (: R5 is another story - I’m trying to get one to play around with - but proving a little bit tricky 😔
@@KaiCreative I trust your reviews more than any others because you don't just highlight the new gear's positives, you give a better +/- evaluation. I am looking forward for your evaluation of the R5. I've had my 1DX and 5DIII since the day they were released and they have been fabulous but 10 years old I think it might be time for a change. With rumor that there will be no 5DV I am considering switching the 5DIII for a 5DIV before they get discontinued or both for R5. My photography is mostly wildlife on safari's in Africa, Nepal, Galapagos and Antarctica, also trips to the Himalaya. I do not shoot a lot of video. I already know that if I go to the R5 then I will be keeping my EF lenses because the current R offering has long zooms that "breathe" in dirty air. 1 trip with a EF 100-400 and it needed an complete internal clean. Another concern of mine is the battery life, I'm hoping to get a full day of shooting on 2 batteries...without sacrificing (having to turn off) camera features (sometimes I've also had to go 2-3 days without charging options available). Also of note for the R5 to me was the Exposure Compensation was more limited +/-3 vs +/-5...but perhaps the sensor captures more dynamic range so they felt they didn't need to go further?
Hi kai, I use the eos r , I can't understand why photographers are moaning about 1 card slot .I think photographers have been spoilt, what did they do when it was just film. Did they moan then. Just saying lol. Hope all is good enjoy your vlogs 👍🏾
If your a professional, you only got to loose 1 wedding and it could cause you untold reputation damage! Used hard SD Cards no matter the brand DO Fail! Hence the Dual Card Slot importance. Not all Wedding Clients will pay for you to be present the whole day, therefore your time is better spent getting good memories for them rather than pratting around with your MacBook Pro keep uploading Photos from the Cards.
Your right, back in the day. 1 card is all we used. Also we never relied on autofocus. Now, they just critique the latest technology. While pros continue to rely on old gear.
8 years of professional photography, shot one time event like weddings, even if I used dual cards on my 5D IV, cards never failed once. Although if you're doing professional you want to avoid the unexpected. And being a little paranoid sometimes helps you avoiding very big issues with clients! Nowadays I work for a studio as a photographer and retoucher and I shoot personal project at home, so I don't need that level of safety and reliability anymore.
Good question! I guess the easy answer would be the EOSR if I was using an M50 and the 5D Mark IV if I had been using an SL3. But also depends a lot on what you want to do! If you're using the camera for your own content creation then I would probably favour the EOS-R, but it I needed something reliable for professional photoshoots I would probably pick the 5D Mark IV because of the dual card slots (:
i had canon 6d and swiched to sony a72 but i dont like sonys colors and image look flat. No 3d pop efect is it true all mirolless camaras image look FLAt versus dslr ?
@@MazdaMike0122 If you like DSLR its a great deal. A year ago on Christmas they were like 3600 new. The EOS-R is my personal favorite but it can be a little bit laggy in the viewfinder if you don't have the settings right. Even with the LAG I land 80% more shots in focus than with a DSLR because of the eye AF and no need for Lens Micro adjustments. If you have RF Lenses tho then no reason to go back.
@@jonpremosch9544 The R does have some advantages that I like and for a refurbished one it's $500 cheaper than the 5d4. The L lenses I have are EF. 24-70 f2.8L II and 70-200 f2.8L III. I doubt I'll be upgrading them to RF any time soon though.
@@MazdaMike0122 IF you don't plan on upgrading Lenses any time soon and are comfortable with shooting on DSLR you would probably be better off with 5dmkiv. It is significantly more responsive than the eos r if you are planning on adapting lenses. They are essentially the same camera for the most part just depends on what you are more comfortable using. They both have amazing IQ and colors. I have never used the RP but that is also probably pretty good. But also if you are going off pure value. the 5dmkiv at launch was 3900 and the Eos R was like 2000 so the 5D is technically a better deal at the price it is going for refurbished. It is 2000$ cheaper than launch price vs only like 700 cheaper for the eos r.
I would not use an R professionally for photography because of the single card slot - is it a big deal? if you lose one wedding that could be really devastating. - the R is a lot of fun to shoot on though 🥺
@@mirasga I know someone who lost an entire shoot on their R - the photos did not end up on their SD - luckily they had an extra shooter on the day! Even though they were able to salvage the event it’s a traumatic situation to have to deal with other! I highly value redundancy, and being over prepared - it’s not really an either or situation, you can have both
@@deebea6364 I am shooting with an R for 2 years now. I don't need the 2 card slots. It can send the pictures via bluetooth to my phone while shooting. Also, when a flash memory fails, it won't lose any data, just can't write any new. I had an SD failure, the R said "No Sd card", popped in a new one (this took like 15 sec), and was able to retrieve all the data i had on it. I would never go back to shoot with dslr.
@@NOM4D20 I’m shooting on 2 Canon R5’s, and love the Mirrorless system - the 5d4 and the R are just very similar spec wise and basically put out the same photos - except the 5d4 has the dual cards while the R has some nice mirrorless perks - the R is a great camera, but I would never use it for a wedding or professional work. I know someone who was second shooting on an R, and lost a full days worth of photos... luckily the main shooter managed to catch everything between whatever the latest 1D is and an R5
Hi Kai, thank you for your very valuable video! Picture and video quality seems to be pretty similar, but I think that one of the major difference between the two cameras is the fact that when you are shooting with a mirrorless, not only you can hold the camera and the video screen in different positions, but you can also see the outcome of your shoting in real time and evnetually adjust exposure and framing according to what you see on the scrren. On the other hand, if you like to shoot by looking throught the viewfinder, rather than looking at the screen, you might not like the digital viewfinfer as much as the optical one. With the 5D you can only shoot by looking in the optical viewfinder. That I think is also a good point to consider. Cheers! Ciao, Luca
Sounds like you’ve never shot with a 5D as what you’re saying is incorrect. You can definitely shoot stills and video by using the screen in the back. And specifically video can only be shot by using the back screen.
Eos R - poor ergonomics. If you are used to a full-sized DSLR, you would not be happy with the EOS R. Basically requires the user to curl up the fingers of the right hand in order to avoid hitting the wrong buttons on the back. That multi-function bar at the back is a killer. It works by capacitance so therefore provides no tactile feedback.

‘Usability’ is having more than just 4K as a filming option (i.e also having 1080).
‘Overall convenience’ of use would be not having to have additional kit (like the Atomos Ninja V )to be able to record 10bit.
Does that makes sense ?🤔
@@KaiCreative Yep, totally get it now! Thanks for the reply.
I want the eos r, why dont they put dual slots?
Pain point indeed 😓 the newer R5 and R6 both have dual slots ☝️
I’m newborn photographer wchih one batter ?
canon R mı Canon 5d mark 4 mü arasında kaldım . tercihim canon R oldu ;)
5:40 MUSIC NAME ? pls
Also of note for the R5 to me was the Exposure Compensation was more limited +/-3 vs +/-5...but perhaps the sensor captures more dynamic range so they felt they didn't need to go further?
which is good battery life 5 d mark4 or 90d?
How are the audio qualities on each of them?
Why do u have ur videos with a log filter??
why do u have log filter when u speak??
Hi kai, I use the eos r , I can't understand why photographers are moaning about 1 card slot .I think photographers have been spoilt, what did they do when it was just film. Did they moan then. Just saying lol. Hope all is good enjoy your vlogs 👍🏾
If you are shooting a client for money and the single card goes out, you are screwed.
@@markc1844 I guess if you really had to you could keep your phone connected and have the camera constantly upload to the phone over bluetooth.
Nowadays I work for a studio as a photographer and retoucher and I shoot personal project at home, so I don't need that level of safety and reliability anymore.
colours nicer on 5d but looks 1/2 stop under exposed
If you were coming from a crop frame camera (M50 or SL3) which one would you choose?
Good question! I guess the easy answer would be the EOSR if I was using an M50 and the 5D Mark IV if I had been using an SL3.
But also depends a lot on what you want to do!
If you're using the camera for your own content creation then I would probably favour the EOS-R, but it I needed something reliable for professional photoshoots I would probably pick the 5D Mark IV because of the dual card slots (:
i had canon 6d and swiched to sony a72 but i dont like sonys colors and image look flat. No 3d pop efect is it true all mirolless camaras image look FLAt versus dslr ?
6d best
I currently have an Eos RP with a couple of L lenses. I'm still trying to decide which one to upgrade to 🤔
eos r. I have r5 and im bout to sell it.
@@jonpremosch9544 I definitely don't have the money for the R5. I have been leaning towards the 5D4. Canon has them refurbished for $1750.
I was a professional photographer during the 7D era. Single card has never been a problem. I have dual cameras and multiple photographers for events.
@@mirasga I know someone who lost an entire shoot on their R - the photos did not end up on their SD - luckily they had an extra shooter on the day! Even though they were able to salvage the event it’s a traumatic situation to have to deal with other! I highly value redundancy, and being over prepared - it’s not really an either or situation, you can have both
@@deebea6364 "photos did not end up on their SD" you mean their R failed to write anything on the SD card?
This video is a little biased towards eos r
Not 32MP. its 30MP
I see no difference here.....
Eos R - poor ergonomics. If you are used to a full-sized DSLR, you would not be happy with the EOS R. Basically requires the user to curl up the fingers of the right hand in order to avoid hitting the wrong buttons on the back. That multi-function bar at the back is a killer. It works by capacitance so therefore provides no tactile feedback.
if you "struggle" to see the difference then this is not the filed you should be in.
if you stuggle to spell "field" maybe you should not be commenting.
