And the plus side of you being stuck at home is time for a very informative video. Stuck at home too (Texas). I have shared a backyard photo with our neighbors every day for 137 days. We all need a little distraction. Your comparison is right on time. I need to make a big leap from a 70D. Your review today was on the two cameras on my short list. Thanks for the real world subtle differences. It looks like the R5 moved to the top of the list. (And not that you don't want birds in your backyard but watch feeding them. We put out a feeder to attract Monk Parakeets. We now have 40+ show up twice a day to be fed.)
hehe, yes, I don't always feed, just from time to time. Glad you enjoyed the video. It's both pretty great camera, with the R5 just having so much newer and different technology
Recently purchased an R5 but had to wait for my CFexpress cards to arrive. I was using an SDHC 300mbs card and I was disappointed in the lag in flight. I now have the CFexpress its just great. Thanks for your videos you have been a terrific help in setup. I can't wait to get back to Astro up in the Kimberley next year when the Astro session returns. The dramatic improvement in ISO quality will be really valuable for clean images. Keep the videos coming mate that are great!
@@jan_wegener No doubt. I will continue to (mostly) not use the SD slot. I do have a couple smallish type II cards, but as even those were slooooooow on my 5D 4 and 7D 2, I didn't use them. Just got a 2 tb Delkin, as it was double the cost but 4x the size of the 512....Amazing how tech has advanced. My first PC hdd was 1.2 gb, that's like 1/1800th as big, and my first CF card might have been 512 mb, if that..and cost abt $250!!
Thanks for such an informative video🙏. I'm glad the 5D4 is still being talked about by the pros like yourself. Financially, my only option for now is the 5D4. I haven't mastered it yet so I'm not in a fired up hurry to jump to a more expensive camera anyways. I'll learn what I can from the 5D4 and then maybe think about spending thousands to move into the mirrorless world.
5D IV is a great camera, which has a few limitations, especially, frame rate, AF and buffer size. It has done a great job for me for years, so I am sure you will have a lot of fun with it
Thank you very much Jan for the great review. Here are my observations re the subject: a. I’m using Canon DSLRs for wildlife/bird photography for last 12 years and didn’t have mention-worthy issues. However, the MILCs do seem to perform better in focusing. b. I won’t always be concerned about eye-detection focusing if I use mirrorless camera because, most of the birds feature their main beauty in the feathers. Focusing on the eye with a premium lens might make the feathers little blurry which I don’t want. I love watching the eye-soothing color combinations and variations on their wings, neck, back and breast with details. c. I’m curious about the performances of the less glamorous Canon MILCs like EOS R6 and EOS R. I might be attempting to get one of those because I prefer images produced by bigger pixels. I hereby congratulate Canon for achieving seamless compatibility of EF and EF-S lenses with their MILCs via adapters. d. As an enthusiast I use Canon EF 300mm f/2.8L IS II USM always with extenders, mostly 2x. The bodies are EOS 7D and occasionally EOS 5DII. I hear rumors that 7D mirrorless version is in the offing. If so, that'll be great. e. I have a feeling that, on the MILC I should be able to stack extenders and still get AF in the EVF. Could you let me know your opinion on this? f. Wildlife Biologists maintain that use of flash for wildlife photography should be avoided if possible. There’s valid possibility that sudden burst of intense light might hurt their eyes which may be blinded for a while. If the bird takes off with such an impaired vision, it might hit an obstacle and get hurt of even die. Thank you again for the great video.
a. The AF of the new R5/6 is pretty amazing b. If you use the right amount of DOF, focusing on the head will still give you all details in the plumage c. The R6 has similar Af performance to the R5 d. This will depend on the build of the extenders. The latest EF extenders could not be stacked without a few tricks. Yes, it seems like there might be an R7 at some point f. I can see that point during the night, but not really at low power settings during the day.
Hi Jan, great video and very informative. I upgraded my 5D iv for the R5 mainly for the auto focus system but primarily for the speed. I too found the buffer on the 5d wasn't much good if I had both film formats selected. The only way I could get continuous shots was to switch off raw. This had an adverse effect if I wanted to tweak the photos afterwards. I've only been to a bird sanctuary once to test the R5 and the results were amazing. Still learning with the eye detection auto focus. I shoot a lot of motorsports events but unfortunately all the tracks are closed to spectators. Overall I'm glad I made the switch. Keep up the good work Jan.
Sounds good! Yes, I am loving the big buffer. I only shoot RAW, so it was always an issue! Yes, getting to know the eye Af is a process. It does have a bit of a mind of its own
Thank you for making this and posting. Consider editing it to reflect the setting changes that solve the viewfinder problem you thought you had. Some viewers won’t see the corrective comments. Cheers
You mean in regards to the flash? What I say in the video is still correct. When you turn on a flash it turns off exposure simulation, which is very annoying, when you are just using a fill flash. What I need would be a way to force exposure simulation to stay on and we don;t have that. You can only turn it off, but that doesn't help.
@@jan_wegener Yes, I am referring to the flash disabling exposure simulation. Since there is a menu setting that allows the camera to behave as you wanted, many viewers will get the wrong idea if they only watch the video. Many viewers won't read the comments that mention the ability to change that behavior and will think the camera always disables exposure simulation. I'm glad you mentioned the problem with breath condensation on the screen making it unresponsive to touch. If mine ever comes in I'll be sure to set it up from the start so I won't depend on the touch screen for things that often get changed during a wedding day.
@@markwillride There isn't a setting that makes it behave like I want to. There's only a setting that does the opposite. Yes, I was surprised when the screen suddenly didn't do anything until I noticed what happened.
Very interesting video Jan well done mate!.... I had a lovely email today telling me my R5 has been dispatched today from Canon Europe and will be with me next Tuesday ...4 more sleeps and it will be here yay!...
RE: Flash Issues - I saw another review in which the reviewer showed that there is a setting that enables the viewfinder to behave as that in a DSLR camera. The setting is called Expo. Simulation. You may want to give that a try. I am still impatiently waiting for my R5 - hopefully soon.
Hey, yes, but I want to do the opposite. I want it to always behave like and EVF. ATM with the flash attached it changes to behaving like an OVF which throws me off and makes it more tricky to use with flash. So I could easily turn off Exp Simulation. But I find it really useful in combination with the live histogram, so I would want it to stay on irregardless of the flash.
Jan Wegener I have a EOS R and on that one you can add to your favorites menu a shortcut to toggle expo sim on and off. Sadly you cant add to a physical button...
I also have come from the EOS R and have used the same approach as Alberto. ie Set up MyMenu to quickly change to Display when I attached a Flash. Hence I was a bit surprised when I noticed Jan mentioned that attaching the flash does this automatically, since this would make the menu I set up unnecessary. So I did some tests and what I discovered is that for both the R and the R5 the following happens, if a flash is attached and turned on: Case1. If the simulation setting is enabled it does simulate until the shutter button is pressed (including histogram) and then goes to "Display" for the period of time that the Exp timer is set, for which the default is 8s. It then goes back to "Simulate". I changed the Exposure timer to 4s and it changed to "Display" for the 4s, when I pressed the shutter, returning to "Simulate". Case2. If the "During" setting is enabled, the behavior is different and it behaves like Jan said and will always use "Display", there is no point pressing the depth of field preview button in this mode if a flash is used. I guess a shorter timer may make the first option more usable, but a better option would probably be to have the depth of field preview button have some useful function in case2, such as override the exposure timer.
Another great video! Thanks! I currently have the 6D Mark II so either would be a step up for me. I'll keep the 6D Mark II for landscape photography but I'm leaning toward the R5 with your reviews. The bird eye focus and fast frame rate are strong selling points. The flash concerns are something I'll have to watch out for. Thanks for bringing these to our attention. As far as I can see, the R5 is still not available for general purchase. I'm hoping the camera and the 100-500mm lens will be available by Black Friday...
Hi Dave, yes there's a bit of a delay in shipping for whatever reason. I am still keeping my "old" 5D for some other work that I do, too. I think the Flash thing is an inconvenience I haven't found a solution for yet. It does seem to not do that with off-brand flashes interestingly enough.
I recently got a tip that I should try using eye detection for BIF. My test plan collapsed since the Puffins left the nest holes earlier than expected. I'm told that it was a bumper year for them with an abundance of food.
Such a balanced and informative video. I like the comparisons betwn the two cameras. I like the setup in your backyard, what fun. You covered so many unbiased and experienced bases here.
one if the things you could have covered with the extenders is in the mark IV is that it only has auto focus with the 2x extender in live view mode when at f11. It has no autofocus at f11 in the viewfinder. The R5 has autofocus going up to F11 so you will get auto focus with a 5.6 with the 2x extender on the R5
Yes, that's a good point. I don't have any 5.6 lenses atm, so I never really ran into that situation, but a very valid point for some of the lenses coming out these days.
SLICK!!!!! awesome vlog buddy, just what i needed! your vids are firing me up in these troubled times! I cant wait to get mine....oh nice knife skills too lol 😂
Great video and usual, Jan. Filled with lots of useful information about both bird photography and also technical aspects of the R5 and 5D. I currently own the EOS R and would like to get the R5 since I want to move my system over to mirrorless. I look forward to your next video!
Excellent excellent review and many different practical scenarios... thank you!! I just bought a R5 and I am pretty sure my 5D Mark IV will start gathering dust unless I sell it off altogether.
Very informative video Jan. Many thanks. I am looking to upgrade and am considering the Eos R. For me it is a decision about investing in RF lenses versus EF. It looks like Canon are really putting a lot of innovation into mirrorless. So am thinking of making the swap now rather than investing more in EF.
From a mark iv to an Eos R? If you can I’d try to get at least an R6. I don’t think canon will release anymore DSLRs or EF lenses, so mirrorless is the future, but for now you kinda need both systems.
Although the R5 is higher spec'd than what we are used to, so is the R6. It makes sense for these new iterations of this series of camera to be higher spec'd and makes you wonder what the R1 will be able to do once released!
Great video as always, I have the 100-400 mk1 lens and was wondering if I should break the bank and get a newer mk2. OR new thinking - get the R5 with an adapter, save for another year & potentially get the 100 - 500. Thoughts? Thanks in advance Russ😊
Mirrorless is definitely the future so I would want to invest in that. In saying that the upgrade in the 100-400 would also be a big step, but the R5 runs circles around a 5D
Years ago I practiced photographing seaguls with the 5D mk III, Now I have the R5 and I love the head tracking oo the local water birds. Alas no parrots yet.
I'd love to jump onto the mirrorless bandwagon. Money is not an issue, the problem is that I shoot my 600mm v3 with the 1.4xiii & 2xiii ALOT- probably 75% of the time. My 5d4 does very well with the extenders but as you stated, I don't think the R cameras would work as well. At this point in time I think I'd be taking a step backwards in performance by switching to mirrorless. Quite the dilemma.
love the review, just what I’ve been looking for. I’m looking to upgrade from the mk3, mainly for photography rather than vids. Would you recommend the R5 still? Any other brands or models you’d recommend looking at in Nov 21? Thanks so much!
Brilliant comparison Jan the only downside is that I now want to spend some money! I moved from 7dii to the 5D IV a few years ago and absolutely love the camera. However the Animal Eye autofocus looks like a real game changer for me along with the high ISO performance on the R5. Thanks for the effort you put into this video it was truly worth it. Cheers Keith
Dear Jan, thank you very much for this very interesting video, you are very nice and professional in the same time. I do not agree with you only for one question. To compare the 5DMIV with the R5 it is the right thing to do because the R5 is in the same category, the 5 series and it is not in the same category of the 1DX series, as Canin itself has declared. In the future probably we will have the R1 to compete with the 1DX series and with the Sony R9II, so to conclude very useful comparison and thank a lot for your TH-cam channel All the best to you and I will pray that the lock down will end soon so you can go out in the field to take your wonderful pictures. All the best Antonio
Thank you. I meant to say it’s in a higher year than the 5D IV but still below and R1/1Dx. Just because it has speed and megapixels something 5D series never had combined
Just subscribed. Thanks for great review. Not a bird shooter (well, maybe in the British sense), but plan on getting one early next year for sundry editorial, documentary, landscape shoots. Your video has helped me decide. Think I'll keep my 5D4, though. The 5R is an expensive bit of gear to be carrying around when on city streets!
Jan, Sorry, I know I am 2 years late, but I got here as soon as I could. Excellent Review and comparison between the R5 and 5D4, I currently shoot with the 5D4 and 1DX 1st version. I will take another look at the R5. My next question is about you opinion of the R3 and it's capability and comparison. Maybe some of your objective observations...again, I enjoy your videos. joe p blackburn
Hi Jan, I have been following your videos and was also wondering if I should spend the extra $1400 USD for an R5 vs a new 5D Mark IV. Based on your input it would be very tempting to get the Mark IV but I cannot get the animal eye AF out of my head. Also, since most of my bird photography is out in nature while touring I can't get very close to most small birds and end up cropping quite a bit. I also love trying to get pictures of flying birds. I think for this reason I should probably still stretch myself to get an R5 before I go on my next trip. Either camera would be a big upgrade since I have been using a 70D and 77D for several years now. After seeing your demonstrations I don't think I would be happy with the R6.
If I was buying a brand new camera now, I would be tempted to go for an R5. I think if you go for a Mark IV, a used ones would make more sense, because you will get it much cheaper. I think the R6 is a fantastic camera, but 20mpix is not much for cropping and using shorter lenses.
Jan thank you for these insightful videos. I am looking carefully at both the R5 and R6. I intend, at least for now, to continue to use my Canon EF 500mm F4 and 100-400mm Mark II lenses with whichever body I go for so, I'm very pleased to see you using your EF lenses in your assessments. From a financial perspective the R6 is appealing of course but I must consider the image size on either full frame, mirror-less body compared to my current 7D Mark II crop body. Thanks again.
Yes, lots of things to consider. If you are coming from a 7D Mark II and possibly crop quite often, you will definitely feel a tad more limited with the R6 when it comes to final image size.
Yes, I was just hoping there would be a way for exp simulation to stay on when I just use it as fill flash, because the flash has essentially no impact on my photo. And in certain situations the viewfinder is pretty dark/bright without exp simulation
hello after some research ive done i think im gonna get a 5d mark iv and a sigma 150-600c do you think its a good budget combo for birds ill get used . i know this is a random question i hope you reply thanks. also ill do diffirent types of photography not just birds and wildlife that i would benefit from fullframe
Great review Jan. I never got the Mark iv even if the mgp compared to the 1dx mark ii looked attractive, I decided to wait for a mirrorless to upgrade. I wonder what a comparison of the R6 vs Mark iv would give... perhaps the 20 mgp of the R6 provides great image quality with additional autofocus advantage at a price that is comparable to the Mark iv. I still miss the optical viewfinder of my 1 dxii ... perhaps it is just a matter of practice but I do find the EVF struggles in some situations... heavy fog is one of the them... but there are also others... thanks again for sharing your experience.. always great videos.
Yes, there are areas where the EVF shines and then some where it struggles. I am sure the R6 has great quality, but I don't see it being better than a Mark IV file that needs less cropping. But I have not tried it, so I can only guess. Glad you enjoyed my videos.
The biggest reason I got the R5 was for the massive video specs upgrade, which it exceeds my expectations. Even in normal 4k 8 bit is great with such high bitrates. The firmware update definitely helped with the overheating. I need to do some more side by side comparisons with the 5d though.
I used to shoot a lot of video on the Mark IV. My whole Masterclass I shot in 4k with the Mark IV, but overall the quality is a lot better on the R5 and the files are actually smaller! 3Gb for 1min of 4k HQ vs 4Gb of 1min on the Mark IV
To me the two ducks don’t look the same at all. The duck on the right looks much sharper and clearer. I felt sure from the start that it had to be the one taken with the R5.
Yeah I agree (the one on the right - R5) seems a bit better. The one on the left is still acceptable though and when zoomed out pretty similar. Still if the most expensive camera produced the least sharp result I wouldn't be happy with Canon. I think if the R5 is downsampled to the 5DIV size the IQ difference may even be larger - would be interesting to see if that is the case.
@@dimitristsagdis7340 Yes, If I down sampled it, the difference would be more obvious I'd say. Especially the details. I did notice the highlights being harder to blow on the neck with the R5
Jan Wegener Tnx - Canons always had a tendency to blow the highlights. I think it stems from their light metering systems. I’ve been with Canon for 30 years - the odd Nikon I tried over the years seemed to get more ‘accurate’ light metering and AWD. So nice to hear R5 may be breaking that tradition:-))
That's a worry that you found the 5DIV better with the 2x TC, as I never liked my 5DIV when using the 500 f/4L IS II + 2x TC combo, it was much slower than my 1DX in that regard for speed and focus accuracy which is not as good as the 1DXII. The 5DIV did a lot better when using the 1.4x TC on my 500 II. On my Sony A9 using TC's has a smaller effect than on my DSLR's as the sensor can AF down to f/16 sop f/8 combos are easily handled. I had hoped the R5 would be a big improvement over the 5DIV seeing it can AF with f/22 combos I've read. Apart from that keep up the great work, I'm always watching your videos since I stumbled across this channel a few weeks ago, very informative and I love your easy going style.
Hey, I tried to say faster, not necessarily better. In terms of sharp images the R5 had a slight edge. But I would expect a 1Dx II/III to be faster with extenders and the version II lens. Great to hear you are enjoying my videos.
@Don P I found the 5DIV overall to be very good if I stuck to the 1.4x TC on the 500 II. It may have been a bit slower than the 1DX did better in lower light. The 1DX seemed better with the 2x although the 5DIV can use all 61 pts with f/8 combos and the 1DX only uses the central point with up to 8 assist points. The 1DXII is apparently noticeably better with extenders than the 5DIV. If birds are a big part of your shooting 5DIV is more than good enough and as Jan shows it can do a amazing job. For me though I've found the ultimate hiking setup is the Nikon D500 + 500 f/5.6 PF. The Nikon 500 POF is an amazing lens, half the weight of the 500 f/4L IS II, similar IQ, much much smaller and much much cheaper and it takes a 1.4x TC very well. D500 AF is better than 1DX, 1DXII and 5DIV IMO for a fraction of the cost. And IMO the best camera of all for AF is the Sony A9/A9II. Even with the grip it's nearly 600g lighter than the 1DX and only a bit heavier than the 5DIV. I pair it with the 200-600 but also use my Canon glass a lot. Sigma MC-11 adapter works very well with Canon mk II and mk III superteles.
Jan, Really enjoying all your videos. Can you comment on using the EF 600/4 on the R5 with adaptor. How much AF performance penalty do you think there is. Basically how would AF compare with when using the 1DXmklll Thanks
Hey, I can only comment on version II, I know version III will perform better. Without extender it's pretty good, with extender it slows down a bit. I would expect a 1dX III to focus the fastest. But it doesn't have animal eye Af, so there's a trade off there
Jan Wegener thanks for the information. I am thinking about getting the R5 and like to shoot long glass, I wonder how long it will be before Canon releases a RF 400/2.8, 500/4 and 600/4
Hi Jan. Regarding the 'overheating' problem. Matt Granger recently produced a vid, where he opened the battery door on the R5 and placed a grain of rice in the lock, so the camera thought the battery was secure and started ' filming' after 15 mins he quickly removed the battery and refitted it, pressed record again and the camera continued recording. After further explanations his conclusion was that for whatever reason Canon could solve this issue with a Firmware update, maybe they will? Apparently neither the battery or camera body became hot.
Congratulation for your R5, I have a 5D Mark IV, can you please make a video explaining complete focus menu settings for 5D Mark IV , Will be appreciable
Always like your presentation skills; very clear, composed, content is succinct and to the point. Very enjoyable to watch. Find your two back button focus trick extremely helpful. Wish Canon can make the AF-on button a bit bigger so we can access it more easily and not accidentally hit the * button next to it.
The 5D4 has been your go to camera for MANY years? The model is only 4 years old. I was surprised to find that my first DSLR - the now ancient Eos 550D - came out only 10 years ago. I’ve only had it for 8 years, and it seems like ages - time really flies in photography. On the other hand cars were invented fairly recently... It all depends on your perspective.
I have the 550d too, it stopped working back in March when I was out at preserve taking pics. I had fun taking photos with that camera at home and when I traveled.
It's hard to sometimes tell the difference between a photograph taken with a 10 year old camera and a brand new camera. Especially now in 2020 with PS/LR
Hey Jan - these videos are gold 👍- still debating but your are right just cant replace megapixels - so 45 mp would be ideal vs the R6 I was going to buy. Might have to save longer and get the R5 and continue to struggle with the R in the meantime 😉
Thanks for the comparison,. I've been thinking of going with the mark iv or eos r. The r5 is out of my price range. Curious how the r6 compares to the mark iv. Since the r5 and r6 aren't that different the results are probably similar.
I would chose a 5D IV over the R probably, just too many things i don't like about it. R6 will be interesting but has less mpix. So many choices suddenly!
@@jan_wegener I enjoy taking images of wildlife, family events, traveling, etc. From what I've read the 5d is an all around workhorse of a cam that's good for various types of photography. It's odd that Canon didn't put the r6 at 30 mp instead of 20. Overall it seems like a solid camera.
@@jan_wegener I've got the R as an enthusiast, but I'm saving for the R5. I would have bought the R6 if it had more megapixels, because I like to crop and retain detail at times. For me, saving for the R5 is a serious undertaking because I don't earn money from photography. I've invested in good Canon glass, so perhaps I'll wait until prices come down a bit. Maybe late next year perhaps? Great video, and hope you get many more subs.
@@brendon3795 I hope so, too :D Yes, 30 on the R6 would've been the sweet spot IMO. Yes, atm there are so few R5 around that the price will be high for a while. It does make it easier to justify an expensive camera if it makes you money.
I have been trying out my new Canon R5 with the RF 100-500 lens for birds in flight. As much as I love it for birds that are perched (static), but for birds in flight and zoomed at 500mm, it is having difficulty locking focus don’t know if it is lag issue. I am missing out on a lot of shots. I have updated it with the latest firmware 1.1.1, I have been using drive mode as Servo AF ,case 3 also tried auto, auto focus methods I tried out are animal af, zone af and point af. It is hard to describe this, When I had been using my 7D mkII w/ 100-400 II it used to lock onto focus for BIF just like that. But with the new R5 /100-500, I am having difficulty. I just wanted to post this so can get inputs. Don’t know if I have my settings wrong. Please let me know. Thank you
I haven't tried the 100-500 yet, because of this lockdown, so I am not sure 100% how it behaves, but when I tried it with my zoom it locked on pretty fast. Are the birds possible quite far away?
Another good one Jan. Once I get my R6 I'm hoping to get an image of a red winged blackbird similar to your lorikeet one with the under wing coloring exposed.
Great vid as always! Where I live theres a lot of birds, but they get scared so easily, Im quite jealous about how close to them you can sometimes get...
Hi I have a seven years old canon Eos 500d and also telephoto lenses: EF lenses 70 to 300mm IS USM and it is also the same age. Now I am in decision. Whether to buy tamron g2 150-600mm lenses or a camera body 6d mark ii.
when it comes down to it and you can only go for 1, usually a lens will give you more reward and will stay with you longer. It will be a huge step up from 70-300
Once again a wonderful review. This is very helpful. One question though, I observed most of the shots you have taken on R5 are on high ISO...how does the camera perform in low ISO with decent light like 400-800 range.
5D Mark IV is probably the best deal financially and R6 is the most future proof camera. It depends a bit how much you wanna spend and if you think you want to migrate to mirrorless going forward
Everyone has been reviewing this Camera but yet I have it pre ordered and neither Canon or B&H will give me a answer when I will be getting my R5. $4,400 US dollars after tax and lens adapter you would think someone would say something to a person about when they think they will see their camera.
@Don P I haven't really used any of the 1Dx extensively, but I would expect AF to be faster than Mark IV. It's strange sometimes what can be repaired and what can't
Thank you- was just the review I was looking for, because I have the Mk4. BTW how do you get birds directly to your driveway? Can anyone in Australia do this? lol!
Hi Jan, thank you for this very clear video with the comparison. I now have the 5D IV but might want to switch to the R5. The eye detection seems fantastic to me and the folding screen is also an addition because I can use one body (macro), and there are a few more pluses 😊. But the use of extenders still makes me doubt. I almost always use this for bird photography, and now I understand from your video that the 5D IV handles that a lot better. The autofocus would be a lot faster, provided the light is good. Did I understand that correctly? I would love to hear how you stand on this. Thanks in advance for the effort, regards Karin PS sorry for my bad english, I am from the Netherlands😊
It's strange, the image quality is the same or better on the R5 with extender and if you are only using the R5 you don't notice the difference in speed. Only when using side by side the 5D focus seems a bit snappier with the 5D, however, the R5 does work very well with them and I have used it with both extenders successfully.
Let me put it this way. I would not go back to using my 5DIV after owning an R5. It might even rival the 1dX III in many cases. To me 45 mpix and Animal Eye AF, with fast frame rate and large buffer is a real game changer
That is my understanding because they would need to go between camera and ef ads Pater and then it can probably not communicate properly anymore. So far it has to be all EF
Hi Jan, as an enthusiast I watch a lot of the more educational you tubers (you are one of my favs as I love bird photography). Have seen a lot of general advice to turn IS off when the camera is on a tripod as it causes blurring issues. Now this be more applicable to architecture or landscape where the camera is fully static and although when you are on a gimbal the camera is moving about a lot, it’s not in the “jittery” way it would if handheld. So was curious if you have ever looked into that, as my R did not have IS no not so much of an issue. Not trying to be clever, but as I am putting together a flash rig similar to yours but with an 3legged thing Alan monopod and Docz foot and a travel gimbal from Lenscraft (check it out UK handmade really light) wondered if there was any issue with IS to take into account. Got my R6 on Monday but my EF lenses all send off for sale so can’t try it out.....my RF800mm arrives Tuesday and no sign of the 100-500mm being available for a while as well as no R5s.....Can’t wait to get shooting......! Anyway maybe it might be worth testing/checking if there is any difference if IS on or off? Cheers Ken.
@@kenmonahan9924 That's great to hear :) Yes, if you are doing long exposure, you have to turn off the IS or it will cause blurr. I never turn my IS off, when I tested it, I have been getting better results with the IS on. Especially on my gimbal things are not super stable. If I am shooting under 1/500 the IS makes a big difference.
Have sold my mark iv for the r5 but it’s not available in Australia yet. I’ve been without a camera for a month and a half or so waiting for the r5 to be in stock
Interesting to hear your thoughts of the R5 with extenders. I think my R5:s AF with my Sigma extenders works really fine. I have setup the camera to keep searching for focus even if it can't find it right away instead of not focusing at all. I have also noticed even when using my Sigma 500 f4 sports that the single point (normal focusing) is a bit slower than the tracking focus is. Have you noticed the same with your lens? But I think that the 5DIV is faster in some point and perhaps better if you have great out of focus subjects, for example you have focus on the background and a bird lands in front of you and the R5 might struggle here to find the bird, it sees passed it (same on the R6 and R and all mirrorless cameras). The reason to this is probably that the 5DIV have a dedicated AF-sensor and the mirrorless focus with it's main sensor. I would love if you could make a great test video of RAW vs CRAW! Is it any difference at all between the files in IQ? If not you can with joy use CRAW and get about 50% more images taken as the file size are about 40-50% smaller :)
I have seen a few CRAW files and they looked fine. I think for most cases they're good enough. I would assume that only in extreme cases the full RAW will hold a bit more detail etc. Yes, the AF on mirrorless has a big weakness and that is that when it gets stuck on the background you have to manually defocus and help it to get back onto the subject. Can be a bit annoying at times
@@jan_wegener Thanks for the answer :) I agree. I use Craw most of the time just to save space and be able to get a lot more images taken as the IQ seems to be identical. I also believe that the RAW might hold an edge if you miss you exposure a lot than it might be a little better. Yes, the DSLR with it's separate AF-sensor are better in this area. But I have come around it quite good by letting my lens focus even if it not possible and to focus on a bigger target with more contrast in front of the camera (closer) and that work fine I think, than I can achieve focus fast on the bird. It also can be a bit tricky I think to get focus in heavy snowfall as the snowfall make it harder to see contrast of the subject. But a DSLR might struggle her as well. Be interesting to see if Canon will make the AF even better with firmware update.
I am confused with 5d mark iv and eos r for still photography.I like 5d mark iv images .can you do a comparison of both these cameras and give any suggestions?
They have only been shipping last week I think, but most things are fairly similar. Main difference being the missing top display, sensor & lower resolution EVF
Quality video Jan 👍🏼 What do you think about the colors produced by the R5 vs the 5DIV? Do you edit in Lightroom and use the Adobe Color profile? Curious what you think about the AWB as well
Thanks! Editing has been really painful. The best results come from DPP, no doubt. I bought some ACR/LR profiles that are closer that help me if I want to use ACR. The native Adobe profiles are horrendous with terrible colours, so they have been unusable. So it's been kinda difficult to compare colours. But the R5 does well and looks nice when you find the right software to use
Jan Wegener I can relate to you in regards to getting the best results in DPP. I've had my R5 for a month and found the biggest frustration with getting the Canon colors in LR. I bought Color Fidelity profiles too (I assume that's what you acquired). They work well in some situations, not so good in others. Sunset color gradiants are spot on with Canons profile, CF & Adobe profiles don't compare. After dealing with the frustration with thinking about workflow changes to facilitate Canon colors in DPP + LR editing, I've decided just to accept Adobe's Color profile for most shots. For a decent amount of subject matter without big, vibrant color gradiants, I actually prefer it to CF profiles. For certain shots I'll accept using DPP & exporting TIFFs to LR / PS. Hopefully Adobe will build quality R5 camera profiles eventually, who knows lol. I used a 5D III for years, that camera had phenomenal color even with Adobe profiles. I wonder why, AWB & the sensor I guess. The R5 is fantastic in many other ways, I'll get used to it!
@@rocknrory It seems Adobe just got lazy and stopped caring when it comes to the profiles. Yes, I got the CF, which works fine on some and not on others as you say. For my birds, Adobe Profiles are unusable
Jan Wegener have you ever tried making your own profiles with a color checker? When I get back home to mine in a few weeks, I'm going to give it a go. Hopefully the results are good!
Jan, Can you speak to the EV spool up delay on the 5R? How are you dealing with that when needing to quickly spontaneously grab that special bird shot?
Comes down to anticipation I suppose. Half tip the shutter while lifting it up to your eye and it should be on by the time you look through the viewfinder. If sometimes happens completely unexpectedly, you might get caught out, have not find a perfect solution for that. Because of this issue, I have actually extended the power savings shut off times, because i did not wanna be caught out, but now it eats more battery
Tnx for sharing your valuable experiences. Around min 23 you say (in good light) with extenders the R5 AF feels more sluggish compared to the 5DIV but they both produce similar number of pictures in focus. How do you square that? Cause earlier on the video you say that for moving subject/BIF the R5 has a much higher keeper rate. Does this change when you add the extenders? Some of your statements appear to clash. Pls elaborate cause I'm thinking of spending the more money to have better AF with extenders (I use both 1.4x and 2x). Tnx in advance.
Hi, I found it interesting, too. What I was referring to, was basically the time to acquire focus which felt faster with the Mark IV. But when locked they both did well and the R5 did slightly better in terms of sharp images. For flight photography the R5 just did way better in every way than my Mark IV. On the blank 600 the R5 did really well, too. It just slowed down a bit, but that did not affect accuracy just speed to acquire focus if that makes sense. I was using a shorter lens without extenders for that.
@@jan_wegener I am not familiar with the 5D mk iv, and specifically the focus options. What I was wondering is if you turned of animal tracking on the R5, when using the extenders, is this a fairer comparison to the 5d Mk iv?
Jan Wegener Tnx - I’m particularly interested in using the 300 f/2.8 with 1.4 and 2x and the 100-400 with the 1.4x on the R5 for moving animals (not necessarily BIF) si if you get your hands on any of these I would be very interested to hear your experiences with AF.
Hi I have a problem with the 5d mark iv. In normal shooting mode, is there no setting to lengthen the metering time of the exposure meter? In the menu there is only the option: timer metering from 4 seconds to 30 minutes, but only for shooting in live view .... Is it possible to solve the problem in normal shooting? Can you leave the meter on without having to press the shutter button every time?
@@jan_wegener Because I come from Nikon camera bodies and I have to get used to the commands, among other things when the exposure meter is deactivated in the viewfinder, all the shooting data also go away, which did not happen on Nikon ... You can confirm that there is no setting to 5d mark iv to increase the exposure reading time? Thank you very much for helping
@@jan_wegener I have contacted canon customer service. They also confirmed to me that the exposure metering lasts 4 seconds in shooting mode, while it can last up to 30 minutes in live view mode. They have sent my suggestion to the high offices to implement this addition in a future firmware, however I doubt they will take me seriously .... Anyway I have tried, and I have removed the doubt.
You're not just a reviewer
You're also a very good teacher..!
thanks :)
Thanks mate,
yes, with the SD card, the camera is no fun to use at all!
Glad you enjoyed the videos :)
@@rogerbarnett8412 I still have a 16MB (!!) SD card here lol
Thanks for such an informative video🙏. I'm glad the 5D4 is still being talked about by the pros like yourself. Financially, my only option for now is the 5D4. I haven't mastered it yet so I'm not in a fired up hurry to jump to a more expensive camera anyways. I'll learn what I can from the 5D4 and then maybe think about spending thousands to move into the mirrorless world.
5D IV is a great camera, which has a few limitations, especially, frame rate, AF and buffer size.
It has done a great job for me for years, so I am sure you will have a lot of fun with it
I am blown away that you get such beautiful birds in your back yard!
Me too! hehe
You're the man Jan!! I wish your channel prosperity
I appreciate that! Thanks
What?? You’re from Melbourne??That’s awesome to have a local TH-cam star! Great work Jan.
Don't know about star, but I am glad you are enjoying my work :)
Thank you very much Jan for the great review. Here are my observations re the subject:
Thank you again for the great video.
a. The AF of the new R5/6 is pretty amazing
b. If you use the right amount of DOF, focusing on the head will still give you all details in the plumage
c. The R6 has similar Af performance to the R5
d. This will depend on the build of the extenders. The latest EF extenders could not be stacked without a few tricks. Yes, it seems like there might be an R7 at some point
f. I can see that point during the night, but not really at low power settings during the day.
Gorgeous backyard photos my friend! 👌👌👌
Thanks Jan!
It does have a bit of a mind of its own
Great video mate!! Hopefully the thing get better in Melbourne soon!
Thank you!
I had a lovely email today telling me my R5 has been dispatched today from Canon Europe and will be with me next Tuesday ...4 more sleeps and it will be here yay!...
awesome and exciting, I hope you will enjoy it !
Another excellent video. Thanks for using your quarantine time productively and to help others. Cheers!
Thank you!
@@alopeztorres interesting! But as you say, that won't help in a real life shooting scenario
@@brucewarren9563 Thanks for the input Bruce. Yes I noticed the 8s. Didn't know you can change it to 4s. I wish it was 1s or to be disabled! :)
Fantastic comparison mate, the high iso is insane. I am super jealous and look forward to what you can achieve once you can get out. Cheers, Duade
Thanks mate. It starts to look more like if than when :(
Another great video!
I have not found any video that shows me how to keep the exposure simulation on with the Canon flash active. Can you show me Tim?
Hi Dave,
yes there's a bit of a delay in shipping for whatever reason. I am still keeping my "old" 5D for some other work that I do, too.
I think the Flash thing is an inconvenience I haven't found a solution for yet. It does seem to not do that with off-brand flashes interestingly enough.
I love this guy. He seems so nice 😄
who, me? :D
He is the best! And a great teacher
Excellent video Jan!!
Michele Kutner thanks!
Your BIF experience with the 5D4 is similar to my 7D2 experience.
It felt better to know that someone else had experienced the same.
I don't think anyone has a good BIF experience with either of these!
I recently got a tip that I should try using eye detection for BIF.
My test plan collapsed since the Puffins left the nest holes earlier than expected. I'm told that it was a bumper year for them with an abundance of food.
tarjei99 eye detection for BIF works amazingly well
I know. This concerns eye detection on older cameras.
I was quite eager to see if it works. Actually, I still am.
Such a balanced and informative video. I like the comparisons betwn the two cameras. I like the setup in your backyard, what fun. You covered so many unbiased and experienced bases here.
thanks Todd :)
Great video! What material are you using for your blind?
one if the things you could have covered with the extenders is in the mark IV is that it only has auto focus with the 2x extender in live view mode when at f11.
Never knew they had such nice colours under their wings.
yes, pretty awesome!
Thanks a lots what do you think is DSLR and 5D mark lV EF L lenses could be professional for commercial photographers next 10 years?
SLICK!!!!! awesome vlog buddy, just what i needed! your vids are firing me up in these troubled times! I cant wait to get mine....oh nice knife skills too lol 😂
thanks mate!
Great video and usual, Jan. Filled with lots of useful information about both bird photography and also technical aspects of the R5 and 5D. I currently own the EOS R and would like to get the R5 since I want to move my system over to mirrorless. I look forward to your next video!
thanks James :)
THE comparison I've been looking for. Thanks.
awesome! I hope it helped
Great video Jan. I have just bought the R5 and appreciate your thoughts on it's finer points
Enjoy it!
Excellent excellent review and many different practical scenarios... thank you!! I just bought a R5 and I am pretty sure my 5D Mark IV will start gathering dust unless I sell it off altogether.
I haven't touched mine except for some video work hehe
Very good information, in addition to beautiful bird photos.
Thanks Pam!
Excellent presentation. Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it!
It makes sense for these new iterations of this series of camera to be higher spec'd and makes you wonder what the R1 will be able to do once released!
agree with you! Certainly interesting times for us
Great video as always, I have the 100-400 mk1 lens and was wondering if I should break the bank and get a newer mk2. OR new thinking - get the R5 with an adapter, save for another year & potentially get the 100 - 500. Thoughts? Thanks in advance Russ😊
Oooops, sorry, I currently have a 5D MK4
Mirrorless is definitely the future so I would want to invest in that.
In saying that the upgrade in the 100-400 would also be a big step, but the R5 runs circles around a 5D
@Jan Wegener
Thank you Jan, how much I chuck at my kind of photography is always contentious, but I am compelled to move in the right direction.
Years ago I practiced photographing seaguls with the 5D mk III, Now I have the R5 and I love the head tracking oo the local water birds. Alas no parrots yet.
That sheet you painted is awesome. What kind of paint did you use and what colors please?
Just the cheapest ones from the home depot shop. I used Red, Green and Yellow
Loved the review ❤️. What do u think about sharpness ? Which did better ?
quite similar, but the R5 having better fine detail and dynamic range
I'd love to jump onto the mirrorless bandwagon. Money is not an issue, the problem is that I shoot my 600mm v3 with the 1.4xiii & 2xiii ALOT- probably 75% of the time. My 5d4 does very well with the extenders but as you stated, I don't think the R cameras would work as well.
At this point in time I think I'd be taking a step backwards in performance by switching to mirrorless. Quite the dilemma.
The R5 does a very good job with the extenders on my version II 600mm lens. I would never consider going back. The advances in AF are dramatic
love the review, just what I’ve been looking for. I’m looking to upgrade from the mk3, mainly for photography rather than vids. Would you recommend the R5 still? Any other brands or models you’d recommend looking at in Nov 21? Thanks so much!
I have 2 R5 s atm and think they 're very good and I will stick with them for the foreseeable future.
Excellent, as usual.
Thank you! Cheers!
Great informative video. Thanks Jan👍
thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it Keith. It's a great camera, but so is the Mark IV.
In the future probably we will have the R1 to compete with the 1DX series and with the Sony R9II, so to conclude very useful comparison and thank a lot for your TH-cam channel
All the best to you and I will pray that the lock down will end soon so you can go out in the field to take your wonderful pictures.
All the best
Antonio
Thank you. I meant to say it’s in a higher year than the 5D IV but still below and R1/1Dx. Just because it has speed and megapixels something 5D series never had combined
Thank you for your reply 😊
Thanks for going to 12,800. Been wanting to see that.
I was surprised how well it did
Just subscribed.
Thank you :) I am still using my 5D IV as well, it's still a great camera
Jan, Sorry, I know I am 2 years late, but I got here as soon as I could. Excellent Review and comparison between the R5 and 5D4, I currently shoot with the 5D4 and 1DX 1st version. I will take another look at the R5. My next question is about you opinion of the R3 and it's capability and comparison. Maybe some of your objective observations...again, I enjoy your videos. joe p blackburn
I haven't used one yet, but maybe at the end of March
Excellent comparison, thank you.
Thanks :)
Thanks Jan very useful video...
Thank you!
Why isn't a 90D on your radar? It absolutely destroys the 80D let alone a 70D.
I have my AF mostly in eye detect, but I also have my SET button customised to bring the AF to the centre of frame in one button :)
Yes, eye detect works well in many cases. That's good, too!
great comparison video , loving my R5
thanks mate, me too!
Hey Jan, with a flash normally you have to turn the exposure simulation off on a mirrorless camera
Glad you enjoyed my videos.
thanks jan great video as always.
thank you :)
Love this video! You're a master! Thank you!
thank you :)
What is consider a reasonable price for 5D4 in 2023?
I wouldn't want to spend much money on one at all. The AF is just so far behind the mirrorless cameras
3Gb for 1min of 4k HQ vs 4Gb of 1min on the Mark IV
why?R5 is not available now?
@@dineshrai6410 only Canon knows
To me the two ducks don’t look the same at all. The duck on the right looks much sharper and clearer. I felt sure from the start that it had to be the one taken with the R5.
You got good eyes!
@@jan_wegener I do and always did. (Even though I need stronger and stronger reading glasses).
Thanks for this excellent video
Glad you liked it!
Hallo Jan, great job and good explainations! I have never seen such birds in my garden here in germany 👍
dafuer hast du andere nette Voegel die es hier nicht gibt :D
Hey,
I tried to say faster, not necessarily better.
Hey,
I can only comment on version II, I know version III will perform better. Without extender it's pretty good, with extender it slows down a bit. I would expect a 1dX III to focus the fastest. But it doesn't have animal eye Af, so there's a trade off there
Jan Wegener thanks for the information. I am thinking about getting the R5 and like to shoot long glass, I wonder how long it will be before Canon releases a RF 400/2.8, 500/4 and 600/4
Steven Kornreich it doesn’t feel like they’re on any rush to do so
Nice honest information, how about the dynamic range?
Slightly better on the R5. The highlights on the Duck for instance were much easier recovered on the R5 and less blown.
Apparently neither the battery or camera body became hot.
yes, possible. My camera became warm after those 2 hrs. I don't think with the new update that the overheating would affect my shooting style much

I had fun taking photos with that camera at home and when I traveled.
for a digital camera 4 years is a long time :D
It's hard to sometimes tell the difference between a photograph taken with a 10 year old camera and a brand new camera. Especially now in 2020 with PS/LR
@@KevinNordstrom yes, in a small size most images will look the same
Hey Jan - these videos are gold 👍- still debating but your are right just cant replace megapixels - so 45 mp would be ideal vs the R6 I was going to buy. Might have to save longer and get the R5 and continue to struggle with the R in the meantime 😉
It's a tough one, but such high quality mpix are a big draw for me personally at least
Once I get my R6 I'm hoping to get an image of a red winged blackbird similar to your lorikeet one with the under wing coloring exposed.

it is also the same age.
It does even better of course :)
Bro 5d mark iv and canon r6 and EOS R and which one is best for wedding photography and long term use

Here's how I did it in my place
Hi Jan, thank you for this very clear video with the comparison. I now have the 5D IV but might want to switch to the R5. The eye detection seems fantastic to me and the folding screen is also an addition because I can use one body (macro), and there are a few more pluses 😊. But the use of extenders still makes me doubt. I almost always use this for bird photography, and now I understand from your video that the 5D IV handles that a lot better. The autofocus would be a lot faster, provided the light is good. Did I understand that correctly? I would love to hear how you stand on this. Thanks in advance for the effort, regards Karin
PS sorry for my bad english, I am from the Netherlands😊
It's strange, the image quality is the same or better on the R5 with extender and if you are only using the R5 you don't notice the difference in speed. Only when using side by side the 5D focus seems a bit snappier with the 5D, however, the R5 does work very well with them and I have used it with both extenders successfully.
@@jan_wegener Thank you for your answer Jan, I really appreciate that! This was the last push to make the switch. I can't wait to get started :-)
Greetings,
Which do you think is a better second camera for a 1 DX MK III for bird photography, the 5D Mk IV or the R5 ?, and why? Thanks
Let me put it this way. I would not go back to using my 5DIV after owning an R5. It might even rival the 1dX III in many cases. To me 45 mpix and Animal Eye AF, with fast frame rate and large buffer is a real game changer

So you can't use the RF extenders with EF lenses, is that correct?
That is my understanding because they would need to go between camera and ef ads Pater and then it can probably not communicate properly anymore. So far it has to be all EF
Jan, great vid, assume IS off on both lens and body when using flash?
I never turn my IS off. Am I missing something? I am using it as fill flash, not main light.
Jan Wegener @jan thanks Jan that gets that nagging doubt out of my head!
Have sold my mark iv for the r5 but it’s not available in Australia yet. I’ve been without a camera for a month and a half or so waiting for the r5 to be in stock
That's annoying! Australia only got about 170 cameras initially, so I got lucky. I hope yours comes soon
thank you great video
Glad you enjoyed it
hi Jan, were the extenders the old EF ones? if so, can you still use them with the R5 along with the R-EF adapter, does this slow it down?
They were the EF version III. Can't use any other with EF lenses.
I would assume that these indeed slow the AF a lot.
@@Smauges Yes, focus on something closer with high contrast is key to always get good focus and fast
How well do the EF lenses work on the R5?
Very well, unless it’s really old lenses. There’s some limitations then
I am confused with 5d mark iv and eos r for still photography.I like 5d mark iv images .can you do a comparison of both these cameras and give any suggestions?
Unless you are wanting to go all mirrorless, I would probably prefer a 5D Mark IV
Jan Wegener Thank you 👍

Nitrotigerz I haven’t. Not sure how to do it, but sounds interesting
5d mark 4 for me thank you
Tnx for sharing your valuable experiences.
Hi,
I found it interesting, too.
