love the review, just what I’ve been looking for. I’m looking to upgrade from the mk3, mainly for photography rather than vids. Would you recommend the R5 still? Any other brands or models you’d recommend looking at in Nov 21? Thanks so much!
I went from the 5D Mk4 to the EOS R and now the EOS R5. Definitely an interesting transition and I plan to make a TH-cam video to describe it in depth. I feel it's important for people to know that they don't *"need"* to get new RF lenses if they upgrade to mirrorless. The *EF to RF lens adapter* allows you to use your EF lenses on the mirrorless bodies perfectly. The only RF lens I bought was the RF 35mm and that's because I didn't already have a 35mm lens. But my EF lenses work great on the new mirrorless bodies so there's really no rush to upgrade lenses. I'd suggest the *"control ring adapter"* because it gives you the control ring features that are built into RF lenses even though you're shooting with 'old' EF lenses. I'll definitely upgrade to all RF lenses (starting next year) but anyone wanting to go Canon mirrorless can jump right in without worrying about the cost of new lenses.
EF to RF check before u buy, they`ve got front focus and fck me if i`m wrong. I`ll be commenting these videos until canon don`t come and fix the issue. 4,2K pounds for eos R5 isn`t worth it if u have only EF L lenses....
Had 30 minutes shooting with the R6 at a launch event in germany yesterday evening. Autofocus is now speedwise AT LEAST on par with Sony- extremely fast even when i zoomed really fast in and out shooting 20fps silently with the RF 70-200 in really crappy light indoors. Head Detection works even with masks on and Eye detect was blazing fast and accurate. Stabilization is crazy- i am really shaky and even i Managed to handhold 1 FULL SECOND with the New 85 F2. A colleague of mine claimed even he could handhold 4 SECONDS... the 600 and 800 Teles are laughably light and Image Quality is decent. Canon claims officially that the sensor of the R6 is not the exact same but comparable to the one in the 8300€ 1DX3 in terms of ISO performance, dynamic Range and AF capability. And after what i saw i totally believe that. Rolling shutter (in 4k as well as in 8k ipb) and IS in both cams were much better than in my Sony @7 mk 3. And even though we had only fast SD cards for testing the buffer cleared in 2-3 seconds even after 30-40 pic bursts. So for me ist bye bye sony and welcome my New R6...

@@andis9030 You can and I will for probably a few years. That noted, the new RF lenses seem to be both sharper and faster to acquire focus when used with the existing R body. You make a very convincing argument to invest in the R. I'm looking forward to seeing how the older cameras change in price over the next few months. Thanks for the comparison!
when you mentioned about switching from something like Sony to Canon... Well, if there's something that really annoys you, I say make the switch. I loved my EOS R but I had a ton of gear stolen including the camera. So I had important shoots to do so my friend lent me his Sony A7R3 and a few lenses. And when I started using it, I loved the resolution! However, the more I used the camera, the more I disliked it. And the biggest thing I had against it was the buffering. I had never disliked buffering in a camera as much as the A7R3. If you only take 1 pic there and 1 pic here, you won't run into the buffering issue. But it's just so insane how when you hit the buffer limit on this camera, you literally can't do nothing with the camera. You can't switch settings, you can't go into the menus, you can't do anything. You just have to wait for the number to count down. I hear the people that say you don't need to shoot volumes. But I'm not great at bringing out the amazing poses from people and I depend on the organic creation of amazing poses. And some poses don't look amazing until you see the end product. Anyway, an annoyance like buffering can definitely get me to switch from a well-regarded camera.
Doesn’t the R have Eye AF? If so, it’s a major reason for a portrait photographer to look at the R over the 5D4. It’s the feature hat convinced me to switch from Canon to Sony.
As a video power user, i’m hoping the dynamic range of the R5 is above 14 stops. I’ve been enjoying the 14.7 stops on the a7r iii and don’t want to downgrade the DR significantly. EOS R is 13.5 so 14 stops isn’t too high of hopes
I have the 5D Mark IV, 5DS, and EOS-R. The EOS-R works just fine with my 9 EF L lenses; doesn't focus "as fast" as my two RF lenses (35mm and 24-105), but close enough for me. I am selling my 5DS on eBay to help fund the R5 I will get AND then convert my EOS-R to IR. I will keep my 5D Mark IV for now "just in case" I have a problem with my R5. Yes, folks, I AM a gear nerd!
Just bought a 5d iv...because the new specs do not convince me in any way except movies. But I shoot stills and am happy to buy a 5d iv for half the price of a R5...some people have senses and don't follow every Marketing Hype. Battery life, all my EF lenses....NO GO for me to change
People are suggesting R6 over Mark IV. But they never concider the price difference. Where I live, one is able to get Mark IV for 1200€ and R6 is 2900€. Is it justified to pay so much extra for ''better'' landscape photography? Makes me think that extra money is better spent on a lens.
Hello :) I have a question about Canon 5d mark 3 and 4. I see you have used 5d mark 4 before you went over to Canon R5 and R6. I have found that i really like the colours the 5d mark 3 gives me, but the version 4 of 5d mark I dont like the colours the camera gives me even if I have the same settings used for mark 3. Have you experienced the same with the colours of 5d mark 4 that I have with the colours and flat images? I wonder if i should sell 5d mark 4 and go over to R6 or R5 just because I want better colours like Canon 5d mark 3, but I want autofouc to be better like the new versions have
Thank you for such a down-to-earth reasoning for which camera to buy! I’ve been wanting to jump into mirrorless for a couple years now and was wondering whether to go for the Eos R or R5, and I appreciate your comment about getting the R since it’s much cheaper now, and pairing it with good lenses. I can always get the R5 in another year or so, when the price goes down on that. Thank you for helping me make an educated decision that’ll work best for me!
What you say makes sense besed on the specs. But i bought the “R” sometime back and hated the user interface. I have come to LOVE the flip out screens. But i would rather go with a 5D mark iv if i had to choose between just those two. I have a 6D and apsc 77D and only do stills photography. I’m inclined to go with another brand than to pay all these premiums for video specs and performance i don’t care about. I hope you are do have a crystal ball and those models DO come down drastically. That be cool!
What up! Frank here, question. with the R we have a mode button that gives us an awesome screen for video. These option are, A+, Program AE, Tv, Av, M, C1, C2, and C3. C3 is linked to the Record button when in photo mode. This is valuable to me with the R. The RP does not have a mode button, it has a dial. When the Dial is in video mode I only get movie auto exposure, Manual, and HDR without being able to program anything to the record button when in photo mode. Do the RP and R6 have that in common? Or does the R6 share the same video options as the R. Cheers from LA Nuclearfrank!!!
I’m sticking with 5D IV. I don’t shoot video so I see no reason to upgrade. As a matter of fact I just sold my EOS R and RF 50mm 1.2 and kept the EOS RP + RF 35mm as backup to the 5D IV
Hi!!! I was curious if the glass and quality of the RF 24-105 f/4.0 is better quality than the same EF lens? Found an EOS R with above kit lens at a good price. Thanks for keeping it real!
Hi ! I use a 6Dmk1 and EF35L f1.4 + EF135L f2. The 135 is my favorite lense of all time, i absolutely love the "magic" and bokeh of it. Is it worth changing to a R6 with EF adapter ? A lot of new things are really interesting but the 20mpx resolution makes me hesitate
Very nice video! I am in the category: Put upgrading from 6D - 6Dmk2 to a professional body on hold when the EOS R came out. Interesting options you mentioned.
Thank you for these information . But is there any news about when Canon will release the Canon 5D Mark V camera? Because I want to upgrade my current EOS 7D camera to EOS 5D Mark V.
i need your advice in buying cameras we were looking to upgrade from mid range camera to full frame with in the budget for studio, wedding and other short videos... even though we use shoot both photos and video mostly , a little higher preference for quality photos. one of our senior suggested us to go for mirrorless in canon or sony both for video and photo shoot.. when i compared the difference inbetween 5D mark -iv, eos R and eos R5... mainly i observed that the number of focus points varies from camera to camera... where eos R have 5655 focus points 5D mark -vi have 61 focus points and eos R5 have 1053 focus points I dont know how far having more focus points plays key role irrespective of having eos R having 15 mega pixel lesser than eos R5 After watching your video is it right to got for eos R rather than going to eos R5 or eos R6 or need to look at Sony a7R IV pls give us your valuable opinion which can help us ...
Hey Pye! So now that the R5 is basically out, how do you feel? I have the MK IV and L glass, but I love shooting mirrorless in natural light. Would love your opinion, get an R (same MP basically as MK4) or up grade to the R5 and all it's issues? Upgrade and sell the L series lenses and get RF glass or just use the adapter? TIA
Hi! Love your videos. I shoot with two cameras. They happen to be the cameras in this video: R, 5d iv. So, my question is not should I purchase the R5/R6, but instead, which camera should I replace with the R5? Should I replace the 5d iv with the R5 or should I replace the R with the R5? More info: I shoot people. Mainly families and events - rallies, protests, conferences, location etc. I also love venue and night photography. I don't make money shooting landscapes or wildlife or products or fashion. I hardly shoot any video at all. I bought the R specifically for the 85 and to replace the 6d ii with the EF 16-35 iii because of the flip-out screen. All my other glass is EF and I don't feel the need to replace the 70-200 or the 16-35 with R glass. I may want to replace the EF 24-70 with the RF 28-70. The EF 50 works amazingly adapted on the R. The R does a good job of replacing the 6d ii in many situations, and I love that the sensor is the same as the 5d iv in editing, but the EF 70-200 just works and feels better on the 5d iv. The optical AF is just faster and I hate the "always-on" IS when the 70-200 is adapted to the R. It just feels wrong. So, I guess if the R5 AF is better than the 5d then I should keep the R and give up the 5d -- but I'm worried it just won't work as well with the EF 70-200 I already have. I'm also worried that that new RF 70-200 is not as durable. That said, the 85 has replaced the 70-200 50% of the time b/c it's just sharper, especially when I don't have to raise the ISO in the evening, and I greatly look forward to an RF 135 or a long f/2 zoom -- and if that happens, the 5d won't be as useful. Any advice / other thoughts? I'm going to miss the 5d iv if it's the one to go. I'm used to that digital viewfinder now, but I still like seeing through the lens.
This was helpful thanks. I have the Rebel T4i so anything will be an upgrade. I was thinking 5DMarkIV but I thought now is the best time to move to mirrorless and the EOS-R is interesting. I also considered the R6 but I can't justify the CAD$1,000 price difference. It does 30fps faster 4k video and apparently sharper image even though 10MP smaller
I’m looking to upgrade from my Mark II, but it seems most of these new cameras try to sell you on their video features. I take photos, not video. So would waiting for the R5 be a waste of $$$ or should I look at a different body.
EF glass owner with EOS R, will probably selling EOS R just because price will still be good at R5 release but RF glass (minus the Samyang) is too expensive at the moment. On that side, maybe wait for Sigma RF lenses coming out.
Very helpful video. Thank you! I am a self taught portrait photographer (occasional weddings & events) and I shoot with a 80D, for 2 years now. I am so ready for a full frame camera with higher resolution. I was contemplating moving over to Sony but now I am definitely considering staying with Canon after watching this video. Thank you!
Thank you. This was really helpful to me. I already own the EOS R and RF glass trinity and non L primes, but I want that IBIS and animal autofocus. I’m thinking quite a while now if I should go with R5 or R6. Has to be the R5 then.
Extremely helpful information w/o tons of spec comparisons. Just kinda like sitting at a card game and talking about camera gear...just honest opinion. Love it!! Thank you!
Great video! The 8k is ridiculous (don’t forget about those 512gb cfexpress cards costing near $1k each!). I’m actually watching the price of the EOS R to pick up around $1500 (especially if the R6 is really only 20mp) , and I’ll keep using my 80D with all my EF glass (which I love and mostly use for indoor hockey photography). With the great 30mp sensor and updated AF on the R (plus, still have some good video capabilities), I think that will be my entry point to the RF system, and slowly transition my glass over the next 10 years (I’m in no rush) :-)
I’ll take my 5D4 all day. When it breaks, I’ll buy another one! Only people that buy mirrorless cameras are the ones that have to be seen with the latest and most expensive camera just like people who have to have the newest iPhone every year. Long live the DSLR!! Keep it simple.
i came to hear why i need to buy the R5 but honestly it is not enough reason for me. i promised my self that I will not be fooled again by the fake hype of you tubers, I have the 5dmk iv for quite some time and i love but everyone was talking mirrorless camera agenda and how the Panasonic Lumix sh1 is monster of camera e.g full sensor 4k video and it had all the bells and whistles. i must say while the videotaping technologies is a leap over cannon but that's was all; canon was ahead in every other aspects . i still have to use my canon 5dmk iv for everything else and i am $4k hard working unhappy with my sh1 and it is even noise than my canon 5dmk iv .. i am not making this financial error again the specs are so incremental and the 8k video is welcome but to exaggerated for most people still have 2k and 4k T.V. in there homes
So I'm more of a hobbyist, with sport, travel photography and the occasional side gig using a 7D Mrk ii. Been looking to go full frame but would like to reduce the weight of my gear and keep printing my work. Would the R6 be a better buy than the R5 in my case?
SLR Lounge | Photography Tutorials ah ok ok, ugh apart of me wants to just get that RP and build from there. I want to do specialize in our door portraits and eventually assist in weddings and then lead in doing weddings.
I am NOT upgrading from a 30MP camera to a 45MP camera at the cost of an EOS R5. Period. Canon's going to have to get its 75MP version or even its rumored 150MP studio version out to make me even consider upgrading. R5 is the jack of all trades master of VIDEO camera. It's going to slay the others on video. 45MP these days isn't “massive.” The optics of RF may make it outperform the other 45MP cameras in its class, but with Sony already with the A7R IV, the R5 is honestly a letdown on the resolution side of it. The reason it's 45 is because at 8K it won't have to downsample the sensor which makes 8K no crop full AF possible for the CPU. That's why it's 45MP, and I'm not here for that because I am not a huge video person. An R is MORE than enough for any video needs I have. ALSO, if I had 20k burning a hole, I would switch from Flashpoint to Profoto… 🤣 Are YOU crazy!? 🤣
As a long time Canon user, and owner of Eos R, I don' t see how a non professional photographer (not a videographer) could justify the expenses for the transition from R to R5. As for R vs MkIV, ergonomics and controls are the only reasons you would prefer the MkIV over the R
you have highlighted some important points. the importance of RF lenses in terms of the resolution of the new sensors and the transition to the new system must be considered in a rational way for the business. That makes sense.
I’m sorry, but I didn’t see the point of this video. Gosh...The R5 hasn’t even come out yet! We can’t even put them side by side. And the EOS R, which I have, is an AMAZING camera. RF glass, while not in front of a 50 megapixel camera, is amazing on the EOS R. The EOS RP isn’t too far behind, either.

Most of the upgrades of the R5-R6 cameras are in the video field, but with crazy overheating !!! ... The rest is no longer important ,,, not worth upgrading or buying a camera for crazy overheated video.

The specs have largely been confirmed by Canon. I don't think we actual know the resolution, that's just what is demanded by 8K video.

If you think the R3 buffers, try the R2. THAT camera buuuuuuuuuuffers
Doesn’t the R have Eye AF? If so, it’s a major reason for a portrait photographer to look at the R over the 5D4. It’s the feature hat convinced me to switch from Canon to Sony.
it does have and AF no EOS R is amazing for me personally.
Can I buy your 5D IV now?
I am upgrading from the 6DMK2 to the Eos R5. The 6DMK2 really started to limjt me with Dynamic Range and the focus points drive me insane.
This is exactly my case. Did you upgrade? How has it been?
Just bought a 5d iv...because the new specs do not convince me in any way except movies. But I shoot stills and am happy to buy a 5d iv for half the price of a R5...some people have senses and don't follow every Marketing Hype. Battery life, all my EF lenses....NO GO for me to change
i just bought a 5D4 from best buy, ill go mirrorless when they have R5 Mark 3 which it will be a LOOONG TIME for now ill enjoy my new 5d4
05:26 - 4K RAW, nobody has yet confirmed that. Only for the 8K... Do you have the information we may be missing? :)
If I'm using my 24-70 F2.8L II and 70-200 F2.8L III on a EOS RP should I save for an R6 or get a used 5D4 or R?
You are completely missing on a lot of benefits. Eye AF alone makes the iv feel like a dinosaur, unless all you do is kandscapes
shaolin95 I love eye AF and I use it all the time on my RP. Having said that, I get a similar performance when I shoot the 5D IV in live view mode.
I was going to maybe go to the R6 from the R only because of the speed. 12FPS is for me. But, I love my EOSR. I want the 85 1.2
I strictly do photos. Only weddings and couples. I have a IV but wanna go mirrorless. Should I go R6 or R5. I could care less about video specs.
R6 because it shoots more frames per second and it has higher iso at very low noise! R6 for sports and weddings!
I watched it more than a couple of times, such a great video...appreciated Mr. Pye
Really appreciate the advice to each of the different groups of potential buyers. Great insights. Thanks so much for posting.
Thanks for watching!
Hi!!! I was curious if the glass and quality of the RF 24-105 f/4.0 is better quality than the same EF lens? Found an EOS R with above kit lens at a good price. Thanks for keeping it real!
If you want to change the body, go ahead, but keep your EF 24-105. There's little to no difference in quality.
But what if... I have a 5D MkIII which is written off in february 2021 and a 5DMkIV with only EF glass. And no money... What should I do? ;-)
I own a 5D mk iv ..and my 2e camera will be the r5 . I sold my 80D . Now im waiting for the r5
Did you do a video when you did the shoot with the Moto Guzzi motor bike, looked awesome
I'm looking to upgrade from my T8i and I'm split between the 5DM4 and R...I have all EF Glass (L & Sigma Art)...any suggestions
VERY helpful video Thank you!!
Very nice video! I am in the category: Put upgrading from 6D - 6Dmk2 to a professional body on hold when the EOS R came out. Interesting options you mentioned.
I´m exactly in the same situation. 6dMk2 and searching for a first body :).
Thank you for these information .
But is there any news about when Canon will release the Canon 5D Mark V camera?
Because I want to upgrade my current EOS 7D camera to EOS 5D Mark V.
Good advice! I already took your advice and the EOS R is on the way.
I have money for neither, yet I’m still watching this. Love the video tho, some good points!
i need your advice in buying cameras
we were looking to upgrade from mid range camera to full frame with in the budget for studio, wedding and other short videos...
even though we use shoot both photos and video mostly ,
a little higher preference for quality photos.
one of our senior suggested us to go for mirrorless in canon or sony both for video and photo shoot..
when i compared the difference inbetween 5D mark -iv, eos R and eos R5...
mainly i observed that the number of focus points varies from camera to camera...
where
eos R have 5655 focus points
5D mark -vi have 61 focus points
and
eos R5 have 1053 focus points
I dont know how far having more focus points plays key role irrespective of having eos R having 15 mega pixel lesser than eos R5
After watching your video is it right to got for eos R rather than going to eos R5 or eos R6
or need to look at Sony a7R IV
pls give us your valuable opinion which can help us ...
I'm an Aviation photographer, and I got 5D MK IV. I can't upgrade to R5 do you recommend R6 when it comes to picture quality?
Thanks!
R5 Gets heated when recording 20 minutes of videos, is good with photography though
Thank you!
the R5 or the R6 smashes the 80d out of the park, ive had them all
Thank you. This was really helpful to me. I already own the EOS R and RF glass trinity and non L primes, but I want that IBIS and animal autofocus. I’m thinking quite a while now if I should go with R5 or R6. Has to be the R5 then.
I own the Eos R and i'm just waiting for the Sigma RF version. There's no way i'm gonna be spending 3000$-4000$ (Canadian) for a lens.
4 kids!!! Whaaaaaaa??? Awesome!!! Love this channel by the way
Neither. LOVE the glass. Can't justify switching ecosystems
if you close your eyes and listen to this from 2:16 to 2:18 - It's Lee Morris talking!
I bought this Camera and Im not really sure how to turn on and off the Low Pass Filter. Can you help me with this?
5d mark iv and r6 and EOS R and Sony a7iii rp which one is best for wedding photography and long term use
R6
How has your opinion changed since the video overheating issue has come to the forefront. Plus... good luck buying one at Msrp.
The video I needed . Thank you
should i get the r or the r6?
Great video! Can you do a video about Olympus and m4/3 if it is worth it for everyday photography and portraits?
Extremely helpful information w/o tons of spec comparisons. Just kinda like sitting at a card game and talking about camera gear...just honest opinion. Love it!! Thank you!
I'm also confused
I'm just thinking should I buy canon 5d mark 4 or sony a7 iii
An EOS R, is basically a 5DmIV but mirrorless, you can use EF or the new RF glass, got better video modes and is slightly better than the a7 iii
Wedding still photography better r5 or r6?
The 8K video gives you a very good posibility to save some money on glas because you can zoom in an 8K video without los of quality.
Thank you for another excellent review! You da man!
and here I am waiting to buy a RP at a discount haha
im stIll shooting with a 5D mk 2 :) im looking at the r6 the r5 is killer expensive for sure.
Well said, I am using a Nikon D 750 for years and completely satisfied with the results. But his opinion is valuable those have GAS.
Personally , I'd go with the 5DS-R .
And you get GREAT dynamic range. What then?
i came to hear why i need to buy the R5 but honestly it is not enough reason for me. i promised my self that I will not be fooled again by the fake hype of you tubers, I have the 5dmk iv for quite some time and i love but everyone was talking mirrorless camera agenda and how the Panasonic Lumix sh1 is monster of camera e.g full sensor 4k video and it had all the bells and whistles. i must say while the videotaping technologies is a leap over cannon but that's was all; canon was ahead in every other aspects . i still have to use my canon 5dmk iv for everything else and i am $4k hard working unhappy with my sh1 and it is even noise than my canon 5dmk iv .. i am not making this financial error again the specs are so incremental and the 8k video is welcome but to exaggerated for most people still have 2k and 4k T.V. in there homes
Love your videos, Pye. God bless!!!!!!
So I'm more of a hobbyist, with sport, travel photography and the occasional side gig using a 7D Mrk ii. Been looking to go full frame but would like to reduce the weight of my gear and keep printing my work. Would the R6 be a better buy than the R5 in my case?
The same here, I'm holding my $$$ since when they started talk about this r5, also shoot with the 7dii and i can't wait to get the R5
When are we to expect the release of the five or six?
Rumors are sometime this summer (could be this month even, last we saw July 30th).
ide like to see the new codecs and 10 bit jpeg photos?
As a long time Canon user, and owner of Eos R, I don' t see how a non professional photographer (not a videographer) could justify the expenses for the transition from R to R5. As for R vs MkIV, ergonomics and controls are the only reasons you would prefer the MkIV over the R
im taking photography and film i a month in college i need ether the r or the r6 buy that time if the r price drops by then hell ya if not r6 it is
Thank you very much 😊
Thanks for watching!
you have highlighted some important points. the importance of RF lenses in terms of the resolution of the new sensors and the transition to the new system must be considered in a rational way for the business. That makes sense.
Why are you not in the Canon event?
I loooove ur coolnesss!!!! Ur awesome!
That was great Lee impression...
why would anyone go from 5d4 to R6?
I’m sorry, but I didn’t see the point of this video. Gosh...The R5 hasn’t even come out yet! We can’t even put them side by side. And the EOS R, which I have, is an AMAZING camera. RF glass, while not in front of a 50 megapixel camera, is amazing on the EOS R. The EOS RP isn’t too far behind, either.
PYE PLEASE I WANT TO UPGRADE FROM MY OLD 5DMIII TO EITHER 5DMIV OR THE EOSR. PLEASE AM A WEDDING AND PORTRAIT PHOTOGRAPHER. WHAT DO YOU ADVICE PLEASE. THANKS
I am almost on the same boat. What did you choose?
@@sebastiangajewski5532 EOSR PLEASE
@@emmanuelowusu-prempeh2151 Thank you. How do you find AF speed and accuracy? Does face/eye AF work well in AI-servo mode?
Love your honest video. I have only Canon Cameras (6D, 60D, and SL1) and Canon lenses. I wish I could afford a new camera and lenses. Just can[t do it now.
You're in a class all alone : class
Love the humor in the video. I have mark IV and eos r and EF and Rf glass. Also I’m an amateur in fact hobbyist is more accurate. Will I buy R5..? He’ll yea! But why? Because I want to save on 1dx mark III:-)
I will buy oes R 😉
$9k for the R5 + two lenses. Will wait till I start traveling again to jump in the deep end.
camera is insane but also insane in price! Ill keep my IV :)
Most of the upgrades of the R5-R6 cameras are in the video field, but with crazy overheating !!! ... The rest is no longer important ,,, not worth upgrading or buying a camera for crazy overheated video.
I think you’re pretty cool!! :) You’re funny and I love your videos!
