Bang ending? Seriously? Star Trek isn't known for its bang endings. Star Trek is known to be thought provoking and to give you the feeling of transcendence. This ending feels more like Star Trek than the actual one does.

Star Trek on FILM is known for bang endings.
Motion Picture = V'ger explodes in a brilliant flash of swirling light
Wrath of Khan = Reliant explodes as Enterprise warps ahead of the shock wave
Search for Spock = fire and explosions until the Genesis Planet bursts
Voyage Home = only real exception
Final Frontier = Zaps the wanna-be-God creature
Undiscoered Country = Battle of Khitomer
Generations = fist-fight, blaster, crash Kirk dies
First Contact = do I really need to explain this one? Kinda obvious at this point
this is why I say Star Trek is best on television or in a non-theatrical series format

    • @k1productions87
      @k1productions87 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

It didn't explode "technically", but it was a big flashy booming effect to give the appearance of a grand theatrical finale. A big fancy effects lightshow that made no real scientific sense (aside from lots of fanboy retconning to justify it), and a big orchestral score to give it that extra oomph.
The point is, things that work on television don't work the same way in the theater. By all rights they should, but they don't.

The second movie--the most popular one of the lot from classic Trek fans, I might add--ended with a massive explosion of a Federation ship, and the resulting Genesis wave created a whole new planet out of a nebula (which, that last part is really stupid from a science fiction perspective, when you think about it)
Hell, an entire planet gets annihilated in a huge explosion one movie later. So don't tell me Star Trek isn't known for huge explosions.

Yeah.. Insurrection was really the first time we see Hollywood dig their fangs into Star Trek and Just totally Ruin it. As it turns out, a Great deal of the original scrip was cut out to fit Paramount's preferred narrative's and time constraints. Because of this, we ended up with a generic action movie opposed to a genuine Star Trek story.

This Ending is actually in the novelisation and it was cut out so late that Jerry Goldsmith actually did compose music for it.

I think it was a better ending, because it was almost like a 'was it worth it?' moment, and a sort of flashback of Ru'afo's life
he lost, but instead of giving in, he'd rather go towards the immortal energy of the rings alone in his pod. He finally gets his wish to become younger, but it also ironically ends up being his ultimate demise after all that time as well. Seemed rather existential with him looking up at the planet, and then the angle of the camera focusing on him in a light, as if he's going back to creation himself

With some small tweaks - the movies could have been deeper and greater. Instead it seemed like the producers did not know what made Star Trek 'Star Trek', and opted for action movie stuff which I think was self defeating, nonsensical, and damaging to the Star Trek brand.
This ending is definitely more poetic than the actual one that was finalised, but they could add more poignancy by letting the audience know that all villains are people too, he was trying to do something he thought was right. This is allegorical to real-life, people, even bad people, do the best they can given the cards they are dealt with. Driving this point home would have leaped Insurrection from the forgettable action movie it was, to a great deeper movie it could have been.

This ending is more thematically correct. The whole point of the movie was to harvest the ring energy. It makes 100% sense for the villain to die by that same energy. The ending we got, while serviceable, doesn't tie into the film at all.

Only problem with that ending is it makes the whole "We need to do something that'll kill everything on the planet below to get this elixir of life" plan unnecessary (although that would still be somewhat plausible from the point of view of pure spite), as it would imply you could literally just fly a shuttle up to the rings & dip into them for a second or two to turn back a few decades of your life.

My point is, why didn't they just use THAT music in this video, instead of just reusing an earlier cue? Woulda been nice to see both the sequence as it was completed and hear the music that was written for it in action.

I don't thing this would have worked. It undoes the purpose of the antagonists motivation.
previously in the movie didn't the evil admiral say that "we don't quite know how the damn thing works, but THIS way is the ONLY way to save the Son'a"
if at the end of the movie after everything that happened that's how he's killed off.. EVERYONE would say "well.. why not just put them in escape pods and slow dip them in ?"
the antagonists would be doing what their doing for no real reason. Although the Sona are the bad guys in this movie one of the things I like is that there is still a certain amount of "poor them" if only this jackass wasn't their boss.. maybe they could work out their differences with the people on the planet and work things out, fix them up.
but he is.. so they aren't and can't and they're likely gonna die really horribly.
there is a reason for their actions.
    so, we get a boom.
then we get family reunions and peace.

Bang Ending : let's give it a sh*t cliché Hollywood ending. Good? Good. Considering they remade the same film 10 times, it should not be surprising to anyone... Premise goes like this...
--- Alien Entity / Probe wants to destroy Earth (or Some planet or Enterprise) for some selfish purpose. Enterprise must save (______) with some kind of Countdown Motivation for suspense--- Exact same premise in almost every single Star Trek movie. Every Villain has same motivation, for at least - and don't forget Countdown must only be stopped at the very last second!
I - (Probe destroy Earth) - countdown to orbiting probes
II - (Kahn Destroy Enterprise) - countdown to Genesis explosion
III - (Klingon Destroy Enterprise / Genesis Planet) - Countdown to Enterprise / Planet destruct
IV (same as I Probe Destroy Earth substitute whales for 'creator') - Countdown to Earth destruct
    V - pure sh*te / don't care
VI - (Klingon destroy Enterprise) - "Countdown" to Assassination attempt
Generations - (Soren destroy Planet) - Countdown to missile launch
First Contact - (assimilation could be a form of destruction) Countdown to Self-Destruct (again)
Insurrection - (S'ona destroy Planet) - Countdown to Injector Launch
Nemesis - (Shinzy destroy Earth / Enterprise) - Countdown to Thaleron firing

It was a botched project from the beginning. It's like with the TNG movies (except First Contact) they took the first draft of some random script and just went with it as fast as they could with nobody saying "Wait, this script blows blue balls." Mr. Plinket hits the nail on the head with his reviews. I would kill for a new TNG film though, a good one.

But in fairness, the idea of Star Trek was always much better than the execution. There haven't been many, honestly "good" films or moments in Trek. They've fallen short of the mark a lot of times : /
