      The librarian is a little bit ridiculous, but I like the scene overall. It would have provided some nice background, and made the whole fountain of youth premise more meaningful. Instead we're rushed through the earlier parts of the movie to get to the mediocre action scenes, and _Insurrection_ ends up being neither a satisfying action movie nor the decent character-driven movie that it could have been.

    You can tell that this is a re-use of the USS Voyager Engineering set. The warp core is being obscured by those shelves of books behind the librarian at 0:10. You can also see the upper level of the engineering set at 0:14 at the top of the screen.

    Some of this really needed to be in the movie. Like, so many people had a problem with Insurrection not being linked to the Dominian War and this scene could have helped change that. It would have been so great to see what the Enterprise was up to during the war.

    Jesus Christ, this scene was fun, gave useful dialogue explaining the Sona, and even connected to Trek lore mentioning ketrecel-white. Why the hell was this cut from the movie?!?!? It might have helped me hate this movie a lot less.

    • @PaperbackWizard
      @PaperbackWizard 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      I always hated that they mentioned ketracel-white. It's not just a narcotic, it's what the Dominion uses to enslave the Jem'hadar. The Sona producing it means they're in league with the Dominion. This was sloppy.

    • @MS-19
      @MS-19 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Although the reference to the Dominion was a welcome nod to the continuity of the TV series (specifically Deep Space Nine, which reciprocated by mentioning the Son'a in one of its episodes), the mention of Ketracel White was an unfortunate plot oversight by the writers. DS9 showed that Ketracel White is the tool by which the Founders controlled their genetically engineered footsoldiers, the Jem'Hadar. It seems massively unlikely that the Son'a, a group living on the opposite side of the galaxy, would have developed the drug independently, especially in light of the fact that it was created specifically to control the Jem'Hadar, so the only reason they would have to make it would be that the Founders outsourced production to them - but this too seems massively unlikely, as it would effectively mean that the Founders are giving up some of their control over the drug and the Jem'Hadar and putting it into alien hands. The Founders sought ultimate control over everything, so it stretches credibility that they would cede it, even to a relatively minor race that (going by the extra dialogue in this scene) is dying out.

      Why would they have a library / books / paper? Why does the Captain have any books. Or Data, or Riker?
      It's the flagship and they have countless alien species on board at times, many times different delegations... of course you'll have cultural references to your past.

In the later days of the war, a recently constructed facility indeed existed at their Devos II outpost. Just the fact that they have scratch paper and a pen feels really weird considering the overall nature of Star Trek, its theming and such. Yep, it's just incredibly anachronistic. We don't use paper for a lot of things now that we used to. I can accept that people keep real physical books around for nostalgia and historical purposes, but day to day? You're not using books, and you're not using paper in the 24th century. Why? Think of all the things even today that you now do on a tablet or computer screen that you used to do on paper. This will only accelerate as we improve our tech and how we interact with it.
      And in a universe where you can give a blind man artificial eyes so he can see, glasses make no sense at all. Maybe in Kirk's day, but not at this point in the Star Trek timeline. Good for them they cut this out.

    Since when does the librarian need eye glasses? In the 24th century, you don't need it

    • @gabegu5102
      @gabegu5102 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I know it is almost a hundred years later but Kirk had to wear glasses because he was allergic to the drug retinax 5. Could be a similar reason

    • @pwnmeisterage
      @pwnmeisterage 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Maybe the glasses are part of the uniform. Tradition. Symbol of office and authority. Much like that silly bosun's whistle.
      Or maybe she's part of a bookish "alien" superlibrarian species. Permitted to wear her glasses for cultural reasons, like Worf gets to wear his baldric, Ro gets to wear her earring, etc.

    • @compmanio36
      @compmanio36 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@gabegu5102 True, but in Kirk's time they didn't have artificial eyes. By this point in the timeline, Geordi no longer used his visor and switched to artificial eyes that could see the whole spectrum. I guess maybe this lady didn't want to have the surgery and was used to the glasses and embraced it as part of her character but it still just feels weird for a show set in a future where they've shown they can cure blindness....but not nearsightedness or astigmatism?

    I can see why it was cut. I think they’re trying to hint that these two are being more youthful due to the effects of the planet, but it’s a touch too silly and the broader exposition isn’t necessary.

    LMAO!! 24th Century librarians exhibiting stereotypical librarian "shushing." :D What's funny is, in the libraries in which I work, it's pretty noisy and I've never heard a librarian shushing anyone. (I heard some tell kids to stop running or jumping).
    Also, this the natural progression of their already close friendship (and previous romantic relationship), the effect of the planet or "THE PHASE??" Maybe all 3. :) But whatever it is, it's cute. :D

    I can see why they cut it. In the future, if you doing all this off computers do you really need a central location to sit and work on the computer. If they had physical books like they had in the display behind them then it would make sense. Probably for a starship they'll have collaboration areas and if they have special paper books or machines then they'll have a central area. But not to do research like this.
