Star Trek: Nemesis Ending Fan Edit - Data's Farewell (with Deleted Scenes)

  • So... one of the things I was unsatisfied with in Star Trek: Nemesis was the ending, which I felt could have been as powerful as Spock's sacrifice in The Wrath of Khan. However, on the DVD, there were some deleted scenes that could have made the ending feel more complete. So, I decided to do a project of giving a more satisfying ending to the film and show the characters reflecting upon Data's death.
    Changes I made include:
    Added one deleted scene titled, “Cleaning Out Data’s Quarters," which shows Geordi and Worf- well, cleaning out Data's quarters. Geordi finds Data's emotion chip, and realizes that Data had made the decision to sacrifice himself on his own. In the middle of this scene, I included a little montage of clips from the previous films.
    Added Picard’s speech from when he talks to B4 as voiceover, and Jerry Goldsmith’s track, “A New Ending”
    Added a second deleted scene titled, “Advice for the New First Officer," which has Riker pranking the Enterprise's new Number One.
    Added Jerry Goldsmith’s track from The Motion Picture, titled “A Good Start,” and a title card that says, “The human adventure continues…” over the final seconds, as an homage to the ending of The Motion Picture.

      @@nexy12 The Director knew nothing about TNG, so even the long and close friendship between Data and Geordi had gone missing completely. You see the footage concentrating on Picard, Troi being the stereotypical "woman breaking down", but Geordi, Data's best friend for ~15 years at the time is depicted more like the colleague who feels sympathetic to the situation rather than showing grief, disbelief or any level of despair. That role is solely left to Picard. An while that would also fit Picards more fatherlike relationship with Data and the acting of Sir Patrick especially in the bridge-scene is phenomenal, the fact that Geordi, and Riker as well, seem barely affected at all just breaks the scene for me.
      Riker consoles Troi while Geordi feels for Picard's loss. But that demotes a significant part of the core-family to innocent bystanders. And for that reason (and others) the movie does not work for most Star Trek fans. Just remember that ridiculous out-of-the-blue rape scene ...

      @@frankb__431 as clearly well written as your insightful comments are, I would like to add that it was also strikingly obvious to me that the director seemed to work with no sense of background knowledge of characters specific to the Star Trek franchise (TNG) and their relationships with each other. This movie was presented as a big screen science fiction action film - and unfortunately NOT a swan song for the deserving fans of the even more deserving crew, of the Enterprise.

    I'm the extra who enters the shot at 9:13 crossing left to right in front of Picard. I was on set for about 3 days. On the day this was shot, Patrick Stewart and the director got into an argument about how the film should end. Patrick had ideas about featuring some of the younger people on set (to indicate that they were the future, I guess), and I remember a very heated exchange that followed where the director basically said that it was his film and he was in charge of decision making.

    That scene of Worf and Geordi in Data's quarters was absolutely EVERYTHING. Geordie got shafted in the theatrical cut - HIS reaction to Data's sacrifice should have been the emotional heart of the film - and a silent scene of two friends combing through the physical (and televisual) history of Data's life moved me to tears. Your music choice elevated that sequence from a bit of discarded footage to what should have been the crux of the film. Well done.
    The familiarity of the items in his quarters and the appearance of Spot would have been a wonderful salve in the theatrical cut to a film that seemed to largely be ignorant of the characters' histories.

    Glad these scenes exist. They tie the ending of Nemesis and the Picard S3 well. Riker's loyalty to Picard never once failed. Even when he was presented with I think 2 separate ships to command. Why couldn’t Stuart Baird come up with a ending like this? Seeing B4 again actually detracts from Data’s loss and somehow cheapens it.
    This is a much better ending with genuine emotion going through data’s things in his quarters and accepts data’s loss with conviction by giving the audience time to grieve and reflect on who data was.

      When Spock died in Star Trek 2 they did not show Spock again after he died.
      it gave real stakes and a genuine feeling of loss with it.
      They needed to do the same with Nemesis, seeing B4 so suddenly destroys the films need for the audience to come to terms with Data’s death.
      In this edit you actually have a chance to actual miss data, to realize he is gone and not coming back.
      This ending gives you that real sense of loss that the ending of the theatrical release sorely needed to sell it.
      Stuart Baird clearly does not understand how to end a film like Star Trek with real stakes and consequences needed make a real impact with filmgoers.
      A brilliant edit as I said. I wish they would change the ending to this as it’s much more emotional and memorable as it should be.

      On a couple of Trek related TH-cam channels, the story goes in the books that Data's CPU or something of that nature was put into B4 and Data's contagious was brought back to life overtaking B4's existence. Data would eventually become captain of the Enterprise. But after the Kelvin timeline, that story is no longer canon.

    In many ways the crew on this ship were a family as so many of them came from pretty dysfunctional families. Picard, Riker, Worf, Data. Hell when Worf was on Deep Space 9 he chose to sleep in a more cramped quarters on the Defiant than on the station because he needed to sleep on a ship, the couple times he'd return to the Enterprise crew during those years he always fit right back in.

  • @mystic1266
    @mystic1266 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    My only issue with the movie was whomever wrote the script, did not research very well. There were many points where information in the movie contradicted established information. The most obvious is when Picard is talking with his new first officer about their mission to Deneb, stating that its where no one has gone before. In truth, the very first mission of the Enterprise D was to Farpoint Station, located in the Deneb system.

    • @lanarkorras4411
      @lanarkorras4411 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      "Place" might refer to a place within the Deneb system. It doesn't make a whole lot of sense, but I think this is what they were going for.
      Either way, this ending is leagues above the original B4llsh*t - well done!

    • @HoneycuttVideos
      @HoneycuttVideos  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I think visiting a station within the system and exploring the entire system are different enough from one another, so I don’t mind it. And, Picard looking at Worf when he says, “It should be interesting” could be seen as an indicator that he remembers Deneb from the Farpoint mission.

    • @chrissonofpear1384
      @chrissonofpear1384 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's the Denab system. Different place, to Deneb Kaitos (presumably the actual TNG Deneb)
      With the more famous Deneb, much, much further away. But then speed and distance have rarely been that consistent in Star Trek.

    And frak. Geordi finding his emotion chip. Data always had it within him.
    I'd love to see an essay by Steve Shives about how Spock's death worked, and this didn't. Oh, I cry at each death. But Wrath of Khan ends with hope.
