  • Friends, what is a Holy Hour? How do you do it, and why should you start? On today’s episode of the “Word on Fire Show,” Brandon Vogt and I discuss one of the most powerful spiritual disciplines you can adopt.
A listener asks, if the Eucharist is so important, why isn’t it mentioned in the Nicene Creed?

If the heart wanders or is distracted, bring it back to the point quite gently and replace it tenderly in its Master's presence. And even if you did nothing during the whole of your hour but bring your heart back and place it again in Our Lord's presence, though it went away every time you brought it back, your hour would be very well employed."

I was moved so very much when you mentioned that Jesus called out to his "friends" to stay with him during his crisis moment---the Lord calling out to us; and we failed him when he needed the comfort of those closest to him. I've read that passage so many times over the years, without realizing the depth of our Lord's humanity, as you expressed it here.

I’ve been building up my prayer stamina and formulating my prayer “framework” for a holy hour through the larger Exodus 90 spiritual exercise/journey. I experience a lot of the same things Bishop Baron has described. I start with a rosary to “clear my monkey mind” and petition to the Lord for his help with keeping my E90 disciplines and for the deliverance of me and those closest to me (I even dedicate a bead or two to my enemies). Envision their faces as I say a Hail Mary. If there is something particular about a person that my mind can’t help but expand on, I let it flow before I do another HM.
Doing the Rosary first really helped me get the Holy Hour started. After that, I read a passage of scripture and then enter into about 10-20min of “contemplative prayer”. Like Bishop Baron describes its more of a free form period where I reflect on whatever is closest to my heart. Often what to do for the day in one way or another. Often times i exit this period with at least a few missions or focuses or guidances for my day.
I always pray that God give me the strength to focus on the gift of the present day/moment. Up until recently, I have built up a strange habit of getting distracted with the cares and pleasures of the world. A lot of these things are outside of my sphere of influence (national/international politics or pro-sports are good examples). I find that it’s a subtle, yet significant, form of sin to lose your time to these wonderings which amount to almost fantasy even though they exist in the real world. I have my family, my parish, my local community right before me that suffer my lack of attention if I’m “fantasizing” about worldly issues neither here nor there.
Exodus 90 is really hammering home for me three pillars of Christian life: prayer, asceticism, and fraternity. I’m new to it. I don’t know anyone else on Guam who has heard of it or has tried it. I’ve cut out bad habits and addictions I’ve been struggling with for years. This isn’t a 90 day exercise for me. It will become my lifestyle. I honestly think attempting an E-90 type exercise should be maybe a final exam of sorts for confirmation students or RCIA students. Not as a pass/fail but as a gift so that they have tangible practices and a minimum of 90 days developing their own relationship to Jesus, and God willing a life long devotion to God Almighty.
My holy hours started out taking more like 1.5-2hrs because of a lack of focus. Starting with the “warm-up” of something structured really improved the effectiveness AND efficiency of my time.
Thank you Bishop Baron and Word on Fire.
    Vivat Jesus!

Now I know he's there either way and it doesn't matter where I'm at in my head. This commentary has really helped. Thank you.

If you can't get to a chapel with the Blessed Sacrament, stop and think: Is Jesus restricted by walls? By distance? No. So He's just as present to you wherever you are. The difference is our attitude and attention. Yes, it is very difficult to not be distracted at home or wherever, but objectively there's no difference for Him. But try to make a sacred space where you are if you can't get to a church or chapel.

"Can you not watch one hour with me?" is powerful motivation. Go off alone and sit in silence. Below you forget the world, forget your prayers, forget your holy visions and fears. Above you, place a cloud between yourself and God and simply wait, expecting nothing. A perfect dark and holy night with a naked intent for only the presence of God Almighty, nothing else. The first fleeting sensations of this holy darkness may come between breaths after exhalation. Ignore the demons of ego until they are quiet. Be single for God alone. Be patient. Persist.

I used to go to vespers with Eucharistic Adoration. I miss going. Exposition and benediction with the priests at our parish giving a small homily.
It would probably still happen, but our parish priests say we parishioners have to ask for it. Jesus needs us always, yes, but when He's exposed in the Monstrance, we need to be even more present. Thank you for offering this talk. I just went to confession and said to the priest that I wish I could get to a holy hour more frequently. I also sometimes grieve not being able to make it to Mass in person and serve by choir or cantoring. I go to Mass online more, right now. "It's like the Lord begging his friends to come." That's very true.
I have been praying for my fiance for his return to being Catholic. But that doesn't happen overnight. He comes sometimes. He says he will receive communion and the Sacraments when he's ready. He says he will be happy to marry me but he won't be ready for Mass until he's sure he's ready to receive Jesus Christ fully.

I first learned about the Holy Hour from Fr. Ed Broom and the Oblates of the BVM. He said it's not a 60-minute hour but 70 minutes, because of distractions and stuff. You actually don't get started right away.

Eminence Barron: Every day before going to mass I have my Holy Hour or Hour of Spiritual Communion. I put my I-Pad on my right side (that's where the power cable goes) with the Holy Eucharist live, a crucifix in front with a poster of the Divine Mercy on one side and on the other side a poster of the Virgin Mary (The Virgin of Guadalupe) and, on my left side, the Holy Trinity (La Divina Providencia). Blessings

I Look At You, You Look At Me
    Thank you, Lord.
Your goodness truly knows no bounds.
    Though we sinners
    oft forsake thee.
Yet you woo our wayward hearts.
And bring us back to you,
    again, and again.
    Faithful Lord, loyal Lord.
    Patient, steadfast friend.
    Nothing can stay your hand,
    nor bend your will.
And you will that we love you.
O set us free, Holy One,
to love you freely and wholly.
    There is nothing on earth,
    or in our vain imaginations
    so precious as your love.
    Though men hunt and mine
    the earth for hidden treasures,
    no treasure is greater
    than your simple Presence.
Aid us that we may stay!
    And remain with you,
that we may keep watch with you,
    forever.

A theologian by the name of David Torkington wrote a small book called “How to Pray”; in it he suggests the English transliteration of the Greek word parousia, term for the arrival of a king/The King of Kings. It breaks down into: profession, adoration, reconciliation, offering, union, silence, intercession, and action. Do as the Holy Spirit moves you.

I am a new Catholic, was a Charismatic Protestant for 30 years. It was the Eucharist that brought me home to the Catholic Church. Is it only considered as a Holy Hour if the Eucharist is exposed for Adoration? I go to a chapel where the Host is veiled.

    Thank you for your comments
I might also suggest the book “Manual of Eucharistic Adoration from the Poor. Lares of Perpetual Adoration (Tan books), page 35 , but for sure it’s a very helpful resource
St Thérèse of Liseux also had very simple advice based on her experiences
I also find it interesting that our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ asked the three apostles with him if they could just give one hour, even after they had pledged their loyalty at Jesus’ proclamation of his body and blood, and the last supper .

In Catholic school you don't get study hall, that time is used for Theology courses. The school would schedule one hour a week in our church for the entire school to go to Holy Hour and Benediction. It was so easy back then! Once a month they would do the First Friday mass during theology. All Catholic Schools should do this. The Bishops of the Arch Diocese should renew this.

Bishop Barron, can you please bring up making the Holy Hour accessible for working men and women during the next Bishop’s Conference? Around my diocese, I find that Adoration wraps up before working men and women can even get there.

Thank you, Brian, for bringing up the point that many lay people don't have a Chapel as part of their residence. Can the "Holy Hour" be the ultimate, but also, one's own devotional reading & prayer time satisfy that good practice? Also, this new book of the HOLY HOUR looks (to my thinking) more useful than the monthly prayer books that are dated & once the month ends, are basically good only for recycling. That bothered me @ having that subscription.

In Him, only rather than alone, we are able to overcome the world because He has conquered the world. This is who we are in Him. This is who He is in us. This is the message to the Apostles before the Passion. It is so because what Our Lord says, is. His Words change us in world.

    Things Jesus said:
"The world hates me because I testify about it that it's works are evil"
"Don't be surprised when the world hates you, it hated me first"
"If any man looks at a woman with lust he has already committed adultery in his heart with her."
"Unless you eat my body and drink my blood you have no life in you"
"Those that believe the Son have eternal life, those that do not obey the Son will not see life but the wrath of God abides on them"
"Unless you believe in me you will die in your sins"
"Unless you repent you will likewise perish"
Read your Bible or you will be misinformed.
