The Biblical Vision of the Family - Bishop Barron's Sunday Sermon

  • Friends, the first reading from Genesis and the Gospel from Mark this week are of great importance. They have to do with what we call Christian anthropology-the biblical understanding of who we are-and most specifically, in relation to marriage and family. This question of how we define ourselves is of course on the minds of many people today, and the readings, in a beautifully compact way, bring out the Christian answer.
    Mass Readings
    Reading 1 - Gn 2:18-24
    Psalm - Ps 128:1-2, 3, 4-5, 6
    Reading 2 - Heb 2:9-11
    Gospel - Mk 10:2-16 or 10:2-12

Suffering from same-sex attraction. Never been in a relationship. So when I heard this Genesis at the church, I can't help feeling hurt. Asking God if He wills marriage, why do I suffer like this..
Brothers and sisters, would you please pray for me so that I can discern His will for my life and let His will be done..
Edit: Thank you for all your prayers.. It means a lot..

Homosexuality, similar to the brain’s sense of gender, is a naturally occurring phenomenon. In this case, it is a function of nothing more than developmental processes. There is nothing supernatural about it. Don’t force yourself into a relationship with the other sex, for you would only be denying them the genuine love they deserve, as well as lying to yourself.

Hey friend - remember, the bishop you just watched has also never married and lives a fruitful, love-filled life. We don't need to have sex with someone to love and receive love deeply, truly, and intimately. These passages in Genesis tell the story of mankind as a whole, but marriage is not the calling for every individual person. Ask God to lead you in love. Consider the people in your life right now that can use and appreciate you help, skills, and presence. Minister to those close to you. Be ministered to by close friends. You're going to make it. Day by day.
Remember too, our Lord was also single. And he loved deepest of all.

As a Church we need to do more to help people who find themselves single later in life, getting beyond the age of religious vocations, but finding themselves with physical, emotional and / or financial barriers to seeking and finding a spouse. How can we get better as a Church in helping these folks find healing and find their mission. The readings today have a deep meaning for these folks too. I pray for people who feel left out in the cold or that they have failed to live their mission when they find themselves in this situation.

This Sunday Gospel touches my heart deeply as I reflected on how God intervened through our Blessed Mother to save my marriage 17 years ago on the pilgrimage. Through interlocution, she gave me a mission, "You are to bring light to darkness," which I wept bitterly, being a promiscuous man. My life was transformed by being awakened twice each night to pray the Rosary and Divine Mercy filled with great joy and love beyond this world. Living a life of chastity is only possible when we completely trust and surrender our lives to Jesus and Mary. It is not once saved, always saved but through constant conversion to Christ. Viva Cristo Rey and Ave Maria.

Dear Bishop Barron, you are talking out of my sleeves! I used to have a lot of struggling with Jesus' strict words regarding divorce. It took me quite some time, until I could " fathom " it. For my understanding, God in persona of His Son always wanted to be recognized as a You. He did not want to be alone without any reflecting love.
According to my favourite Saint, Hildegard von Bingen, God's Word was " My Son " , and thus everything came into being. The old creed says " Light from Light, true God from true God....". So everything was created for the benefit and wellbeing of the human being, God Himself wanted to incarnate to live with His beloved children. He let Adam follow his reflections, i.e. by naming the creatures, putting them in brackets like a formula, defining each individual creature. He let Adam feel his " loneliness " and incompleteness, missing the loving answer to his thoughts. Dreaming his companion is a wonderful picture that shows how a virtual picture can enter reality . Hildegard says, that recognizing Eva was recognizing his Love. Vice versa, Eva recognized Heaven. Eva, the " Rib ", makes him Man, who can walk upright. Imagine a man with a missing rib, cannot walk and stand like a human.
God/Jesus had this in mind from the beginning, " I shall marry you for ever " and I shall love you again ", you will call me My Spouse. Latest, when he came to free His beloved Bride from eternal death, rather died instead of leaving her in the claws of the devil, followed her into the underworld to bail her out.
How often has He been betrayed ?
So, Marriage is the living sign of God's love, bringing Everything into life.

It struck me when Bishop Barron said Adam is the prototype of scientists. I had considered this passage to reflect how God has chosen for us to learn. Certainly God knew that the animals were not a suitable mate for him. But He needed Adam to know that. In the negative knowledge gained through the initial experience of naming the animals Adam was able to then recognize the uniqueness and suitability of Eve as a partner.

Thank you Bishop Barron for so beautifully articulating God's plan for us, for building our society on the foundation of men and women committed to one another and as one flesh in communion with God and committed and open to bringing children into the world. How terrible it is today to see this vision abandoned, to see self as the paramount entity to the detriment of children and the insane insistence on the right to kill the unborn child. How can we not see that this view is societal suicide? We must regain our sight and sanity and repent. Only by returning to God and surrendering to His will can we achieve the human flourishing He desires for us.

We need this reminder when this vision is under assault and the brokenness of our world makes it difficult to uphold. I also recognize an important idea in today's 2nd reading, that God came to us in Jesus, identifying Himself with our weaknesses, so we could be restored and that it would be possible for us to uphold this vision to reveal God's glory in our marriage and family relationships.

This was a beautiful, sensible, and relevant homily, covering people's relation to our own families and even referencing the animal world as well. I am baffled over the increasing willingness of young people categorically to say, "No kids." I assume that when a culture like ours panders more and more to ever younger people that a certain percent will come to believe that life ends at age 16, and how they feel then will be the way they feel when they're 60. Except it's not, and I have quite a few "cat lady" friends, adamantly pro-cat-lady, who nevetheless admit to existential desperation caused by a combination of loss of religion and lack of family. These aren't stupid people but they seem unwilling to own up to the truth - I guess because there's a Comicbook Guy "I've wasted my life" moment that's hard to face.

Bishop, how clearly you teach the truth. I wish to spread this message from God to all the earth and bring back the necessity of the family. May the Lord continue to richly bless you and keep you safe.

Saul of Tarsus, who died in Damascus, was a profound follower of tradition and the rust that had made tradition the Pharisee priestly caste. Seeing and listening to the Lord, he understood that the Gospel, the Word of the Son of God the Creator, is much bigger than that Holy Land, because what is important is the soul, the only thing we are, and not the mere land
Freed from the burden that Saul had on him, the one born in Saint Paul, preached to every soul because he perfectly understood the Greatness of the Love of his Lord
In my opinion, Saint Stephen, the Brave, Humble and Eloquent follower of the Risen Lord, martyred for the Glory of his Lord, often accompanied Saint Paul on all his travels, while the traveling Apostle slept, and while the traveling Apostle was awake in his dreams
I doubt that we will ever understand, at least I cannot and I doubt that I can, the Greatness of the Love of the Risen Lord when He teaches us to call God the Creator, Father of God Christ, and Father of every creature shown worthy of HIM, "Father." I doubt very much that I will ever understand it, if that blessed day ever comes.

Beautiful Sermon, Bishop! ALL Catholics need to stand up for the unborn, marriage, family!!!! My husband & I will celebrate our 20 yr anniversary in 2 weeks & marriage & childrearing are the best things we ever did; for God, for ourselves, for each other & for society as a whole. We said right from the beginning that divorce was not a word that would be uttered in our house. It has not always been easy, but it has been worth it. We need to start seeing marriage & children as the blessing that they truly are. (also: I LOVE hearing you say out loud for us to go look at our Bible. I have had a lot of hate & ignorance from Protestants who go around telling people that priests tell us not to read the Bible. I personally have NEVER had a priest utter any such nonsense. I actually have a parish priest that reads directly from many sections of the Bible in his homily, separate from the readings/Gospel & our parish has 4 different Bible study groups. So to hear you say it outloud for anyone to hear is awesome!!!! )

If we understand that what is valuable is our soul, and that of our brothers, in trial like us, we would decide to safeguard that of our brothers, and, therefore, ours.
The enemy wants what is valuable, what we are, the only thing we come from and the only thing we take with us.
Being cautious and prudent in our decisions, believing in the Good God, One and Triune, prevents us from death in pride. If someone wants to apologize to their favorite Saint, the one they have the most admiration for, let them ask their Saint's apology for disturbing their Good Lord, God Christ.

Let us implore the Lord, Humility, so he can make us much better without perishing for it.
let us not ask that it be, but that it can be
someone who brings us closer to Christ is someone we can call Friend. It is not necessary for our test to end, to realize
Our earthly trial ends with a mere exhalation, when we awaken, let him who believes seek God Christ; He who does not believe what he sees, let him turn around, then he will believe in fear, and let him seek God Christ and His last Mercy

Beautiful and clarifying as always! I would have loved to hear more about the intersection of family and vocation. For me, it's easy to pigeon hole the term into the nuclear family as an American. But "family" has to mean more than just married couples with children or else we leave out all those who live the sacred single or religious life
