I had been having this disturbing thought every night before I went to sleep and had tried all sorts of mind games to try and shake it off, nothing seemed to work, and then I started praying old school every night before I go to sleep I pray; 1 Our Father, 1 Hail Mary, and 1 Glory Be, and really concentrating on the words that I was praying and if I felt I hadn't concentrated enough or said them to fast I would say all three over, two weeks later I don't have that disturbing thought anymore, also things seem to fall in place all around me now, things are just slightly easier, grease in the gears, I can't scientifically explain it but there has been a very noticeable difference for the better, I just feel better...just saying
Thanxs for the Advice and direction Mark, I am already deeply spiritual, not necessarily religious but spiritual, and was just pointing out how powerful a few simple prayers, not even asking for anything can be, I've have always found old school structured prayer to be very calming, God bless and have a good day

Worked for me too. But mine were more of nightmares or that thing called sleep paralysis or maybe, attacks by the enemy? Physically I used to wake up very early, almost daily, too due to reflux that had besieged me for years. Now that issue is gone too, including some deep-seated anger that had been nagging me for ages.
Try Confession. It really helps also. Write out a detailed list and take it with you. It is amazing experience. The Chaplet of St Michael is also a good suggestion.
God is real...prayers really work and the fruit is peace
the more you learn about the mystery of The Trinity the more you fall in love with God. and the more you learn what "love" really is and stop using it lightly. listening to Bishop Barron is always enlightening
I am very blessed to have a priest you trained Bishop Barron. He did something that surprised me by giving me a statue of St Peter to pray for clergy from the Pope to the parish priests. In three days I realized he had refocused my prayers.
I found early in my reconversion that due to my past it was the Father I needed and it was the Father that answered. But it is Jesus that walks with me.

Something I heard quite awhile ago which has helped me to be thankful is 'what if whatever you thank God for tonight, you will have in the morning, but what you forget to thank God for won't be there tomorrow'. It really helps me be so thankful for so many things that I just take for granted.
Dear Bishop and other readers.
When I see our Christ in the host, my mind reviews not how Jesus humbled Himself through His death and resurrection. Then my thoughts surrender to Christ’s absolute humility becoming the smallest of small, the host that feeds my soul, spirit, ego and self. No other god, could create the act then the remembrance of Christ’s life.
This is why the Mass and receiving communion is important to my own spiritual development. Thank you Bishop for teaching these powerful points to enhance my relationship with the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. 😅

I am also a cradle Catholic. I practiced Catholicism very devoutly when I was in my 20s, but when I was in my 30s my husband did not really want to be Catholic. We practiced Catholicism for a couple years, but after that he said he wanted us to join another church, not the church of his origin, but another church and I said that’s fine we’ll do that. And it was great, but now he has said that he is not so interested in continuing going to church with me, so I decided to join the Catholic faith again. And it has been wonderful. And as you say, Bishop Baron has been a wonderful resource during this experience.

Seems that what I learned from Al-Anon was true! In step 11, we are asked to pray to God for knowledge of His will and the strength to carry that out.
For a Bishop, Barron is pretty down to earth and filled with knowledge and his style of teaching is so sincere and humble...he doesn’t wear that authority attitude...praise Jesus, Catholics are blessed here! Jordan peterson changed my life, i will be waiting everyday in order to hear your talk. I pray he guides more people back to holy mother church as with me.
After listening to this video about prayer, why do you pray that he guides more people back? God is unchanging so what do you think your prayer is going to accomplish?

Praying is also doing, i share my story and suggest to hear him to people in situations like mine.
I will always ask god for aid, for he can do it all, i don't know his will, but yet i will keep doing it. I will always thank him and ask him to help me help more people.
We must be humble, always. Just watching a video does not change things. I pray to god he helps me help more people. I do not think God's will is that we never ask for anything. We don't know his will, but maybe he will change me to make me get closer to what i hope, if my intention is good.
I can only hope brother.
So far, i get a little closer to a better path every day, i try and try, i try to become better. Maybe this is the answer to my prayers and what god wants from me.

If God is unchanging did the Second Person of the Trinity always have a human nature?
I have such ADD when I try to quiet my mind in adoration, it's torture. So I can only do the quiet just adoring part in short bursts. Instead I always start my hour with the rosary prayed slowly and that's when I pray my petitions for everyone, then I can just adore for a few minutes, then I bring some kind of theological reading with me and I read that for a while, slowly and trying to really absorb it, then another burst of adoration and then I pray the office for whatever time of the day is I happen to be in Adoration. By the end I've quieted down and I can adore a little bit more. Then the hour's over. It's amazingly peace-giving. Even if I probably don't do it in the best way! I have to have a ton of structure to focus well.
Hail, Full of Grace, the Lord is with you. Blessed art thou amongst womwne and blessed is the fruit of thy womb. Holy mother Mary, hold us in your heart.
So much of freshness to the topic of Prayer! So much of originality and up-to-dateness on a subject as ancient as humanity and so much of realism on so abstract a one. Wow, this gave my morning meditation so much power! I definitely subscribe to divine simplicity, and this conversation really reinforced a lot of my suspicions about the power and purpose of prayer. Truly affirming.

Bishop Barron, I started praying the Rosary about two years ago. I pray it every day, sometimes twice a day. We have a local Relevant Radio station that prays it at the usual time I drive to and from work, and I pray it with them. I think that I have found that when we pray, the words themselves don't matter nearly as much as the heart does. If we truly want to let God change us (even when it feels like the ripping and tearing of guarded habits and understandings of long custom), it is in prayer that the change begins. We are told that the Spirit 'intercedes for us with groans that cannot be uttered,' and so most of the time my prayers will be wrong until God himself puts them right. Praying is the point. Giving oneself to God is the point. So I pray the Rosary, the _Suscipe,_ and the _Anima Christi_ regularly. God is in those prayers because in them I am in Christ.
And I'm not even Catholic, but I appreciate, even admire, the various Catholic spiritualities that are deeper than mine and from whom I can learn much.
Thank you, Bishop, for being an encouragement and a guide to some who do not share your label, but who would very much want to live your life. The Catholic Church is still a beacon.
Which NT leader told you to pray to Mary? Did Jesus? No. Paul? No. John? No. Peter?
@@timspangler2154 Then explain the positive effects: I know Jesus better, follow God with increased devotion, am more of an evangelist now than I was, read the Bible more than I did, am less judgmental, more loving, and more self-sacrificial than I was before, and have seen more miracles happen than I did before.
Interestingly, we don't bat an eye at someone calling himself 'Reformed' or 'Lutheran' or 'Pentecostal', but as soon as someone asks Mary to pray to Jesus for him, suddenly we ask, 'Where is that in the Bible?' Don't you find that just a bit odd?

@@timspangler2154 Thank you, Tim. I hope that you are doing so, as well. Probably for me the most important lesson of the Rosary is that the Spirit *must* pray my prayers with and for me, because I get them wrong, and the Spirit *will* pray my prayers for me because God is love. Once I thought like the garden-variety evangelical (because I was one), that my words had to be right. I didn't know just how much God loves me. I probably still don't, but I think I know it a bit more, for the Rosary is very different from my prayers before, yet, like the Jerusalem Council who heard of the Greeks accepting Christ without first becoming Jews and so decided that circumcision was not necessary, the increase in my spiritual life, my witness, my discipline, and my trust in God has told me that I had misjudged the Rosary for many years. As long as I pray, the Spirit will pray with and for me, and my prayers will be effective, especially in changing me. The Rosary is a long-tested way of doing this, and because it points me to God and to Christ, it works in me.
I could only find this out by trusting God and trying it for myself. I gave it two years; I continue on with it. There is light here.

SO Much in this! Perspective on the Trinity, praying metaphysically IN the Holy Spirit with the Father and Son. The Mass as a community prayer with the mystical body of the Church. As someone in the RCIA process, this brought a lot of things together for me. Bishop Barron and the Word on Fire team, you have been a huge part of my conversion and growth as a Christian. Hey. 😊 I always thought I had gotten into a tendency to greet those I'm happy to see with, from my youth growing up in Chicago.
A metaphor which I really like for intercessory prayer is that of a lens held up to the sunlight. A lens in daylight doesn't change the sun, but yet it does change the interaction of the sun with the world; secondary causation means that we don't change God, but we change the world's relationship to God through prayer. (There's also a curious metaphor in there for sin in holding up something which casts a shadow-which like sin looks like it has a shape and therefore a substance, but doesn't.)

So if I were to pray to God for someone else to be healed, how exactly does your metaphor work there? How is "changing the world's relationship to God through prayer" going to make that sick or injured person better?

@@MissingTheMark I was asking for how your metaphor would apply to praying for another person. If your answer is that someone who prays can channel God's love into healing, I'd be curious to hear what you mean by this. Are you saying the one doing the praying and channeling is the healer?
One thing I have always remembered from bishop baron: he said don’t worry about asking god and asking often. Just go ahead and ask all you want. At the time I was doing these adorations. I realized I can ask and ask until I was sick of it. Some how the whole idea of petition prayer was correct and honest but also amusing. I still think of what I was told.

Very enriching discussion. To the insights of the Good Bishop and Brandon I can only add a note regarding a subjective experience. I was in a bad accident many years ago, and had a near death experience. A number of spiritual phenomena occurred. One of them was being allowed by God to know who was praying for me, and in one case to actually be in the room where they were praying (several miles away from the hospital). I was grateful they were praying, and could feel the prayers as if they were being channeled through my being (can't explain). I realized their prayers were part of what was keeping me in this world. That frustrated me, because I did not want to stay here. God let me know in no uncertain terms that I was not going to die, as there were more things in store for me here. The really hard part to explain is that the prayers weren't influencing Him in the sense that he was undecided about how the episode should end. It was more the case that in His infinite awareness, He knew who would be praying and what for at that time, and from the beginning of Time, and had incorporated their spiritual petitions within His Providence. There is no such thing as a prayer unheard or unheeded. Each either incites Him to interrupt the otherwise normal course of events directly, OR is a thread that God has woven into the very fabric of existence such that our intentions have been ordained and infused into the very order of things. From a causality standpoint, the latter implies that the very ordering of everything in the Cosmos has been "rigged" in anticipation of our supplication. Please don't think that by typing such words I am pretending to actually understand what all of that means. I can't explain it; but I know it as certainly as I am breathing, and in the most intimate encounter I have ever had with God, I was, as a human being, literally terrified by the scope of His Perfect Awareness and Power. Between humans, such a gap in intelligence and potency would naturally lend itself to a form of either aloofness or indifference. NOT with this God: ALL prayers receive God's personal attention, so be careful what you pray for; His reply is certain, and for our good, in ways by which He gives us clues, but we cannot ever fully understand in this life.

I am Canadian and I have watched Dr. Petersen on The Agenda on TVO for years and have watched, and listened to Bishop Barron for years as well. QUESTION/COMMENT. Regarding prayer. I personally feel that prayer is more a relational (relationship w Our Lord). Just as we have a relationship with our spouses, the spousal relationship of my soul with the spouse of my soul. I perceive prayer where at times is listening and sharing ; at times, just in silence enjoying the Presence; times requesting help; doing things together. I perceive prayer where as “celebrating and acknowledging His Presence “, in all I do, constantly visiting and talking, or just recognizing His Presence.
To me saying praying is just a period of our time or a thing we do, it limits the profound immensity of what prayer should be. Just as if, I said my relationship w my souse is when, I do this or when, .... I truly saying prayers, Adoration, Mass, it’s only the entrance to the awareness in my day , life of His Presence, the beginning not the end. His invitation to walk with Him and He with me, ..... in all I do
in Him with Him for Him and through Him... . Again it’s a celebration of His Presence in my life , again is a relationship. That includes all that we call prayer and beyond. Bishop Barrón, am I extrapolating the meaning of prayer? However, I must admit that from my heart I see it as above mentioned.
God does not change, but our free will to change reality is always met with an answer.
Our will is touching other wills and our heart touches other hearts...
We can communicate with God, and so in practice we do communicate with the world, and it is dynamic, alive.
Great hearing about the Apostles and how we Christians pray, including Luke's recounting of Gabriel's words as per God's will that we specifically call the Hail Mary. Our shepherds should also know His sheep are grateful and also that we understand that while watching over, feeding, and guiding us, you have also been commanded to go fishing, too!

Also, I think I have a better understand of the catholic idea of praying to the saints now. Maybe prayer isn't necessarily a form of worship, but a ways of communicating to those who are in heaven? So you dont worship any saint, but more revere them like we would a marine, and so they are trustworthy to prayer on your behalf. If that's the case could we actually pray to send a message to a deceased relative? (Not that i'm trying to). I recently learned that the eastern orthodox view is that the dead are still a part of the church, so that would potentially make sense in their view as well (but i'm not 100% sure). Lastly, the warning that I've heard about praying to the saints is that they are like an integration of pagan gods into the church, since they often represent certain attributes of life.

Great talk (as always). Instinctively we all agree that God does not NEED our prayers, but Matthew 9:37-38 makes me wonder if this is always true.

I think that when we pray for others who are living, like a friend of mine who just went for an operation today and another who is in ccu (please pray for Kathy and Rosa, respectively) then they receive the Grace of God - perhaps it's as if they are praying themselves but we do it for them and so it doubles the Grace when we pray for others because it flows from us to them!!! But we can't get a living person a Plenary Indulgence because for that they have to turn their own heart to God and fervently pray and receive the Sacraments and earn that Indulgence. But we can give Indulgences to the souls of our beloved departed ones who are the Holy Souls in purgatory. One of my favorite prayers to do this is the Prayer to Jesus Christ Crucified which is very short, fast and simple and is a phenomenal way of sharing God's Grace instantly after receiving our Lord in the Holy Eucharist so it is possible every time you go to Holy Mass and all you have to do is attend Holy Mass and after receiving the Holy Eucharist say the Prayer to Jesus Christ Crucified along with an Our Father, Hail Mary and Glory Be in honor of our Holy Father (according to the Pieta Prayer Book). I also say prayers for our wonderful Pope Emeritus and all past Popes in order to multiply the Indulgences if possible! On any Friday during Lent, such as today, we can earn a soul in purgatory a Plenary Indulgence every time, otherwise it's only a partial indulgence but I always beg God for a Plenary Indulgence in case it helps!

There are many many quasi Christians I encounter daily, the say they are "Spiritual" and they believe in God. But they don't necessarily believe in living a life aligned with God, or church.
I always tell them the church is our recharging station so we can stay in communion with God in community. That we should always be in prayer both in community and personally, daily. Plus it helps us to be in communication with like minded people who share our faith.

Having experienced how a personal problem I prayed for was solved through a chain of amazing unexpected "coincidences" how about this:
God created an universe with fine- tuned physical constants so that life was posible. He is allknowing so He could make an extrem fine tuning where an intense prayer is correlated with a favour in form of coincidences, not suspending physical laws and preserving the free choice of every person of being materialistic or believing and loving Him.
Kindly supply the verifiable evidence that a "god created the universe." Thanks!!

I don't know if the universe has an eternal existence or not. I don't think the present laws of physics apply when the universe was much smaller than it is now.

Yes please! I have questions about some of Fr. Richard's theories about the Universal Christ (based on Franciscan mysticism) and I would love Bishop Barron to address them, as I trust Bishop's philosophical grounding very much.
Prayer is about the process and our relationship to God. Here and now issues (what we want) are only one aspect of prayer. Pray regularly (without ceasing) and watch how God starts working in your life. Do not limit how you pray. Pray as appropriate: adoration, confession, thanksgiving, supplication, etc. Pray off the cuff or pray the psalms or the Hail Mary or the Lords Prayer, etc. Start praying and get the process going and do not be afraid to change how you pray if it feels right.
In line with Bishop Barron I love Item 258 of the Catechism of the Catholic Church ..and one Holy Spirit "in" whom all things are. And that was quoted from Council of Constantinople II: DS 421.

A orayer is a wish. When I recite the 23rd Psalm I'm wishing. And each part of that wish is important. We all want a personal relationship with God, but their are few who are up to this. Abraham was one of the few who was able to take it to its limit.
I appreciate your willingness to share your thoughts. Alas, I found myself unable (unwilling?) to follow your reasoning. How, exactly, does responding to a petition entail God changing? Would his nature or character be changed? If so, how? Indeed, what sort of personal relationship can possibly exist if my actions elicit the same response no matter what I do? Questions like this flooded my mind as I listened. Perhaps the issue is omniscience? God would somehow have to change his mind or plans if he responded to our supplication/lack thereof. But that's not really how omniscience works, is it? If all or reality, past present and future, is simultaneously present to God's awareness there exists no before or after. The Father exists in the eternal present. So it feels like a category mistake to imagine him changing his mind. It also follows that imagining a response to prayer entailing such a change is a similar mistake.
I cannot pretend certainty about any of this. Your thinking has sparked my own and I'm grateful for that.

I recently opted to reply just once to social media threads that are important to me and let the pieces fall where they may. It has improved my mental health and less tempting to substitute social media for 1:1 personal communication.

I would have loved for him to mention Contemplative Prayer and Lectio Divina.
A US Cardinal (and many others I'm sure), suggest that everyone pray at least a half an hour a day, all at once or multiple sessions. If you are just too busy for that you need to start praying for 1 hour a day. ;>D
P.S. I loved the brief explanation of the Hail Mary. Like BB alluded to, there are volumes of information about this prayer if one wishes to dive further.

I found the parts of this talk re: prayers of petition to be confusing. And troubling. I had trouble following the train of thought, and now I find myself reluctant to pray for specific intentions. I would appreciate it sometime if you could clarify what you meant. Thank you for all you do.
