'Black Bart' was certainly a gentleman. The 'Wells Fargo Affair' was a matter of honor for the man who was strong-armed out of his future wealth. Wonder what his 'mine claim' ended up being worth vs his takings on the road.

A somewhat similar, if much less successful, 'Gentleman Robber' was William Allen 'Bill' Miner. maybe truly the 'Last of the Old Time Bandits' - a 46 year-long career in robbing & prison work with little rest in between.
His story been told often, if not always well. Hope you track him down and bring him back for us . . . he just about the only Robber we Canadians have to boast about and even he had to be imported

I recently sat on a flight next to the great grandson of Samuel Brannan, the California newspaper pioneer who first advertised the "Gold Rush". The grandson is a tennis instructor who resides in Dallas.
California is currently cutting off water supply to ranchers/farmers, claiming "drought". Imagine that.

I love the podcast! Just wanted to add that Black Bart actually lived outside of Decatur, Il in a little farming community called Warrensburg. I live outside of Warrensburg myself. A local entrepreneur-type has opened a Pumpkin Patch named in his honor near his family's old farm.

When my family lived in Mendocino county our house was within walking distance of Black Rock named after him because he hid behind behind it waiting to ambush an on coming stagecoach. I live in Butte county, 95969. After the Army, I cowboyd under Mt. Sanhedren, Mendocino County. My 1st wifes people, Frank &Peirce Azbil namer the mountain, and discovered Covelo, California 1850. The ranch i worked on under mt Sanhedren was and old fishing and hunting resort at the time Mr. BOLES was active. One of the cabin girls remembered his fancy shirts, and put him in the area, and helped convict him. There us a black bart trail road and his girl friend had a cabin there. End of story.

As a newbie to this whole Utoobie thing, I am catching up on things that have me binging up on your material. Your presentation is by far the best. Everyone else is like the dry and boring history teacher I had in high skewl (40 years ago!).
Anywho, is you want a real Henry rifle, you'll want it chambered in .44-40 not .44mag. The .44mag was introduced in 1955 so it wouldn't necessarily be, "authentic".
I'd also like to comment on the phrase, "Gun nut". I am a "Firearm Enthusiast". I believe you are one too! THANX!

When you get your subs up and start making a living at this TH-cam thing (if that's the route you're wanting go go, I mean.. the content is awesome and your channel will do nothing but grow), you should do some live videos and go to places like Deadwood (the Bullock Hotel and the Saloon #10), tombstone, Marysville (this is actually in Texas, north of dallas in my home county) ghost town, dexter (another abandoned town in my home county), Dodge City and Abilene Kansas, St. Louis (the gateway to the West), and just any place that has history, especially during the Old West. I think that would also help your channel grow tremendously. Also man (I might have asked this before, but maybe not), could you do a podcast on The Great Hanging of Gainesville, Texas event? It happened in 1862 in my hometown and is interesting as hell! It made the front page of newspapers all across America and even in the London Times! It was insane. Also, if you travel to my home county in the future, theres a memorial for the victims of the Great hanging of 1862. Also, here's a fun fact: Gainesville, Texas is the only town or city in America to annually honor medal of honor recipients. Theres also a memorial dedicated to every medal of honor recipient in United States military history.

So basically, Charles Boles bought a gold claim on a river, he then was approached by Wells and Fargo and they wanted to buy it from him and Charles refused, Five days later, his river dried up, he followed the stream up and found that somebody damned it up and rerouted the river, at that point he knew it was Wells Fargo so that’s why he had beef with them. My grandpa is the great great nephew of Charles and he told me the story.

It's even more of a shame that this man left his wife and children alone without security and protection, and a husband and father. It would appear to me that black Bart held the Wells Fargo company accountable for his loss of his mine oh, and apparently of his mind as well. It's a wonder one of his children didn't attempt to find him in the West, and act on their spitefulness the banding them. Evidently Mary reared those children under the protection of the Lord. And for the fact that she had a Bible and gave her husband one tells me that she did believe in the Lord God.
