- Wyatt Earp, Billy the Kid, Doc Holliday, Jesse James, Wild Bill Hickock - These are the names of legends. Names I think most people - even those with no interest in old west history - will find familiar. But for every one of these guys, there were a dozen others who were every bit as deadly and capable with a firearm, if not more so. Men who didn’t flinch in the face of death. Men who knew the smell of the black powder smoke and the crack of a bullet snapping past their heads.
Men who for whatever reason are largely lost to history. Or at the very least just not that well known. Men like Elfego Baca. The young store clerk who pinned on a fake mail order badge and single-handedly took on an overwhelming force of gunmen. The over 30-hour gunfight that ensued is considered, by some, to be the most lopsided of the wild west. All at the tender age of 19!
And don’t you worry your pretty little head, the rest of Elfego’s life was chock full of excitement as well. The man would go on to be tried several times for murder. Work as a sheriff, a lawyer, a detective, a district attorney, a prohibition-era speakeasy bouncer, dip his toes in the Mexican Revolution and even become a school superintendent. And yes, his life would inspire a Disney TV series not too long after his death. According to one biographer, Elfego Baca was "controversial. He drank too much; he talked too much; he had a weakness for wild women; he was often arrogant; and, of course, he showed no compunction about killing people.” And when it came to killing Elfego made no bones about it saying “If a man had it in mind to kill me, I made it my business to kill him first.” Sounds like the kinda guy we like around these parts! I stumbled across this man many years ago while reading about 'wild west' characters. I have always wanted to make a really good movie about him in, concentrating on his younger days. What a courageous man. He ranks up there with all the truly great men of the west.

Bro ty for this/ I am working on a script for Elfego Baca. Found out about him ten years ago when my uncle showed me the Disney episodes. I've made it my life's work to research Mr. Baca and you are spot on my friend. Only his father did not kill a prominent member of Belen. He killed two thugs also named Baca but hit a prominent member of Belen in the nose and was charged for the murder of the two thugs. Then Elfego broke him out of a Los Lunas jail on the Santa Ana day of celebration.
I remember that Disney show (I'm in my '70s). It aired around the same time as Zorro and Davy Crockett. I remember the shootout scene but that is about all I remember about the show. Thanks for the upload. He sounds like a pretty chill dude.

The 9 Lives of Elfego Baca aired from when I was 6 'till II was 10! I did watch it faithfully! I have a friend who lives in Socorro NM, whom my wife and I visited a few years back!

What a colourful character! Never found such characters and actions in other countries. Truly unique. Maybe guns and the ready use of such, made the West what it was. Good listening.

Most Texans also don't know or ignore the fact that it was overwhelmingly tejanos who fought against Mexico for statehood....European Americans only made up maybe 12 to 15% of the Texas independence movement

Never heard of elfego Baca until last week and now I've watched and listened to something about him twice in the last week the first on a western show called to Wild West Chronicles about Bat Masterson reporting days and last week's episode with about El fago Baka and Frisco shootout
Well done! And for the record us Spanish/Mexican Americans were not helpless. The Slaughters were Texans who tried to move in on our land. My greatgrandfather, Melquides Aragon was already there with his herds of sheep when the Slaughters tried to move in with their cattle. The ranch stayed in our family until my cousins sold it about 15 years ago. The only trace of the Slaughters left on the ranchwas a mountain by the name of Slaughter Mesa. Yes, he told his family not to trust the Tejanos because they were gentes malosos con ojos adults. (Bad people with blue eyes). Of course some of us Huspanics were and are blue eyed too.
Hispanics of NM are a special breed with many having Jewish roots. To call them Mexican is not accurate as they themselves differentiated between themselves and Mexicans who were from down south. I appreciated your informative post. Elfego Baca is buried at sunset cemetery in abq near my grandfather who was from Reserve himself.
I well remember the Disney series featuring Loggia as Elfego Baca. Hoaky as all get out now that I look back on it, but at the time it was a lot of fun for a small Georgia farm boy. Disney also made a series "Texas John Slaughter" with, I believe, Tom Tryon as Slaughter.

I read about this man years ago. He taught Billy the kid how to handle a pistol, went up against over 100 slaughter ranch hands and lived thru it.
Damn, this isnt even the 1st time ive watched this video but man, between your sense of humor and flinging around various words such as "ignant" (a life long friend i knew since age 5 would always say something to me like "what is ya Billy Ray, IGNANT!??" (Billy Ray was a nickname he gave me because of the ford LTD i drove at the time Gone in 60 seconds came out lol!).
Im starting to think youre my brother from another mother! A younger brother at least! Your videos i find so compelling to watch that im afraid to look if i dont have time to watch it or whatever it was i was supposed to have been doing at that time just is going to come in a late 2nd!!! A common Mexican revolution era rifle was the short barrelled 7x57,like this one of his in the picture,of Pancho Villas?(A friend tried to once sell me one of those short ones from Mexico,but I refused as it had the serial number filed off).San Fransisco area is nice cattle country plus mountain country with elk&bighorn sheep.Its in western New Mexico.
I worked 9months in Socorro in 92&really enjoyed it there.Its a very old spanish name as you found.
I recall hearing of the movie on him but cannot seeing it.

I think the rifle he’s holding in a Mauser carbine in 7x57. My impression is Mexico of that revolutionary era was full up on .30-30 American made rifles and Mexican made or imported Mausers. Mexico produced high quality Mauser rifles up to the 1950’s.

I first found out about Elfego Baca when I saw it on television during the mid-1960's and somewhere I have the DVD set that has some episodes of this mini-series. I even have a reprint of Baca's autobiography. interesting fellow.

I once read that convicted and now serving time, former Los Angeles sheriff Lee Baca is a descendant of Elfego Baca.
I read about Elfego Baca years ago. Like many others I seen the Disney program, in the late 50’s. I re@lly like it. I went to the library in Muskegon, Michigan. Great library, I never subscribed to any western magazine. I didn’t think they were very reliable. I read the Captain , last man standing with a cavalry saber in his hand. I knew when I was ten years old, I knew this wasn’t true. The Indians had know idea they were fighting General Custer. True west is about as reliable as the History Channel on TV. So sad too bad!

Really good video keep up the good work one last thing however you mentioned actors who are not Hispanic playing Hispanics you Frank Silvera who played Don Sebastian Montoya and I just saw him play a Hispanic outlaw who helped Artemus Gordon and James West in Wild Wild West episode and he was from Jamaica and don't get me started on the lily-white people of which I happen to be one who played Native Americans for a long time until they started using real-life Native American t o play the parts
He also played the Vaquero in Hombre remember " hey, Hombre! If you want de woman you better hurry" and " At least I'd like to know his name " He was Jamaican? damn that's why he had the strangest Mexican accent I had ever heard.

I was a teenager 😂 and then my older brother who 65 sent me a text message about four years ago well I was going through my divorce 🙄 and I looked at some of those old text messages tonight from my older brother and it’s pretty cool 😎
I was a kid in high school when that Disney series on Elfego Baca was aired. I can never forget it. My stepdad had just got out of Joliet (prison) and had promised my Mom, two brothers nd me to take us to our first drive in. He used this series on Elfego to stay home and watch TV instead. I'm 76. I didn't go to a drive in until I was married. Black folks didn't go to drive in movies in Illinois during the '50's nor 60's. Racism. If we did we would get our asses kicked by the 'white folks.'
