- Today, we’ll follow the Lewis and Clark Expedition as they return to civilization. We’ll also discuss the lives of a few key figures post-expedition. Whatever happened to Sacagawea? Is it true she lived to be an old woman? What about her son, Pomp? How about George Drouillard? Finally, we’ll examine the mysterious death of Captain Meriwether Lewis. #wildwest #history #ushistory

Make sure you turn on notifications for next week’s video on John Colter!
This subject has been unsettled in my thinking.
000
I learned so much from this series.
I’m glad to hear it
Officially my favorite channel
Too kind!
@@WildWestExtravaganza hey its been bugging me since I heard you say it. Did you intentionally mispronounce Height & Ashbury?? I can remember what you where talking about now lol.
Josh rules! 🤠
Another great telling. Also nice to see the “intensive purposes” was cleared up. Now I know it’s “in tents and porpoises.”
Someday I’m going to binge all these stories while I’m driving the work truck. Thx.
😂 I thought so too
Haha exactly
Intents. and purposes. Np
As someone who works with the tribes on the High Plains as an archaeologist, I totally understand Mr. Lewis not wanting to come back east to 'civilization'.
LFG! This has been a dope series, bitter sweet to be finishing this finale but I'm all jacked up for the John Colter story!
Let’s gooooo
That’s a hell of an ending for a grand man like Lewis. He is one of my favorite figures in American history! Rest in peace, Sir!
Thanks for recommending Undaunted Courage, as a huge L&C nerd I’ve really been loving it. And idk about the true fate of Sacagawea, but I did take the opportunity to visit the grave, real or not, when passing through the Wind River Reservation years ago, just on the off chance that telling is the truth. What an amazing woman. The L&C Expedition is one of America’s greatest stories, if not the actual greatest. Totally fascinating, thanks for the episodes.
Thanks for listening!
I’ve read it 3 times
Josh is Certainly No Slouch at this job. The amazing thing is that he's a Historian who is Completely "Self taught", and I daresay he'd Lay lots of "Real Historians", with degrees and credentials longer than Both Arms, In The Shade, Easily.
Disregard his Knowledge, Talent and Ability, at your Peril.
I consider myself a Shade Tree Historian(Only about people and subjects that interest me) who is pretty Savvy about certain Old Folks In History, at Certain Times, but when Josh deals with these times and people I Very Rarely leave without having learned more than one bit of knowledge that I had overlooked, Ignored, or simply Did Not Know. That's why I look forward to his New Talks/Broadcasts/Vlogs/Blogs/Whatever
I’m a rank amateur but I thank you

The Shoshoni are correct. The Wind River Agency is the place. No one has a better, credible explanation of the resting place of Sacagawea. It will be nice to sort of circle back to where i first learned of Your storytelling Josh.
The Bloody Beaver. Thanks again for everything You do, Best Wishes to You, Your Family and Friends.
Thanks! Lot of questions still remaining, I think. Like how come she didn’t join her actual band at the Lemhi reservation in Idaho?
@@WildWestExtravaganza
Yes, lots of unanswered questions.
To offer an answer this one of Your.
Infirmity after years away, south with the other tribes ? Welcomed by relatives in the Wind Rivers ? We'll never know but who else has a credible story of where She is ?
Hasta luego Josh.
It is so hard to take Lewis' mental state after being such a monumental hero.
Life was largely terrible back then. It was dirty, harsh, and slow. Many of us would end up the same.
My daughters get so upset when he doesn't roll the R's on extravaganza..
Ah, I'm sorry! I'll try to next time
Just be grateful they’re not listening to him on eastbound and down
Sweet Little thing
bless her heart
Tell them to get off their high horses
I have jammed through your entire catalog and can't get enough! Im always looking forward to new material. Keep up the good work Josh!
Thank you
I was under the impression that Jean Baptiste died in the area around Adrian, Oregon. There is an historical marker along the highway near my home that marks the spot. It is in the Owhyee River proximity. Watch your top knot. Keep up the good work! I wish my history lessons in school were as intresting as your lectures. Aaron Plain
Yes, that appears to be correct. Did I say Nevada? The place he apparently got soaked was where Jordan Creek meets the Owyhee, in what’s now Oregon. Made it to Inskip station where he died.
Yep. Been there (Danner, OR).
My comment and like disappeared? I'll do it again 😂 I'm close to Hohenwald and visited the site, that town tells a very convincing "real" version. The bluff where they got him is gorgeous, government definitely did it! Great episode Josh and can't wait for JC!
This is one of the best channels I've seen lately. Only wish there were no ads so I could listen while I go to sleep.. 😢
You’re in luck because there are multiple ways to listen ad free
@@WildWestExtravaganza usually I just FF to the end, hit the round arrow and it starts over ad free but TH-cam took away my little toy.
I'd rather watch 5 ads in the beginning.
What's your plan?
You can subscribe to TH-cam. I did recently and it’s def worth it. No ads and I get YT Music. Outside of TH-cam, all of my episodes are ad free on Patreon and Into History
@@WildWestExtravaganza ok.
Mercury poisoning can be horrific. I am not sure if the symptoms are the same but a scientist was poisoned when a drop of a form of mercury that bypasses gloves skin etcetera planted on her glove. At first she was fine but over the next few months she kept experiencing worse and worse neurological disorders. Can you please control of her body lose the ability to walk to have migraines and see white flashes. When they figured out what it was they tried to treat her and removed the Mercury but there was too much and it was already in her brain. So over the next couple of months basically her brain says short-circuited more and more. At the end she wouldn't have been her really as her entire brain short-circuited. She'd have just seen static or random colors but you wouldn't have really seen it because her optical cortex wouldn't have functioned anymore the same with her hearing. Other than dying of extreme radiation exposure it's the most horrific death I can think of. A brilliant man whose mind literally started short-circuiting
Awesome job!
Thanks!
Pomp’s grave is well marked a quarter mile off the state hwy 95. Between Rome and Jordan Valley, Oregon. Not in northern Nevada
Yep
I have always felt manic depression is a much better name for this contition than bipolar. Lewis finally succumbed to this killer. His end was a great tragedy, but his great contribution to the Expedition is his legacy.
I assume it was a foreigner that complained about your diction. Well this old Limey can understand you well enough so don't change a thing.
Another great series, I'd not heard of the death of Lewis before, not one I'd wish on many people.
Meriwether lewis and Kermit Roosevelt had something in common other than suicide. Both men had mental problems but both of them kept it together when it really mattered. Lewis with the Corp of Discovery and Roosevelt when his Father, Teddy was extremely sick with infection when they both traveled and were lost in the Amazon jungle. A great read is the book “River of doubt”
if you visit Monticello's, there in Jefferson's entry is one of the maps written in drawn by Lewis and Clark
Very cool
Once again an awesome entertaining series. Thanks Josh!!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Looking forward to hearing about John Colter👍🙏🏴☠️🍁,another fine series well enjoyed thanks Josh🪨
Glad you enjoyed it
Loving thst I found you on TH-cam. This makes the shifts go so much better on a forklift loading up shingles
Glad you enjoy it!
another great video. it's sad think about such strong men being at the mercy of a mental health issue when not confronted with external chaos. i wonder how many great soldiers and explorers were afflicted like this but to some degree drew strength from it in the face of adversity.
Thanks Josh ever so much! This has been an Epic series. And thanks for ALL the WORK you do to keep a bunch of us elder folk entertained. I'm sure there are younger knowledge seekers who listen and learn. I Prefer to believe you are doing all this for us old fogies! Nah just Joshin' you there... get it? Really, I'm much obliged. I keep my notifications set to not miss anything from The Wild West Extrrrravaganza!!
I always heard he stopped at a murder hostel.
Very enjoyable the whole series
Gracias
Just subscribed and awesome channel. I was wondering if you done a piece on Clay Allison..?
Thanks! I did one on Allison a very long time ago but it’s no longer on the public feed (it wasn’t very good). I’m planning on redoing it soon, though.
Thanks for another great one. Appreciate your hard work
Thank you!
I sincerely miss your old outro with the final word being a humorous tiny snip.
It’s still there on podcast players just not TH-cam
Nice Job Josh , I really enjoyed this series.
Glad to hear it!
Currently re-reading "Sacajawea" by Anna Lee Waldo. Historical fiction based on the journals.
I just finished the last cd on Steven Ambrose audio book driving🚛 through Oklahoma and after enjoying the whole adventure throughout I’m almost ashamed to say it brought a tear to my eye 😢 on Lewis ending. As I was listening it reminded me he was living like a modern day rock star at the end, anyway at least Clark had success.thnx ✍🏻
Good info Josh!
-Lou
Thanks Lou
Excellent series. Thank you. Keep on.
Thanks, will do
Thanks Josh! Keep 'em comin
another great one, thanks Josh.
Thanks Randy
Love the channel
Thanks James!
This was truly, an excellent adventure . Thank you
My pleasure!
Josh, you will be remembered as "The G.O.A.T of history""...but that's not gonna happen anytime soon. So for now we will just call you " El badass of times long gone"..( means fighting chicken)😂😂.
Thank you for the many hours spent in research just to entertain us (we're not worthy) for a few minutes! Thank you!
I’m a dummy with a microphone
Thank you
Thank YOU
Love the channel. It is great work and I love the fresh color commentary. I have begun sharing links to friends and family.
Once again keep it going. Love the shows.
sounds like that "putrid beaver" was to be avoided! 😧
Cool stuff.
Gracias
Let's go!!
Come on!
@@WildWestExtravaganza I love this podcast and you do a great job.
Again well said Josh 💯🤙
Gracias
So since u covered mr Dallas and it a lil off topic. I got a suggestion for a off topic episode. I know I would love to know your take on the legend smokey yunick.
Hawaiians In the old west?? Lol hell, we were the first cowboys!! Our tradition long predates the Wild West itself. We paniolo are the original cowboys. I have met and worked with some of the most amazing cowboys. Most have passed on now and they will not be replaced. Their world is disappearing.
First I like and than I watch
Heck yeah
I hope she got back home to rest. ❤🥲
I love Lewis and Clark I have
Hell yes!
Josh rules!
Like another said, I learned alot ❤ don'tike Clarke 😅
Putrid fever! 🤢
Vaya con dios, Muchacho
Why you aim for your head, not your torso. But I'm no expert on suicide, having tried it many times. ha
I was thinking siphilus
why cuss ?
Why not cuss?
Do you all believe this story.....
Do you? Tell me why not
I just ask the elders they say no... is it believable I guess to those willing to have faith
Also i know of a few different companies that were on some digs that say it's nearly impossible to identify who's camp is which. Not enough mercury scat
I wonder, and am good with never knowing, just how many Famous/Infamous Old Timers "Ain't Buried, where they're said to be Buried".
Billy The Kid?, Doc Holliday?, Everybody in Toombstone's Boot Hill?, Johnny Ringo, and Countless Others, that I currently Disremember.
Yep, I imagine it's quiet a few. However, I will say that David G. Thomas - in his book Billy the Kid's Grave - makes a very compelling argument that the Kid is indeed buried under his marker.
Really enjoyed this series. Couldn't help but wonder while I was listening to this episode the Depression Era Gangster Al Capone had conversations with himself and other odd behaviors while suffering from syphilis, I wonder if it was possible that Meriwether Lewis was suffering from the same thing?
Could be
Good video.
Thanks
Imho. Meriwether Lewis killed himself. It was noted by Jefferson that he had "depressions of the mind". It ran in the family, Lewis's father suffered the same thing and he had a brother committed to a mental institution. I am thinking Manic Depressive/BiPolar. Super intelligent and capable one minute then sitting in a corner not able to get up the next. The drugs and alcohol didn't help. I know he was stressed about debt and not getting the journals done in time.
Yep, agreed
