    The tenth of February marks the 300 years anniversary of the death of Bartholomew Roberts, purportedly the greatest pirate of his age. Nowadays we call him "Black Bart", but back then he was known simply as "The Great Pyrate". With his powerful flagship and the usage of fear tactics, he was able to force hundreds of ships into submission, and terrify entire colonies. However, Bart was far from a pleasant character, though his antics did often drift towards the eccentric, including his comical hatred of almost everyone he met...

    Here's my pirate meme :
    James Skyrme (one of Bartholomew Roberts' commanders) : I FOUND TEA IN MY RUM ! 😧
    Bartholomew Roberts : That's not surprising.
    James Skyrme : Why ?🤨
    Bartholomew Roberts (Now staring at him with a creepy look) : I FOUND RUM IN MY TEA !!!!! 👿

    For a man that hated everyone, he sure loved to name ships after Royal Fortune.

    • @user-fe2lr5jw4i
      @user-fe2lr5jw4i ปีที่แล้ว +20

      He was making a statement about class. At the time most ships were named HMS Name or Her/His Majesty’s Ship Name. Meaning they were under the rules and law of the country’s monarchy even at sea. Naming his ships “royal” he was saying the Pirates were sovereign and under only their own law. Roberts thought of himself as royalty.

    I'm Welsh and my surname is Roberts. My grandfather always used to say that we were related to Bartholomew Roberts. Then not too long ago he got really big into those Ancestry websites, as a hobby, and managed to get back as far as the very early 1700's. Turns out the Roberts side of the family were actually living Pembrokeshire at that time, so it could very well be true. Would love to know for sure!

      During the time of John Bartholomew Robert, who later added the s, as many did back then, there were 6 families with the surname Roberts in the area of Little Newcastle. I did extensive research back in 2002-5 & would love to compare notes with you. My family, the Howells of letterston, twice married into his family. I guess the Howell women of Letterston, fancied the Robert men. One was Hanna Howell married Robert Roberts of Little Newcastle, with the key is George Robert being John's father. I have a list of his brothers & one of his brother's wills, with many heirs listed.

    Walter Kennedy, the guy who stole the Royal Rover, immediately started sailing back to Ireland, having given up piracy. However, they ended up in Scotland by accident. After causing a scene in every town they visited, part of the crew was arrested and hanged. Kennedy himself owned a brothel in Deptford, but got arrested for stealing from his own prostitutes. In prison, he was recognized as a pirate and hanged on July 21 1721.

      Shire basically means something like state in the English context, you won't find settlements with it in their name rather it is the region of Britain that is being referred to. For example Cambridgeshire is a county (or region, presumably the word comes from the title of count but these days it has little significance beyond telling other brits the general area you come from) while Cambridge is its most prominent city and what it's named after, likewise with Yorkshire and York and a good number of other counties, words that turn up in settlement names are things like ford, ham and ton, all of which meant things in anglo-saxon, old english, norman, norse, etc, back when people came up with them, shire like ford and unlike most of the others still has a recognisable meaning in modern English and thus using it in place names is very jarring and will immediately be picked up by people living in the British isles.

    I'm really enjoying your videos, but I find your choice of music distracting. I honestly think that nothing would be lost if you didn't use music at all. I'd really like to know what are the pictures that you use, some of them are fascinating - a shame that a few of them are such low resolution though. Sorry to leave such a critical comment, I don't mean to give a negative impression of my opinion - I really think you do a great job and I'm grateful that your videos are here! :)

      A French fishing shallop of the period was a 3-masted ship. Nonetheless, it is incorrect to say he captured them. He record of nigh on 500 ships where not merely captured vessels, but also included many that were burnt &/or sunk. In the case of those in Trepassey, he sunk them out of anger brought on by the cowardly behaviour in the town that actually began when Admiral Babridge deserted his ship, the Bideford Merchant, without firing a single shot. And nit only did he desert, he was the first to run like a rabbit.

    At the same time Sit Tomas Thew returned
    from Linertatia. Libertatia being on the

    Thew drank with the founding fathers in Sam Adam's Tavern.

    I mainly listen to your content rther than watch, as i become too distracted by the wonderful imagery you display in your videos. So therefore, by listening I gain more of the knowledge you provide. However, As integeal as music is as part of my life, i have a ver hard time focusing on the information you provide. I would never tell someone how to make content(as I have no clue how to do so myself...), but if you could possibly make the music i your videos... perhaps a wee bit less boisterous(I use ths term loosely, perhaps a more suitable word would be; flambouyant(Yes, I am aware i might've misspelled that, my attention span and brain isnt quite what it used to be.) it would be greatly appreciate.
