  • Well this one has been a long time coming! I last rode the R1200RS about 3 years ago, I loved the bike and so I was very interested to ride the new improved 2019 version with BMW's new "Shiftcam" technology and the brilliant TFT that BMW do. For some reason it has taken ages for BMW to make the RS available despite announcing it back in November, anyway it's here in dealers now, has it been worth the wait?

Another good review TMF! The RS has always been a great bike. I remember years ago one of the bike mags used to test bikes on a big loop taking in motorways, A & B-roads and town, and the RS was the fastest around that loop - its a proper real-world sports bike.

Let me just say this in plain English. Your videos (all of them!) are first class. Articulate and perfectly crafted/produced. When I listen to your explanations of the feedback you get from riding various bikes it's the closest I can find to actually riding the bike myself. I've given you a thumbs up and subscribed to your channel. I wish you well and thanks for all of your professional reviews, sir. May God bless you, friend. 😊

Excellent review, I do have a R1200rs and nothing to fault after a year. Your only noted comments which I was hoping you would mention: I've fitted bar raisers (£25 from China), and an addition wind deflector on the standard screen, works perfect. Also moved the satnav to above the TFT (on this bike) so you don't look down. Still happy with current bike.

Hello Missenden, many thx for all your videos and reviews, tours and all that. It is a pleasure too look at your videos. I was in the market for one of those bikes, GS, RS, Tiger, and so on. But today i was riding the Tiger 1200 and loved it. Weight are all the same in my opinion, 20kg more or less are no problem as soon as you ride 3 kmh. So i selled my KTM 1290 Super Adventure and buyed my new Tiger :). Next year, i will make a ride to england and scotland with my tiger. Thx again for all you do, you are a cool person and since i see your videos since about 2.5 years, my english has gotten better and better. Stay tuned and stay always on the bike. Coming back after many years to biking had my heart set on an RT as I love the boxer engine but tried to move one around last week on the forcourt and like the GS I found it too heavy. Test rode the R1250R and great handling bike and easier to manouver but too naked for me and even the salesman said the screens are ineffective. I never thought about the RS as it looked too much like a sporting riding position but if the bar risers work this could be all boxes ticked. Great review as always Mr Flyer, thanks.

The RS was up for consideration along with the RT and the Multistrada; so thanks TMF for this review I think you’ve helped me reach the right decision to plump for the RS. I think it’s the least expensive of the three to boot! 👍🏻

Interesting that you found the screen worked so well. I tried the 1200RS a few years ago, I'm about the same size as you, and with the screen in the low position I felt a lot of wind from shoulders up, in the high position I had terrible buffeting around 80, which totally put me off the bike. And although the weight of the bike dissapears once moving, I found it really noticeable with the lower bars when trying to wheel it back into a parking space, much harder than on an adventure bike.

This is a bike that I like. Good looking, good specs, screen, good for touring. Knee angle could be less. The RT has a better knee angle, better screen and weather protection, good for touring but is heavier.
Both bikes are on my next bike list. First ride all the bikes on the list and then make a choice. Biggest problem for my next bike: money🙄

Great bike, might try one next time. You can raise the bars by fitting the bars from the R model or bar risers such as Rox, there’s also plenty of alternative screens. Certainly easier to handle than my 1250GSA, great bike but a bit tall even on my low suspension setting.

Mr. Flyer- This machine strikes me as likely the best road bike available (I just got the GS though for those times when the road turns to dirt). I still enjoy my 1981 R100RS; I note that there seem to have been some changes made for 2019. One thing that the old airhead has as an advantage over the new bike is the absolutely splendid fairing, and I always wonder why BMW stopped using this design as its weather protection is so good. Thanks for another fine review! Bob

What an utterly splendid machine! - to my eyes, quite the nicest, most aesthetically pleasing and balanced looking of the BMW's you've recently reviewed; thinking in particular of the R1250GS,/GS Adventure, the R1250RT, and the K1600GT
The question you raised - if you never went off road, why would you buy a GS over the RS, is a very pertinent one.
Here in Australia, the GS Adventure is the biggest selling BMW by numbers, just edging ahead of the 'standard' GS, and with the RT coming in third place.
Having spoken to a number of GS/GSA riders, a lot of them don't take them off road because of the weight, the increased chance of a fall, and commensurate cost of repairs for such expensive machines if they were dropped and damaged.
But, if like me, off road was to mean nothing more serious than an unmade road, with small stones over dirt etc, then most of the BMW road bikes should handle that quite easily with care and caution. Yes, the GS's will handle it better, but for the perhaps 10% of the time you might go on an unmade road, you are making compromises to the handling of the bike for it's off road capabilities, to the other 90% of the time you are on regular roads, where arguably an RT or RS is the better balanced machine for road work.
Whilst the GSA sits at the top of the adventure model tree, both the R1250RS and R1250RT have the K1600GT and K1600GTL respectively, above them in terms of the super smooth six - ideal for very long touring distances on regular roads - but at the penalty of a lot more weight and cost.
If you only went on the odd unmade road - say down to a campsite, - and did mainly day tours with the odd multi-day long distance tour thrown in, the R1250RS looks to be almost the perfect bike in the BMW range, bar perhaps the heavier, more powerful K1600GT - certainly under such usage needs, I would question the need? for a GS/GSA.
It has plenty of comfort in terms of it's ergonomics, excellent wind protection without making you feel so sheltered that you're not riding a motorbike anymore, luggage options for touring, and inspiring handling and performance.
And, for a BMW, it gets away from that Charlie and Ewan around the world, or Mr Policeman on his RT look, and presents a really classy, understated and very stylish motorcycle.indeed.
Loved the review, and really liked the bike - it might live in the shade of the GS re the globe trotting image, but betters the pipe and slippers image of the RT, or the bulk and weight of the K1600GT, and whilst not a trendy 'retro' machine, to my eyes is just a superb looking and finished machine that one could be very proud to own.

Edward Barker I agree re the GS image perception. How do you find your new RS after owning a GS? I think the all around practicality and go anywhere abilities of the GS is part of the appeal, even if not always used. And of course with a very upright and relaxed riding position, a very comfortable bike. But the RT offers even more comfort, and the RS is even sportier - but without being uncomfortable - than a GS, hence my thoughts about the RT & RS being better for the road overall than a GS if one never intended to take advantage of the GS’s off road abilities.

One thing I didn't hear you mention or maybe I just missed it, how much has the fuel economy changed? I have 10k miles on my '17 RS and the smaller tank is absolutely not a problem...I get to fill up every 200 miles and it religiously takes 4.2 gallons of fuel (that's 16 liters every 320km). You're dead on about the weight on the wrists, but as you said if you're coming from a sports bike this thing is extremely comfortable and also a really practical commuter if you put the luggage on it. I can easily do the 150 mile ride to Atlanta and come back the same day with no fatigue what so ever. Great review, love your channel!

Really nice bike but for me the S1000XR is on another level in terms of all round performance and function. Can’t wait for the new model of that in the coming years. I have the 2019 Triple Black XR and have test riden the above 1250RS above. Just can’t ignore that XR performance I’m sorry. Great review as always. 👍

Was thinking about an RT, but I agree the front does look a bit bulbous. I was really impressed with the TFT screen in that bright sunlight. Thanks TMF.

The advantage of an electrical screen outweighs the slight extra weight. One finger adjustment to suit all conditions.

The weight on wrists is an issue for me but I have checked and there are enough bar risers around 40mls up and 20mls back, apart from that I love the bike, good review and thanks

Great, long awaited review. 👍 I really like the new Rs and currently the only bike that could tempt me out of my R1200RT in the future. So much better looking, especially at the front, compared to the previous machine. I noticed the bike comes with Z8 Interacts which are a great tyre and better feel than the 01's. Nice colour, was that Carbon black ? Also is the screen adjustable ? Cant believe the temperatures in the Uk recently....

This is the dark blue one...and yes the screen is manually adjustable - it was fully up in this review...

Great review with crisp clear view and sound. Excellent. It's a great bike. I had a ride two weeks ago and was really excited. Being dedicated to asphalt riding I just think of switching my adventure bike for one of these. They'll be excellent for touring. How would you compare it to the Yammie FJR 1300 ? I'd go emotionally for the beemer. Thanks for the show. 👍😀

Tough one - Id have to ride both again to be sure, the Yammie is turbine smooth but the BMW technically superior I think...

Excellent review - as usual. I sold my 1200RS two years ago and now ride an MT09 but I do love BMWs. I am not into touring (a trip to italy with temps upto 36C put me off.) But I really do like the look of this machine and as my son is a BMW motorcycle technician, I should get a good 'staff' price.

The BMW R LC series are just awesome bikes and thankfully they keep them all in the lineup. I chose the R for the flexibility of having a naked bike and being able to add the luggage and screen when I tour but was indeed tempted by the RS.

I picked mine up for au$26k approximately £13k. In Australia the exclusive also comes with rear luggage rack and the chrome exhaust is standard.
It's never too hot to ride, 42° not uncommon over here 😉

Just had a test ride on this machine, you are correct, it is quick, looks stunning and more sport than tourer, it should sell well, but not for me, now too used to the R1200 GS TE and Ultraglide Classic, comfort is the watchword now for us two oldies>
