Such great, comprehensive and informative bike reviews! These reviews are so helpful in cutting through the marketing BS and actually offering an informed opinion. Many more to come, I hope.
Being in Australia, I can’t begin to express how awesome it is that your video’s drop just as I’m finishing work for the day. Thank you Mr Flyer, thank you so much 😊
I love your reviews. I want them all. I have a 2018 GS Adventure here in the USA and a Yamaha T700 which I keep in France, to tour Europe with (so far). I am transported to a higher realm when I’m sailing or riding my motorcycle. I’m 75. The older boy across the street had a motorcycle. I hero-worshipped him. I couldn’t wait to grow up to ride motorcycles! I hope I can ride them until I no longer want to and I cannot imagine that.
I would keep this bike in my bedroom, to wake every morning and savor its quality. If only the wife shared my appreciation of the engineering excellence. So when I move to a house with a 5-car garage, this machine will be my special weekend tourer, alongside my everyday GS and probably a 600cc Superscoot for shopping. Sadly, these dreams are as likely to come true as I will win the Lotto this weekend. But if I did, I would just have to have this magnificent dream machine. At least I got an armchair ride today, thanks Andy.
I used to own the 1200RS and have recently taken the 1250 for a test ride. There are a few things it still needs...Rear hugger .. change the position of the satnav as it's going to get blocked if you have a tank bag fitted. And bar risers, on long distances I used to get shoulder ache. Apart from those things it's an excellent bike.
For interest, I'm 5'10'' and rode the previous model RS. Great bike but had switch to GS due to the cramped leg tuck, overweight on hands due to slight pitch forward and buffeting on helmet due to insufficient wind protection. Just too old to be "tucked up " on longer rides these days. Spot on review Sir!
Thank you so much from the US. I greatly appreciate the thorough and practical review. I am negotiating the purchase of an R1250RS at this very moment. I test drove a 2020 R1250R over the weekend and I was simply blown away by it. This will be my first new motorcycle in 36 years (1987 GSXR750).
Lane filtering is new in Oz and most car drivers take exception. They don't throw bottles - just pull into your way and block you off. Oops - nearly fell off. Sorry about that boot mark on your door!
As mentioned before MF - I have the same bike. I'm 6'1" and find it more comfortable than a GS! And I love the exhaust - but as we've said many times before - thank God we're all different! Great review. It is a great bike !
How'd you find the windscreen being a little taller than TMF? And also the range and handling (aka Twisties)? I've been really interested in one of these, as I'd quite like a sports tourer, however for the premium, I'm not sure how much better it is than a Tracer 900GT?
Sintjin Ansley - The build quality and fit and finish and overall feel of the BMW is far beyond that of Yamaha. Go ride the BMW and you will see what I mean.
@@sintjinansley6107 Although I'm taller than TMF I prefer the screen in the lower position. It's much quieter than in the higher position but of course you get more wind blast which actually I like - in the summer it keeps you cool and in the winter you get enough draft to stop your visor steaming up. This won't suit everybody which in some ways is why other people doing road tests can't really help you. Range is 230 miles approx. Great on bends, the suspension is Rolls Royce quality. Better quality overall in my opinion than Japenese bikes. My other bike is a Honda CB1000R 2008-17 model so I'm not biased towards BMW totally.
Mr. Flyer-A fine review of this beautifully blue painted bike! I compare it to my '81 R100RS and find some changes: mine has no electronic devices of any kind (no TV screen, ABS, electrical suspension, fuel injection) and fewer horses. But it does have the best fairing ever, much more lightness, an oil dipstick, a complete toolkit, and two (2) exhaust pipes as is proper for twin cylinder machines. In 38 years BMW has improved some things but left other good features behind, and it would be fun to see you review one of the older airhead BMW motorcycles.
Ha! Those '81s have the cool Mad Max fairings. Lovely. I have a '94 and I also just don't like the look of the new RS, it's just too sporty. A sports touring bike should look more of a touring bike rather than a large crutch rocket and I heard that same comment in other reviews as well. I am also holding onto mine and hoping they'll have a better look for the next gen, or just might end up getting an RT - even though I don't want a full touring bike. Thanks for the in-depth review Mr. Flyer!
I have an ST which is the previous generation but same concept. I removed the clip on bars and raised up the controls, installed a touring seat but left the pegs in stock position. Great Sports touring bike but not a touring bike. Fun to ride, not as powerful as the 1250 but not as heavy either. Great handling bike compared to the RT.
Love BMW i own the K1200RS with the flying brick station, 2001 reg and mint condition also the best bike I've owned and I've owned new ish bikes. Brilliant review Andy
I’ve had my 2016 1200-RS for the last 2 years & covered 14,500 miles, it’s never missed a beat - great all-rounder!! It is quite cramped though, easily fixed by getting the higher sports seat. Then you’ll need the bar risers to take the extra weight off your wrists... Also that standard fitted screen is totally useless on long trips/tours, I have two aftermarket screens to chose from of different heights, a tinted (more sporty looking) Puig - & a clear high/wide Givi screen. I have fitted a LeoVince exhaust to mine, but find it just too noisy for touring on, thankfully it’s a very easy/quick swap back to the standard exhaust, & visa versa! I’m toying with changing it (eventually) for the 1250rs, then swapping all my extras on to that... I won’t take mine to any BMW main dealer for servicing, with those stupidly high prices! I’ve found myself a “back street” BMW specialist who only charges £40 per hour (as opposed to £90 per hour) labour, much better mechanic too imo. 👍🏻
Surprised you didn't get much turbulent air off the screen as it doesn't look much different from the previous R1200RS. I ended up fitting a MRA Vario screen, that made a big difference. A rear (Puig) hugger also helps with rear crud fling. Should be standard on a sports tourer tbh. I always worried about BMW painted front engine case being directly in the firing line from stones and debris so fitted the excellent MachineArt Avant Guard (looks factory). The Akra sounds great. Just some ownership tips if you get one in you future.
After having the R1200rs which I too installed a MRA Vario screen. I now have the R1250rs I have on order a new MRA screen, because I to found too much buffeting and helmet noise with the factory screen.
The perfect bike for the ones 1) who do not want a GS(A) 2) want more protection than the R and 3) feel too 'young' for the RT. I still prefer the big allroad, but this one would come second.....oh, I think all boxers are terrible to clean.
After sitting on one, I immediately knew that bar risers were in order to get the weight off my wrists.Might go for this one after a proper test ride. Thanks TMF.👍👍
@@RobbieKiama I picked the RS over the XR. I've not ridden the new XR. Reason for the RS choice shiftcam tech, fuel consumption, tank range would be my first thoughts, possible xr height might be an issue for me.
I think you could up your reviews in terms of cost of ownership and add to your monthly calculation depreciation cost when you buy new. It would include the information about the price itself and regarding how much the bikes of different producers loose value over time. It is easy to find depreciation curve for specific bikes in the net and it would add a lot of value to the viewers because they could see the real cost that has to be incurred in order to own and ride such a bike. Thanks for your work by the way, you are very good in how detailed those reviews are :) All the best!
Beautiful bike, awesome in dark blue. Great review including ownership costs, well done! Might need an alternative like this for the wife, but first: Get the 2020 S1000XR in the door.
Nice review. Your channel got me to make videos on my motorbike BMW R1200GS. made one on a test ride on the r1250gs. I have found that the TFT displays are temperamental. my mate was riding his GSA, the txt went off, thankfully his nav 5 he was able to use for speedometer then 20 minutes later it comes back to life.
I had a 1250RS for half a day and whilst it's not sports bike cramped I did rediscover some old aches and pains after a few hours. Also found the pillion to be more 'perched' than my outgoing R1200GS. On the whole though a nice bike which handles well and stays where you put it on the road. After much deliberation I still prefer the GS so traded the 1200 for an R1250GS Rallye TE. Nice video though. Keep up the good work.
Great review as always, looking to change my S1000XR for one, I've got a road test on one next weekend while mines in for mot, I do love the blue colour, and I think your review has made my mind up already. 👌👍
@@mikieman74 I actually bought the RS, suits my riding style, "with pillion," the bike is lower than the xr and more relaxed ride, seems just as quick, not so comfortable for me though, bars are slightly lower and I tend to lean forward more, but it is a lovely bike and not disappointed that I changed.
You can buy an enhanced rear mudguard at any BMW UK/AUS dealer. Quick and easy bolt-on OEM replacement for the piece that sits behind the number plate arm. Not so pretty, but as it's much wider it keeps all the mud of the back of your pillion and your top-box. Forget the huggers, they do very little.
Hey mate. Top job again. I agree with you. This bike makes sense for road users. I'm either buying one of these or a Yamaha FJ 1300 next year. Thank you so much for your efforts. I look forward to your videos and never miss one.
Love your videos and another great in depth review, far more detail than other reviewers. Thumbs up. And that beautiful scenery around where you live, love it. Cheers from Australia
Most yt reviewers ride around their village not exceeding 100 kmh and this only on a motorway. No twisties no pushing the mashine even close to its limits. Each and every bike ridden in such conditions is nice. Fairing is nice, engine even nicer. Suspension plush and overall a cool bike. Vespa 50 cc would be nice too
I really enjoyed testing this bike when looking to trade our '16 plate FJR. The only issue was for us as we tour a lot is the lack of space both the luggage and its physical size for two up riding. It was for us the only BMW choice as it's relatively light and not a GS. We ended up with a GS1250 Exclusive as it had the size which for a tall person like me needs for riding distance.
@TMF superb review. I own the R1200RS SE and already have my order in for next march and the R1250RS SE.. Thank you for an amazing in depth review. Very helpful and straight forward. :-)
A good review. I have just completed my first 1k miles on my R1250RS and I agree with all of your points. I had the R1200RS prior to this and the latest model is a huge step up in my opinion. One negative for me is the price of the 'running-in' service. As one has just made a sizeable investment a few weeks before, it seems a bit of a cheek to charge so much so soon. The R1250RS is a brilliant bike and, bearing in mind I am 6'3", I find it very comfortable but get a bit of 'bum ache' after a couple of hours. However, this is easily relieved by a quick stop and walk about. The engine and gearbox are brilliant..
Adrian Tamblyn-Watts I’ve got the R1200RS and get numb bum syndrome after a couple of hours. Have invested in an air hawk which helps a lot and being a low bike can still get feet planted on the deck
Thank you for posting. Can't remember if you mention the warranty periods when presenting the "living with" a bike videos. If you do, my bad, if you don't, you might want to consider it. Potentially, it can affect the yearly cost of the bike when comparing a bike with a two year warranty vs a bike with a three year warranty. Fwiw, I don't tire of watching your videos and always look forward to seeing them. Great job.
Motorcycle servicing is so damn expensive, major service on my car is less than half that price! I'll stick to older machines I can service myself. Great vlog again, always enjoy your stuff, thank you.
Thanks TMF for a nice review. I'm looking to buy a 21-22 R 1250 RS Exclusive used and found your review quite useful. The quiet exhaust issue your raise is a plus for me. Some residual concerns not addressed are the rear mudguard, which appears to promotes a tail tidy but hardly practical. Also, not sure how much proetecion is offered to the rest of the components. Likewise, the front mudguard may be too short in arc to provide full engine protection in this type of design. None of these issues were discussed in your review, but important for daily and touring riders alike. You also don't discuss slow full lock cornering such as low radius u-turns under engine power with feet on the pegs. A 240+kg bike can be a challenge under these circumstances.
I would love it if you could get your hands on an HP2 Sport (Or BMW to build a new one). It's a bike that none of the motorcycle TH-camrs I follow have ever covered. It's a bit of a unicorn.
I was about to buy one of these then looked in to the new Honda Gold Wing DCT at the NEC today. Not the lardy "Touring" version but the basic model. Trouble is it's almost £8k more. Gulp. Agreed about the chrome exhaust, it really is horrible but you can spec it with the brilliant Acropovic and its transforms the characher of the bike. Don't bother with the standard or chrome ones. Great review as always.
@@TheMissendenFlyer I did actually, lots to see and whilst I went there to finally convince myself to buy a BMW R1250R / RS (it's your fault with your mega road tests!) I really was smitten with the Honda "Bagger" as it's called. Now if you could hurry along with a road test on one of those I'd be much obliged. See you at the ExCel in Feb.
Hi TMF, good review and if I had the money I think I would have to add the R1250RS, R1000S, S1000XR all to my garage, they always have me in conflict. I have the R1200GS, and a Triumph Street Triple 765RS (the wife’s machine 😉) nearly bought a S1000R, but decided it would be better to wait till after we close on our house, don’t want to upset the Mortgage company... LOL It would be nice to get one of each at least for a weekend test ride to decide which would make a nice addition to the 2 wheeled fleet.. Ha Ha ha, think I will have the BMW and Triumph Logo’s painted on the garage floor in the new house, (how is the garage expansion coming along?)
Many thanks for this review TMF, I have just chopped in my R1250GS Rallye after test riding this. As you alluded to, I'm very unlikely to take the GS off road and the RS is much easier to manage for my little legs (I'm 5'8 too) and quite a bit lighter. The review was reassuring and helped with my decision so it was appreciated. Not sure Mrs W would agree though.............
2 screens on a motorcycle is nuts. I don't need to daytrade while I'm riding. I do think this is a good choice for older guys like me who are sporty 60 y.o. sods.
Very nice theoretically. In practice it doesn't work at all. The tyrepumps at gas stations are almost allways worn out and won't push the valve in enough to fill the tyre. I've owned an 1915 R1200R and now own a 2017 R1200R and have to fill the tyres at work, where a have a better nozzle.
I am 5.11 ish I do find this bike a little cramped but you get used to it The screen is to small even in high positions I am about to change for a touring screen for summer touring TMF GUIDELINES are good for a guy of his size make sure you check out the bike for your individuality
Hi Andy Just catching up on this as another video got my attention with this bike. Couple of years later but the main dealer service costs generally are staggeringly high. Two bikes both due first service soon. SV650 and Vulcan S. one very well known dealer, £500 for both bikes on what is basically an oil and filter change. Kawasaki dealer perhaps more sensible at £150 and another Suzuki dealers (though sells a few brands) at £228. So, still for something I could do in 15 mins each was £378. I found one dealer that can do both for £325, but even that is incredible. Just had a Land-rover Discovery serviced and MOT for £208 for comparison. Can’t wait for the warranty to expire as this is just stupid.
You have to watch 19 minutes until he mentions how the bike handles. Evidently, the tire valve angle and how you can wash it are more important details to him.
Well this is because it’s my follow up review - I talked about handling etc in my “first ride” video. I can read the comments - no need to write in the third person like I’m not here! All the best.
A good real world review (as usual) Andy. Much better than the usual factory brochure style. You didn't say if you would buy one or trade in your GS for it....
Andy love the channel, especially your honest reviews. I am getting back into riding after a ten year break, mainly due to an accident, which in your opinion would be the better bike for commuting and the odd long distance tour, the BMW R1250Rs orR1250RT? Solo tours as no longer have baggage on Pillion, no disrespect to Mrs Flyer or other couples. Keep up good work, i miss your fashion reviews at the end of the test rides.
I've heard rumours that in 2020 wheels on all BMW's will not be available as standard, only as an optional extra. I know it's difficult, but is there any way in your reviews you could undertake a speedo accuracy test against a satnav? I think people would be quite surprised by the exaggeration of motorbike speedometers, which of course produces better mpg and services before they're needed.
@@chrisredfield3240 Sat Nav speed is not that accurate. I drive a 44 ton truck for a living and by law the speedometers in all HGVs are calibrated. I'm often showing 56mph (Max governed speed) whilst my TOMTOM pro truck sat Nav will show 53/54 mph. I believe that Motorcycle Speedo's are very accurate too....
I wonder why people prefer the BMW GS models to their sport-touring bikes. I've done lots of miles on both K and R sport-tourers and think they are wonderful and you don't need a ladder to get on them.
Top review TMF, I have that exact model sat in my Garage after it was delivered last week. Down side has been the 3 month wait for it to arrive and missing the last of the good weather. Got a VFR800 for a winter bike though to get me through till spring.

@@TheMissendenFlyer No but must I, Is it mandatory that I read the short comings list first? Generally I just click the play button, however you edited this therefore you could have acknowledged this discrepancy in the first part of the video if you wanted it known... Great down to earth review....Where have you been all my life? I'm thinking of going from my 2020 RT to an RS...I like the lines and it looks good for two up riding. Would I miss the heavier RT? Subscribed!
Great review. Is it better than the GS? In terms of the audio in the garage being on the left.. you can fix that in Audacity (it's free) and just copy the audio to both channels.. it will be mono, but better than being lop-sided.. hope that helps.
I plan on doing a few tours, one in particular is to Belgium (from UK) with a plan to throw in a track day at Spa. I'd imagine a bike like this or the Kawasaki Ninja 1000 sx would be the types of bikes I'd want to consider rather than an RT or GS?!
why does that nav unit look like it's being placed there as an after thought. Seems as if the techs at bmw realized after they designed the bike, that they forgot about the placement of the nav unit. I love how the nav unit fits in RT.
** APOLOGIES FOR THE IN GARAGE AUDIO ** (before any other clever cloggs pipes up....)
Hope BMW sells a ton of ‘em, because, from where I sit, obtaining a gently used fully farkled 2020 RS in 2023 might be a possibility.

Thanks for your work by the way, you are very good in how detailed those reviews are :) All the best!
Thanks for the advice!
that dark blue is stunning!
Thanks for the kind words!
Great review as always, looking to change my S1000XR for one, I've got a road test on one next weekend while mines in for mot, I do love the blue colour, and I think your review has made my mind up already. 👌👍
How did the road test go? Do you prefer the XR or RS?
Great review as always Andy!
Always the best place to go if you want a comprehensive overview.
Smashing
Thanks for that!
Now THAT’S a review. Thanks so much for taking such pains … and now I’m sold on the RS.
Glad to help!
Hey mate. Top job again. I agree with you. This bike makes sense for road users. I'm either buying one of these or a Yamaha FJ 1300 next year. Thank you so much for your efforts. I look forward to your videos and never miss one.
Cheers Kent!
Love your videos and another great in depth review, far more detail than other reviewers. Thumbs up. And that beautiful scenery around where you live, love it. Cheers from Australia
Anyway......
Top idea for a viral video.
'Mrs Flyer does a pillion hot lap at the track'
Viral.
If you take servicing into consideration, then you should account for tires, brakes, and petrol. Especially when you bring up an Aprilia rsv4.
You do a very good job. I really value your videos. Thank you ❤️
Thank you - very kind of you to say!
Vespa 50 cc would be nice too
Thanks for watching anyway
Absolutely EXCELLENT review. Thank you so much for the effort.
Glad it was helpful!
Free first service is always part of the deal with my Bmw Motorrad dealer here in Ireland when buying a new bike
Good dealer!
I see so many Bike Review videos - Urs are One of The BEST (Specially when U Make Detailed Ones) !! Thanks :)
Thank you Manish - very kind of you to say so!
Cracking good video mate. I'm interested in this model but my RNineT is completey paid off so . . .
@TMF superb review. I own the R1200RS SE and already have my order in for next march and the R1250RS SE.. Thank you for an amazing in depth review. Very helpful and straight forward. :-)
Thanks for the kind words and congratulations on the new bike in advance!
Thanks Adrian - glad we concur!
Great job.
Thank you!
All MC reviews should be done in this manner.
I agree :0)
Motorcycle servicing is so damn expensive, major service on my car is less than half that price!
I'll stick to older machines I can service myself.
Great vlog again, always enjoy your stuff, thank you.
Thank you for the kind words!
I've always wanted a BMW motorcycle but I'm afraid their like their cars. A pain in the ass to maintain as they age
They sure can! (I’m a Gold Wing owner!!)
Its actually a Pretty looking bike together with its other attributes.Cheers
Sound is left speaker only (and a bit quite)! Bike looks good.
Sorry about that - in garage technical gremlins....
Thank you Martin - did you enjoy the show? I'm there tomorrow...
A great review, as ever. I agree about the chrome exhaust: I have the 'R' version and the HP-branded Akrapovic end can improves the sound no end.
Love your videos, I watch from Texas. I would love to see a few more videos about your Royal Enfield.
Coming soon Germain - stay tuned!
Have arranged a test ride after your review, excellent as usual
Comfy, shaft drive, enough power, plenty torque, good waether protection....what more would us mere mortals want
Awesome review. Congratulations.
Another good summary video TMF. It is a nice looking bike.
Cheers....
Cheer's TMF. Greta vid as alwaysI Love the Beemer but currently in the market for a Tiger 880 (or 900 when it comes out!). tempted but not quite.....!
Very good feedback exactly what a rider would like to know. Thank you and keep up the good work.
Cheers!
Hey TMF great video, hope you're doing well thanks for the videos, back into winter here in Canada.....
Lovely and hot where I am in Thailand :0)
2 screens on a motorcycle is nuts. I don't need to daytrade while I'm riding. I do think this is a good choice for older guys like me who are sporty 60 y.o. sods.
Quality machine here even the Police love them (In undisclosed performance upgrade Spec)
4:53 that's a straight valve ;p lovely attention to detail though in coming up with a very neat installation.
I am 5.11 ish I do find this bike a little cramped but you get used to it
The screen is to small even in high positions I am about to change for a touring screen for summer touring
TMF GUIDELINES are good for a guy of his size make sure you check out the bike for your individuality
Good honest review. If I had the dosh,it would be mine. Love it!
Hi Andy
Just catching up on this as another video got my attention with this bike.
Yes crazy isn't it....
That bike's a stunner!
A good real world review (as usual) Andy. Much better than the usual factory brochure style. You didn't say if you would buy one or trade in your GS for it....
A whole video coming soon on the RS v GS - stay tuned!
I think the RS - possibly a better commuter option….though both brilliant bikes…
I found i changed vehicles and the trip to the in-laws was now 130miles not the 120 it used to be. Also 30mph is (24mph on the gps)
@@chrisredfield3240 My Honda exaggerates by 9% compared to a satnav at a constant speed.
Once again a Fantastic review TMF. I’ll Definitely be test riding one soon 👍
I wonder why people prefer the BMW GS models to their sport-touring bikes. I've done lots of miles on both K and R sport-tourers and think they are wonderful and you don't need a ladder to get on them.
I think the extra legroom is an appeal - plus the rugged image....
Brilliant video thank you
Very welcome!
Excellent review as always!
Thank you Pete!
Great review - very informative. Love your work mate.
Thank you Peter!
Top review TMF, I have that exact model sat in my Garage after it was delivered last week. Down side has been the 3 month wait for it to arrive and missing the last of the good weather. Got a VFR800 for a winter bike though to get me through till spring.
Hey congratulations on the new bike! What a bummer about the wait though, why so long??
@@TheMissendenFlyer Bikes got held up after production with a PDI issue and could not be released. BMW were a bit vague on reasons why just kept holding it and holding it. Its here now and bloody lovely.
Yeah it sounds like a farm tractor to me and speaking of sound, narration done in the garage only has left channel content.
Nice review...
Did you not see my pinned comment? ;0)
@@TheMissendenFlyer No but must I, Is it mandatory that I read the short comings list first? Generally I just click the play button, however you edited this therefore you could have acknowledged this discrepancy in the first part of the video if you wanted it known... Rather lie-in-wait right? I get it...
excellent as always TMF! Mahalo from Hawaii.
Sawasdee from Thailand!
TheMissendenFlyer Another Bike Tour stress buster? Chang Mai?
Great down to earth review....Where have you been all my life? I'm thinking of going from my 2020 RT to an RS...I like the lines and it looks good for two up riding. Would I miss the heavier RT? Subscribed!
Welcome aboard!
Great review. Is it better than the GS? In terms of the audio in the garage being on the left.. you can fix that in Audacity (it's free) and just copy the audio to both channels.. it will be mono, but better than being lop-sided.. hope that helps.
Thanks Saqib - too late now but I'll bear it in mind for the future!
@@TheMissendenFlyer 👍🏽
Good bike just wish they would update the k1300s which is better in my opinion
Another top video.. thanks
My pleasure!
I plan on doing a few tours, one in particular is to Belgium (from UK) with a plan to throw in a track day at Spa. I'd imagine a bike like this or the Kawasaki Ninja 1000 sx would be the types of bikes I'd want to consider rather than an RT or GS?!
Excellent informative review.
Thank you Shane!
Gotta love the balls of bahrnstomers charging £210 for a 1st service. I'm glad I bought mine from CW Motorcycles who only charged me £100 .
why does that nav unit look like it's being placed there as an after thought. Seems as if the techs at bmw realized after they designed the bike, that they forgot about the placement of the nav unit.
I love how the nav unit fits in RT.
Yes I agree the placement is a bit naff.....
@@TheMissendenFlyer and the installation of a tank bag would completely block the view of the nav screen
Great review mate.
Thank you kindly Fabian!
