I’m in the market for a “pipe ‘n slippers” sport touring bike, so I may be a tad picky with your review. You say the gearbox is amazing; my experience is that the Boxer’s gear box is decent, but hardly as refined as other manufacturers, and even not as good as BMW’s own R1000’s. That said, most recently I’ve only tapped through the 2019 RnineT’s gearbox, not the newest RS. Relative to other bikes you’ve tested, is the RS’s gearbox really that refined? Is it better than the air cooled RnineT? Does the up/down quick shifter (absent on the RnineT) work as seamlessly as other manufacturers?
I found the R1200RS (a year ago) to be very smooth both up and down provided technique is correct; unforgiving (clunky) if you get it wrong. You must have throttle open when changing up; completely closed when changing down. You're right, though, the S1000RR was silky smooth, next level. I did ask but BMW mechanic was unable to explain why the boxer gearbox was not as smooth as the "S".
PT -Thanks for sharing your experience; most of my (extensive) experience is with the older “half NASA half Massey-Ferguson” Boxers. Compared to the dry clutch days, the newer Boxer’s gearboxes are better but, I also wonder why the new models don’t meet the same standard as their four and six cylinder Beemers (the newer R1000 is butter smooth as is the up/down quick shifter). A mystery, I guess, yet to be explained by the BMW wizards!
I currently have a VFR800vtec and a 1200 GS and love them both. I wonder if this could be the perfect blend of both. I might take one for a test ride next spring.
@@majordelays4909 yes, took one for a test ride and loved it. Perfect bike. I wanted to spec it out to be a bit special with some of the option 719 packs and wheels, but there was a shortage of stock. All they could offer was a standard TE, so I went to KTM and got blown away by the GT.
Spent the day sitting on bikes I can't afford at the bike show, deffo need to test ride an s1000r if I pass my mod2 next week. BMW seem to make some wonderful machinery!
Thank you for the review, in 2 weeks I’ll be changing my 2019GS to a 2022RS and I’m so nervous as I love my GS… I might regret it but your video is giving me confidence to proceed with the deal… 😅
You must have incredible eyesight with both dark visor and dark glasses in the UK, I am most envious. Anyway the question ... how do you keep your spectacles from misting over? I've tried various methods but most are pretty rubbish.
Have the Air vents open and/or have the visor lifted slightly and not fully closed. I've found some helmets better than others and also bikes with a screen like RS can more problematic because of reduced airflow around the helmet.
The entire video I was worried about the camera falling off the windshield. Is it also attached to the rearview mirror with zipties? Really wondering why you didn't put it on the inside of the windshield just above the TFT.
I'm a fan of twins in general and quite tempted by the new RS (except for the price!), but as I'm more lanky than your good self at 6' tall and 33" leg I do wonder if the riding position might be a bit cramped? The pegs certainly felt a tad high when I sat on one, and there's no sign of lowered pegs as far as I can see. I do wish Moto Guzzi would do a road going version of their V85...
Peter Livermore there is a high seat option whichever should help a bit. I believe it's about 1" taller than the standard seat. And I believe the RS also has a Sport seat option, which oddly is even taller than the high seat.
I'm 6'2 and I recently test rode this bike and I know what you mean, but there is a lowered footpeg kit now on the options lists, it's about £500 but it looks good ! Btw, I own an R1250R, and I was thinking of PX'ing my R for this bike because of it's better wind protection, but I can't help thinking that the R fits me better. (I've got a +30mm seat on mine btw)
tbh, I think a high seat on an RS might make the forward lean a bit too much ?? I'm beginning to think that an R with a high seat is a better option for taller riders..I think I need another test ride on an RS and this time i'll stick my +30mm Wunderlich seat on it, that would be a good test, and if I do that I'll report back :)
They had a low peg option for the '17 1200 although it wasn't much. I've not seen it as an option but will be enquiring when I place my order. Lost my RS to wildlife more than a year ago and am itching to get back on and feeling the new engine.
Seriously looking at this bike for next spring. Only issue really is whether it’s a bit of a waste as most of my riding is a relatively short commute, but it does seem to do everything 🧐
BMW do make some excellent bikes, I just don't get on with their pricing strategies. In this day and age you should be able to buy the bike you'd like, without having to go to the options list. Always feel like their just trying to rip you off and squeeze more money out of you.
I’ve watched countless videos of you and can’t, for the life of me, understand driving laws over there! Especially when you pass a very long line of cars into seemingly oncoming traffic! I had to watch this video twice because the first time I was just watching the roads and not paying attention to anything you said!! Lol 😂 Keep up the great work! I love it!
I agree that the symetric headlights on all the recent beemers are a 100% improvement, after a test ride in 2012 I loved the S1000RR and was on the verge of buying one but every time I seen the cockeyed look it put me off to the extent that I opted for the Fireblade, though TBH the S1000RR was probably a better bike but IMO looks really matter.
I completely disagree. This new symmetrical headlamp look is the epitome of bland. A little bit Fazer, a little bit Versys (neither of which appeal to me)and now lost its uniqueness. ( I know the XR has the same look). The change could've been justified to me if BMW had cured the wind buffeting problem but by all accounts that hasn't happened. I like the idea of more power and especially more torque compared to the 1200RS but a combination of those headlights and dull colour schemes has put me off.
I agree with you, and liked your first review of the bike, the 1250rs in my view is a better looking bike with a much improved front end, not quite so sure about the bigger silencer though. Having owned a R1200Rs which was unfortunately written off in a SMIDSY U turn, I have just purchased a new R1250Rs sport. I notice a few improvements over the older model; 1, The side stand is less ‘upright’ so is more stable when parked, 2 LED headlights are much brighter and a better spread of beam, 3, gearbox is improved and slicker, 4, TFT is brilliant meaning I can actually read the speedo now, 5, Engine is smoother at low speed and no engine surging that I used to notice on the 1200. So would is it worth upgrading from a 1200? The performance difference is not significant, however the improvements make it a nicer place to be but only if you have cash burning a hole in your pocket.
Test ride one a few weeks ago. First boxer I’d ridden. Sounded like a tractor and think that if ever quick shifters are fitted to tractors, that’s how they’d operate. Very agricultural! Wasn’t impressed and even less so by BMW’s pricing strategy. Think it will be totally eclipsed by the 1000XR.
Me and the wife would have jumped at one of these instead of the 1250GS Exclusive we eventually bought when we traded our FJR in. Our problem with the bike was it was very cramped two up. Lovely bike though all the same.
So how does the riding position compare with the Speed Twin given that people say the speed twin has you leaning forward? Is it that much lower in the bars?
@@TheMissendenFlyer Thankyou. That RS is a sexy thing though the Speed twin ticks all the boxes that really need to be ticked. I need to slap myself and tell myself to settle down. Bikes eh! Cheers.
Great review many thanks, I personally hate the new iPad style dashes. They look so cheap, like a phone strapped to your bike. I prefer a mix of real dials and a TFT display (like the K1600)
I am trying to thin the herd a bit and have had trouble finding a sport tourer that fits my needs. Currently I have a 2017 SDGT but I also have a 2019 MT10. I was hoping to get one bike to replace both. The GT is just too raw, I love the bike but it is unruly around town and not quite comfortable enough for long distance. The MT10 is an amazing handling bike but not quite there for any kind of touring, mostly due to the gas mileage. Does this bike handle well enough to compensate for the MT10 sportiness? It appears to be comfortable for long distance based on everything I have seen or read but will I be disappointed in the power coming off of these other two bikes? Sorry for the questions but these are few and far between right now in the states so I can't test ride one. Cheers!
Well the power delivery is very different on this bike but ultimately it is a very enjoyable machine to ride and comfortable as a tourer I imagine - but it will feel substantially less quick than both the MT10 and SDGT
My first bike was the R1150RS a much underrated bike and not that popular in the UK (The RT was the bigger seller) but were very popular in the States. Love the looks of the new RS and will probably be my next bike.
The RS is a great machine full of modern technology, I have ridden one and everything you say is true, well almost, if offered the choice of BMWs to go touring on I would prefer the GS R1250 shift cam or my R1200 GS, the RS is just a tad towards sports machine than tourer, for me anyway, as they say you pays your money and makes your choice, well done.
Great review and like the zip tie safety measures in case you loose the GoPro😊. Just replaced my GS for one of these. No regrets so far. Just that bit easier to handle being a bit lower. Keep the reviews coming👍🏽
Best bike that BMW make in my opinion, (the only thing I’d buy with a beak on it is a duck for the pond). Specced-up it is about 20k which makes it a tad expensive but definitely tempting! Might have to go down the local BM garage in Albi for a test next week. Thanks for that Andy. Great review as always and have a good weekend.
TheMissendenFlyer you’re welcome to call in for a glass of red when you’re around! And it’s good wine.....the ‘dragon’ was in charge at one of the local vineyards! 👍🍷🍷🍷
I have a 1200 GS and the wife says she is very comfy on the back. Is the RS as comfy for a pillion? Also how did you find the different positioning of the Sat nav? Thanks
I've owned the Exclusive version for nearly 2 months now. Has about 3,500 km on it. Knees are a little cramped at 6'2, but I can still ride all day even though I am old with a dodgy knee.. Rear brake lever is not long enough - have to have ankle at a sharp angle to hit it which has caused me to miss it racing down hills a few times. Now has a Wunderlich extender but that seems a little too long - a work in progress Slight vibration everywhere above about 4500 rpm. Nothing to worry about in Australia as that is way over the speed limit. Ended up putting a set of bar back risers on it - much better, more relaxed arms. Screen is crap. BMW crap Bluetooth system in the TFT & crippled firmware in the Nav VI. Can't have DRL & Low Beam on at the same time - I figure more light must be better. Can't fit more than a postage stamp under the seats. NAV holder should have more adjustment built in - another Wunderlich accessory to fix that. Apart from the above, I love every thing else about it. I traded a VFR1200X Crosstourer for it & couldn't be happier.
Thanks for the real world feedback - as it happens I have my review of the cross tourer coming in a few days and my in depth review of this one - let’s see if you agree with my findings! Cheers...
I'm on the market for a sports tourer and narrowed it down to this and the 2021 Hayabusa. This one has better amenities (like keyless go, factory hardbags), but - to me - it sounds and feels like an agricultural machine with all that uneven voice and constant vibration. One can even see the windscreen vibrate a lot in your video. The Hayabusa just feels much more bike for roughly the same money. I don't know. This bike is more sensible choice, but I'm not sure I want to go sensible just yet or wait until I'm 40-50 to finally get a BMW.
Another great video. I've had two R1200RS's and now a R1200GS and they are both great bikes but I'm the same as you; it's the price that put me off! My R1200RS with keyless was £14.3k the top spec new one is over £16k! I don't like the NAV posn on the RS but at least you can use the TFT on the 1250. I'm more interested now in the new 2020 S1000XR.
I'm also looking forward to trying the new S1000XR. I did try a new "old" model, and the riding position was spot on, perfect for a taller rider. But after living with an R1250R for a while there's no way I could live with the S1000XR's engine. Just felt like it had no torque, and I kept trying to change up even though I was already in 6th :), but be interesting to see if the new engine in the 2020 is more torquey because if is that could be a contender :)
I rode the 1200 version a few years ago. I found it a hoot to ride but as far a sport touring, it's sporty but only tourish. Touring could be done but a little cramped up position for cross country style riding. Cheers!
I ended up here because , well as much as I love my Speed Triple, Speed Twin , I'm after a sports tourer. Went to see an almost new Tracer 9 GT at a BMW dealers, seems okay. I have reservations about the Wall-E dash and over complicated switch gear, and everyone moans about the wind shield on the Tracer (but it seems an MRA screen can fix that). Whilst I was there , I spied this. Don't guess I'd considered a BMW. Yeah , I need to get a test ride on both, and the Ninja 1000 SX, GSX-S1000-GT are also on the short list , maybe even a second hand Tiger 1050 sport (it has a "good" triple, not T plane crap) So my question is what is your favourite sports tourer ?
@@TheMissendenFlyer thanks :) The Ninja SX is on my list to check out. It'd have to be the red and black version :-) Mrs Karl(osh) has sat on a Goldwing and loved the pillion seat, I guess if I want maybe just one "do it all" bike, the Goldwing doesn't quite fit what I want. I ended up chatting with a Goldwing fan recently, he loved his , and was also trying to convince me. I would need to build a new bike shed, because I couldn't manouevre a Goldwing into current one (it's complicated!) I do need to get a ride of one :-)
Mate what's that Jacket you're wearing? The protection seems nice. I don't think you review Kwackers, but, I hope you can get your hands on the new ZX25R. I now have enough for a down payment on the Striple RS l, but am waiting for the 2020s to land in in India. I think I might just do the Interceptor/GT650 and ZX25R instead!
I have reviewed the odd Kawasaki it's just that they're relatively difficult for me to get hold of...the Jacket is my Richa Goretex, review coming soon!
Bike in front before you turned off was a silver st1300.I THINK.Nice bike. BMW gearboxes still sound two clunky.to me.ST1300 probably just as good ,and cheaper.
Ive got an R and was thinking PX'ing for RS. It's a tough choice, I'd say for generally riding around, the R is nicer and easier, and more fun. And the riding position of the R is prob better for taller riders. If you test ride an R, you really to somehow try it with a higher seat as it makes a hell of a difference...
drw1926 sold my RS (‘15) for the R (‘17) - loved it (RS) but just a bit too much of a reach for my short arms, even with risers. Problem solved with the R with the standard seat. Both great bikes tho, no losing either way.
In my road test of The RT which, has the same engine and trans, I found it to be clunkier then the previous 1200 LC engine. The quickshift Is not smooth either.

Good luck with the mod 2!
Thank you for the review, in 2 weeks I’ll be changing my 2019GS to a 2022RS and I’m so nervous as I love my GS… I might regret it but your video is giving me confidence to proceed with the deal… 😅
Go for it!
That screen does a fair bit of wibbling and wobbling at standstill. Lovely bike, thanks again TMF.
I use a pin lock and make sure any helmet chin curtains are removed....not breathing also helps!
The SOS button that doesn’t work. Mine shows continual faults.
The entire video I was worried about the camera falling off the windshield. Is it also attached to the rearview mirror with zipties? Really wondering why you didn't put it on the inside of the windshield just above the TFT.
Yes zip ties on for safety - good view from that position...
Really shows off the image stabilization too.
Anybody know why the 'K' series engine fell out off flavour?
If BMW could get away with it they’d charge you extra for the ‘rotating forward motion Pro’ package.
Wheels.
Well if u ever decide to buy a bmw car, that experience will feel very familiar too as far as options to get what u want
I’ve watched countless videos of you and can’t, for the life of me, understand driving laws over there! Especially when you pass a very long line of cars into seemingly oncoming traffic! I had to watch this video twice because the first time I was just watching the roads and not paying attention to anything you said!! Lol 😂
Keep up the great work! I love it!
Thanks!
Really enjoyed your video you should have your own TV show. Thanks for all your hard work I always look forward to seeing every new video.
Very kind of you Philip! Lots more to come....
Agreed
I completely disagree. This new symmetrical headlamp look is the epitome of bland. A little bit Fazer, a little bit Versys (neither of which appeal to me)and now lost its uniqueness. ( I know the XR has the same look). The change could've been justified to me if BMW had cured the wind buffeting problem but by all accounts that hasn't happened. I like the idea of more power and especially more torque compared to the 1200RS but a combination of those headlights and dull colour schemes has put me off.
@@ed.barker7069 It's a matter of opinion ,it'd be boring if everyone was of the same taste.
What I hate about it is the GPS location. I couldn’t imagine a worse spot to choose to mount it.
Is there a lot of glare on the satnav in the position it's in? It looks like an awkward position. What's your top 5 worst things about it?
Thank you for posting. Can't wait for you to review the new baby RS from BMW and how it will compare to the 1250 RS. Good riding.
What baby RS? A 900?
Compared to the 2021 Hayabusa? I’m planning to replace my GSX-1000 s next winter
Did they fix the issue that you cant grease the drive shaft without ripping the bike apart?
I've not heard of that one before!
My friend just bought one so I thought I would check the bike out before it gets delivered Hope I get to have a go on it :)
Fair enough!
Me and the wife would have jumped at one of these instead of the 1250GS Exclusive we eventually bought when we traded our FJR in. Our problem with the bike was it was very cramped two up. Lovely bike though all the same.
The two bikes in Old Amersham were a Triumph Sprint ST and a Honda ST1300 Pan European. How do I know? It was me!
Nice one!
Foot pegs a bit high for tall dudes or if you have bad knees
Do you prefer the bmw 1200GS or the Tiger Triumph 1200 explorer? Why? Thanks
BMW - Feels so much lighter and agile both when riding and when moving around on the driveway....1200 Explorer feels very top heavy to me....
Thank you very much for your review....might buy one!
Nice. Surprised value for money wasn’t in there 😜. That camera looks well secured on the windshield. Great stabilisation.
So how does the riding position compare with the Speed Twin given that people say the speed twin has you leaning forward? Is it that much lower in the bars?
It is a little lower than this yes....
@@TheMissendenFlyer Thankyou. That RS is a sexy thing though the Speed twin ticks all the boxes that really need to be ticked. I need to slap myself and tell myself to settle down. Bikes eh! Cheers.
How wide is it at the engine? I wanted a BMW, but was unsure of whether or not it'd fit in where I keep it...
I don’t know I didn’t measure it - the handlebars are wider I suspect...
On my second RS now, both 1200’s cannot fault the concept. May have a sniff at the 1250 on your recommendation.
Good video, really enjoyed it.
Thank you!
The BMW innovative design and engineering is exceeded only by your innovative use of a cable tie to hold the camera in place :)
I’ve learned through experience Phil!
Great review many thanks, I personally hate the new iPad style dashes. They look so cheap, like a phone strapped to your bike. I prefer a mix of real dials and a TFT display (like the K1600)
I tend to agree! .....but if you must have a TFT, the BMW one is pretty darn good.....
Cheers Derek....
If I win the lottery I'll definitely consider one.
Great review and like the zip tie safety measures in case you loose the GoPro😊. Just replaced my GS for one of these. No regrets so far. Just that bit easier to handle being a bit lower. Keep the reviews coming👍🏽
Yes never let it be said I didn’t learn my lesson on the GoPro front!
Cool review...what mike setup do you have on your gopro please.
Thanks, details in the description.....
@@TheMissendenFlyer Ooopss, sorry, must scroll more often :-)
Couldn’t agree more with your top 5. Great video. Cheers!
Cheers!
Cheers Steve (forgot you’re near Albi, love it there....)
TheMissendenFlyer you’re welcome to call in for a glass of red when you’re around! And it’s good wine.....the ‘dragon’ was in charge at one of the local vineyards! 👍🍷🍷🍷
My local dealer has a relook one with the white frame.... a color you’d have to really love to buy it
BMW are making a great range of bikes at the moment.
Think you should widen your scope and do a van demo, new Vauxhall Vivaro is good, I work for them sure can set a demo up
Send me a mail!
I have a 1200 GS and the wife says she is very comfy on the back. Is the RS as comfy for a pillion?
Also how did you find the different positioning of the Sat nav?
Thanks
I'm curious to know, if you were buying one new now, which would you go for...this one or the GS?
Tough one! Stay tuned for the next video first thing Thursday!
Nice vid.
What jacket is that? It looks really good
It’s my Richa Goretex my current favourite jacket - review coming soon!
A great bike! Looks amazing! Have fun!
Now has a Wunderlich extender but that seems a little too long - a work in progress
Slight vibration everywhere above about 4500 rpm.
Get the ‘Busa then! When you get older you’ll get wiser 😉
Yes looking forward to seeing and trying one of those...
Yeah , I need to get a test ride on both, and the Ninja 1000 SX, GSX-S1000-GT are also on the short list , maybe even a second hand Tiger 1050 sport (it has a "good" triple, not T plane crap)
So my question is what is your favourite sports tourer ?
GoldWing! Or if not that then Ninja 1000 sx
@@TheMissendenFlyer
thanks :)
The Ninja SX is on my list to check out.
It'd have to be the red and black version :-)
Mrs Karl(osh) has sat on a Goldwing and loved the pillion seat, I guess if I want maybe just one "do it all" bike, the Goldwing doesn't quite fit what I want.
I ended up chatting with a Goldwing fan recently, he loved his , and was also trying to convince me. I would need to build a new bike shed, because I couldn't manouevre a Goldwing into current one (it's complicated!)
I do need to get a ride of one :-)
Great video, seems like a fantastic update!
Cheers Pete!
Seriously considering for my next bike. Thanks TMF.
How easy is it to push around the garage compart to a R1200RT?
Safer of riding it on the open roads instead of pushing it around the garage. ✊💦
Much the same....
It looks like the handles are pointing a bit downwards. Don’t you get tired in your hands during a long ride?
Still interesting bike.
I looked over one in the dealer this week. In Australia, $28,000 ride away. That is an awful lot of cash.
Bike in front before you turned off was a silver st1300.I THINK.Nice bike.
BMW gearboxes still sound two clunky.to me.ST1300 probably just as good ,and cheaper.
'Hello Andy, now I'm just waiting for the RS vs. R vid to help me finalise my decision. Cheers!
@@gregcnz3301 Thanks for the input. May I ask your height? I'm 6'1"/186cm.
drw1926 I’m a giant .. 5’7” (170cm) 😂😂😂
Is shifting supposed to be that clunky?
Yes they are horrible but something BMUU owners cast aside.
Yes it's a BMW.
So, nothing to worry about?
In my road test of The RT which, has the same engine and trans, I found it to be clunkier then the previous 1200 LC engine.
The quickshift Is not smooth either.
That is nothing like the Ford Galaxy that we had stateside at one time. 😁
Same thoughts. 🤔
A look around the bike before the ride would be nice !
If you checked out my previous "first ride" video on the bike you can see a full walk around and overview of the spec etc....
@@TheMissendenFlyer i watch all your vids, I find most vids do not show the bikes, and I am talking about Richy, Teapotone, and lambchoprides ect...
@@markgatward8765 Well I can't vouch for them but in my "first ride" reviews I always do a walk around....this is intended as a slightly different take on the review.
Yep what's not to love about this magnificent machine! I’m really interested in this bike. Anyone know how it is in the city?
Yes tmf lovely bike looking cold on this ride good review thanks from Danny
It was!
How is it over bumps on the road ?
Great
