  • 2019 BMW R1250R Review: The latest machine I've ridden to get the 1250 Boxer with Shift-Cam is this, the 2019 BMW R1250R. Having ridden the older R1200R a while back I wasn't especially looking forward to riding this but I was very pleasantly surprised by what a capable machine this is.....of all the bikes that I've ridden with the new power unit, this one surprised me most. Stick around and stay tuned for my first impressions review....

    Aaaaahhh yes Mr Flyer! This was the bike that changed everything for me. The S1000RR was in for service, & the salesman always reckoned I should buy the GS. He said "why don't you take a bike out while your waiting? Like the GS." I said no, I'm never going to buy a bike like that! (heh heh!) "So which one would you like? take your pick." I said the R 1200 R looks like a nice ride. I'm telling you, I've never had a smile on my face riding on a freeway before. I was gobsmacked at how much fun I had riding this bike. Yes I was wearing my sports bike blinkers on all the time back then, but this bike was a revelation to me! I just couldn't believe at how good it was to ride. It really changed everything about bikes for me. I cannot believe what it must be like now with a 1250 in it. And as the story goes, I got rid of the sports bike & own a naked bike & a GSA now!!!! Thank you R 1200 R. You're a beautiful thing. Cheers groover ;-)

    I’m so happy that BMW is now offering multiple seat heights including quite low on several of their models. I’m 5’1” so BMW used to be too tall on nearly all models. I really love this bike. If I can bring together enough 💵 I will buy one. Outstanding review as always!

    And that’s what I’ve been waiting for. Getting it as soon as it comes to US market. After riding the gs with the 1250 engine, I couldn’t sit still, telling everyone how great the all new boxer is. Said as soon as it comes out on the r12r I’ll be one of the first people to get to.

    Thanks for the review TMF. I bought the previous model R1200R a couple of years ago, and I've loved every day on it since. It's more of an all-rounder to me than the alternatives you mentioned, and the comfort and riding position were a big factor. That new Shift-Cam looks enticing though. Seems much smoother than the implementation on my bike. Might have to pop into the dealer and take one for a ride ...

      Malcolm Jacobson - Typically if you are popping in for a test ride, you might want to be sure the gas tank is almost empty, don’t want to give the dealer too much gas when you trade with them. LOL

    I've got 22,000 miles on a 2016 R1200R. It doesn't belong in the same conversation as super nakeds. It is a naked sport touring bike.
    I've also got some time on a 2015 RS. The R, in my opinion, is much more fun than the RS. I'm really happy BMW gives us the boxer in a naked roadster. Not for everyone sure, but for me and my uses it is the perfect motorcycle.

      Actually this 1250 has decent horsepower now, and more importantly MORE torque than any hooligan or super naked bike out there, so yes it can compete very well against super-nakeds. In fact, I often choose it over my super fun Super Duke R.

    I recently had a 790 KTM and it was terrific. Interestingly the low fuel tanks have the same weight distribution advantage as my 2000 R1100R. The thing is it doesn’t like to cruise slowly along the beach road. It runs 1000 rpms higher than the BMW and roasts your butt riding slow. I turned the KTM back in and gained a renewed appreciation of why BMW boxers are the bikes for this old guy. It cruises slowly at 2000 rpm just fine and has decent pickup at 5000 rpm. I can accelerate on even the steepest hills with the torque. My mechanic offered to let me ride his 1250 but I’m afraid of weak sales resistance to upgrading to the modern boxer.

    This'd be my pick of the boxers. But was (also) underwhelmed a year ago by a r1200r loan bike. Having reassessed what a boxer is for and the step-up with the new shiftcam, time to look again. I've a s1000r - 5yo now - and love it. But despite best intentions always feel compelled to use that performance. A more general-purpose bike like this might be more appropriate. Useful review - thanks.

    One comment on the shiftcam. It doesn’t come on at certain revs but any depending on how far and how aggresively you turn the throttle. That’s why you can’t tell when it switches the profile of intake cam.

    This is the best selling model in Germany. They know something about the R that the rest of the world doesn’t. I still like the previous air/oil cooled R enough that I have often considered buying one. This one is obviously much faster and better handling.

    Great review, and I watched it all the way to the end unlike other people who want to get their comments on here first hahaha. From my perspective and in my review this bike is way faster than I expected and I recon so much more tractable than the usual 1000cc 4 Pot naked and therefore often quicker?? For me the cornering was sublime. Made my R1200GS feel sluggish when I swapped back. Cheers and keep them coming.

    Another great review sir!! BMW have defiantly come on in leaps and bounds in the last 10 -15 years, I wouldn't of dreamed of having one, as I thought they were for boring old gits, or is it that I am getting old now !, anyhow, now if you have15+ grand to spend it would be difficult to choose which one, I had a GS for 2 years which was a fantastic machine, done everything very well, just a bit bulky in town, I like this bike but still prefer my 9RT ✌🏍

    Naked bikes are always the best looking. I've always loved the look of the R1XXXR, Speed/Street Triple, S1000R, Monster, etc. For me, the R1250R in HP paint may be the best looking of the bunch. However, if/when I buy a naked it'll likely be something else as I already have a Boxer powered beast in the garage and I'd like some variety. I'll definitely give one a test ride sometime though.

    I figured the boxer engine and shaft drive was the option for riders that want high mileage reliability with relatively little maintenance, with outright performance being a lower priority. Same reason they've been used as engines for ultralights/trikes etc I imagine. A lot of the "new" generation of BMWs (ie models introduced after they reinvented the BMW Motorrad brand from 2003-2008, such as the smaller bikes and the S1000R/RR) don't seem to have quite that reputation for Teutonic over engineering.

    TMF, have been thinking about your question regarding why someone would choose this over a S1000R... Personally, and coming from the S100XR (similar to the S1000R) what attracts me about the R1250R is the comfort/feel, the engine, and the overall manners of the bike. Much as I love the mental/bonkers engine of the S1000 series (especially in the S1000RR), as a daily ride it can become fatiguing when not downright excilarating. I guess its the same reason that I ddint go for one of the KTM or Aprilia super nakeds: the R1250R has more than enough power but is a much easier bike to get on with day to day, and much more versatile as you point out in your review. All lovely bikes just depends what you want and I think with the latest upgrade to the R1250R BMW have produced a winner.

      I haven't ridden either yet but am thinking about them...the R1250r has more torque than the s1000r, if I'm not mistaken. So that could mean more practical power. The 1250 has closed the gap a bit compared with the 1200. So I guess it's torque vs high end power.
      The only thing holding me back really is the lack of a proper twin sound.

    This roadster is meant to appeal to the naked touring market. With excellent pannier set up. There is a very small “touring” windscreen available that I have repeatedly tested at high speed that kept windblast off the chest area and directed to the arm vents of the BMW jacket. Best convertable out there.

    I could feel my right wrist twisting and the hair on the back of my neck rising in excitement, the crisp morning air and the gourmet cuisine from the hotel in my nostrils. Nice review.
    Never really liked the styling of this bike, but with this new motor I might not give a damn about the looks with a ridiculous looking grin on my face. Having said that, the HP doesn’t look half bad.
    How would you rate those Michelins? Personally, I found all Michelin tires to be really good, but noisy whether on a car or bike. Went back to the Tourance Next tires on my GS and the reduction in noise from the Anakee 3s is massive.
    Useful tip, if you ever get the opportunity to ride a factory option lowered GS, do. I was pleasantly surprised despite having no issue reaching the ground on the standard. You still get the great leg room but with a lowered center of gravity it handles as if on rails in the twisties and one dirt roads. Quite frankly, anyone with no intention of taking their GS on technical off road terrain should definitely at least test one before ordering their new bike.

    Hey TMF, nice review, can’t wait to test ride the new r1250r, I’ve got a 2015 r1200r, and I love it. The 1250 should be better than the 1200, because the liquid cooled 1200 is far superior to the air cooled 1150, technology tends to do that.
    I think calling these bikes a super naked is a bit misleading and that’s not what they are, they’re a roadster, a do all bike that does it very well, commute, tour, twisties, 2-up and limited dirt roads. All bikes are a compromise if you want them to do multiple roles, the r1200r just does everything better than most.
    Who are they for? Well since most GS’s never see a dirt road, and these bikes can do everything a GS can do (sometimes better IMHO) except off road, that’s the market, people like me that love the boxer engine, shaft-drive and comfort that don’t like wearing adventure gear to the cafe😎

    • @nielsmeer
      @nielsmeer 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I had the oil cooled R1200R and would agree it’s more of a roadster. It is a great all around bike. I also have a R1200GSA and it’s not as sporty as the R1200R. But with two bikes with the same engine, I switched my R1200R for a true super naked, the S1000R. If you have only one bike and don’t plan on doing any adventure riding, the R1200R series is a nice option.

    • @jimbothejetset
      @jimbothejetset 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      NooBiker for me it is the character of the boxer engine. An in line 4 is super smooth but for me lacks that character. The lumpy thump and the huge torque of the boxer engine outweighs any outright power advantage of the S. Also they’re quite rare, so you don’t bump into every Tom, Dick and Harry with an opinion on them! Tbf I did like the S, I just preferred the R. My opinion only though, try them both, then you’ll know for yourself.

    Hi Andy, you wondered who this bike might be for, if BMW also have the S1000R in the range. Well it was a toss-up between this and the S1000R back in 2019 and I chose the S1000R. It was mainly about the lower all up weight of the 1000 and the higher power output! After about 16 months, I've found that the S1000R gets a bit flighty when you are pushing on with high speed weaves and many owners including myself have not been able to dial that out of the bike. The 1250R felt unflappable when I test rode it and I miss that sense of security!
    Also, the midrange is a bit soft on the S1000 (unsurprisingly perhaps) and the 1250 feels a good bit stronger where you want it on the road. Then you have shaft drive, the TFT screen goodness and the boxer engine, which for me sounds more appealing! The 1250R has more character about it, so now I'm thinking about going the other way 😊
