Docking Station Walk Through | How to Connect Cables & Adapters to a Monitor

  • Being in computer support for almost 7 years I get a lot of inquiries on how to setup a docking station and what cables and/or adapters are needed to connect the monitors. With many of us working from home users are having setup their work laptop, docking station and monitors on their own.
    In this video I go through a walk through of the docking station I/O ports, cables and some adapters I normally use and recommend.
    Truth is there is an adapter for almost any setup but in this video I go through every port in the back of standard Lenovo docking station. Most computers, docking stations and monitors will have at least one OR two of the ports presented.
    Note: I only used one monitor for this video but walk through the way on how to connect multiple monitors (2 or more) with this docking station.

    Awesome! I tried to get some good information about using a docking station and because I'm from Germany, I tried to find german videos. But I couldn't find good content for me there. But your video is so helpful! Easy to understand and now I think it won't be a problem for me to use a docking station! So thanks a lot👍 and greetings from Germany 😊

    Thanks for this video. It helps with the wfh set up. I need another unit to connect my laptop to a second monitor as the screen is small. So i need the right cables to set it up.

    Hi Jonathan! I think you are actually an IT tech at my job! This video was super helpful! I was trouble shooting my work from home connections with my new docking station and you mentioned needing the correct battery cord and that ended up being my issue! I was using the laptop charger for the docking station power.

    What a great video...Now I understand all the connections between the docking station and the peripherals. However, I'm trying to set up dual monitors using an old Dell pc. The pc only has a VGA graphics card and USB-a ports. Can you explain how I could set up the connection between the pc and the incoming side of the docking station. Or is it not possible? Any assistance will be greatly appreciated.

    Awesome video sir - this is my situation: I had a Lenovo ThinkPad T540, a MS Surface Pro 7, a 4 channel KVM box (used to switch between the ThinkPad and the Surface Pro), 2 external monitors (that I use - not the laptop or surface pro screens). The ThinkPad had a, what I call a 'traditional' docking station (where you set the laptop on it and click it down - no need to plug in anything beyond that). I was just upgraded to a Lenovo ThinkPad T16 G1 and, sadly, it's not compatible with my existing docking station. So, they send a USB-C hub type docking station, but it doesn't have VGA connection (the KVM has VGA-only inputs). My question is, can I simply use a VGA to HDMI adapter to connect the KVM VGA cable to the new docking hub/station?

      Hi, does the new dock have display ports? If so I'd go from VGA to display ports to see if that works. Star Tech have good adapters and cables that may work. Hard to say for sure given your setup but it's possible that it'll work. I'm not sure if vga to hdmi will work but check startechs website to see if they have that cable or adapter.

    I followed exactly as you said but the moment I turn on the monitor it says power saving mode. This is the first time I am setting it up but dont know where the mistake is. Can you help

    • @infotechyeti
      @infotechyeti  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Maybe restart the laptop while it's docked. Some times when one has the laptop powered on then docks it for the first time Windows needs to register the correct drivers for it to work. Ideally I just restart and it'll work but also make sure the monitor is set to the right output. (VGA, DVI, Display Port, etc.)

    is it possible to connect the dvi cable into the monitor and display port into the dock?

    • @infotechyeti
      @infotechyeti  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I am not sure on your question but it is possible, I think, to go from DVI to display port but you may need the DVI to DP adapter.

    Is this docking station possible to work without ethernet cable just Wi-Fi signal directly to the laptop?

    • @infotechyeti
      @infotechyeti  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes. At times I use just wifi for my laptop if I need to borrow the network cable and it works just fine.

    • @infotechyeti

      The adapters I think anywhere from $10-$12? Not sure but it also depends on the kind of adapter. Cables are inexpensive.

      It allows you to have multiple I/O ports which connect peripherals like monitors, keyboard, mouse, USB drives and more to connect to one device (laptop) without having to manually connect and disconnect each cable. I hope this helps.
