Your video really helped me out. I guess I'm kinda dumb... I thought, "How hard can this be; should be logical; right?" Yeah... no. Finally got it on the second try. It really helps to see someone else do the docking because it's the little, tiny details that make it work. Once you've done it, it's no big deal, but in the meantime, starting out, the video was a Godsend for us technically challenged folks!!!!! ; )
I am glad the video was about to assist with operating the dock. Don’t feel like a fool, most mechanical docks the first time trying requires a little fiddling around to get it to sit correctly or dock. After that it’s pretty easy ask a few tries and know what to look or feel for but they are so much better in the long term in less damage to the ports and no need to worry about damaging thunderbolt cords over period of time.

Your very welcome Julliet Muthama, the other dock that works with this for the T490 is the thunderbolt 3 dock too but I personally perfer this Ultra dock more as it will last longer for both the laptop and the dock over time.

This docking covers the wind input of my T490, and cause the smart cooling throttle the CPU as 0.39 GHz, crazy..

Why does it have 135W adapter if it only outputs 65W?
It outputs 65W on the notebook, yes. But on the docking, you need more, cause all of the inputs, like USBs, monitors. They need more power. imagine you plug 3 monitors on it.
P14s AMD support this dock? Some said it can support but in the lenovo website there's no p14s in their compatibility list

Hi! So my desktop monitor is old and doesn’t have a camera or microphone so for Zooms etc & I need to use the laptop. Can i toggle between the desktop & laptop while it’s connected to the docking station?
Are you sure it has 2 Thunderbolts ports? my opinion is that it has only 2 x USB-C ( 10 Gbps ) C ports.
You could physically connect it to a MacBook by having a USB Type C extender cable plugged on one side to the dock and other to the Macbook, to see if it does anything :)
Can I buy two docking stations (one for my office and one for home)? My question is whether you can disconnect the laptop from the docking station at the office and plug it in later at home. Will it work right away? Do you lose work?

It should work. Is it would be just as unplugging your monitor and usb from work and plugging in the ones at home.( that’s the simplest theory i had in mind now )

Can you advise on whether to get this, versus the Thunderbolt 3 Gen 2 dock? This one is mechanical, while the Thunderbolt dock is just a cable. Seems like there are pros and cons to both? Which would provide best raw performance?
Hi IIIllllIIIIlllll, welcome to my videos. First off you need to make sure your laptop is supported by the Ultra Dock, which laptop do you have as not all will fit this mechanical dock or give enough power to charge the laptop as well. If you got an X1 extreme this dock doesn't support it and you have to get the thunderbolt 3 dock instead. As for raw performance comparison then the Ultra dock is much quicker as it has Displayport version 1.4 and HDMI version 2.0 where as the Thunderbolt 3 dock has Displayport version 1.2 and HDMI version 1.4. Hope that helps you.
BsianDad thanks, I am getting the X1 Carbon 7th gen. And the specific dock I am looking at is the Thunderbolt 3 Gen 2. The web site was kind of ambiguous but in one place on their site, it says the Gen 2 dock does have DP 1.4 and HDMI 2.0. So this is probably what changed with Gen 2, vs Gen 1. Do you still think it makes sense to get the mechanical dock, given this info? Thanks again
BsianDad To clarify, the Thunderbolt 3 Gen 2 dock part # that I’m looking at is 40AN0135US. And the mechanical Ultra dock is 40AJ0135US.
In my opinion and experience I prefer the mechanical docks as they fail less and last way longer as they don’t put as much strain on the USB-C port on both the cable side and on the laptop. The thunderbolt cable that Lenovo gives you with the thunderbolt 3 dock is really short, I wish they change that. If you don’t use the built in screen and like to save desk space it does allow you to store the laptop vertical while plugged into the thunderbolt 3 dock. Sorry yes you are right gen2 got upgraded to DP 1.4 and HDMI 2.0. Other thing to know is thunderbolt 3 has one extra usb3.1 port over the ultra dock. As monitor connection wise tb3 dock has 2x hdmi port but the ultra has only 1x hdmi but has vga support.

Great video but what if my second monitor is not displaying correctly I get a. Error message no dp signal from my device
Check the Display cable, try swaping them around with the one that works to rule out faulty DP cable. Also make sure in display settings you have it set to extended and not to display only to 1 and built in screen, I have commonly done this a few times.
Bsian, Can you tell me if you can connect the docking station to a KVM switch. I need to share keyboard/mouse/monitor between two systems during this shelter in place. If so, how would I go about connecting it?
Hi Billi Ferrell, if you using a KVM switch then you will be plugging the physical keyboard/mouse/monitor to the KVM switch directly in its input ports then you would connect the docking station to the KVM switch output ports and the other computers will be connecting to the other output ports of the KVM switch as well. Hope that makes sense.

I’m still waiting on my C940 Yoga to arrive, hopefully tomorrow, near 3 weeks after I put in the order 😰
Will me how what you think of the C940 when it arrives mate. It is annoying having to wait nearly a month for these computers to arrive. After many years of this process I have gone use to the near month turn around time from ordering to receiving but when its yours its still something you wish that's in your hands since payment been made.

Guys can someone help me if this docking station works with Lenovo Thinkpad P50 also .?
Connection wise it’s great but aesthetically it reminds me of the old manual credit card swipe machines, it would have been much nicer if it could have been docked vertically and not the ugly plastic look. I suppose you could maybe wrap it in a thin layer of leather but either way having the laptop docking lying down takes up much more space than vertical docks.
Very true mate, I would like to see Lenovo and Dell make a vertical dock to save space on the desk! A lot of the time I'm cleaning and moving items away to make space for the dock and where to put it when you have dual or triple monitor setups on smaller desks.
BsianDad Yes, with the recent switch to two monitors which I very much enjoy but I was also wondering how to create a clean and tidy desk out of the mess that it currently is, particularly as my PC also currently sits on my desk.
BsianDad I recently ordered a platform type thing with wheels for putting my pc on so I can put my pc on the ground on wheels and easily roll in and out as needed.
It's technically a corporate device. It's made for cubicles and such. It isn't made to look 'pretty'. It's made to be very functional and flexable. It rightly matches the Thinkpad and it's very well built. It is what it is.
Can I use wifi with this dock or do I have to have LAN?
If your laptop has the wifi module then you free to use the wifi instead of LAN when connected to this dock.
Does it come with a Kensington lock?
yes it does
is it possible to connect a t4700 or t480 or a t490?
All three Thinkpads you mention should work with this dock, technus =). I have already tested both the t480 and t490 on it already, didn't have a T470 with me.

Unfortunely you can't use it on any of the X1 Nanos, you need the thunderbolt docks to do it which is just a thunderbolt cable rather then the nice locking mechanism this one is.

Hi Sleezyfamily, this dock is only compatible with P52s, L580, L480, T580, P580p, T480s, T480, X1 Carbon Gen 6, X280, I have it working with the T490 and X1 Carbon Gen 7 as well.

No, you need a dock that connects from the bottom. This one connects from the side.
Hi Руслан Карыч, This dock won't work with your T440p, as Johnny Giger has pointed out the dock you need is to connect from the botton of the laptop (Thank you Johnny Giger =). The dock you need for the T440p is the ThinkPad 90W Ultra Dock (www.lenovo.com/au/en/accessories-and-monitors/docking/mechanical-docks/ThinkPad-Ultra-Dock-90-W/p/40A20090AU) sorry this is the Aussie version of the Lenovo site, you will need to find it in your country version of Lenovo site.

Hi Jojo Floflo, unfortunately the X1 extreme doesn’t support the mechanical docks I think you are limited to the Lenovo thunderbolt 3 docks.
BsianDad man that is a bummer tbh. I wanted a Laptop that i could essentially use as a desktop. I haven’t really heard anything good about the thunderbolt 3 docks.
@@elcacaro3849 it is, I'm not a big fan of the thunderbolt 3 dock too, I way perfer the mechanical docks, usually never fail too much and also saves your usb-c ports on the laptop too.
BsianDad what do you think i should do? This is almost a deal breaker for me. Which thinkpads/workstations are compatible with the mechanical dock station? What other alternatives do I have?
@@elcacaro3849 I'm so sorry I don't have much of good answer to that, since no mechanical docks will work with the X1 Extreme. You will have ask Lenovo how much power is required to charge your X1 Extreme Gen 1 with the spec you have then you can look into what other thunderbolt 3 docks.

Is it good for the battery? Does it recharge it? I had bad experience with a DELL xps13, the thunderbolt 3 was not enought to charge it and destroyied the battery...any triks for thisone and the x1 carbon?
