I think that this shows how messy being a Christian is. It can be ugly and humbling, but knowing that there is a community who holds you accountable while *holding* you as valuable is one of the most lovely things.

I think of Joseph and Potiphars wife. We flee from intentional sin. Some think it's OK to get as close to the line as possible but we are supposed to get as far away from that line as possible. We all sin...but...intentional sin is different.

    • @SamuelDrury

And now the entire internet is John's honorary accountability partner haha. In a way, that's embarrassing, yes. But it is better to be embarrassed on your way to Jesus than proud and cool on your way to destruction.

    • @BrodenADHD
      @BrodenADHD ปีที่แล้ว

“Christian’s” are the only organized group that is suppose to be like Jesus that kick their own until they bleed to death. This is not accountability.

I loved this and although I wasn’t hurt or offended, I forgive you, John. Accept you. EVERYONE deserves another chance. And dude, you’ve shown more regret than OJ. So it’s cool. You can stop apologizing and beating yourself up. You didn’t kill anyone.
Find me a grown-up who hasn’t hurt anyone, who doesn’t regret some of their actions and I’ll find you a liar!

Everyone hurts someone. Everyone does things that they later wish they hadn’t done.

If John had been a pastor, he would have been skewered. I'm not saying he should be. I'm just saying consider that. And please don't say "he's just a comedian". That man has more reach and people that look up to him than many a pastor. Again, I'm not saying he should be judged. I'm just saying we treat people who makes us laugh much, much, more softly than people who get us convicted. But that's human nature for you.

I have experienced a lot of shame for the same thing and although I don't think I've fully recovered from that shame, in the past year I've done what I never thought I'd be able to do and started opening up to other people about it who I thought would be disgusted by me for it. It helps me to remember that 1) God has a purpose for me, or He would have already called me up. 2) It's necessary to remember my past sin, but suffering of guilt and doubts over it means I believe our Lord Jesus Chist is not great enough to cover them. Which is simply not true.
Trust and follow God's words, not the devil's. Anything that contradicts God is from the devil. Memorizing scripture and the promises of our Savior is a good habit to counter this.

It was DEFINITELY Knoxville! Me, my wife, and kids were there and it was FANTASTIC!! This moment of vulnerability along with humor is something we've talked about often since. Thanks for being real...and bringing the funny!

As someone who has been a fan of yours for a long time, John; I just wanted to say that you are still an inspiration to me. To go through trials and make it out the other side is a great testimony, not something to be ashamed of. To speak the truth with boldness is what being a Christian is all about. Adding the extra layer of humor shows great character and spiritual development. I wish you continued success and happiness in Christ our Lord.

That was awesome and true John. I also went to a Christian rehab and what you say about feeling shame is so true.
That rehab helped me to not only want to be live, but to actually work out what it really means to be alive. I'm glad your rehab helped you to. Much love brother, I hope this is one of the comments you read :)

One of my biggest disappointments of last year was when your concert in Syracuse, NY was canceled. It would have been my second time seeing you. I love you, I think you are funny and your honesty is refreshing. Christians do shame others in the name of Christ’s love. I struggle with that because God is love and loves us through our failures then makes them our strength through Him.

Totally relate to the mom comments. I had four children under 6! My mom had 11 children and her only “holiday” was the few days she had in the hospital recovering from childbirth.
But,praise God you made it through your recovery and can bless God and others through your witness and testimony, John.

I wish we would normalize things like Rehab, Therapy, or Group Meetings. Going through life is not a thing that should be alone. Every person needs support and council in order to weave through the patterns of life. Far too often people do not find support in friends, family, society, or community. A person being left to their own devices in a feeling of loneliness and confusion can be devastating. When those who are supposed to love, accept, raise, nurture, and support are the ones who judge, belittle, and condemn, then life spirals out of control. Sadly for many people God isn't enough. Especially for those who have hypersensitivity to independence and self-reliance stemmed from abuse or trauma. Just saying the world is a crazy place and there is not only repercussions for our actions but also our reactions, emotions, and core personalities. Treat those tied to you by fate with kindness. Lead with compassion. You never know who is looking to you for survival.
