    Hi Andy, I hope you are doing well and you are on your way to rebuilding your shop! God bless you! I just finished rebuilding my lathe that I was given (50 years old) and just had my first practice at using it. When I get good at it I will have to try and make my own Gonk.. Though by that time it might be Christmas, so maybe a Christmas Gonk? Cheers and well wishes!

    I haven’t turned anything yet.
    Why did you turn the top of the hat first?
    Isn’t it the weakest part of your turning and run the risk of snapping it off while putting pressure on the rest of the piece while turning the body?

    • @AndysCornishCreations
      @AndysCornishCreations  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Bill...
      Good question...
      The piece was fully supported in the chuck with a tenon.. so I could have turned it without any tailstock support... but I always use the tailstock if I can just for additional safety..
      In this instance I could have turned the body 1st because it was wide enough to support the rest of the piece...
      But it's good practice to start turning at the opposite end to where it is supported...
      An example of this would be turning a finial (look up a video about it )
      It is supported in a chuck and then you work from the opposite end and turn it down in short segments right down to a thin piece ..
      but always having thicker timber to the left ( or headstock end ) giving support to the part that you have just turned...
      Taking the example to an extreme...
      Imagine using 50mm stock 150mm long supported in a chuck and you wanted to turn a 10mm thick rod...
      If you started turning at the left or chuck end then you would have 10mm of timber supporting a lump of wood 50mm x 100mm which would snap and fly off...
      But if you work from the right or tailstock end then you can turn it down to 10mm in 50mm stages all the way back to the chuck... safely...
      Sorry.. bit long winded but I hope it explains it...
      Anyway... welcome to what I think is a great hobby and have fun turning...
