    Excellent tutorial, this is the sort of thing I was looking for when I first started. My hat's off to you, good sir!
    If anyone's where I was, and have little to no confidence that you can pull it off, just give it a shot! You'll do fine, and you'll learn a bunch while you do it. In reality, I still have little to no confidence in my abilities, but now I have little to no confidence PLUS I've made a bunch of really cool pens out of Jake's blanks.

    awesome video! I literally turned my first pen today with a longwood Rockler kit. I wish I had seen this video first. I missed the barrel trimming step and turned and finished it. I learned what happens if your barrel is too long, lol. I was able to rework by making poplar press fit bushings since I don't yet have a barrel trimmer. All said and done, the pen now belongs to my wife and she loves it. I ordered more blanks and kits and will be getting a barrel trimmer. Thanks for the video that will help with my next pens. Great video for someone starting out in pen turning Jake.
    One question, Are you not concerned about moisture in the wood from wet sanding before applying the CA finish.
    I had issues when I first started turning pens, nearly 7 years ago, with the CA finish going hazy due to moisture in the wood.
    Take care Jake.
    Cheers, Huw

    • @JakeThompson
      @JakeThompson  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you Huw .. I use stabilized wood.. so I’m not concerned with the moisture.. if I had unstabilized wood I would definitely lit it dry out before finishing .

    That was a very good tutorial on pen turning. This should be a great video for someone just getting started at making pens. Picked up a couple ideas as well - I really like that cross-cut sled you used to cut the pen blank, I'm going to make one for my bandsaw. I've never had good luck with CA as a finish on pens so started using melamine lacquer and have had much better success -- that's just me; others such as yourself seem to be able to make CA work well. Only downside to melamine is that one needs to let it cure overnight before knocking it back and polishing.

    • @JakeThompson
      @JakeThompson  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you Mark.. I wonder what the problem is with the CA finish.. Maybe we can figure it out. 🦾🦾

  • @leliaguinn5307
    @leliaguinn5307 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    cool pen. Is there a way to get the same shine without using the CA for a finish?

    • @JakeThompson
      @JakeThompson  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you Leak.. when I do resin only pens, I skip the CA finish and go right to magic juice… I have done thst with hybrids too but the CA makes it just a bit better I think.
