    Great story. I commuted from Edinburgh to Glasgow in the early eighties on a 500 Pantah. Ate batteries if you let it but was reliable as hell and a pleasure to ride. Oh the whirlies roundabout at 7 AM!!

    Thanks for the review. I really appreciate it. I'm currently at the only point in my life I'll ever be at, with enough disposable income to go out and just buy a new bike. I expect kids will be demanded soon, and by the time that's over, I'll be surprised if there's much fun available at all that still powered by fossil fuels. I've got an old '56 Velocette, '79 Guzzi Lemans, an '88 650 HawkGT(BROS) and a '98 zx7r, and I love em all to bits for different reasons, (and I can convert them all to run on alcohol if I have to), but always wanted that Ducati.
    It would have been a 916, but, my Mrs is German, and from a family obsessed with things being perfect, in order, reliable, of quality, and her dads told her all about older Ducati reliability and practicality. The other odd thing is that she's consistently encouraging the purchase, and she basically hates motorbikes. Dirty, smelly, dangerous, noisy, impracticle. This might be because I do a lot of miles, and I have to fix my bikes quite a lot as a result, (and that time could be spent fixing the house). The newest is 19 years old, and has a LOT on the clocks. In the past few months, I've had the original rad problems (fixed by replacing with one shipped from glorious un-salty California - £100 delivered to my door - gracias) Rearsets gear lever break (corroded through where joins the linkage), replaced front master cylinder, brake discs/pads, did my clearances, oil etc. I've got a spare set of forks ready to strip and replace the stanchions on, as I'll need that in a few K. It happens in gluts, and then I need to spend a chunk of cash to keep it roadworthy, and she thinks that would be better spent on a 'problem free' new bike.
    She's also overheard all my youtubing while I learned about all these new electronics, cornering ABS, cornering traction control (both of which, I would rather like, as my commute in the UK is both long at 130 mile round trip, and there's often a sort of 'lucky-dip' type of surface around blind bends, maybe a giant puddle, maybe gravel after the puddle has gone, mud from farm traffic, diesel spills, etc...) and wants it to have all the latest and greatest 'rider saftey aids' cos she doesn't want me to die, which is nice, but it means I can't slip a 916, or a 1098/848 in under the radar, and I think even the 959 panigale lacks a lot of it (I'd have liked the 1098/1198, last of the line really, belts, steel trellis, fits my body too), and leaves me with the latest crop of superbikes. I'm partial to a Kawasaki, so thinking of a zx10r, plush suspension, good brakes, all the electronics, but no downchange on the quickshifter, unless you buy an RR (so I probably would cos its only another 2 grand), but, kinda, standard Jap styling - nothing to write home about. Not reeeeally into the S1000RR - it just doesn't make me need it, even though the heated grips would be lush in winter. I'm sure it's great, but somehow feels too utilitarian, and I don't need to win races on tracks. I'll be trying a fireblade SP2, just for shits and giggles, but I don't want it. I just fancy a go on the bike that McGuinness and Martin couldn't stay on, and getting a test ride is easy here. Rather buy an RC45! Or even an RC51. or both. Yamaha - I'm sure its great, but I'm not into it , it doesn't fit me, I'm tall - rather have a TZR250, (which I'd have a reason to be too big for), a Supermono, or an OWO2 for the money. Suzuki? no interest somehow. KTM - nope. But anyway, yeah, a good objective review - It'd be nice if I could find reviews of the BMW, the Kwak and the Duke all having done 3 British winters, but I think your review is about as close as I'm gonna get with that.
    Is the headlight any good?
    Great music.

    • @acepantstibs1587
      @acepantstibs1587 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Is it weird that I worry that, if I buy a 1299, in 20 years time, I might not be able to find petrol for it, and then due to all the electronics, it just won't run and I won't be able to ride it?

    • @FancyAnimal
      @FancyAnimal  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you buy the Panigale S model, it comes equipped with LED headlights which are considerably brighter than conventional lighting. 1299S Panigale, 1290 SuperDuke, SuperDuke GT, Yamaha MT10, and Indian Scout are bikes I would check out.

    • @FancyAnimal

      An A/C unit may slip out of an apartment window 4 stories above your head as you walk by, so I guess you could worry about that instead.

    • @acepantstibs1587
      @acepantstibs1587 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is a valid point, but you think we have A/C here? ;) Germans call this 'Worrying about unlaid eggs'.
      I worry more about smashing into a deer, in the dark fog and murk of winter, but not until it nearly happens. Seriously though - they have the whole countryside to stand around in.

      Jesus, never buy a Buell then! I had an XB12-R from new and it started to corrode after 50 dry miles. It had 2 recalls for items in it's first 6 months and the overall build quality was pretty shoddy.
      In comparison, my 1991 Ducati 900ss had very few problems in the 10 years I had it. I had 1 'major' problem over that time when the voltage regulator/rectifier overheated and caught fire. (It was Japanese, a Nippondenso unit) I replaced it with an aftermarket item that was higher rated and never had anymore problems from it.
      I did 32,000 miles and had it serviced for valve clearances only. Everything else I did myself. Oil filters were incredibly cheap as they are the same item as fitted to a Citroen 2CV! The only thing I would have changed would be the electrical cabling dealing with the starter motor. Too weedy. Beefier cables would have got rid of the problem I had with the bike's poor starting. I had no more problems with it than I had with my previous 3 Japanese bikes.

    I figured you were an engineer after RTV. By Hall Effect I was certain.
    I owned a couple Duc STs. Put about 35k miles on each. They were great. What did break was always comp'd by Duc. Even had chrome flake off the rockers a year and many thousands of miles out of warranty and they even covered that. My last one was in a shop that caught fire. If it wasn't, I might still have it.
    Personally, my neck can't handle that upward cock I need to ride the Panni's, but they are beautiful.
    I bought a Thruxton 1200 that has essentially the same riding position as my old STs. Even steers like it. Twin is similar too, if less clutch racket. The Brits have won me over, but I still root for Ducs on race day!

    • @FancyAnimal
      @FancyAnimal  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      saddlebag ya I own an engineering biz. Should I tell people I also own a Honda, or will that ruin it for the haters? Not many people know about the ST. You should try a new Supersport just for kicks. What do you mean it caught fire? Thruxton had some charm...see my Hawaii review. I have the opposite problem...my back hurts riding upright. It's nice to have a bike for every chapter of our lives. What a country!

    • @saddle8bag
      @saddle8bag 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've owned or rented about every major brand besides Harley. Several Hondas too. Even a Goldwing. I like various things about all of them.
      The Supersport is tempting, but two is my limit. I also have a Versys 1000 for touring around with the Mrs. Been using it to tool around the local fire roads with the Adventure crew too.
      My bike didn't catch fire, but the shop did. They had to claim everything in it on their insurance...including mine.
      You rode the old Thruxton. New one is a completely different animal as are all the new Triumph "Modern Classics."

    Just a quick question to owners of Ducati 899 and 959 2012 to 2014 within 18000kms to 30000kms owners, have you spend loads of money on mechanical or electrical issues in 2017 or 2018 or had overheating issues or some other issue which took ages to get fixed or never got fixed? As I am looking to buy 2014 899 with 19000kms?

    Thanks for doing this video, was thinking of buying ducati but I know now to say far away . it is true what they say ( u spend less time on the road and more time in the work shop ) luckily u still have warranty most don't . I'm surprised that ducati didn't tell ya to stop riding it so much lol

      Yup without the warranty I would have had to deal with some annoyances; nothing that would leave me stranded, but headaches for sure, The biggest fault was with Ohlins, not Ducati.

      Pirelli Diablo SuperCorsa SP. They come stock on the Panigale 1199 / 1299. I literally ground them down to the fiber reinforcements. Such a sticky tire in the dry or wet...they've even seen a little snow ; )

    Great video man! You had me laughing throughout the vid.
    On a serious note, I am considering buying a 2016 Panigale 1299S next week that has 21k miles from the dealer in Tampa. It has had the 15k service and is still under warranty until November 2018, with the option to purchase the extended warranty. In your opinion, would you bike this bike? Thanks!

    • @FancyAnimal
      @FancyAnimal  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      What are they asking for it $$$? Ask to see the service and warranty claim history. Coolant leaks can be a recurring, but fixable issue on the 1299. If I knew the history of the bike or could talk to the original owner, I would def buy it. Otherwise I'd look for another bike with lower miles.

    • @TheDucatiPilot
      @TheDucatiPilot 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for responding Fancy Animal. So I did more research and shopping over the weekend and found a 2017 1299S with only 2400 miles and has the Akro exhaust already installed. Buying for $20,200 and it still has warranty for at least a year. Also had an in-depth conversation with the dealership about this 2017 and it's service and maintenance history. It was sold and maintained at the same dealership and they guy that owned it, only traded it in to get the new V4S. I think we have a winner!

    My 1299 panigale is one year old, it's given me so much trouble, it has now got almost 5000km, it's still under warranty but it's annoying, new electronic dash, new QS module x 2, been in the stealer 3 times and still leaks water, now Ducati tell me it's made to leak?..

    • @FancyAnimal
      @FancyAnimal  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry to hear that. Sounds like you have a lemon and should pursue the lemon law. I'm passed 40,000km and never had dash , QS, or coolant issues. Where is the leak coming from? The bike is not made to leak and can be very dangerous. If you don't pursue the lemon law, find another dealer ASAP!

    I'm wondering if buying a DEMO bike might have something to do with a lot of the problems?
    It could have possible been wrecked previously and then repaired by the dealer. At that point they decided to allow it to be a Demo bike. I'm sure you received a very good deal on it because it was the bike you ended up buying. However, coupled with the fact you added unusual high miles in a short amount of time along with the bike purchase being a Demo,
    maybe buying A used Ducati is not a good idea. I love your bike though.

      Seems that Ducati’s which have been dropped tend to develop tons of leaks. I know a couple guys who simply dropped them and one low sided which lead to both suspension and motor leaking. You have a pretty good theory on what may have cause all the premature wear.

    I would never buy a demo bike. Or any used supersport for that matter. Always brand new so you can properly break them in. There is a lot of debate about myths surrounding a break-in but anything other than the OEM is just asking for issues like this one. Since Ducati has been bought out, the reliability in their builds has gone up tremendously. I've owned two and just bought my third and haven't had ONE SINGLE ISSUE. I've ridden two of them cross country as well (FL --> CA) so I put a lot of miles on them. Don't let this put you off from Ducs.

    • @FancyAnimal
      @FancyAnimal  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Christopher Neil you must be new to the channel. Every problem listed in the video is on the TSB...has nothing to do with being a demo. With over 30k on it, I've had less problems than other Panigale owners. BTW as a former automotive engineer, I can tell you breakin is overrated and one of those tropes OCD bikers cling to like "if they really want to steal your bike, there's nothing you can do." I wouldn't hesitate to buy another Ducati. Cheers!

    • @ChristopherNips81
      @ChristopherNips81 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Fancy Animal, if you say so. I can only speak for myself but with five cars, six motorcycles, and around 230K miles between them all, the biggest issue I have ever had was a dead battery. Maybe I’m OCD because I do everything by the book, but hey, it has worked out thus far.
      I’ve got a x-country trip coming up this summer on my 959 Corse; 8000 miles in a month (FL -> CA -> NYC). In all fairness to you, I’ll post a 22K mile update when the time comes as I put a lot of miles on my bikes.
      Cheers.

    I owned a 999 back when they first came out. I wanted to love her, I really did. I saw more problems with her than my prior 30 bikes put together. It was like being married to a porn star who is also prone to committing domestic violence. Like every domestic violence victim, I thought it was me. That I needed to change. That things would get better. I finally realized that things wouldn’t get better right about the time the top end blew up. Ducati bought it back because it was such a piece of shit. I blew the dust off my R1, which had been sitting for almost 6 months. Fired right up as if I just rode it the day before. I’ll never be mesmerized by Ducati again.
