I've lived in Vegas the last 50+ years & saw all the greats of the day, Frank, Dean, Elvis, Tony, Wayne, Sammy. Sammy was the ultimate entertainer, performer. He could do it all & he did it all.
Oh yes, he could certainly sing. He was an entertainer he could sing, dance, act and more. He was truly one of a kind! Such a shame we don't have quality entertainers like this these days!
@@dancer6971 Frank was a wonderful friend for Sammy. In the beginning, Frank saw Sammy perform, went backstage and told him to come see him perform. Two times went by, and Sammy wasn't there. Frank asked him why, and Sammy said they wouldn't let him in. Frank needed that job, but when he heard that, he tore up his contract and left! When Sammy lostan eye, Frank paid all the medical bills. There were plenty of other times Frank stood up for Sammy, and I think most people would do what Frank did!
He knew how to develop the narrative of a song. He understood how to use phrasing and exploit the lyric to create tension and anticipation from the audience and of course he knew how to deliver a finale that completely satisfied expectation. He was a masterful storyteller with perfect pitch and timing. As for the actual instrument in that larnyx and diaphram, what control !
18 year old gen Z here... i completely understand what you mean.. Sam is my favorite vocalist/entertainer of all time, not one artist could live up to his name
I loved to hear him sing but more so when he danced. I attended his cocert in Amsterdam long long ago, still have the programme. He died too soon. Rest in piece
Actually, I remember that he was extremely popular!! And he was in the Rat Pack, all loyal and loving for each other!! And all of them so, so talented!!
If it's even possible, this live version at around 60 years old - just five years before his passing - far exceeds his brilliant studio version from 1968. Just incredible. The man was on a level that I'm afraid we will not ever see again. Awesome.
Artists of today have no desire to sing like this. There is no one out there that can even come close to singing like Sammy. He was one of the best entertainers of that time.
He certainly sings like someone with a deep, feeling nature. And that gorgeous voice!! My gen was so spoiled. I grew up in the 1950s, probably the luckiest time ever to be a child, because of my wonderful parents' gen. Everyone should read Tom Brokaw's book The Greatest Generation. ♥️
I saw Sammy Live at the Sands in Vegas with my parents when I was only 18. I had been a Rat Pack fan of all their music. Ills saw Sammy at a stadium in St Paul Mn with Frank Sinatra & Dean Martin in my 2nd yr of college. It was the best live performance I have ever experienced. I am 75 yrs old now, I have 7 of Sammy's CDs, 4 Sinatra & and 2 Dean Martin... Still enjoy listening to them all.
This song..his voice..the power..the vibrato..superb 👌..despite his smoking. And to think he died of throat cancer due to that bad habit. It's a miracle he could even sustain that last note..considering he even had a cigarette in his fingers while singing. A class act..bravooo 👏👏👏!!!
You know when a masterful singer is doing his stuff, when you can hear a pin drop in the audience and the finale ends like a Disney production. Just spectacular !
Over the years when I find myself feeling a little low, just not where I need to be mentally, I find this song, put on the earphones, and like magic! that last note brings life back to my very soul.
I love this song *SO MUCH* . I just wish Sammy was still alive so I could tell him the feelings this song gives me. and all of Sammy's appearances on David Letterman (both interview and singing) are *CLASSIC" , people, do yourself a favor and when your done watching this go and watch the Letterman appearances,
Words can't describe how great Sammy Davis jr.was.sammy was the greatest entertainer that ever lived.there was absolutely nothing that he didn't do without perfection.there was never a time Sammy didn't give the audience the best show possible.

I remember we all sat watching this on the telly that very night in Perth ...my dad sat with tears in his eyes waxing lyrical about the purity of this wonderful man's soul and talent ..Perth absolutely embraced Sammy Davis Junior during that Telethon ...and rightly so ..🙏
Always described himself as a dancer who had a few hit songs. Too modest. That wonderful baritone, and the way he gets inside a song and uses his voice as an instrument. One of the all-time greats.
Sammy was the most spectacular entertainer of all time….Sammy’s voice is the best….his dancing is the best…his acting is the best….his interpretation of singing is unparalleled….This man is so spectacular…And “Gracious” in his performances….Sammy is the best!
Sammy tops all of his performances with phantom of the Opera. You were great. And you are still entertaining us.thank God for what little time you shared with us.
He just looked so relaxed and natural up on that stage. It was as if he had been doing it his entire life. Oh wait, he has been doing it his entire life from childhood. He was the master at dancing, singing and acting because that is all he had ever known. Thank you Mr. Davis for the many years of great entertainment.
He was truly one of a kind! He could quite literally do it all. Dance, sing, act and much more. A true legend of his time and still so now! Such a shame we don't have quality entertainers like this these days!
All D love. One of my all-time favorites..an out rages artist on all levels, a consummate musician, an absolute people’s entertainer. What can you say the great Sammy Davis Junior.. Frank Sinatra definitely loved Sammy beyond words what a great pal
You don't hang perform and hang around with Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin if you don't have their respect. That's how much respect and admiration Frank and Dean had for Sammy's talents. 😊
For some reason I thought of this song , and by this artist... I now know why!!!, such a beautiful delivery, and arrangement... they don’t make EM like this no more!!!!!
Mr Showman himself, the legendary Sammy Davis Jr. One of the trail blazers who made show business what it is today. What a class A" act he was. Love and miss you 💞 RIP
Like most people, I have a bucket list of things to see and do before I die............. sad to say Sammy who was near the top of the list passed away just before that dream could come true.

Well crafted voice, wrapped the song in pathos and emotion. Nice live version, but I do/ did prefer the recorded version on Reprise 1962. Pop version, radio version. Thanks, Sammy Davis. Vive les retro freaks ...
Yes. Strictly speaking if we are honest, 😆 Sammy was the best interpreter of songs even though others may have been given that title. if for no other reason than the inherent dramatic quality of his instrument! He played it like a master violinist on a Stradivarius!

such a privildge and so luckyy, have you ever seen Dean by any chance?
I went reluctantly to one of his shows in Reno and have loved him ever since.

The fact he was a heavy smoker makes it more amazing.
