@@normanclatcher Yes! There is something deeply compelling about this performance, the fluidity of his voice, the magnificent swelling of the horns, the smooth ease of his body to the music. And the poignancy of the lyrics. Such pleasure here!
I worked in the Grosvenor House Hotel in London in 1970's In one week he did eight concerts, midnight matinees on the Friday and Saturday. Lionel Blair was the support act. I have never witnessed more powerful performances nor such colossal crowd reaction. Some of the biggest names in showbusiness, Mama Cass, Cat Stevens, Roger Moore Joan Collins ...he brought tears to their eyes through his singing dancing and stories of life...his own. I was a wine butler in the Great Room. None of us who worked that week would ever forget what we'd witnessed

Black, white, Jewish, or Peuto Rican Mr. Sammy Davis was one of THE greatest entertainers to ever grace a stage, club, or movie set! Sammy you are greatly missed! 🥲
Best singer ever? Too many brilliant ones to choose from, especially including the ladies. However, as an all round entertainer, either himself or Travolta for the men. Cher for the ladies. ❤😊😅
"He's living it" Like he said, he hated the song because it reminded him of his possible end. He ended up like most Black performers, ravished by drugs and died broke. The above was his fear, sadly it became 100% true. The man could do it all, dance, sing, act, imitate, played 5/6 instruments.
I miss this man so very much. He was a friend of mine, and I thank you for making these videos available. They are priceless. In the 1980's, I was a daily columnist for The Sacramento Union. Life in Sacramento in those days was very dull, so I asked Harrah's Club at Lake Tahoe if they would like someone to review some of their shows. I was surprised that a major paper so close to Tahoe did not have regular entertainment reviewers, so Harrah's was very happy to have me come up from time to time to review the shows. My first big-time review was Sammy. We hit it off instantly. After the first meeting, his manager Murphy Bennett would call me whenever they would be coming back to the resort. We met probably eight times. The interview always took place in the penthouse "Stars' Suite" atop Harrah's, then I'd go to the dinner show, and be invited backstage afterwards for another less formal interview. I was able to bring my wife at the time to meet him, as well. The times we spoke and laughed and "giggled," as he liked to call it, are precious memories for me. In the mid-80's, he was having a hard time quitting drinking. I told him I had recently quit and would be happy to help him. We worked together on this, and he was soon able to stop altogether. But the cigarettes were something else. There was always a big bowl of Pall-Malls on his coffee table, and this was one habit he just could not beat. The cigarettes were what finally got him . I have to tell you this is one of the most fascinating people I have ever met. I absolutely cherish my time with him and Murphy Bennett, and I was heartboken the day he died. I never took my friendship with him for granted. Before he died, we had talked about collaborating on a cook book together that would be aimed at people trying trying to quit booze. We were going to call it "Booze Blues." And then he died. It always fascinated me that wherever he went, he brought this huge chest filled with cooking utensils with him -- and Harrah's had its own five-star restaurant! I come on TH-cam many times to replay these classic songs and to rekindle my memories with my pal Sammy. Thank you again to whomever is making these posts.......Peter Anderson
Peter Anderson thank you for sharing your beautiful memories. My grandmother was a huge fan of Sammy’s and I remember sitting with her and watching him on the variety shows in the 70’s. Tonight I was watching an episode of a television show called Billions, and the Mr. Bojangles song was played in the beginning and at the ending, and it was so moving. I immediately logged on here to watch Sammy’s performance and it felt so comforting. Then, I happened upon your comment and it really made my heart feel good. He was a treasure and I know heaven is a beautiful place because he is there. Thanks again for sharing.
Hey Kathy Hill -- Very cool of you to share your feelings with me about you and your grandmother. I know exactly what you mean. It sounds trite, but he didn't just sing the song, he WAS the song. You would've loved him in person. Incredibly sharp, witty, well-informed and very current. I wasn't prepared to like him so much. All that bad press he got about hugging Nixon at The White House, all that flashy bling, the playboy lifestyle, rumors about his flirting with the Satanic church -- I was very wary at our first meeting. He converted me in about five minutes! One of the most charming, caring, inquisitive and talented individuals I have ever met. Luckily, the evidence of his talent is with us forever. I did all I could to show my appreciation to him, but I still have these lingering doubts that I didn't thank him enough. An absolutely remarkable human being. People who disparage him without having met him should check their biases at the door. Thanks again, Kathy, you made my night!
Peter Anderson doesn’t sound trite at all and I agree with every word. There are other people who sing this song, but you’re right, it embodies him and this is the only version I wanted to hear this evening. Glad I made your night because you sure made mine. Sending you a high five from Michigan. Rest well on your pillow knowing you found a kindred spirit across the miles.❤️

Nah Beyonce shows are WAY more entertaining. She doesn't just stand there and sing with a couple tap dance numbers lol. No disrespect to Sammy but what he did just doesn't cut it today.
His autobiography is "Yes I can". Grew up on the tail end of vaudeville; with his two uncles. He wrote he knows that sometimes they went hungry so they could buy food for him. A great life.
True!!! And the great thing about Sammy was he was a gifted entertainer. There are but a few that were in his league and in that league Sammy was the Absolute Best!!!
I'm taking care of a 94 year young man. We listen to this song everyday. Sammy was and still is a very talented man. Thank you Sammy for this song. He sings this song everyday ❤
This is a song of people who... tried. This song kills me because the Mr. Bojangles I knew, was my grandfather. He was a preacher, he did great and exciting things, but he didn't quite meet his goals. Bojangles cell was in jail, my grandfather's cell was his room. The man tried. He could have gone far... the man tried.
No one, absolutely no one does Mr. Bojangles like Sammy Davis Jr. He delivered that song with style, grace, feeling, heart, and meaning. My favorite by this true Legend.
Pure, raw talent. Sammy was a tiny little guy, blind in one eye, had a lot of adversity in his life, but nothing could keep him down. What an amazing entertainer he was, just awesome.

Like always am listening this great master piece,,,,From Chile...Regards..Sammy was the beloved Frank´s friend..when you listen this ones...you know why...amazig times...incredibles artists....actors..singres....musicians..
From start to finish, his performance is mesmerising. You're hanging on his every word as he sings his way through this story of a song. Simply brilliant!
I hope Mr.Davis realizes he never became Mr.Bojangles because even after these 30 years after his passing people have never forgotten how talented, beautiful and gifted Sammy Davis Jr was. RIP Legend
I caught this purely by fluke. I’m still crying as I type my comment. I was a little boy when I seen this on t.v and Mr. Sammy Davis Jr captured my heart then as he has now. It was a time of happiness for me and my family. Mr. Davis was the epitome of a stage performer and was all class and grace. I was going to get into how today’s performers rarely show their talent or lack there of but Sammy Davis Jr. does it the best. Thank you for the memories…
One of my most favorite live performances ever...God bless Sammy Davis Jr...grew up listening to him, Frank Sinatra , Dean Martin, Andy Williams, Jack Jones...Mr. Davis was the most extra ordinary of them all though, a most gifted, talented singer, actor, dancer and with a great sense of humor to boot...rest in peace, Mr Davis, Sir...God bless all abundantly who allowed this precious video to be shared with all of us "music l overs"
The more you watch this, the more incredible it is. He hardly moves out of conversation mode, yet he's pitch perfect and hits every note. Takes the roof off if he needs to. He's about 60 and "clicks his heels" for real. You hardly notice the dance moves, but they're faultless. The vaudeville is always there, he feeds off the orchestra and vice versa. Somebody in Germany has gold-plated memories!
Although he didn’t write the song, it could have easily described his own life. His father and uncle took him on the road when he was 3 or 4 years old as part of their show. So the Mr. Bojangles he implores to come back could easily refer to one of those men.
@@WilliamsDad1989 Yes but this song is not about the tap dancer Bill Robinson, nicknamed Bojangles (born Luther Robinson). Mr. Walker said that the song was about a homeless guy he met in a prison cell in 1965.
My grandma loved Sammy Davis Jr. She passed away this morning, so here I am, listening to one of her favorite singers. This song will stick with me forever.
That’s lovely that you can remember your grandma through his music, that’s the sign of legend they never really die they live in their music which in turns makes legends of the ppl who loved them..
BRAN8222 So sorry for your loss. I’ll tell you something, dad passed away but he was revived and was alert and speaking. We asked what he saw, he was in heaven and he saw God and many, many rainbows and palm trees. Other beautiful things that I want to keep private. God bless your Grandma and may she dwell in the kingdom of the lord for ages and ages.
Sammy Davis will always be, not only a Great Performer, along with his magnificent voice...He'll always be A Nice Man, and a GentleMan...God Bless Him..
This may be the best thing I have seen in years. Truly a classic for all ages. Golden era of actually talented, engaging artists that defined true entertainment for all. Lots of so called "singers" out there. Lots of so called "actors" out there. This man defined being a "Performer". When he puts on the hat, trims the brim, you can see his transformation into his craft.
I totally agree...a true entertainer who did need flames or eat fire, or hug stage props but just the command of the stage and audience with his TALENT. I had the wonderful pleasure of meeting Sammy on more than one occasion while we were both entertaining in Las Vegas at the same venue. He also caught my show. I Will always remember your kindness and the musical advice you gave to me ...REST IN PARADISE SAMMY DAVIS. I'd like to think of myself as a true entertainer who can engage an audience by just BEING: Loretta Holloway "I've Never Been To Me" :th-cam.com/video/MKqAax7MuGg/w-d-xo.html
I was stationed in Germany in the 1970s and still remember how grateful I was for Sammy's kindness because he significantly lowered performance ticket prices for US military in the area. As i recall he had been stationed in Germany himself years before & remembered who he was. I was floored by the breadth of his talent: performing in person he was in his element. On TV, looking into a camera maybe not s much. Sorry if name icon comes up 2x. Computer glitch.
I met Mr. Davis when I did green room studio duty for the TODAY show in 1978. He was so gracious and friendly to all of us normally “jaded” staff who turned out en masse to meet him. I will never forget it❤️. A true national treasure.
He lived without God in life. He'll live without God in death. God nowhere promises peace without an authentic relationship with the very giver of life and peace itself. Don't shoot the messager. The Gospel of Jesus Christ has never been ambiguous to those who truly seek it
@@karenknaggs3223 He WORKED at developing his brilliant talents, singing, dancing, comedy, story telling, acting...his WHOLE life and became a MASTERFUL performer. Just Pure Talent - no tricks / gimmicks / gadgets - not an auto tune or Loop pedal in sight....pure Skill talent and class The one the only Mr Sammy Davis Jr

A performance is just fake usually and sadly. Sammy Davis JR was a hardcore satanist doing extremely wicked things that lacked heart, morality, and sentiment. Run and cry out to Jesus Christ, for with Him is all the heart of life and true light. Sammy davis knew about and was working for the devil. The music and entertainment industry is demonic and wicked sadly. Eternity is real, repentance is a gift from God and a real gift that has nothing to do with modern religion. God bless.
I think they are out there. Experienced lovely music entertainment from 2 young fellows playing multiple instruments and singing at a simple weekly antique show
So do I. I ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️. Anything Sammy Davis Jr. done on screen, stage,, television, etc. is MAGIC! Happy 97th birthday (belated!) and Thank you Sammy for putting smiles that last for a while 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾!
I can say i’m truly honored to have heard all the stories from my family that had him around. My great grandmother was a dance performer and worked with Josephine Baker,Billy Holiday, and most of all Sammy. When she was out dancing he would watch over my grandmother backstage and make her laugh with all of his impressions, dancing, and singing was actually became her godfather. Truly a nice man from I heard from everyone! His voice is storytelling for sure ♥️
@@peterhall728 yeah she just recently passed this past November, lived to be 97… So she had pictures of all these instances with celebs hanging on her walls and love to tell the tales of em. Always explained Sammy was the most humble and down to earth person she’s met.

he said one time he sang this song because he felt like bojangles and one day would lose everything like bojangles did..that is why he was very emotional while singing this song
For real! There is nothing negative anyone can say about the late great Sammy Davis Jr! I love that there is no trolling I see on this thread. You all has me at Sammy was great!
I must have been 4, maybe 5, when I first remember this song in my life. I'd be broken each time, crushed to my very little angelic soul...and my Mom would reprimand me for crying. She just didn't get it. The value of a life. She just didn't understand. I still cry. To my very old and not so pur but still wholesome soul. Please forgive me for all I couldn't do to change the world.
My father used to sing this song to me as a little girl. I used to want him to sing that song to me over that and to swing me around fast. Hard to believe that was 45 yrs ago or more and my Dad has been gone 8 yrs. Life is a mess and I miss him terribly. Some day Ill get to see him again.

@@LeylaDerben I'm a kid and I agree with the second statement, but the second statement I can slightly disagree. I personally don't live in America, but the artists there don't have as much talent as the older generation, it's all autotuned now. However, autotune does make some good music.
Derben Leyla I disagree . He was more popular then the guy who wrote the original and this version is like more 🤷♀️and that’s just being honest . There isn’t talent specific to old school talent and that’s the truth . Especially tap dancing , swinging , singing . It’s all different . It’s not bad now a days but it definitely cannot compare
Just a reminder to those who have forgotten - real music and entertainment is still alive today. Don't let the internet cloud your mind. Just because your taste of music isn't in the mainstream doesn't mean all hope in the world is lost. There's more people than you may think that still love and cherish this music. Still to this day pulling inspiration. Just like with comedy, music is subjective.
WHAT a performance! I am AWED! Sammy THRIVED---because he developed his talent since he was young boy. He WORKED at it for DECADES and perfected it and became one of the VERY BEST singer/ dancer performers EVER! Sammy, Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Ray Charles, were the best (male) singer/performers---but Sammy had the extra of his seamless dance skills...a BRILLIANT performer!
Have you watched the movie "Waiting for Bojangles"? I certainly recommend. It's one of the greatest movies I have watched and I admit crying so much at the end. It's full of lessons and love and emotions. It's where I learned about this song since the main characters' favorite song is Mr. Bojangles. A movie for the soul with music that heals.
He's not singing a song, he's telling a story. A priceless performance.

Such a one in life time star.genius

The artist of all time
I caught this purely by fluke. Thank you for the memories…
its times like this i realize how important youtube can be
I worked at Harrah's Lake Tahoe back in the day. I had the pleasure of seeing his shows there. Sammy Davis Jr. was the ultimate showman.
Would have been nice to see this on MTV

The more you watch this, the more incredible it is. He hardly moves out of conversation mode, yet he's pitch perfect and hits every note. Takes the roof off if he needs to. He's about 60 and "clicks his heels" for real. You hardly notice the dance moves, but they're faultless. The vaudeville is always there, he feeds off the orchestra and vice versa. Somebody in Germany has gold-plated memories!
So true, I can’t stop watching it‼️❤️
Although he didn’t write the song, it could have easily described his own life. His father and uncle took him on the road when he was 3 or 4 years old as part of their show. So the Mr. Bojangles he implores to come back could easily refer to one of those men.
Let's also not forget the drummer switching flawlessly from brushes to sticks then back to brushes.

Class act 👌🏻
An era when shows had full orchestras and songs that told stories. Incredible
Was just thinking the same thing. How "entertainment" has changed
You are so sweet
I totally agree...a true entertainer who did need flames or eat fire, or hug stage props but just the command of the stage and audience with his TALENT. I had the wonderful pleasure of meeting Sammy on more than one occasion while we were both entertaining in Las Vegas at the same venue. He also caught my show. I Will always remember your kindness and the musical advice you gave to me ...REST IN PARADISE SAMMY DAVIS. I'd like to think of myself as a true entertainer who can engage an audience by just BEING: Loretta Holloway "I've Never Been To Me"

Oh, how wonderful. Thank you for telling us.
Bill Robinson. Right? Sammy could do it all. His signature song, of course.
Sammy never wrote this song, some old nobody did year's before Sammy!
No one can perform this song like Sammy! He was so classy, a gentleman with great talent!
I'm an old Goth/Punk/Rock music lover but this is still one of my favourite ever songs. His phrasing etc is just amazing.... Keep dancing Sammy
I met Mr. Davis when I did green room studio duty for the TODAY show in 1978. He was so gracious and friendly to all of us normally “jaded” staff who turned out en masse to meet him. I will never forget it❤️. A true national treasure.

I don’t know why I’m crying. So touched by this amazing performance ❤️
God bless.

@Mārcis Bukovskis Because crappy music is popular. The biggest problem is bad songs.
@@LeylaDerben I'm a kid and I agree with the second statement, but the second statement I can slightly disagree. I personally don't live in America, but the artists there don't have as much talent as the older generation, it's all autotuned now. However, autotune does make some good music.
James Henderson No you’re not apparently you love him because you came all the way here to listen to him sing ❤️how cute .
OriginalMasters he’s just pretending he knows he likes this man . Some white folks don’t like to admit who their idols really are
Derben Leyla I disagree .

Hey kids. Take note. This is real music. Real entertainment. No gimmicks. No nudity. Pure class.
Hard to say nudity wouldn't improve this though.
