I met Nina Simone when she did a benefit concert in San Francisco. I knew the people who had something to do with the production, and I was thrilled to actually see her live. I learned every breath of Mood Indigo when I was 5 years old. During the concert, she called for requests, but no matter how loud I called it, she did not sing Mood Indigo. I went backstage after the concert and all I could say when she turned her attention to me was "I have always loved you." She smiled and thanked me. I had opportunity to attend the after party with my friends, so I asked her why she did not sing Mood Indigo. She responded "Was that you? You don't look old enough to know that song!" I assured her I did...she challenged me to sing it, so I asked if she could still play it. She played and I sang. She said "I bet you couldn't do that again" and she went to her room and came right back...I always thought she only had time to turn on a tape recorder. She played it again and I sang it. She asked me to work with her as personal secretary, so I went to Beverly Hills with her and spent one month. Shortly after that she moved to France. There is much more but I am grateful to finally share this with others who might appreciate.
i've told this story before. for a brief time in the early 70's, i met nina simone. she came and stayed for a few days at an ashram that i was living at. i spent a little time with her. she was polite, and somewhat shy. she told me her secret ingredient for chicken soup. she would add a small tablespoon of peanut butter. it does something magic to the soup, and is worth trying. anyhow, since i spent time with her.. what else do i remember (keeping in mind that i am nobody), we went out for breakfast, she, me and the swami... we read her palm. now that's something, that not many people can say. later that day, i found myself alone with her, in the music room. she began playing a song, and i nearly stopped breathing. i just kept still. i wanted to give her her privacy. i figure that privacy is the only gift of value that a fan can give to a star.

And took pressure off him to not disappoint a fan by his reaction to your wonderful comment. I love how warm of a person you are. I really think you did the right thing.

His only comment was about her rudeness to the girl standing up. I laughed at my error of expecting my friend to like or appreciate an artist like Simone. I'm not saying that people should let people walk over them, but have some thick skin and use some discernment. Every single moment of life you won't be catered to or coddled. It's actually good to learn how to behave with different temperaments and to be able to have emotions unashamedly. With that being said I don't know your friend, so no true passing of judgment.
@@siesies000 I suppose finding Nina Simone during the lowest points of my life, death of my mother, my spouse of almost 23 years requesting a separation, diagnosis of a life altering disease, all in a very short period of time, gave me some comfort and something to keep me from losing my mind. Maybe I was presumptuous thinking my friend would automatically connect in the same way. Something to think about for sure.
I’m sorry about the grief you went through. But it sounds like you were feeding on her music and so you didn’t notice the imperfection. Honestly, I noticed it too, when she was rude to the standing woman. And I was a few minutes into the song before I could put that aside. I’m not young. I’m older than you. And I am in awe of her talent. But if she was really a queen, she wouldn’t have to announce it - nor humiliate the peasants. There were nicer ways to say “please sit down so I’m not distracted.” And “thank you” wouldn’t have hurt either. Basic manners never go out of fashion.
@@meleshenko3767 She didn't appear rude to me! It may be a cultural difference (and I'm certainly not out to start any arguments), but I picked up on her sense of humor in it.

She was! The beginning might have been a real song, but she was totally making it up by the middle-end. Like an old school rapper, but with a gorgeous voice and melodies
Every word up to "but i can't remember" is Janis Ian. Here is the song from Nina's first addition through to to her second - which ends the song. Janis' text is bold in brackets. It is a remarkable fit. *[we all have stories]* But I can't remember it anyway So I'll tell you about the mood that is in the United States today And permeating even Switzerland, is goes But I'll continue it anyway, until I get it together *[Some women have a body men would want to see* *And so they put it on display* *Some people play a fine guitar* *I could listen to them play all day]* But anyway, I'm trying to tell my story Janis Ian told it very well Janis Joplin told it even better Billie Holiday even told it even better We always, we always We always have a story The latest story that I know, is the one that I was supposed to go out with And the latest story that I know, is the one that I was supposed to go out with.

Nobody compares to Nina. So raw and real, an icon of her time. Her genius was her gift and her curse. A life lesson for all who aspire to express themselves and serve their community as a professional artist.
+Charlie Stuyvesant Hey, the same here. A star and a starman gone, both so unique, both my alltime favorites! Nina seems here so fragile, lost and strong at the same time.
+Ana Luiza Brown Yes not got used to David's departure at all - so hard he was so of the time and seemed full of life. Still hope he is grooving with Nina and all the other artist somewhere in good company.
David Bowie was a giant. Few artists were respected and loved in almost any artistic circle as he was. Rock stars, pop stars, punk rockers, jazz legends, classical, painters, fashion designers, intellectuals, young, old, everyone loved and cherish Bowie.
queen off my feelings, i had the honner of meeting this great soul in amsterdam, cafe alto ,thank you god, if i listen to this lady singing, i cry, and be thankfull.
A brilliant performance by Nina Simone. A rewarding performance on so many levels. Captured so many years ago by a focused and very skilled camera man - complemented by good audio recording and a mellow post editing. A joy to watch and listen to, and a deserving tribute to a great African American singer, who deserve to be remembered for coming generations of young people.
Have you heard any of the new album with today's musicians paying tribute? I've only heard Lauren Hill's version of "Feeling Good" but if the rest of the album is anything like that, I NEED to buy it.. LOL
WYH! Why has this wonderful unique piece of music, of real art only 154k instead of 154 millions? Such a wonderful song, audience deserves more than only …
When Nina Simone drops her voice down to softness... when you have to listen close and pay attention to what she's singing... she draws you in... to make you feel the gravity of her words, her story, and the melodious nature of her voice...
I don't have the words to express how wonderful this woman is. WOW. Nina should be required listening for every human on earth. This woman can change the world. I've heard her before but this clip is changing my perception. Makes me think the human race does in fact have hope. Life changing!!!
100% Agree! This is brilliant, but no intention behind that brilliance, just pure heart and pure soul. A one of a kind human being that we all can learn from. I'm so moved by this, so much so to tears, deeply.....

She's so inspiring! I'm not an artist, but listening to her, especially live, just makes me feel like I should go and write poetry. And so what if no one ever reads it, I'd do it just for me. For my soul. And what an honor for Janis to have her name sung in a song by Simone! We need women like this today. So badly.
jitkasuarez That first thing you wrote about listening to her and wanting to write poetry... That was beautiful. I wish someone said the same to me after listening to muy songs!
@@ordinary7413 Oh please. Such tiresome overused hyperbole. She even called herself a queen! Her commanding the person in the audience to "SIT DOWN!!" was something only an entitled celebrity with an inflated ego would do.
She is angry, mad, disillusioned and yet she cannot but be this amazing person once she sings. Insecure, crazy, all that. But she is divine as someone said below. Her voice and her singing emotion is her royalty. This is the strangest song I ever heard ANYONE sing - it is a dirge from the heart.
Hye miss Leen.Personnaly I dont think she was that angry, mad ,insecure or desillusioned'bout what what happened there;than she would have been like that all her carreer i think, cause lots of people act somehow confused when they notice that they're are actually facing an artist wich is not like the others. Also she had,in my opinion, way more than that roalty in her voice and emotion and a dirge in her singing;though you express it well.I think she was even a visioanaire..Like they make'm only once in a hunderd year.Ella & Aretha for example were giants ,but Nina..hard to describe. Not of this earth..i hope you dont mind i supplemented your comment.. : ) By theway, are you Belgian-Flamish perhaps? My father got Belgian roots(my mom is black) and i've been living there.I recognised the Dutch linguistic spell in your name : -) Kind regards Danny Van Baekel
She is so deeply in touch with feelings/emotions etc etc … her genius is her ability & vulnerability expressed in her music - truly one in a billion - we are all the richer to have her music
She doesn't sing, she talks to you and you know she means every word. One of the most genuine performances ever. Just amazing. It's like she has never left. And I thought I knew her well enough. I am going find the whole concert.
I’m a natural fan, too. If it’s done right, it works. She looks nice with short hair. I have short hair again. I like a woman’s neck and face, and so you see more of that. It’s cool.
I saw her in Brasil in the '90s, at the ende of her health. She was magnificent! There were more than 200 thousand people in the open Park. I was so touched that I cried and laughed at the same time! She is my hero!
A masterclass for anyone who want's to learn how to capture an audience and hold them spellbound. It's never too late to find great artists of the past and enjoy their music keeping it alive for the next generation to discover after you . so share and share again keep the great music of the past alive for the future generations to discover .
I have never seen ANY musician bear their soul in the moment like Ms. Nina Simone. It must have been absolutely breathtaking to experience this live. Current and future musicians breathe deeply. This is the emotatian of SOUL.
To the individual leaving the comment "Ms. Simone is very plain...." I can state without fear of contradiction, that those who find this extra-ordinary female 'unattractive' - are unable to address anything...anything above the superficial. She represents the zeitgeist, the history the joy & the pain of a whole people.. combined & focused within the soul of a beautiful woman. What more would a man want?
G Elgar, HI man! precisely, this is TO much for ordinary men..!!! I think she could be attractive for sure, but she carried SUCH a huge pain (despite the very funny behavior she sometimes had like here in the beginning!) and she was SO deep that yes it can be frightening for many men, and not meaning those men are shallow minded, but just ordinary men, whose expectations about women are mostly based on the traditional "sexy and slightly superficial bimbo" who won't force them to self-autocritic and introspection, which most men are unable to.. what you say about her is beautiful and exactly what I've always felt, and it makes her the GIANT she was and will always be, I mean the most overwhelming singer having ever existed.. to me the only one who could compete is Sade..
This is the first time that I’ve heard Nina sing this particular song. I’ve heard Nina sing many songs. She always delivers her music with such feeling and grace. I am 75 years old. As I said, this is the first time I have heard her deliver this song, I say all that to say this, it has touched me, and I have cried, literally. Thank you, Nina Simone.
Once or twice every year this fragment finds me. And I watch it, not only to remind me how insanely good she actually was, but mostly because there is no clip to be found on the entire internet that expresses the loneliness of stardom more accurate. It's so damn ambigue and it both sets me to tears
I was lucky enough to see her about 20yrs ago. She had to be helped onstage to the piano, she was so unsteady. You could hear the audience almost groan with embarrassment as it looked like she wasn't going to able to perform. (This wasn't long before she died at 70)...She literally croaked into the microphone and we all cringed.... Then..... The most amazing sound came out and filled the theater and she launched into "I put a spell on you" She was INCREDIBLE!!!! & had such a rapport with the audience. Definitely one of the top 3 gigs I've ever BEEN to. Awesome talent, extraordinary voice and unlimited charm. So lucky I got to see her.
I heard her albums when I was 21 and she is still my favorite singer. She came to the Boston Jazz Festival when I was 37 and I felt like I'd waited all my life to see her -- at Boston Symphony Hall. I took a friend who'd never heard her. She came out on stage and the standing ovation and cheering lasted a very long time. I felt like I couldn't clap hard enough. It was the greatest thrill of my life. She played for less than an hour, then began to talk about her father and abruptly got up and left. If it had been anyone else, I would have been furious. I had a friend who was supposed to interview her on live radio and she was 40 minutes late. She had a really hard time with life
“Stars” is absolutely my favorite song that Nina Simone sang… and I love it in every iteration/recording/performance I’ve ever heard her perform, because you BELIEVE her when she sings.
When great art is combined with a powerful artist, who has focused her wisdom and storied experiences into a masterclass on a truth-telling, beautiful performance- honest, and simply focused! Incomparable, iconic, and perfectly legendary! Thank you Madame!
I think it was 1965, I saw Nina in concert at Lincoln Center. The love in that huge venue was so thick between audience and performer, she was moved to remark on it almost speechless. I will never forget her!!!
What a beautiful, and talented woman. I would have loved to have met her. Thanks to all the videos, I have in a way. Thank you, everyone for the opportunity to see her!!!!!
My dad and mom took me to see her at the Village Gate when I was a young teenager in the 60's. It changed my life. And then the owner of the Gate, Art D'Lugoff, a friend of my dad's, brought her up to Fire Island where we all summered. Those were the days.
I've known Nina Simone only by her name until now (unless I'm starting to forget things). I ended up here after a David Bowie video. I was so unexpectedly MOVED by this performance. She seems so genuine. She meant every word. Real.

I have friends who love music, and I go to concerts with them. I have friends who I tried to turn onto music and they really don’t get it. They want to leave the show before the encore. I don’t go to shows with those people anymore I love hanging out with them. I love them, but not at concerts.
"..meant for a queen and I'm a queen." I love it!
I LOVED that!! Lmao! 😂❤️
Ikr?
then she laughs and reminds the audience that they clapped even as a joke, when if they thought Disney makes queens then they have never grown up.
Yeah you are, Nina. You're a queen. Forever will be.
I’ve watched this clip many times. Ms Simone fills me with love, sympathy and sadness. Such an awesome, talented and vulnerable woman. I wish…….❣️
Same here friend.
The way she delivers this song, it's like she's talking and it's just coming straight from her...as if the words just came to her. Mesmerizing.
Yes!!!
She's zen mode reached from feelings haha
*[we all have stories]*
But I can't remember it anyway
So I'll tell you about the mood that is in the United States today
And permeating even Switzerland, is goes
But I'll continue it anyway, until I get it together
*[Some women have a body men would want to see*
*And so they put it on display*
*Some people play a fine guitar*
*I could listen to them play all day]*
But anyway, I'm trying to tell my story
Janis Ian told it very well
Janis Joplin told it even better
Billie Holiday even told it even better
We always, we always
We always have a story
The latest story that I know, is the one that I was supposed to go out with
And the latest story that I know, is the one that I was supposed to go out with.
Her stage presence is so powerful!!!! You find yourself hanging on every syllable she utters!!! Such a beautiful woman! Such a treasure!!!!!
Now this is so touching, I love the truth in her music and she's fun to watch
Love her
What do you admire most about her?🙂
I have been to many, many gigs in my time. I have never heard a silent audience like this one. Everyone was listening to every word. Beautiful.
this is, hands down, the most positive thread of comments i've ever read on any youtube video about anything . the positivity in the comments has me weeping with appreciation, after i was already weeping for nina simone
mark Knopfler's got the same amount of positive comments. but I think there's no others..
I know it makes me wanna cry reading the comments

Her music priceless. May she rest easy knowing she left a mark in history.
OK I'm a guy who listen to hard rock heavy metal extreme death and melodic metal lol i do respect all those musicians who i used to listen to, this lady here got my lost feelings and its the very first time I'm listening her tbh i don't even know how it just popped up on my screen and i accidentally clicked onit and was about to close it but then i started listening what she's saying then when she started playing piano and sing.... damn got my goose bumps I loved her
I'm really glad you kept listening :)

Nobody compares to Nina. So raw and real, an icon of her time. Her genius was her gift and her curse. A life lesson for all who aspire to express themselves and serve their community as a professional artist.
Call me sentimental or whatever you want, but this has me in tears. WOW what great tears they are.
+Charlie Stuyvesant Hey, the same here. A star and a starman gone, both so unique, both my alltime favorites! Nina seems here so fragile, lost and strong at the same time.
true strength
agree,,,nice old dutch name ..stuyvesant ..greetings from amsterdam
Charlie Stuyvesant Me too! Touches your heart, doesnt it
I thought I was the only one
Very attentive to her audience. So deep and demands respect. A true artist
It hurts to know that Nina and David are gone... Damn...
+Ana Luiza Brown Yes not got used to David's departure at all - so hard he was so of the time and seemed full of life. Still hope he is grooving with Nina and all the other artist somewhere in good company.
+Ana Luiza Brown it really hurts
Agree so much Daniel he was a gem.
& Janis Joplin
It was Nina who persuaded David Bowie to record Wild Is The Wind...Two truly great artists...
❤
Vero unica ....
David Bowie was a giant. Few artists were respected and loved in almost any artistic circle as he was. Rock stars, pop stars, punk rockers, jazz legends, classical, painters, fashion designers, intellectuals, young, old, everyone loved and cherish Bowie.
Yes I agree!
This video is about Nina Simone.
Where WAS the great Bowie?! He wasn't there supporting Nina, an Honour most people would die for, and she was obviously hurt. This is about Nina, Yes.
@@izzy-xq8ch Do you expect Bowie to be present in every single concert of his friends?

Such a blessing to meet such an Extraordinary Woman.
I could not have said it more succinctly.
I discovered her so late in my life.. missed out on so much (I'm 43)
***** etter late then never.Enjoy it!
Have you heard any of the new album with today's musicians paying tribute? I've only heard Lauren Hill's version of "Feeling Good" but if the rest of the album is anything like that, I NEED to buy it.. LOL
Thanks! I hadn't noticed.
WYH! Why has this wonderful unique piece of music, of real art only 154k instead of 154 millions?
Such a wonderful song, audience deserves more than only …
Now 14 millions
Its preserved for just us i guess
This is more than entertainment. Its art.
When Nina Simone drops her voice down to softness... when you have to listen close and pay attention to what she's singing... she draws you in... to make you feel the gravity of her words, her story, and the melodious nature of her voice...
She unlocks the sadness in our hearts and makes it beautiful
You can feel passion, sadness. You can feel her soul!
yes & that helps you to feel your own soul
she is a wizard of musical genius & helps us all evolve by showing us her beauty & vulnerability…🌹🌻🌹🌻
Nina had the most emotive voice and style of playing. Cuts through straight to the soul
Why am I in tears - I guess the soul knows
Thank you Nina

So badly.

Funny she inspired me to write my one and only poem, she was truly a gift.

She absolutely has the vibe of an actual queen
Она не королева, она богиня.
@@ordinary7413 Oh please. Such tiresome overused hyperbole. She even called herself a queen! Her commanding the person in the audience to "SIT DOWN!!" was something only an entitled celebrity with an inflated ego would do.
THAT'S BECAUSE SHE WAS 🙏😓🥰.
She really does. She has the elegance and sensuality of Cleopatra or Nefertiti. Her voice is legendary. I've always loved Miss Simone. ❤
That is, she really DOES have the vibe of an actual queen. She is so confident
Here 2024 , going thru a record chest of late Uncle , the gems I found . Thank you Nina Simone 🥹🥹
So obsessed with her and her music, She's just gold.

*SHE STAR ABSOLUTEEEEEEE!*
Well said. I don't think she could write a song like this if she was just an ordinary person
By theway, are you Belgian-Flamish perhaps? My father got Belgian roots(my mom is black) and i've been living there.I recognised the Dutch linguistic spell in your name : -)

This was a song originally written by Janis Ian but my god, Nina made it her own! The emotion, the arrangement of the music, everything is exceptional
yes - though check out Janis's original version too - possibly even better...!!
I'm a huge Janis Ian fan
She is so deeply in touch with feelings/emotions etc etc … her genius is her ability & vulnerability expressed in her music - truly one in a billion - we are all the richer to have her music

Unique. We were lucky to have had Nina on this Earth.
And I’m proud to be white. Yay! Go us :)

I wonder what she’d think about all the female pop stars of today....🤔
Beauty very deep inside!
There will never be anyone like Nina Simone!
I saw her in Brasil in the '90s, at the ende of her health. She was magnificent! There were more than 200 thousand people in the open Park. I was so touched that I cried and laughed at the same time! She is my hero!
Amo ela e as músicas dela, e não fazia ideia de que ela já tinha vindo ao Brasil, que bom saber disso.

Indeed. Well spoken
I have never seen ANY musician bear their soul in the moment like Ms. Nina Simone. It must have been absolutely breathtaking to experience this live. Current and future musicians breathe deeply. This is the emotatian of SOUL.
Saw her in Los Angeles before she passed. She was magnificent. She is still here whenever you think of her.
Some say she's not the most attractive woman. I don't understand that, I find her stunning.
It is a stunning woman and very attractive
michael swords me too
not the beautifull one indeed but when she start talking singing no one else exist
who cares... not everyone can be attractive
charming, glamurous and stunning.
To the individual leaving the comment "Ms. Simone is very plain...."
I can state without fear of contradiction, that those who find this extra-ordinary female 'unattractive' - are unable to address anything...anything above the superficial.
She represents the zeitgeist, the history the joy & the pain of a whole people.. combined & focused within the soul of a beautiful woman.
What more would a man want?
I think that her goddess like beauty is so rich & deep it scares shallow minded people... ;)
She is very gorgeous!
@@brockertteambrockert EXACTLY! Her beauty transcends the ordinary common standard. For those who cannot "see" Nina, I feel sadness.

Once or twice every year this fragment finds me. And I watch it, not only to remind me how insanely good she actually was, but mostly because there is no clip to be found on the entire internet that expresses the loneliness of stardom more accurate. It's so damn ambigue and it both sets me to tears
I love her piano playing - and how fitting is this - in any year, in any country - time stands still here. We always have a story.
Nick cave said the same about her
Thank you Lola for sharing your experience and observations. I haven't known anyone who has watched/listened to Nina live.
Thank u
Cool story. Thank you for sharing
She had a really hard time with life
I once heard the story of the drummer who had to manage her volatile mood that day - he joins in at a the right time and keeps it discreet
No more voices like that. Not just vocally. We need you now more than ever. 10:00 min of pure honesty. A simple Thank you would never be enough.
“It is meant for a queen and I am a queen *bows*” SHE IS MY QUEEN
