This to me was the best era for Sinatra. Basie and the boys were so truly talented and the music was swing and jazz with a very 60s hipster tempo and Sinatra, just kept getting better, more alive and his voice was better as he matured.
Basie and his men were an engine in this era - like a finely tuned Formula 1 motor; 18 men hitting a note as one ... Sinatra also knew (and admitted it in several interviews) that the Basie band pushed him like no other outfit could because they were stars in their own right - that if he was mailing it in, Lockjaw Davis would stand up and solo right over his vocal. Give Sinatra his props for being willing to play with a band that was willing to hold him accountable like nobody had done since Tommy Dorsey 20 years earlier.
absolutely true. sinatra lifts us all to the MOON. his shouts of "fly, fly" are exciting and real.He was electric and spread the joy to this audience. and to us.thanks frank, always.
It could never be bettered. Naturally gifted. People who enjoyed making music. Each three brought the best out of each other to collectively belt out these jazzy masterpieces. Love the Skyscraper track!
My first acquaintance with Frank was ‘love and marriage’ from ‘our town’ tv production circa 1957. Then my dad bought ‘only the lonely’ great vinyl record we played on our fisher stereo with tubes, diamond needle and vinyl. The best way to hear the best singer ever. In the early sixties I bought two albums with Basie band then in 1966 Sinatra at the sands live album. Ecstatic.
We don't see this kind of glamour it does not exist anymore.... I love this era... I was a teenager girl and quite impressed with Sinatra's charm.... well I relive the era...!
Great stuff. Lucky enough to see frank twice. First time at scope in 1976 or so and again in 80’s at Atlantic City in concert under stars with tony bennett. The best of all time!
It as tho Frank was simply part of the Basie orchestra. Or, as he was stated, the Basie Organization. Seldom do we see him as relaxed as we do with Basie and company. His artistry as a singer pours forth effortlessly..
They don’t build ‘em like this anymore. This was a match made in heaven-one of the greatest vocalists of all time riding the musical wave generated by one of finest big bands of all time. Thanks so much for posting this. I really wish my dad was around to see this.
Nobody was even close the magic of Sinatra When Bing Crosby first heard Sinatra, Crosby remarked, “A Singer like Sinatra comes along once in a lifetime, but why did it have to be MY Lifetime!!”
Sinatra on a Basie cushion here. Just look at his face during 'Fly me...' when he realises that he has the best band in the business behind him. A match made in Heaven.
Closest thing to actually seeing the greatest live album ever recorded. “Sinatra at the sands” With the count as it was recorded a few months after this ( January February 1966 )
Sonny Payne's drumming is definitive to this music! Sinatra accelerated his affinity for a backbeat swing as a kind of counter to the advent of rock and roll (a rhythm that kinda usurped his place in the 1960s pop pantheon). No matter. Still great. Just check out Sonny's dynamic physicality behind Frank as he plays in the shadows of all these marvelous songs.
And the Count! What a Duo. We have not seen that in our lifetime again. I am so grateful to my father who introduced me to the Count at a very young age.
LET'S DANCE TOGETHER FOREVER, YOU'RE ALL I LONG FOR, MUAAAAH LOVELY MUSIC 🎵🎵🎵🎵🎵🎵🎵 JUST LOVE ME EVERLASTING. AMEN ❤❤❤ GIFTED SINGER. CONGRATULATIONS. ....❤❤❤
Judith Moore There simply no-one who comes close to the charisma, charm, Sinatra is the undisputed king of this style of relaxed, romantic entertainment. Still today is so classy and the best ever to enjoy his unparalleled talent, with the help of amazing bands and orchestras. Still my favourite.
Shortly before Vegas got integrated - courtesy of Sinatra, the Basie Band, and some of Sinatra's best friends (most of whom had a middle name of "The").
That was a lot of entertainment in 15 minutes. There was a slew of songs, patter in between, Frank pulled cup of tea out of the piano and sat down talked about tea for a piece, he introduced Quincy Jones and noted the orchestra for applause... That's an old pro who's been performing for an audience his whole life just about.

Basie’s finest band (one of his finest for sure) and Frank Sinatra-doesn’t get better than this.
Oh thanks for the great audio !! Wow this can be blasted without distortion !!
Sinatra at the top of his game here.
My late dad always said Frank was the best singer he'd ever heard. Hard to argue. Superb timing, precise intonation, just magnificent.
yep.. your dad was right.... it is like listening to sweet honey...
Frank ran the band they followed Frank
Yep my Mom who was no Sinatra fan said " Well he DID have the very best diction..."

That drummer starts cooking at 2:18! fabulous! You'll never see music performed with such perfection, again like this. Master class. Quincy Jones!!
the same at 4:53 is wonderful
The drummer was Sonny Payne. Check out the Basie Band playing "Ole Man River" on YT to get an education on how hard Payne could swing the band.
Those musicians are just unbelievably talented! Basie, Sinatra & Q! We will never experience anything like this again! MZW
Unfortunately you are correct. Sadly we just don't see this anymore.

I once read that Sinatra felt that he had to bring Quincy Jones on board because Count Basie was getting on and needed to be updated and re-charged
The Count didn't lose a thing especially his swing, at the time Quince came on board the Count had previous commitments.
