Quite a few people pointed out that House music has never lost touch with the black community and that black artists have continued to carry the genre up to this day. That is absolutely true and that point is emphasized in the video.
However, it's fairly clear that the genre has been whitewashed (to some extent) and that the mainstream artists who profit the most from the performance of House music on a global scale happen to be white men. The process of white-washing of the genre is very well-dcoumented. Black listeners of House music obviously do not need to be reminded that it was a genre created by black queer people, but:
    1) there are black people who typically do not listen to that music genre and do not know about its history, mostly as a result of that whitewashing.
    2) there are plenty of non-black people who enjoy House music and have absolutely no idea that it was created by black artists since most of the House DJs they listen to happen to be white.
That is why it's relevant that mainstream black artists turn towards this genre so that the public at large also discovers that history.

I agree with your take. It’s not just an association with whiteness that’s holding black America back from identifying with house music, it’s also homophobia. Andre 3000 said in an interview “in the hood they think [if you listen to house] you’re gay or white”. Growing up in the U.K. if you were listening to house records at school you wouldn’t be labelled different or ‘gay’ because house music is universal there.
Right now there are Latin House records popping off Spotify, there’s house tracks popping off in the Kpop scene. House was everywhere when I visited South Africa.
Techno House, Bass House, Big Room House, Deep House, Future House…Im not convinced that the invention of all the various sub-genres of house is tantamount to ‘whitewashing’ *as long as* they took those bones and made sth new for themselves. There are so many sub-genres and new genres forming out of House that can be linked to many corners across the globe, and that’s what so fantastic about it. The roots are in 1980s Chicago, yes but it’s evolved over the years into a much more pluralistic ‘big-tent’ genre, and imho it is its pluralism that has ended up becoming the genre’s best asset!
All in all. Another Great video essay. Can’t wait for your next! 👏

Just a note: Get It Together off of More Life is sampled from a South African House song by the principle producer of it, Black Coffee. The sound is indeed rather removed fro. The sounds of Chicago and Detroit from which its roots can be traced but is not only worth consider when thinking of the first time Drake dabbled in the genre but also a possible reason one mat assume he would work so closely with Coffee on Honestly, Nevermind.
Also, in South Africa House Music is a very black music genre, its roots amd our very many genres that came from it (Gqom, Amapiano, Shangaan Electro, Yaart Musiek etc).

Black artists’ impact on electronic music is undeniable and formative across all sub-cultures of the genre. When it comes to House Music, let’s be very clear that it was black QUEER artists who spear headed the way. The term “house” is short for “The Warehouse”, an underground club for black/brown LGBTQ+ people in the south side of Chicago. The electronic music that was played in that club had a particular sound, 4-on-the-floor, disco influence, and a feeling of liberation. To describe the style of electronic music played at The Warehouse, they decided to shorten the name to “House music”. S/o to all black and brown QUEER artists for this resurgence! Your impact is responsible for this wave!

I will be satisfied when current mainstream artists like Beyonce and Drake actually work with longtime, bonafide contributors to the House scene. These pioneering artists, deejays, and producers laid the foundation and have consistently contributed to the culture since its creation. Artists like Ultra Nate', Inaya Day, Crystal Waters, Barbara Tucker, Cece Peniston, Robin S., and many others are active faces of longevity within this important genre. Not to mention, dope producers like David Morales, Josh Milan, Louie Vega, DJ Spen, Quentin Harris, and several others currently keeping the scene alive and vibrant. I feel that until they tap into these resources of the true sound of House, they are merely sampling and scratching the surface. I am standing by, optimistically, that they will dive in and truly deliver something that is memorable. We shall see.

THIS!! I have to say, when I heard the Azealia Banks track, "Anna Wintour" for the first time, I was really impressed at how authentic the music sounded. It was totally HOUSE. @b.b-notebrown 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@electrikblue1008 You bring up an excellent point! Azealia has been about the scene from the start. I think that is what helped her stand out. House Heads immediately recognize the genuine and gravitate toward it. So, that is an excellent point. I will also add, that helps an artist garner respectability as well. When Mariah Carey tapped into the mastery of David Morales, the bar was raised for her. I would like more artists to get back to doing that. Sure, there are new, hot producers out there, but you can't ignore/neglect the maestros.

House music has always been alive and well. First off I completely disagree with the statement that Drake and Beyonce are reminding people of house music's black roots. There are so many black Dj's out there that you can easily find on Traxsource and they'll never get any recognition because they are not mainstream. 90s and today are full of black and white artists in House music but they'll never get recognition because they are not rapping. 1 house song that Drake comes out with does not make him a house music artist. Drake represents all the people out there who all say " House music is wack " but now we gotta praise him for it and Beyonce just cause they came out with one house song. Absolutely nobody who actually listens to house music for real is gonna actually take their time to listen to Drake's house song because its a mockery. Drake is doing the same thing Lil Wayne did 13 years ago. Make a rock album to get Gothic people to listen to his music. Drake is basically trying to get house music people to listen to him. Like Duh. As for Beyonce yo seriously she's overrated man. So many female black artists out there but they gotta always treat her like she's some sort of Goddess. Fuck all that shit. Let's face it! Weticos have created or invented very little of anything which came solely from themselves unless it had to do with destruction and death! That is not an exaggeration but a historical fact that has been proven through occurrences! We are the real creators endowed with the spirit of our Heavenly Father, The Great and Only I Am That I AM! But we have been sidetracked through the treachery of those who realize our worth more than we do, much to our shame! We hold onto nothing because we value nothing and the proof of this is in that we expose whatever that we do have, which they covet and steal, to a brutal, ruthless enemy which we act as if they are truly our friends when we know better because they have shown us, to our faces and have stabbed us in our backs, without hesitation every chance they have received from us, the opportunity to do so! We ourselves are at fault for our continual downward spiral because we refuse to accept what we already know to be true, that we have allowed a demonic presence which has spread havoc and death everywhere they have ventured without remorse or accountability for their actions! We treat them as if in order for us to be considered worthy of anything, we have to have their approval, rather than keeping them as far away from our precious things as they do us from theirs which are already ours! Until we learn to recognize the devil for who he truly is and stop pretending he and his seed are angels of light, we will forever be corrupted, compromised and brought low, by our own stupidity for not!

NGL, I’m low-key disappointed with this ‘reclamation’ narrative I keep seeing. There have been plenty of black artists doing (and thriving) within the House scene - itself being a huge umbrella term comprising of many sub-genres due to international contributions. Beyoncé and Drake release a house record: all of a sudden, nobody else matters. House is now ‘reclaimed’ because ‘they did it’ … f**k everyone else. 🙄 I get it... It’s Beyoncé and Drake. They have the name recognition and most visibility. But the reclamation narrative born out of it, almost wreaks of a certain (North) American mainstream exceptionalist bias, long after House music went global and reached new heights aided by contributions from many blacks on the outside. It’s a little annoying hearing hot takes that bc of industry insiders like Bey and Drake, black ppl are now ‘reclaiming’ this music, when the charts across Europe and Africa have already been full of black artists singing/rapping over house beats for many years in multiple languages and having commercial success. Is black American Twitter even aware of this? 🫥
Ultimately, both bey and Drake’s efforts ended up amounting to pretty middling and mediocre House tracks. The both of them can do (and have done) much better dance music than this.
Edit: when I said disappointed I don’t mean the creator, he’s great! I meant all the takes being seeing online since Bey and Drake dropped house tracks. Another great video 👏
