This is exactly what I was looking for, I’m not a professional and it’s for me on my motorcycle and I can’t buy expensive sprayer booth filters and all that pro stuff, by the way your tank came out beautiful thanks for the video
Young man you did a great job for what you have as a shop. You keep it up and sooner or later you will have that so up and running. "Do what you love and the money will eventually come". Indian Larry.
Thanks, great video. I recommend everyone to try painting - it`s fun and you will never stop painting. But be aware that you have to try a few times before you get hobby skills. I have spray painted a hole bike with prime, 2-component white and 2-component clearcote - all in spraycans. Worked great but you must sand it and polish it to get that gloss finish. Hey Clas, Im going to undertake a motorcycle project on my older Ducati within the next couple of weeks with rattle cans, (Ive never painted before). Im going to go with some Rustoleum Custom - Matte Pearl white followed by some SprayMax 2K clear. Question, what differences in application will I encounter between the fiberglass body parts, and the metal gas tank? Thks!
Looks great. I haven’t tried the jb weld trick. I always tape off my filler, tape off where the cap sits. That way your clear will seal up on the neck and fuel can’t get under it.
just a side note, that gas tank is from a 1980 Yamaha XS 1100 special sg .so crazy i am about to paint the exact same tank using your video instructions,i hope it turns out as nice. thanks for the whats up on this.
The owner of the tank and side panels may’ve already told you, but I believe that those parts are from an Yamaha XS400, as I have a XS400S with the same tank. Helpful vid!
Hadn't even considered paint transition...great need to know info...always willing to learn something new & being that im just starting out & am highly motivated to excel in the field little tid- bits of info like that are golden! ..so ty...great video👍
@@John-td5lu Turned out great. I've painted like 12 bikes since then, if you go to my channel and look at "posts" you can see a little KE 100 that I just finished last week. I've built a full paint booth now and have several paint guns and airbrushes as well. I got bit by the painting bug!
Really nice video, thanks man. I learned something new with the jb. If I had one recommendation, the music was double your voice in volume, made it uncomfortable. But minor details, nice work!
Great job! What exact color is that? I had mine done a few years back and never knew a paint booth isnt really needed. The main reason why my bike was placed on hold for two years was cause the joint was in the middle of getting their paint booth replaced.
90% of the time you can get away with one quart. Some colors like yellow take more coats but most of the time one quart is sufficient if you do not have to redo anything.
Can you use a «wet and dry» sandpaper without water, As you would with a «normal» sandpaper, Just with a higher grit? Example: instead of using a 400 normal dry sandpaper, can you use a 800 wet and dry paper without water?
hey man will you give me a quick run down of the steps I should take to re paint my tank in fenders? They are in perfect condition the paint is nice no scratches or dents. I just to change the color. So would I scuff up the paint with 400 wet/dry then spray primer coats, then spray new paint then clear then polish? And could you tell what grits to sand with for each step? Thanks man!
Is there a no chips or exposed metal you can just take and scuff everything with a 400 grit and as long as you do not sand all the way through the paint you don't even have to primer Just wipe down with tack rag paint and clear and then follow the same sequence to wet sand to be safe I would start with 800 grit then then 1500 done 3,000 then Buff it
Do you let wait anytime between the primer/primers and the top coat and clear coat? I’ve heard that you should let primer sit to “shrink” but also heard to paint after primer within 12 hours
I'm starting with a brand new tank, after cleaning it, I have an etching primer. Can I lay multiple coats of it down, and then color, or do I need to lay 1 coat of etching, then a few coats of another primer?
Should be able to paint right over top of the etching primer. Unless you have body work to do then you might have to use a high build. But if the tank is new should be no body work
why do you use the 2k primer after the self etching primer? just to fill potential pen holes or another reason? could the paint go directly onto the spray bottle etching primer?
Exactly to fill pinholes it's basically a thin layer of spray on Bondo and gives you something to sand smooth. You can absolutely paint directly over the selfish
Can you bondo over paint? I have a tank I lined with Caswell and it's really dinged up. Big dents, little ones, some rust etc. Obviously I would block it out, but just curious.
As long as the surface has been prepped or scratched up with at least 80 grit and any oils have been removed. You can put Bondo over the paint. But is not a great solution for large dents. Rule of thumb with Bondo is snow thicker than 1/8 in. If your dents are deeper than 1/8 of an inch I recommend trying to beat them out or use bondo hair or fiber which is Bondo reinforced with fiberglass Make sure the dent is scored or scratched up extremely well so that the Bondo hair will have something to grip on to. Hope this was helpful
Wonderful job. How do you avoid tiny dust spots on the surface while the paint is still fresh? I paint in my garage and can't get rid of dust in the air.
Only if you wait longer than the manufactures full cure time in between coats which in most cases is 36 hours. But I usually only wait about 10 minutes between coats
I don't even own a motorcycle but I stayed to watch this entire thing. What a great video!
Thanks
The JB weld at the transition point is a great idea! My bike's paint bubbled after I painted it cause gas got underneath. I'm gonna try that.

I like the way you make it a no nonsense approach. Well done.
great video mate but throwing in the blaring music is dam painful. twice as loud as when you are speaking
Exactly.

Thank you so much for this video. Excellent step-by -step explanation. Like a free painting seminar! 5/5 stars.

Do you have links to what you used? Did you buy them at biltema? And would it work on yamaha plastic panels?

Thanks I have to paint a tank set and this was a incredible help. Most videos only talk about custom paint. I’m subbed
Nice work brother looks amazing
PHARRAWAY thanks
Love the jb weld idea. I’d have so many tank peal right there at the filler neck
Great job i like the finish product

great video man, convinced me to get at least a basic paint gun from harbor and some real paint from summit. gonna give it a shot with my fenders
Do I need some specific compressor for airgun? Or maybe just reductor is must have with airgun
Great vid so thanks for the tips, esp the JB Weld idea!
Nice video brother keep up the good work
Great job. Thinking about giving my Kawa Nomad a sprucing up!
Great DIY paint video, Thanks!! I'll definitely be using this, keep up the great work.
Thanks thats great i always wondered how to prep the filler neck so it doesn't peel .
Great video , I might attempt a paint job thanks to you. From Minneapolis
Outstanding video Sir. Please keep them coming 👍👍
3” wireless /battery Polisher is best for small stuff like this. Perfect for it .
I will have to look into one thanks.👍
That is a awesome job sir, great work for the DIY novel's
Man what a great job and thanks for the video
looks professional to me 🙂
Very good tip to seal around gas cap. That has happen to me
Love it, I like it because you explained things out.
I appreciate that!
Great video, just wanted to add - I was able to get a very nice finish just by hand polishing.
Great video and end product
Nice looking paint job man. Do you know how well that paint stands up to gas?

Great job, man. Thanks for the video!
The JB weld tip is great.
Can't take credit for it some old guy showed me
Good job very hardworking!
how long do i have to wait before buffing it?
Also, can we use urethane on plastic motorcycle fairings?
I would wait 36 to 48 hours before wet sanding and buffing. Yes you can use urethane paint on plastics but you want to use a flexible plastic primer
@@amcustomfab ty so much for answering 😀

Very nice job & vid. Showed me some better moves and techniques . Thanks for for sharing, i appreciate the professionalism attitude . Cheers!

Would you use a clear coat and wait on motorcycle fairings as well?
Looks good! My paint guns are Cheap. I used a touch up gun for painting Aircraft parts. Great for motorcycles.
Good job man ❤💪 what the gun are you used for a base color?
Great job

It was called carbon fiber metallic
What type of paint is this when i use spray paint its can remove with petrol i am from pakistan can i find this type of paint

How much paint does it take to do a motorcycle? Fenders, tank, cowling and misc small parts. No frame painting

Grind down to metal, feather with 80, 180 , then fiberglass kitty hair if big dent, then spread bondo , prime, sand , paint, clear , sand buff
