    I appreciate the video. Getting ready to paint a couple of motorcycles that are done except for paint. This was helpful.

    Nice video. I do a bit of the same in my shop. I have the same tank and made a table top stand for it by screwing together two 2x6s in a T shape. The tank sits on it like a bike frame. I paper the stand off and pop the tank on to prep and paint.

    Good information and video. I find it helpful to mount the tank on a bicycle repair stand. The tank can then rotate in the x and y axis without touching the tank, just touching the stand. This allows the top to be painted easier and gives better access to all surfaces. The bottom edge of the tank hangs in the air allowing a cleaner application. Less likely to drop, bump or touch the tank with greasy hands while working on it.

    Hey man, you do real nice work. I have a DR650 that I've been considering painting. I have never done any 'real' painting before, but I have a ton of experience in polishing. I think you've given me the confidence to give it a go! Thanks for the info.

    Real nice job, how about putting a decal on should I put down the base coat than the decal and the clear coat over everything last ?

    • @amcustomfab
      @amcustomfab  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Definitely increases the life of the decal. If you clear over it I would probably clear coat then decal then another layer of clear over top just in case you make a mistake with the decal. You have that barrier of clear to be able to clean it off and not mess up your base coat. Thanks for watching 😎

    I have a quick question. I recently painted my fuel tank similar to yours and think it turned out well. However, there were two spots I missed with the spotting putty and now they're visible in the final job. I even used spraymax 2k clearcoat on it. I was wondering if it would be possible to sand down to the primer/paint in these areas and then patch them, paint again then clear coat. Not sure if it'd be better to just accept it wont be perfect cause I could see it doing more damage. If you think I should try to fix, what sandpaper should I use and which layer would be good to sand to (primer/paint)? I think in your other video you said you could paint over the spot filler but not sure if it'll just show more after.

    • @amcustomfab
      @amcustomfab  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you sand down to the primer you would probably have to paint the entire tank again. One thing you could try. Is scuff up the clear coat where your dents are lightly. And then mix another small batch of clear coat and brush a little puddle of clear coat into the dent let it dry completely. Lightly block it out with probably some six or eight hundred grit to blend the transition making sure you don't go through your other clear coat and then do one last clear coat over top of the whole tank again that is what first comes to mind so you are almost using the clear coat as filler but anytime you go to do a repair it's risky.

    Hey there, great tutorial ! Your
    buffing machine, I’m guessing it’s not like a regular angle grinder ?

    • @willstikken5619
      @willstikken5619 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They may look similar but they are different animals. The grinder is a bit more heavy duty with different attachment styles. You'll see people rigging them to adapt form one job to another but you really shouldn't both. Like his time lapse rig grinders tend to collect things you don't want on your paint.

    How much would it cost me to take it to the shop and have it fixed and painted my Kawasaki 2007 gas tank ? If I was to do it myself I do have the basic tools first time doing anything like this and am a new motorcycle 🏍 rider just happen to drop my motorcycle

    Is there any reason who you didn’t choose to. Hang the tank up vertically so you could paint both sides at once? Great video given some confident to do this myself

    • @amcustomfab
      @amcustomfab  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can absolutely hang it and shoot it all at once. I have just found that it is much easier to paint horizontal surfaces and more forgiving so if the tank is facing upright even if you get a run you can add more paint until the run slides all the way off the bottom edge and then you only have to sand the very bottom edge of the tank to remove the run.

    You're not showing me how to apply primer, base coats, secondary coats, clear coats, why they're necessary, etc. Most quality paint kits come with those and require those.
