I’ve been polishing metal for years now and your video is very informative and bang on for us DIYers.
I understand polished aluminium tarnishes and needs protection but polished steel can be cleaned after the buffing process with WD40. That stuff is a great cleaner and brings out a shine like you wouldn’t believe. I’ve also found polished steel never rusts as there are no nooks and crannies for moisture to settle in.
I’ve polished all my steel tools in the workshop over the years and never had a rust problem like I did every year after cold damp winters. Thanks for your video.🇦🇺👍
Hey, I’m thinking about going all out on my hot boy civic build. Was gonna chrome polish the entire engine bay. Every single part as well as the bay itself. You think I should just polish and clean as you outlined or would a clear coat be a good idea in this use case? Thanks
Do you use WD40 to protect the steel after polishing? Would a metal polish be better?
Excellent presentation! I'm 67 and I have tried it all out there but you made it look so much easier with your method. I have ordered a bunch of your products, I'm in the middle of a 76 Yamaha RD400 high performance build. I do my own boring and I have a SuperFlow machine for port work, but that's easy compared to polishing parts. Thanks for sharing, much appreciated!
I appreciate the kind words Richard, happy to hear you found the video helpful! Your support of Pryme is greatly valued as well!
Love watching a young man with talent and drive, I’m 52 years old and you inspired me to restore a bike and ride again this summer,, did it for years when I was younger,, keep up the good work ....
Well that was very inspirational to read!
Thank you for giving Cameron the credit and posting it for me to feel better!
Hey, nice video! FYI: A white pad is extra-fine, approximately equivalent to 600-grit sandpaper; gray compares to 220-grit; maroon, 150-grit; and green, 100-grit. The difference among them relates to the coarseness of grit that's impregnated in the plastic strands, not the thickness of those strands.
Yeah he got those grit comparisons really wrong. 120 is rough as hell
This channel has been so educational!
I was basically given two vintage bikes. They are both very beat up and rusted out. Hopefully I can restore them with some of the techniques learned here!
after polishing aluminum, you can protect it with 'Nufinish' the once a year car polish, it gives polished aluminum a liquid metal appearance which prevents oxidation so the finish will last a long time, I haven't tried it on other metals but I have used it on aluminum and it really does work!
Thanks dude im gonna try that
Man, Really! I'll try that!
I've used nufinish on oxidized paint for 30 years and didn't know that about metals! Thanks!
I wish I had discovered this channel earlier. I really want to get into rebuilding bikes and I've learnt so much from this channel. Thank you!
Truly best channel for learning and fun
Cam! You should do a bike and make it a “CHROME” build do this to all the metal pieces it’s not my style but if the whole bike was done like that it would be super unique and would definitely draw a crowd.
With clear plastics
And yz125/250
Bronson Launder everything chrome handle bars triple clamps swing arm levers pegs. Man just thinking about it done like that I would need to be placed in an art museum!
That would be neat
Soo 2003 I like it 😂😂
Just throwing this out there: sometimes using machines is not always a good idea. Generally I would wash the part. Then I would file down the casting marks. For the flat areas, I glue sand paper to small wooden blocks. I would start with 600 (wet, water and dish soap) and see if it removes the deepest scratches. I then work my way to 2000 grit and then finally the buffer. Something to keep in mind is, all aluminum oxidizes and it happens way faster than you might think. For example, you could be sanding on a part and come back to it in 3 hours, and you’ll have to resand back through the oxidation. You can tell when you get through, the sandpaper will feel like it’s dragging (cutting) more. And when you get your final finish, don’t put anything on it other than wax. If you spray clear coat, the aluminum will oxidate and the clear turns an ugly kind of yellow.
You can buy clearcoat with UV protection
Ceramic coating 😊
Polishing metal is more addictive than hash. Only real men and legends will understand this.
@Vox Deus p

Unfortunately not true.... Tweekers also get addicted to polishing..seen one polish his stolen car for 3 days straight using tansmission fluid... Portland Oregon what can I say
Get the AAAA full melt next time
And isn't it ironic.. no matter how clean we get it and how mirror finish.. a REAL man will always say..
'I stil need to polish it some more'
😂😂💯
OK, I found the link. Please forgive my stupidity and disregard everything I said EXCEPT how great these videos are. They are OUTSTANDING. Thanks, John
For the clear coat, or really cleaning any metal you can also soak it in acetone. Simple Green works for cleaning in most cases; but for high carbon build or paint, toss it in a appropriate sized container and let the acetone do most of the work for you... of course if you have the means to own a wet blaster, just use that; but if you do sand blasting it's critical to clean the part as much as possible before blasting it. Otherwise you contaminate the blast media... great video.
This is the best video I’ve seen on polishing. Great sequence & tips!
WOW this is precisely what I was looking for. NOBODY on TH-cam explains how to get that "brushed" look with aluminum. My Harley Sportster has brushed aluminum parts all over it. NOW I finally know how to clean them. Cuz they're gettin crusty, and nothing really restores them properly. THANKS for this!
Cameron, Well done buddy, I've been polishing self taught for the best part of twenty years and getting reasonable results, after watching your video it's answered all the questions I've been wandering about but not had the answers to, now I know and also picked up another supplier for finishing products, so big thank's for that. Also the video on plating, again, I have one of those kit's but not set it up yet as been too busy being ill, pleased to say I'm loads better and will get cracking with the plating now youv'e answered all the yestions. I have a Honda XL 500, XL 600 and also an old Peugeot ex French Army bike to do, so should get plenty of use.
Cameron to ask, have you tried to plate any large item's, one of the reasons I bought the Caswell kit is because I have a massive collection of vintage two gallon petrol cans which are 12 x 10 x 6 inch's I have a custic tank to strip them and also a Soda blaster to finish them off, I would really like see how one look's like plated, I was going to chrome powder coat one but you can't get them to hot as all the joint's are soldered and experience has proved that they can fall apart. I have 1,000 of these can's along with other vintage item's and of course the bike's.
Great video. Been doing this since the early 70's with metric bikes. Your presentation is to the point, thanks for sharing your experience.
Just got my set of pads. A godsend, incredible. It will take a little practice on when and how much to use the flap vs aggressive scratch pad but just the easiest aluminum polishing I've ever tried. I so wish inked these pads years ago when I made a 2x5 ft wrinkled copper waterfall fountain.
Always amazing how you can make something old look better than new, keep showing us how to make things better bro!🙏🏻
Just bought a bench buffer and I’m ordering pads ASAP. Thanks!!
Major props brother! I learned more from this than any other 5 tutorials and I don't own a dirt bike anymore. Been searching for an old Honda xr 100 4 stroke to restore. Definitely a sub worthy channel
You inspired me to rebuild my motorbike. I learned a lot from you, thanks.
Now I really feel that I can get the result I want.
From the first to the last screw , I rebuild everything on it.
Which I would love to see you build a wiring harness because it requires a lot of preparation. I'm in this process right now.
I wish you health :)
Looks super. I found that if you are restoring anodized items, drain cleaner works to remove the old finish well
This video answered all of my questions on cleaning and restoring metal parts. Amazing video.
Great to hear! Thanks for watching
I'm refurbing some antique tools, but I don't have bench grinders. I invested in an electric Makita 1/4" chuck straight-mini die grinder. After seeing your air grinder with those mini flapper sanding/scotch-brite wheels, I need to get some. Great work!
“Briliant ! Literally. Best polishing video I’ve seen.
after buying a bike that was neglected and watching hundreds of videos on restoring, fixing , cleaning. this is by far the best out there! thank you for this content. will be watching more in the future!
First time watching, I found your video very informative. Good clear descriptions of each step as well as each product used.
And that finish looks really great!
So thanks for sharing. 😎😉
Again, Cameron.... what another great job. And never let anyone tell you that you don't have patience! I was just bragging about your powder coated springs. Those turned out cool too.
One word, Satisfying!
Think I'm going to buy some wheels for my Baldor, put on some tunes, and go polish some boat parts.
Thanks for putting this together, great video
Way more cleaning than what I need for old toolboxes, but very informative. Thanks!
You're like an infomercial.....But wait, there's more!
Killing it with these tips and results! Thank you Cam!
Definitely gotta take my yz250f and clean all the parts like you did! That will make a huge difference. Holy. Especially since it has over 200 hours in total it has got a lot of stratches and marks all over it. Gotta repaint the engine covers and clean all the parts like you did!
Wear a respirator when using anything thats remotely scotch brite like
I agree, lots of micro particles are coming off them especially when on a grinder.
Did you get a chance to compare the SIMPLE GREEN PRO M METAL CLEANER AND POLISH liquid against the SIMPLE GREEN PRO HD HEAVY DUTY CLEANER ?
recently broke my collarbone in a dirtbike crash, been cleaning every nook and cranny in the bike i could, now tearing the hole thing down (with one arm) and trying to polish up the bike so it’s gonna look mint, any other ideas for how to make the bike look absolutely mint? love your vids man keep it up
HOLY CRAP DUDE!! This turned out mint. Definitely the best polishing video I have seen. Props to you. I love your work
Thanks for checking it out! Glad you enjoyed it!
I love your work man. You always do an awsome job at everything you work on and i think your videos are crystal clear for step by step instructions. Top work brother👍
Hey Cam, if you're really interested in having a vapor blasting machine, I could give you some infos on a DIY setup that works just as good as an industrial machine. It's actually really entertaining to build!
If you have something with lower speed a soft bristled wire brush with light oil or WD-40 will polish aluminum nicely.
I know it sounds like it will scratch but for me it never has as long as oil was present.
Works good with a drill and small cup brush.
Great demo. I just ordered the 8” cleaning pads and cannot wait to try them out. Thanks for showing how they work.
Cam, this is the best metal polishing video I have found by a lot! Thank you so much for sharing it.
Great little how-to. Once done could you ceramic coat the aluminum to help prevent corrosion?
I've been polishing a Mustang Bullitt intake manifold. I've got a great finish on a lot of the flat surfaces, but I'm struggling to get the detailed areas. The Dremel attachments available at the store and on their website are super pricey and you end up buying combo packs that leave you with too many of one type you're not going to end up using. Thanks for sharing the attachments and bits you used.
Metal isn't polished until you can use it as a mirror. Haha
I been waiting on these kinda videos these are my favorite how to do stuff i learn a lot off them to
😋😋😜😜☝️☝️☝️🤗🤗🤗
Seth Clarke yes it can. However in order to keep it from Eventually metal pumpkins. You’ll need to clear coat it for long turn shine
Feel free to check out our polishing page on Facebook at Tri State Wheel Polishing.
God Bless!
R.I.P miss you brother you are a legend.
I could watch this all day long
You're a legend dude.. if I lived in the US I'd buy your stuff just to support you
Have you covered when and why one would use the low or high speed options on the Baldor machine? I have ordered your pads three times and am finding that my results are good. I have a 1hp two speed machine from Eastwood.
Love your educational videos.
Also the method of clear coating freshly buffed steel or aluminum motorcycle parts would be great. I use the 2k Clear Glamour rattle can product.
Cameron, you are an excellent instructor👍🇬🇧
Thanks for keeping these up for us 'late to the party' guys! Just found your channel and subscribed, too! You do good work as a teacher!
Recently I started another motorbike restoration, it's going to be a full nut and bolt job so I bit the bullet and got myself a decent 1.5 HP polisher, it cost a fair few quid but what a difference to the clapped out old polisher ive been using for the last 20+ years. I am really impressed with the various abrasive discs & flap wheels in this video, never seen those before & I already know I want them now I have this new machine !
I just clicked the link and saved the website ready to do a shopping list later, the only downside is the shipping, import duty & handling fees at my end so looks like I'm going to have to dig a bit deeper.
Great video you did here btw very well explained.
Your videos is great! I'm addicted to your channel. Would be real interesting to see you fix up parts without all your professional tools and equipment. Maybe even without taking the bike apart but still end up with a extra ordinary result. I'm sure you can!
For protecting the part have you tried gloss clear coat enamel paint? Stuff is stupid hard so I imagine it wouldn't chip easily, could probably buff the paint with some auto paint buff to get rid of haze. Thanks for the great vid!
Triple tree looks like chrome. That’s my kind of look 👍 70’s chopper style
Great job mate. Excellent information without the stupid humour. Fabo. Thanks from Tasmania.
Mate, that was a super cool video. Thanks for taking the time to make this.
Crazy. Wish I had patience like this.
Great to see videos from you again! Hope all is well Cameron, have a super day!
That was awesome. Thank you for putting this together!!
Nice! Been watching your engine cleaning videos and now this one. Rebuilding a 1978 KZ650 into a scrambler/cafe mash up. This will help for sure.
Cameron, this is a GREAT video. I´ve always liked my vehicles parts to shine. But...it would have been a huge impact to see a photo of the part installed before, and one AFTER. i´d love to have seen that.
Man, gotta say, you do such a good job explaining steps and video work. Primo job man.
Simple green always amazing
Thank you for sharing your knowledge and the tips and options about the polishing and buying of the tools greatly appreciated!
I used The FLAP wheel you recommended, and it scratched the hell out of my aluminum piece, came out looking like sht. Nice going dude!
Nice video! Could you keep it shiny by applying wax periodically?
Now I know what I need to get for my old school Rockford Fosgate amplifier heat sinks after the powder coat has been stripped off.
Is there a product that I could put it over the outside like a clear coat to protect it? Would ceramic coating be strong enough?
Bro thank you so much for taking the time to do these videos! I watched your cerakote video just before which is another product that I want to be able to use. Well and you showed me how to do that too!
Appreciate it bro 👊💪👍!!!!
Do you have any tips to cleaning the dirt stained plastic parts? Like the OEM shark fin or disc cover on the front.
Soak it with Simple Green and if all else fails, dye it
Fyi, if you remove the edge from the triple clamp around the fork tube area it will give the front end of your motorcycle more flex. Can be a good thing &/or bad thing depending on each bikes original handling caristics & of course your personal preference.
Great video👍
✊💯💨
Been watching polishing videos for months and never saw this one. So glad I did. Saving me hours of hand sanding
Hi Cameron, Too clean for me personally, but Always enjoy your enthusiasm. Atb from UK
Awesome video Cameron! Thank you soo much for putting this one out, I know myself will be referencing this throughout the winter/spring to get my CR125 lookin like a mirror!
So very satisfying. It's like therapy
wow.... great video on polishing. getting ready to dive into a motorcycle project.
Makes me miss my shop where I did polishing work.
Well done! I was familiar with most of the processes, but you were very through and filled in the details for me. Thanks!
Is there anything that Ron Howard can't do? 😁 Awesome work! 👍 Subscribed. 🔔
Awesome video, I have found this to be very helpful. Thank you for your polishing techniques and I will be purchasing your products to add to my toolkit. Keep up the excellent work
Very nice. I have several aluminum bike parts to polish up. Thanks for the tips.
Hey man, that's better than new. I don't surprise. You are a pro.
I would be happy doing this all day long. Thanks for this video!
Shoot that candy red over polished aluminum and watch how good it turns out vs chrome powder. Also, a DA sander will take down those casting (parting) lines in your cast parts much faster and still keep the round profile on your parts.
a chrome swing arm would be hilarious
I have learned so much from this video!!
Thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks Cameron, another good tutorial. Now I can really crack on with my restoration. (just the job for our lockdown over here).
learned so much from your channel, thank you
The Napa alimuibrite I believe it’s called works well like the mag well cleaner. Def grab some
Please be aware-
This part, as with most "parts" is not plain aluminum. If it were, it would
crack or bend during it's service (a motorcycle yoke?).
The old slang for chrome wheels was "mags", because things are a
mixture of the homogenous metals Aluminum and Magnesium.
One is soft and malleable, the other- hard & brittle. Together, the amalgam
is wonderful for it's light weight, strength, and ability to be polished to a mirror.
Everyone still just calls it "aluminum" though.🤷🏻♂
Removing the casting joints makes a big difference in appearance especially if you are polishing it to a chrome like finish...imho
You're Great. I really like what you do. Well done Dude. 😉💪👋
Keep making videos like this.
You're very inspiring.
great video if you go to 3M all their scotchbrite pads and wheels are colour coded for the abrasive sizes example brown is coarse red is finer followed by blue and then white i have flap wheels from 3M which are red yellow green and brown cant remember what abrasive sizes they are though, i europe they may well have their own colour codes, great video nice polishing job part looks great.
Hi Cameron. I purchased a bunch of your 6” pads after watching this video. I also got the little polished and stand that you have.
I am ready to polish the dial indicator wheels for the compound slide on my Southbend lathe. They are fairly shiny now, but have a few dings in them. I do NOT want to polish out the scribe marks or numbers in them.
What would you recommend?
Thanks,
Paul
Ok, who else saw Ron Howard when the video started? 😂 cheers bro, nice content.
Great vid! I would add....hang on to the part! I have had even my cheap buffer snag and throw my part across the garage! Go easy, go careful. ;)
Thanks for the heads up on that Powertec bench buffer! The Baldor's are so expensive. I'll be buying one of those for sure.
Yes👍 good vid man am gonna do this on my next restore(88 kx 80) could you do a restore series were you restore a 80,s or early 90,s motorcross bike up to new using all your knowledge
2stroke mx classics please do a series on your build I’ll share your channel with all my buds. I’m planning to do a build on an 89 kx 80
I find it very satisfying to polish aluminum, brass, copper and stainless. It definitely messy and you will be black. It's still fun.
Best and most informative site that I've seen on polishing I greatly thank you for it
I have a bunch of steel parts from my Southbend Heavy 10 L lathe. Pieces like hand wheels, handles and dials. What do you recommend I use on them? I want them polished and I plan on filling in the micrometer marks with black enamel model paint after polishing.
I’m going to drive you nuts with questions 😬
Paul.
This was a great video thanks for sharing and taking it thru all the steps!!
