I remember one year before I got married I decided to make everybody a homemade scarf.there were bits and pieces left over and I made one for myself with all the bits and pieces and it's the most beautiful scarf I've ever made and everybody just loved that gift and I got the yarn for next to nothing...it was absolutely awesome and I loved every minute...and I still have the scarf that I made out of the bits and piecesand every time I swear this certain coat I put thatscarf on and I always get a positive comment...it's really something when you can do something for someone else...I get so much joy from it that it's almost selfish

Thank you, Emmy, for reminding me of what I did with my yarn, when I was broke and wanted to give a gift to my mom. I loved to crochet and had many “scraps” of yarn. So, I crocheted a large granny square afghan, using the random balls of yarn. A couple of years later, I went to visit Mom, and she had that afghan on the back of her couch. She was very proud of it, and told me it was the most beautiful afghan she ever saw.

Hi Debbie, what a thoughtful & remarkable daughter you are by your creation of such a special afghan for your mom, so lovely that it was proudly displayed on the back of her couch. But then having her sincerely tell you it was the most beautiful afghan she’d ever seen must have been something you’ll always remember. Although I’m guessing you didn’t realize it when writing your comment, it’s very telling of your overall character: that you’re genuine, as well as very resourceful, i.e., making such a special & beautiful afghan “using the random balls of yarn.” And even though you used “scraps” to crochet the gift for your mom, it was created by you, her daughter possessing a heart filled with love that poured into your work. Your gift was then received & treasured in that same spirit.
Thank you for your comment. It truly touched me.

I had a giggle when you mentioned just stay out of dollar stores, Walmart, thrift stores, tag sales…I don’t drive anymore and have to depend on my husband to take me to the store. He routinely asks me if I want to go to a store and I usually say no because there’s really nothing I need 🤷‍♀️. We do go grocery shopping for loss leaders and we go to Costco every couple months. That’s the extent of my shopping in stores.
Surprisingly, my last Costco visit was only 15 minutes from the time I entered the store and got back in the car 🤯🤯🤯🤯 and I only got the 4 specific items on my list 😍. My husband was stunned when I was back so fast… he had barely gotten a parking spot 😃
My goal now is to STAY OUT OF AMAZON🤭🤭🤭🤭🤭🤭

Another tip,if impulse shopping is a problem, try having everything delivered or do curbside pickup.
You still get whatever you need, but it cuts the temptation of overspending because you are not in the store

My local library gives each of their patrons a weekly balance of $7 for printing and copying. So, free copying and printing, which is far cheaper than buying an ink cartridge for my printer. Weather permitting, I ride my bike, so I get exercise as well! As for sweet treats, a local restaurant chain bakes their own goodies, then discounts the day old treats. Again, weather permitting, I ride my bike to the restaurant and get a day old treat. My local thrift store is having a 50 cent sale. I went in yesterday with a list of things that I needed.

I haven’t done very well but…. I did use Christmas money to make my purchases. I still have £100 of my salary left and haven’t gone into my over draft which is a huge achievement for me. This is the first time in my life that I’ve tried to be responsible with money (I’m ashamed to admit this😢) so while I’ve made some purchases I have learnt a lot. January has been a good month. I don't like getting out when it's cold. Been eating from the freezer and the pantry. I love using throw pillow covers . I fold mine neatly in Ziploc bags and hang them with clip hangers in the closet. This way I can see all of them and grab whichever one I want easily. Takes up a lot less space than storing lots of pillows

Auntie Emmy and Uncle Paul - this low spend January has been fanastic - my overall spending has been down and its wonderful. I was doing a fridge inventory while listening to this episode and I was planning on going to the grocery store for milk and other things. But when I saw how much fresh produce we had and other items i’ve decided to make a menu using what we have. The biggest lesson I’ve learned is check my home first before purchasing anything. We have plenty to get us through until next weekend and then I’ll stock up only on those loss leaders and other things we truly need. Going without doesn’t mean that we are lacking - it just means we’re being creative and stretching.

Great video thanks Emmy and Paul! I love the view from your library- just so special. Libraries are so important. Here in the UK cash strapped councils are always threatening to close them, but they are a lifeline for so many. Ours has free tea and coffee making facilities, a coat rack where people donate unwanted (clean) coats for those who might not be able to afford one. They have games areas where people can sit and do a bit of a puzzle or scrabble. They are a warm place for those struggling to heat their homes too. ❤

I really loved your library visit. My community has too many people who've never even been to the library.
My budget buster was not waiting longer to buy things on my list of needs. I ended up doing two purchases online instead of one, which meant I spent extra on shipping. In the future, I will schedule online shopping for the end of the month.
About inventories: I dedicated a pantry shelf to food expiring in the next six months. It's the mainstay of menu planning.

I started a budget notebook and no spend/low spend at the start of the year. There are two fully stocked freezers here as well and the refrigerator and a full pantry with home canned food. I haven't been to the grocery store since before New Years and I am shocked with how much I have saved already- or should I say I am shocked at how much I did NOT save before! My mind is blown already. These kinds of things are exactly what we are doing. I only spend a little for what we need to supplement that is not stored- like dairy and produce, but being much mindful about what is bought so it can all actually get used and not wasted.

For me, the biggest meal plan and hence budget buster, is forgetting to take meat out of the freezer in eniugh time for it to thaw. I leave 3 lines under each day of my meal plan grid/ chart. I write 1-ish word prep reminders on the day they are to take place. So, often 2 days before using a piece of meat I write it down in that day's column.
I also pre-prepare veggies so that ideally, I'm only cutting, chopping, dicing, shredding one item per day. If I'm dicing onions, I dice what is needed for the next few days; as needed, I cut full onions so I don't have partials in the fridge. The same with carrots, celery, and more.

January has been a great month for us - our food bill is about half of what is usually is because we've made a commitment to go to Aldi's for our groceries (which is about 15-20 min away). We spend SOOOO much less there, mainly because there are fewer items from which to choose. I find that I spend more money in big supermarkets because there's a lot more impulse buying. And we're certainly NOT starving lol. We've also spent $0 on anything that isn't essential. We actually have quite a bit of money left at the end of this month compared to what we usually have. Imagine that lol. We're going to try and carry this forward to February and beyond - it's become a bit of a contest to see how we can do! :)

Rather than buying BRAND NEW CLOTHES every season of your growing child's life... get 2nd hand clothes because there are trillions of things out there - even clothes nice enough for family photo shots. If you HAVE to have a brand spanking new outfit for portraits - then do it & turn around and sell them. Hand-me-downs to siblings / cousins / neighbors are such a blessing. And then do it for your own clothes.

I did have a $5 Michael’s voucher that was about to expire and instead of going to the store I ordered online with in store pickup and it only cost me $1…I was so happy! We always leave the house with a beverage and snack…no drive through for us. I remember ants on a log 😂. Our electric oven coil burned out a few days ago and the appliance part pros website wanted $152 for the part…my husband looked it up on Amazon and it was $40…big savings! We’ve done this before with other parts as well and Amazon has always been cheaper. Same as you Emmy, I shop my home for decor ❤ and have been using my beloved favorites for years; changing things up a bit here and there, but I don’t need more cause I love what I already have. Thank you both for all you do for us and for always encouraging us, you are both so very appreciated and loved 🥰 Dixie too❣️ Be well and stay warm. Love and blessings from Southwest Florida 🌞🌴🌺

Inflation has totally robbed me of the ability to over spend. I am down to needs and never wants. I have always been frugal but used to have wiggle room for the occasional treat. Those days are just a good memory for me. I am saving every spare dime because everything keeps going up. Food, utilities, health insurance, health care costs, car insurance, home insurance….a plumber was needed this week and he charged me DOUBLE for the same junk parts I could have gotten at the hard ware store. How do I know? Because he replaced the junk I replaced myself from the hardware store. It’s all plastic JUNK. The upside is I own my own home and car…the negative is that a friend had a car accident NOT HER FAULT and it took 7 weeks to get parts and get it fixed. It’s really sobering what is happening to us all. For me, frugality used to be a choice. Now it’s a necessity and I never worked for 4O plus years for THAT.

My sister came to visit and knew I was doing a no/low spent. She had "mad money" from her stepmother and treated us to happy hour snacks & drinks the first night, her friend surprised us and bought breakfast the next morning and she lumped a few purchases I made with her haul at Trader Joe's so I made out like a bandit! I've been eating out of my pantry and made us a nice chicken marsala dinner (only the shallot came from Trader Joe's). She also has a better eye for fashion and helped me mix and match my clothes in ways I never thought of. So far this month, I've paid off one cc, almost (but may) paying off a second one and will continue into February. I've built momentum and am loving the results!

Great tips, Emmy! I always buy family packs of meat when on sale and repackage for meals for myself. Haven't spent a penny on food yet in Jan and don't plan on grocery shopping until Feb. No unnecessary purchases either. I did have a new sump pump installed, but that is necessary. A plumber friend installed it for free, and I paid cash for the pump. I was doing pretty well with the no spend low spend until my car started making noises and is now in the shop. I feel like any progress we made will be lost. So frustrating. I had the same issue last year - I'd saved £100 by selling small items and clothes then - poof 😮 - my phone died and a replacement cost me £120. It was initially disappointing but then I realized, great, I have the money, that's so helpful. Being mindful about spending and saving money is always positive and will stand us in good stead.

It may seem like you're back to square one, but you are much better off having cut back on spending earlier in the month than you would have been if you had not had a low spend/no spend month. We just had to have a new alternator put on our van and that set us back almost $500, but we are thankful we had it to take care of the car expense. Hang in there and don't get discouraged. I'm glad you're planning on next month.

I'm doing great for the no spend challenge. At the beginning I thought I was saving for a "bucket list" trip to Scotland, but then my youngest told me they are taking me. Then I learned I needed a new mattress, so I was able to use that money for a nice mattress that's really been helping my hip pain.
I cleaned out a lot of random food in the freezers..... we had some pretty creative meals.
I still have more freezer items I'd like to use up in preparation for the upcoming gardens, so I'm continuing the challenge through February. 😀
I believe it was a great idea for you to actually show clips of your library .... such an underused resource!

  • @canadianjaneoriginal

Very encouraging video! This is all on par. The no spend has been hard when it comes to buying things on liquidation to put away for future use or gifting. I live this frugal all year round. However, when there is a sale on something that is normally priced much higher, it has to be purchased so I don’t overspend later on. It happens with essentials, but occasionally in craft supplies. The thrift store must be avoided because you always buy something when you go. Best not to go in. I look forward to February just for the thrift store!
Your library is fantastic! The snack box is genius if you are out all day and cannot eat out while shopping. We often starve until we get home tired, unwilling to cook. Instead, snacking between stores can help with energy and to buy less in grocery stores. NEVER GO GROCERY SHOPPING on an empty stomach. I agree that dollar store and Walmart are detrimental to budget busting. As are Michaels and all craft supply stores. My trick, is to add everything I need in my cart ONLINE. Then walk away. I guarantee when u go back to the cart you will delete 3/4 of everything out of there. And your shopping appetite subsides. Works for me. Its like fake gambling, for gambling addicts on no real bet games. I PRE SHOP. Then it just gets deleted. Its strange but it works everytime.

@@FrugalMoneySaverIt does! I have been doing it since 2000s with ebay, then Etsy, now mostly Amazon, Walmart and Michaels. I may not have gotten through hard times not doing it. It helps a lot. Its a trial run shopping you can say, or “Pre-Shopping”. The need subsides when you see how unrealistic your carts get. You dwindle down to core essentials or emptying your cart completely in the days after.

Have been enjoying being cozy at home watching library dvd movies and reading books. Just watched “ Pillow Talk “ with Doris Day and Rock Hudson. Amazing how society has changed in so many ways and adore seeing the glamorous outfits and cool cars or roadsters as they called them. Your comment on using what you have/shopping your home for house decor made me think about how I’ve been wanting to buy a bird bath for my backyard for some time now, and was shopping online for bird baths yesterday. I didn’t realize how expensive these are or that many look like the dishes that go under a planter. I remembered that I had a huge planter dish (that goes under the planter to hold excess water) in my garage. I am going to clean it and set it out with some water and see if my local birds like it. If they don’t, then, I will save up money to buy a used birdbath.

I love to send cards for birthdays, get well and sympathy for those who have lost a loved one. The price of cards at the grocery store or card shop are ridiculous! I ONLY buy cards at Dollar Tree. They have some that are 2 for $1.25, and then others are $1.25 each. Either way, you save a ton of money. That’s my usual reason for going there. Now if I could just stay away from the other aisles…….🧐🧐🤣🤣🤣

I thought there’s no way I could save that much. Well started keeping up w/ daily spending. Man, never realized I spent so much per week! Journaling your daily spending is a Real 👁 opener😳The Dollar Tree had a breakfast cookie? I find keeping my pantry inventory by subject easier to refer to. Meat & fish - canned, freeze dried, dried and frozen, Vegetables - canned and frozen, baking supplies (flour, sugar, yeast, baking powder, soda etc.), condiments/spices, fruit - canned, frozen, freeze dried, dried, refrigerated cheese, milk, yogurt etc., miscellaneous such as pudding mixes, jello, nuts, peanut butter. It makes finding the item you're searching for faster. Also, never forget to mark the item used off the inventory and to add the item to your shopping list as soon as you use it. BTW I add the item to my shopping list when opened not when the container is empty.

Great tips! My birthday was this month and my sister picked up a couple of jigsaw puzzles for me at a thrift store. She knows how I love to spend winter evenings (it also keeps my hands busy so I'm not snacking, lol). I LOVE them. One tip I took years ago - and it paid off - was to buy home decor that could be used for more than one holiday. I have a red tablecloth, red throw pillows and red candles that make an appearance for several holidays. I have kept old Valentine's Day cards that I thought were especially beautiful and they are put on display this time of year - along with some garland I made using heart cutouts that I attached to ribbon years ago. Thanks for showing us your Valentine's Day decor - it looks very festive!

Unfortunately, Amazon has thousands 😮 to choose from. If you’re doing a no spend January you may want to wait before you start browsing.😉You will surely find some you like! ☺️

Fantastic video! I am doing better at using up what I have in my craft room - discovering I have some pretty cool stuff! Have a good week end and I gotta tell you your library is pretty awesome. We have a brand new library and I'm not impressed with it.

Hello there, such a great video again!❤Doing fairly well myself. There was some needed expenses in January, like the vaccination for my animal friend, but nothing unplanned and nothing that busted the budget, yippieh! My January started very busy from the start, at work we were short staffed and the reminder of slowing down before leaving the house can't come often enough! That was actually the best tip for me today. I grab at least a bottle of water before leaving the house but some hot tea and cookies or such are much better! Getting back to that now and will continue, promise. It is so nice that we can encourage each other here!

Our downtown Foodland closed earlier this week. The stock was gradually marked down and the store was almost completely empty when the time came. The new store opened Thursday. For people like me who don't drive, it's quite a walk. And right across the highway from No Frills. My girlfriend offered to take me shopping so we checked out the new store....beautiful more food to choose from than I have seen in years. And we went to the No Frills as well.
I spent money that I wouldn't have this month buying food 50% off. Now to use it up!

Lots of good ideas here. I have gotten off on my freezer inventory and plan to remedy that. I also think one thing people need to do to limit spending is to remove any financial payment info from all online accounts. It takes more time to input that info each time and allows more time to consider if a purchase is a need or a want. This also guards against fraud.
