This is not something that's done on a daily or weekly basis, but I take old, broken and discarded jewelry and use it to make jeweled Christmas trees. This is something that my Mother did around the holidays for many years, and I am doing my best to keep the tradition alive!
I bet that is so pretty and such an enjoyable project.
@@martinawilson5361 Thank you Martina! It's amazing that some old, ugly jewelry can become beautiful again! And you are right, it is a very enjoyable project for me!
Love this idea!
I have seen those - they are gorgeous!
Love this ❤️❤️❤️
I had a beautiful coffee mug that had developed a small crack in the bottom and could no longer hold liquid. It was so pretty, and I didn't want to throw it out. I repurposed it as a pencil/pen holder. Now I still get to enjoy it! Blessings!
Love that!
I don’t have anything really creative. I use plastic bags from grocery shopping to line my smaller trash cans. I used to keep bread sacks and teach my grandchildren how to braid. Just snip the bag on each side and go up to where it’s sealed and you have three strips to learn how to braid. I’m 66 and my great grandmother kept us occupied for hours with this.
Great video. So useful and wise.
Love 💕 and Hugs. 💙💙💙
Linda, love the learning to braid idea!
Thanks Emmy and Paul. Ok, here's my repurposed project. I repurposed a $10 old double bed headboard (with the sliding door for books and alarm clock) into my TV stand. I put my DVD player in one side and DVD's on the other side. All my friends and family love how it looks, and I do too.
So clever!!
Something I use that is considered old fashioned by some is using Mason jars. I can and ferment in them, store kitchen appropriate portions of dry goods (flour, sugar, etc) in them which I've taken from bulk storage buckets...and I keep dried herbs and tinctures in them as well. Mason jars are useful for so many things!
I buy my favourite jam and after it’s empty ,I use the jars for soups or stews for work lunches ,, perfect size ,just pop into microwave and lunch is ready 😊
They have a pretty Gingham lid ,,people at work say ,Great idea 🎉
I like to store leftover food in canning jars. It stores nicely in the refrigerator.
I do too .
Love my Mason jars!
Yes! I do too and love it!
I always try to shop my home first. Sometimes, it just takes looking at something in a different way.
Yes, so true!
My dear friends. Whip up your dried egg shells in the food processor to a powder. The calcium remains in the soil and helps to make it more porous. Works wonderfully well. Thank you for all your hard work in creating such delightful videos. Best wishes from New Zealand.
Thanks for the tip!
I do this & I often give a container of the egg shell dust to my sister to feed to her chickens -as it has most of the nutrients they need in it
This may not be an old-fashioned thing, but I used to have a trash service where they come by every week and pick up my trash. I stopped that service and I bought a permit to go to the Disposal waste dump and the cost saved me $340 a yearbecause it cost me $400 for the trash pick up and it only cost me $60 for the dump permit
Great frugal tip!
Love this tip!
That's wonderful! Where I live, if we don't participate in the garbage pick up service, they will turn off our water sevice!!!
I’m still enjoying a no spend life! I initially thought I would feel deprived but instead I felt freedom. It forced me to jump off the consumerism hamster wheel. I now have more time at home to create a nurturing environment. ❤️ Thank you!
Yes, exactly! So wonderful!
Me too! The weather has been cold, snowy so I just stayed home puttering, reading, sorting thru papers to toss old stuff. It is helping me to get ready to do a new will and everything that goes with that. Bought groceries and Dollar store for some stationary beginning of January. Being a fair distance from town always stock up in the fall and canning etc, freezers full so no real reason to go shopping. Will be going to library tomorrow to pick up books, movies etc that they have on hold for me, is about every 6 weeks. Since I'm an active 70 year old, my exercise consists of 10-20 mins daily working on shovelling my long drive. 10 mins if it's minus 25 and 20 mins if only minus 10C. That way still in shape for gardening season. When it hits minus 40 I look out the window with a hot chocolate and admire the view!
To tell the truth have never been much of a shopper except for fabric stores. Thanks to everyone as still keep learning more from all the comments. A great community here.
After cleaning my spice cupboard, I watched this video. WOW!!! I retrieved and cleaned the containers I just trashed. I'll use them for saving seeds from the garden this Summer.
Great idea!
My friends mother used to use her cooled water from boiling potatoes and other veggies to water her garden. I'd say that is real frugality ! 😊
Yes! We add that water to our compost too!
I keep that vege broth to make soup
A friend told me about a local restaurant that will save their gallon sized olive jars for customers. I use these free jars to organize my pantry, and to ferment my homemade kombucha and vinegars.
Such a frugal tip! Thanks!
Love frugal hacks!! ❤
The green tops on the “shaky cheese” like the Parmesan on the store shelf, fit perfectly on a regular Mason jar. I keep flour in one so it’s handy for dusting the counter when rolling out cookies or biscuits.
I have plastic ice cube trays in my vanity drawer to separate my sets of earrings. I’ve also used the cut-off cuff from old socks as a can cozy, to cover my watch when using hairspray, and for holding the wound up cord for my iron.
Plastic egg cartons are good in drawers as well.. and to freeze small portions of things
16oz peanut butter tops also fit perfectly on regular mouth mason jars.
Thanks so much!
Oh!! Thank you!!! I wish I knew sooner! I wil do this!
That's good tip will use it starting today.
My kids are young teens. When they outgrow favourite t-shirts and are saf that they no longer fit, I put a cheap cushion stuffer inside and they have a new favourite cushion in their bed.
I have also saved motifsand cuttings from their favourite clothes since they were babies. When they leave home I will turn all the pieces into a quilt or blanket.
Very creative!
I wanted a Valentine table runner for my buffet but couldn’t find one that was in my price range. So I took an old pink tablecloth that I bought at a tag sale for a couple of dollars and cut out a piece from the middle that was 14” x 84”. I hemmed it with my sewing machine and voila I have a table runner.
Win! Win!
Hi Emmy and Paul. I have been following your channel for ages and I just love the way you cover so many topics for being frugal. I’ve never commented before. Todays topic of repurposing items made me think you would like to hear about my tip.
When I buy dishwashing liquid I always transfer it to an empty pump bottle that used to contain body wash, but any pump bottle will do. This way I get a measured dose of dishwashing liquid and it makes the product go much further. A normal squeeze often gives you far more bubbles than you actually need for an average wash.
I live in Western Australia and I thought you would be thrilled to know that folk watch you all around the world.
Best wishes to you both and every Wednesday and Saturday you are the first video I watch on TH-cam tube. Marilyn Bennett.
Marilyn, thanks so much for the kind and encouraging comment!!
The grinder hack was great! I have been disappointed before that I was not able to refill the grinder with bulk peppercorn and had to buy a new refillable grinder for that purpose. Nothing new, but I use different empty containers, jars, and so on as drawer and shelf organizers. I use junk mail and other items which are usually thrown away for my junk-journaling. No need to buy stickers, ephemera, background paper and such. I know the name implies using "junk", but many crafters buy all the supplies.
So true!
Hello Emmy! I also use broken jewelry pieces, but in my case I use them to add some charms to the spine of handmade junk journals. I use ice cube freezer containers to make my own garlic, onion, herb and tomato mixes that I freeze and then use for soup or stews starters, like bouillon cubes (once frozen, I pop them in a plastic bag in the freezer). I still have in my drawers old shoe boxes (without the tops) to separate socks and undies. I use an electric coffee grinder that I bought at a yard sale for one dollar to make my own oat flour for oat cream, and to grind my own dry herbs for my herb mixes. I save all the packaging paper that comes with supplies at my job to make my own junk journal pages. I've used old jeans to make coasters and pot pads. Those are a few ideas :) Happy Birthday Emmy!
Wonderful ideas! Thanks for the birthday wishes!
Now that my children are grown up and in their own homes, we recently cleared out a 'games' cupboard. An old backgammon board - wooden with four sides of a 2 inch depth - was lying at the back and of course the discs were gone. What to do? My husband bought two small lovely brass cupboard 'pulls' and screwed them into two opposite sides of the board and voila! - a very lovely, useful and interesting TRAY was born. I have used this tray many times now and we are thinking of re-purposing a checkboard for yet another tray. Of course, you need a SOLID board (not one that folds) and if there are no sides, my husband said you can buy quarter round and crazy glue them around the edges. Old board games to new trays!!! Thanks for all your inspirational videos - love your channel. Cheers from Toronto.
What a clever idea! I need to share that with Paul!
Hey Emmy and Paul! For your stocks - keep your veggie scraps instead of cutting up produce or using onion powder, etc… I keep all my produce scraps in the freezer too - celery, onions, carrots, basically the stuff you would normally throw out in the compost… then you can make a very rich stock. I do this all the time, and then when I strain the stock, it goes in the compost!
Yes, thanks!
I have done this type of repurpose forever. Long ago remember before plastic bags my grandmother had to hand carry or carry in her apron. I think of her often when I dare not throw away pickle jars, spaghetti sauce jars etc. baskets etc. I clean up the black meat holders from Aldi and use for drawer dividers. I thought it was so funny when grandson said he didn’t want to throw away the cereal box ‘cause he wondered what I might use it for.
Love that! Thrifty and creative!
I started saving glass bottles from peanut butter, pickles, etc to use for food storage instead of buying more plastic storage containers... I remove the labels and run them through the dishwasher. Then I save them in my drawer with my other storage containers and they work great!
Yes, we do that too! Love our jars lol!
I use my food whisk to reach the handle on the window to pull it shut! It's where the kitchen sink is, so I can't reach it without standing on a step stool. I also collect various sizes of jars to store things.
I'm 65 and I have some of my great Grandma's old broken jewellery which she gave to me when I was very young. She must have thought I would like the shiny things.
Happy birthday Emmy! 🎂 🎉❤😊
Thanks for the birthday wishes!
I hate salmon. A friend of mine gave me a can & told me to make it like tuna salad. So i did. Added homemade mayo made out of Greek yogurt, that I didn't know what I was going to do with it, celery, diced pickles salt pepper. It is delicious!
That's a win!
I use old berry containers. The clamshell kind to start plants. They have holes in the bottom for drainage, and the cover makes a great greenhouse. Put them in old meat trays from the grocery store to keep them from leaking onto anything.
When purchasing anything, I take the container it comes in into consideration. If it doesn’t cost more to buy it, I buy something in a reusable container.
Great idea, will start saving mine.
LoL
I have paid a bit more for something I needed of the container was fabulous 🤩
I do the same with clamshells and they make great frost protection for tender plants by covering the plant with the deeper part, then putting an old sheet or actual frost blanket over them.
Love this idea!
Same here
I used a large garbage can and my husband drilled some holes for drainage. I keep two going, we have lots of pine needles to add between layers of scraps as the brown layer. I no longer pour out old potting soil when changing pots, I pour it in the compost as well. I keep coffee cans, plastic or other for my husband to use in the garage for nails, screws etc. Happy Birthday Emmy
Thanks so much for the birthday wishes!
I saw a gardening video where you bury a garbage can like this about a foot deep in the ground. Make sure there are holes under the buried part. This allows worms to do their magic in your compost and it breaks everything down very quickly. I bought two garbage cans and will be setting them up this Spring.
Hi, Emmy and Paul!
I reuse the wax left in the bottom of my jar candles as "wax melts" in my tea light burner. They smell just as beautiful as the wax melt squares I would buy! 😊😊
Great tip!
When I buy sponges, I cut them in half. They fit better inside glasses and smaller containers. When they start getting older and icky, I put them in with my cleaning supplies. I can use a sponge on a deep cleaning project and just toss it out when I am done. I also save containers, along with glass jars and use them for a variety of ideas…food, crafts, etc. I reuse shoe boxes in my drawers to separate various objects.
So smart! We call our old sponges "The Floor Sponge!" We use it when something drips on the floor lol.
I've been saving my jars now and making my own refrigerator pickles and pickled eggs for my husband. We both like them so much better then the store bought.
Oh yes, so yummy!
The frugal group today had a lot of great ideas. I love reading all the comments and get great ideas. Happy Birthday, Emmy!
Thanks for the birthday wishes!
I use peanut butter lids for my regular ( not wide) mason or ball jars. Not for canning just for storing In the refrigerator .
Smart!
I use Rubbermaid plastic totes for composting-drill holes along the bottom about one inch up from the bottom - can use the tote top and drill a couple holes for aeration or if no lid can use grill inserts and put over totes with bricks so critters cannot get into the totes. Keep by back door so easy to fill with kitchen scraps. Also keep a small bucket in fridge to fill with veg peelings, etc and when full empty into compost tote outside. That way no roaches or insects get in while in house.
Great ideas!
I try to get all the mustard out of a jar or squeeze bottle. When it's as clean as I can get it with just a little left in the jar, I make a vinaigrette in the bottle adding olive oil, lemon juice or vinegar, salt and pepper and whatever dried herbs I like. Shake the bottle and the mustard is cleaned out, helps emulsify the dressing, adds a tang, and the bottle makes it easy to store in the fridge and serve up when you need it.
Great idea!
Hi😊
I take care of all worn out jeans and make new things out of them. When we needed a new bedspread, I used many of the pants to make it. We have used this every day for ten years.
Greetings from Norway
Great idea!!
It never occurred to me to deliberately keep broken jewelry! Great tip. I also want to start an outdoor compost pile without a major output of money. Will definitely research a DIY for it.
I have an old wooden toy box from my childhood that my Dad may have built--my sister and I aren’t sure about it. Anyway, I now keep our medical devices in it: grounding mat, neck massager, heating pad, etc. The room looks so much better now!
-Brenda
Brenda, great idea!
Thank you. I started a pantry and freezer inventory. I know what is in my freezer and pantry and the date on the item. This has saved me so much money. Your videos inspire me. My husband and I are retired and living on a fixed income.
So happy our videos are encouraging!
I was disheartened when the headboard to my grandmother's waterfall bedroom set, split where the sidewalls connects, making it unusable. After years of storage, we put the headboard under a window and use it as our headboard, with a separate frame. And the footboard we trimmed down to make it into a shelf in our bathroom. Our antique dining room tables support broke leaving the table in 2 pieces. My husband mounted the 2 halves to a wall under a window in our spare room, which is now my desk area.😊
What a wonderful creative repurpose!
I'm cooking a whole chicken in the crockpot tomorrow. Then I'm making stock in my IP. Book club is at my house tonight. I cut up veggies and saved the trimmings for my chicken stock. I also made homemade rolls, sliced my own cheese and made a from scratch cake to serve to my book loving friends. No trips to the grocery store! My youngest son is a tent camper. I found a great nylon toiletry bag at a thrift store for 50 cents. I'm making him a first aid kit out of a vinyl apron that I also got at the thrift store. I will fill his toiletry bag and first aid kit with sample sized items that I find on sale. Hope you have a Happy and wonderful Birthday, Emmie!
Great tips! Thanks for the birthday wishes!
I love your tips. I’m a jar saver. I reuse glass candle jars with lids to store hair ties, cotton balls, Qtips and more in the bath room. Our local German mustard manufacturer has the best jars. I redid my spice cabinet in those jars.
What a clever idea!
If the heart locket you showed still opens and closes, you could repurpose it as a wearable perfume diffuser. Simply cut absorbent material to fit, spray perfume or extract on it, close it and wear it. This way, you get the pleasure of wearing a scent without having to scrub it off when you want a different one.😁
What a brilliant idea! Thank you!
I keep old worn tablecloths, clothes that are ripped and unsalvageable, anything made from lightweight fabric, cut it into squares, and use them as tags. I also have an empty tissue box that I store them in neatly and just pull them out one at a time like a Kleenex.
So smart!
It's not a big project, but I've repurposed commercial glass jars and cans from vegetables to make jar and "tin can" candles. To the glass jars, I add some ribbon and twine, and I spray paint the cans and add some embellishments like twine and wooden dangly accents. My husband handles the bigger projects-lol. He's repurposed pallets and other pieces of reclaimed wood to make my raised garden beds, risers for my grow bags, my desk, an end table in our living room, a crate-style book shelf, and our "chips and salsa table".
Laura, I bet those candles are wonderful! So great hubby is so handy!
@@FrugalMoneySaver thanks! His background in architectural woodworking does come in handy. lol
I reuse the netting from onion or oranges to use as scrubbiest for pots and pans, including cast iron. Also I use a cloth shoe storage on the back of my bathroom door to store items like shampoo etc. I repurpose wine crates with lids as extra storage for medicine, art supplies, etc. I also use port boxes as shelves (I worked for liquor distribution branch) that I got for free. I also use old whisky Christmas boxes as jewellery boxes. Also large Classico pasta sauce jars are actual atlas mason jars, so I buy new tops and rings and use them for canning. I also tried reusing that pepper grinder and couldn’t get the lid off so I really appreciate your video share on that. Thanks😊
I also use those nets for scrubbies, it's a shame to waste them. Great minds work alike.
Can you please enlighten me on how to turn those nets into scrubbies? I hate just tossing them into the bin.
Wonderful, Sandra! Thanks for sharing!
@@mostuniquemary I just cut into squares and then ball up the squares. I rinse well after use or throw out if it gets too greasy. I saw a TH-camr (frugal Jo-she quit her channel) sew them into scrubbies. I do all kinds of stuff like using pop tabs to double hang in your closet. That hack you can find on the internet
I repurpose those bags as well. I sew little scrubbies with cotton fabric, filling and the bag. I keep my old machine needles to use for these. They are great for a long time.
We reuse jars, peanut butter jars are great for holding screws and fasteners. Glass jars-I have repainted lids and glued on an old drawer knob to make pretty containers in the bathroom for cotton swabs, cotton rounds, hair ties, barrettes etc.
So smart and thrifty!
I make chicken soup often. I was tired of opening up 10 different seasonings every time, so I repurposed a larger seasoning jar to mix the 10 spices I normally use. I labeled it chicken soup mix.
Great idea!
I keep my fabric scraps because I never know when I'll come up with something small to sew! Fabric scraps are so useful! I really like that repurposing idea for the baskets to put some cloth in them and then use them for food. Great video! 👍🏻
Yes, so true!
I reuse Greenies plastic containers to store random packets such as gravey mixes, tea bags, oatmeal packets to reduce the number of boxes in the pantry. Plastic is see through and they stack. Helps with organization. I reuse bread plastic bags to double and triple bag portioned meat and veggie products for the freezer. Still saving for a food saver system. Next on the list to purchase.
We really love our Food Saver!
The FoodSaver is the bomb! I am sorry I waited so long to get one
I always wash out glass jars , I can store leftovers in them or I give soup to people and they can just throw it away ! Love your videos !! I missed dixie this time !
Dixie sends her love! She was probably napping lol!
After a recent floor tiling project, I took some of the leftover 12x12 tiles, glued four silicone feet (one in each of the corners) on the undersides and made very elegant, sturdy , heat-resistant trivets perfect for my larger items like lasagna trays, etc. Have a great birthday Emmy! You're a special person who deserves a special day! Mrs. D. - H.V.
Thanks so much for the birthday wishes!
I take those leftover tiles, or sometimes I find a few at yard sales or thrift shops, and I sew a padded fabric "pocket" to slip them into. They can then be used as trivets to put hot casserole dishes or pans on to protect one's table or counter.
They also make nice gifts when paired with a basket and pot holders.
Of course, I sew a lot and quilt a little, so I have scrap fabrics and scrap quilt batting on hand. But again, I find lots of fabric to repurpose such as sheets, towels, even clothes like jeans, at the thrift shops and yard sales as well.
Love everyone's frugal suggestions and ideas that you post here!
Love Emmy and Paul's lovely frugal life hacks and all their delicious frugal no-waste recipes! 👏🥰
Glad you had an enjoyable Happy Birthday Emmy! 🎉🥳🎊
Luckily, I haven't yet been "unsubscribed" to you, but I'm sure I would figure it out pretty quickly if I ever do because I really look forward to each new video and watch closely on those days for one to be posted! 😁
My significant other likes to watch them with me to see what Paul is up to, plus he cooks as well so has lots of input about your recipes and frugal ideas. 👌👍
FYI: you can buy a bag of pink Himalayan sea salt at the dollar tree
Thanks!
Great ideas Emmy! You can also put the shaker upside down in a cup of semi hot water for a couple minutes, then use a dry cloth to cover it and pop the lid right off! But I love your dryer idea! When I make my stock the same way, I fill empty plastic peanut butter jars and freeze them. I also have an empty coffee container in my kitchen for scraps to go in for the compost outside which saves me from running in and out all the time. And just so you know rosebushes love banana peels! Wow, I'm glad I'm not the only one who saves broken jewelry too, so many uses like you said!❤
Thanks so very much!
My sister, the diamond queen, lost a diamond out of earrings that had many, many diamonds. Her hairdresser said to put clear nail polish in that spot. It worked! It would probably work on old and new costume jewelry. I keep a small variety of nail polishes to use as touch up paint.
Very smart!
Something that I do is take the last 1/5 of candles, melt them down, and pour it into a jar with a fresh wick. Once I have done this with enough candles, it’s like having a brand new candle that has a variety of smells and layers of different colors. (Since I collected a bunch of old candles, I have a reused candle just for baking smells, wintertime smells, citrus smells, etc.). Just one way to make things last longer. 😊
Such a clever idea! Thanks!
I am making a cookbook for my future granddaughter and grandson. I have my cookbooks out and the book I'm making for them with various recipes strewn out on the table. I'm going to shop my house and find a basket like you have to corral up all the items so I just have to move the basket when we need the whole table. Great motivation! Thanks!
Yes, it helps so much!
The list would be very long if i told you all my gardening tips. I still have a semi large in ground garden that gets tilled every year. I burn it off in the fall and till it in in the spring. It's the way my Dad taught me he grew up on a farm. I also save cardboard for between the rows with straw on top for weed control. If it came out of the garden it goes back into the garden for compost and of course egg shells and coffee grounds are added too. I water bath can so I have not bought pickles, relish, salsa, pasta sauce, garlic, in years. I also don't buy broth anymore it's in the freezer. I can't walk by the $5 chickens at Costco. We also buy beef from a farmer friend every January so thats where the beef bones come from.
All wonderful thrifty, money saving ideas! Thanks so much!
I save containers to give family and friends homemade foods 😋 that way i dont have to worry about getting my Tupperware back!! I also save some for husband's shop!! Nails, screws etc go in them. Easy to organize for him!
So smart!
I always save my empty bread bags because I am only me and I'm extremely cheap so I use those bags to wrap up anything that might be smelly in my trash so I don't have to change the trash quite! Trash bags are expensive
Paul does that too!!
Great video Emmy & Paul. Loved all the hacks. I have great respect for the way you live your lives.
I re-purpose old mugs (pencil & pen holders),
small empty body butter tubs (store jewellery in. Also use to keep lipbalms I use regularly in), pretty jam jars (to put things in for gifts),
small jam jars (to decant hand cream into from a large bottle and keep in my handbag),
pretty biscuit tins and pretty boxes (for storing tapes, glues, markers, batteries, keys, art materials.)
Thanks for all the wonderful things you share with us. May God greatly bless you both as well. ❤
Thank you! Great idea to keep a small hand cream jar!
Tip-use canning jars for broth in freezer. Just don’t fill completely so that it can expand and not break. I find canning jars at goodwill on senior day or when they are the 1/2 off color of the week.
Pleases use caution when freezing glass
Whenever I watch your and Paul’s videos I feel like I am visiting with old friends oh my what a great hack on getting the tops off the grinders that won’t come off! I have several containers that will not let me take the top off! ❤️
@pugpreslar711 You hit the nail on the head about watching Emmie and Paul. I have felt the same way that I am visiting friends.
That makes us so happy to hear that! We feel the same!
I use my Food saver. Which helps me to save so much MOLLA!! 😊😊
Oh YES!! Paul's favorite!
I sell clothing on consignment online for others. Due to stains, holes, etc. I can't sell every item. I recently saw a video about making rag rugs, so am saving the unsellable items to repurpose them into something completely different - rugs.
Oh what a great idea!
One thing I find especially useful is saving an empty dish soap bottle. To this I add shavings from a bar of soap and hot water... This is then used to like clean the toilet first thing in the morning clean the kitchen sink so I don't have to waste my beautiful Dawn to do that anything where a quick scrub and a little soap is needed. Saves on more expensive cleaning items
That's a great idea!
You can use hot water instead of a hair dryer.
One hack I use is if I have nail polish that's old,and drying up,add a drop or two of nail polish remover,or thinner to the bottle, secure top, shake.
Hand sanitizer also works.
Liquid makeup dryed out? A few drops of saline will loosen it up,a little.
Thanks for sharing!
I bought a scented candle in a cup. I use the cup now to drink coffees. I left like an inch of candle wax there n run it on really hot water every thing melted it out. I love the cup.
That's great!
I repurpose old pill bottles for sewing needles and buttons.
Yes, they are useful!
Hi Emmy and Paul. Looking around the house, I use a mason jar for a pencil and pen holder. I use an old colorful mug for change. I use a small little old fashioned pretty saucer to put my jewelry on at night. And a use a large canister with out the lid for my kitchen spoons and spatulas. We try to reuse everything!!! I have to try and reuse the grinder! A very fun video ❤ Jeannie
Wonderful tips, Jeannie! Thanks for sharing!
Except for the grinder I do all of the things you do. I repurpose a lot of things. A always remove the labels from jars of food and reuse them. I use old Paremesan containers to hold baking soda for easy cleaning or for the fridge odors (I buy it in bulk). I have one for the kitchen and one for the bathroom. I also took the labels of large dawn dishsoap containers and reused them for storing vinegar. That squirt top makes it easier to clean things with. I also use them for plant food or watering indoor plants. I save my soap slivers and make a new bar of soap every several months. I save apple cores in the freezer and when i have enough i make vinegar. Honestly I think I could write a repurpose book😂 Loved your video! I will try the vinegar next time I make broth!
I found your repurposed items interesting and would enjoy reading more!
All great ideas! Thanks!
My plan this week worked brilliantly. I picked up a discounted ham joint , boiled then roasted it for Sunday . I made a vegetable and ham soup with the boiling liquor . We had Tuesday dinner with that and there are 8 portions of that in our freezer . We had a sandwich lunch on Monday and there is a chunk left for chicken and ham pie. The joint was £7. Such a bargain and delicious meals for the week. Great video !
Fantastic! So creative and frugal!
Great use of the basket for organizing papers. Great minds-I just started the “waste” from a rotisserie chicken in my slow cooker. I plan to use the broth to make chicken vegetable barley soup today. I saved a handful of breast meat that stuck to the breast bone so it won’t overcook and fall apart. I love to add cooked barley to soups.
Yes, me too!
I save egg containers for starting seeds
Smart!
I make all my clothing now except bras. I repurpose knit shirts into underwear. Family visited and accidentally ripped the bedsheet; I ripped them into approx squares about 12x12 and used them for handkerchiefs. Still had a lot of the sheet so I made pillow cases, paperless paper towels and cleaning clothes that are 2 sided ( flannel or old towels on one side.). So many eco uses for things to have a 2nd or 3rd life.
Very creative and frugal!
i have found that some prepackaged spice grinders, such as from Aldi, will have the grinder portion reverse threaded so you can refill them by twisting them “Righty Loosy.”
Thanks for the tip!
I save paper. The backs of envelopes mail came in become scratch paper and grocery lists(inside the envelope you can put coupons). I also shred the paper to make homemade fire starters for the woodstove... a wax paper cup, filled with shredded paper, and melted old wax poured over the top. I have even used it in the mulch pile. And of course it's become kindling for fire starting too. Prescription pill bottles and small jars, small envelopes that have lost their greeting cards, all work for storing seeds.
Great ideas!
I repurpose Vera Bradley purses and backpacks, both mine and my daughters. When they are no longer in good enough shape to use I cut them up and reuse the material for checkbook covers and other items. I keep all the clips and zippers from them too.
Great idea!
I always swish water around before I throw way dishwashing detergent, washing soap, dish soap to get the remainder that sticks to the inside. I usually get one or two more uses of the product by doing that. It’s amazing the amount that sticks to the inside you otherwise couldn’t get out.
Yes, that's a great tip!
Paul might get a kick out of my storage hack for soup broth. I put 2 cups of broth into a plastic container and freeze it. As I only have the freezer under my fridge the plastic containers take up too much space. I pop the frozen broth into a food saver bag and seal - takes up less space and no freezer burn.
Love our Food Saver LOL!
Gosh, I’ve repurposed so many things. I love antiques and haven’t bought any in years but when I bought them, they had to serve a purpose. I have an old grain scoop that serves as a magazine holder. I have a 6-sectioned wooden tool carrier that fits perfectly on top of the toilet tank. It holds rolled up washcloths, a container with Q-tips and one with hair ties. I use baskets for storage everywhere, including plastic dollar tree baskets jn the freezer to keep organized: poultry in one, fish in another, beef & pork in a third. It makes it easier to find what I’m looking for. And regarding the grinders, I used to buy the small grinders, thinking refillable ones were so expensive. Last year I traded my Fetch app points for an Amazon gift card and bought myself refillable grinders that were under $15. Now I buy peppercorns and pink himilayan sea salt in bulk to refill the grinders. Right now the ones I bought are on sale for $13 (orig $25). They have adjustable grind tops on them, as well. They were a great purchase that really cost me nothing.
Right now I’m on the lookout for napkins so I can use them in place of paper towels. So far, no luck. But hopefully I’ll find some at yard sales this spring.
Look for cotton dish towels on sale after a holiday at the grocery store, cut in half and hem. They work great and easy to wash.
I got mine at a church run thrift store.
Yes, we did away with paper towels and napkins on a regular basis! Cloth napkins are cheap at tag sales or thrift sales!
I just love your excitement at the new hack, it is always fun to find a new hack! Thanks for always encouraging us to be frugal!
LOL! I do get excited don't I?
@@FrugalMoneySaver you do and it is always a joy to hear excitement in others. 😀
Happy Birthday Emmy I hope you have a BEAUTIFUL AND BLESSED DAY ❤️🌷🎂🎉🎈🫶🏻😃
Thanks so much!
Once again a marvelous video. I too have my mother's button box plus the one that was my grandmother's. One of my granddaughters was so enthralled with the collection that I started one for her, asking family and friends to donate buttons to get hers started. I also watch for bits of jewelry at tag sales but I use it to make jeweled Christmas trees. My best repurposing hack: A neighbor was throwing out an old wooden ladder, I needed something for my sweet peas to grow on so I took the ladder apart, hung it on the solid fence behind the the sweet peas, worked great, saved money not buying a trellis.
What a clever idea using the ladder!
I use empty toilet paper rolls as cord holders on my appliances. Sometimes, I cover them with some leftover wallpaper to add a decorative touch. Learned this trick from my wonderful mother.
That's a great idea!
Or cook the bones and skin to make chicken stock without the veggies becauseyou can put the carrots, onions, celery, garlic into the soup fresh. But you could fish out the remaining chunks of carrot and add them to the stock - blending them into the stock.
Yes, we add ours after
So glad that you demonstrated how to remove pepper grinder top!! This is so good to know! I repurpose jars for storing beans & thawed frozen fruit in the fridge 5:18
Wonderful!
Loved the peppercorn hack. I’ve never bought one since I have always had (very old) pepper grinder. Nice to know
We store all our collections of buttons, misc screws, in clear jars so we can see what’s in it.
I have a big decorative mason jar that I have my misc collection of vintage and new measuring spoons and cups. More organized than in the drawer. If I have too many then I know it’s time to declutter
Yes baskets are great organizational tools. Eliminates “piles”
Thanks for a fun video!
Sheryl, just wanted to say a big thank you for the birthday cards you sent Paul and I! It was so kind of you to think of us! We appreciate you! Really loved my stickers too lol!
@@FrugalMoneySaverEmmy I am so happy you and Paul got your birthday cards…stickers are fun to put on cards we send out or your planner. Hope have a fantastic birthday!!! Have a Fun Super Bowl Party!🎈 🎁🎉🎊🎂🥳🧁
Loved this Emmy. Still have my mom's costume jewelry bag. Does come in handy. I need to find my grinder I put up. I repurpose jars, cereal bags to dredge chicken in, reuse my washed aluminum foil and parchment paper"shake off what I can when making biscuits of pie dough. let sit and dry brush of and use multiple times. Hope okay loved your compost segment. You should look up Robbie and Gary Gardening Easy. she does this and also grows several things in pots in her containers. so much info to repurpose thing and if you don't have big growing area.
Thanks for sharing!
I keep old jewelry just like you do for the same purpose. But the hack on the spice grinder was the best,. I was just going to throw one away. They're expensive here in Florida. Sometimes especially to the tune of $3-5+! GREAT HACK,, TYVM❤
I water down all soaps
Reuse glass coke bottles as flower vases
Use old glass spice jars to hold small beads for making jewelry
Save dryer lent for fire starter
All great ideas!
Not sure if you saw the shop rite flyer this week. Today i bought a frozen shop rite turkey 18-20 pound turkey for $0.99 lb also the bone in chicken has very good prices also😀
The sausage was $1.99 a pound too! They had great sales!
I have never put garlic and apple cider vinegar in my chicken........anxious to try it. Thanks!
Making broth, also use a handful of pickling spices, lemon peel or cut up pieces , bay leaves also add flavor!
It must make it more like bone broth if it breaks down the bones.🙂
I use an old bread pan and index cards to organize my garden seed packets alphabetically.
That's a great idea!
We compost, too. Put it into the vegetable garden. Bought a plastic compost container from a garden shop to use.
Great use of those scraps!
I tried it Emmy and it came off even without the dryer. Thank you so much!!!
Wonderful!
I upcycle clothes and fabrics, by cutting the clothes apart into usable pieces of fabrics. Depending on the pieces they can be used for making other fabric items- baby bibs, pot holders, scrappy potholders, doll clothes, trims, and facings for other garments in process.
That's a great idea!
That grinder trick is great. Thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
Another one for the why did I never think of that file? I have Bunches of vintage jewelry from my mom and grandma and some are missing stones. I wear them anyway but now that my neck is getting thicker I need to lengthen them. Your jewelry repair tips are perfect. I also have a bag of broken rosaries to repair.
I always add a few tablespoons of AC vinegar or even white vinegar to my bone stock. It is supposed to draw more of the gelatin out of the bones to make the thicker more nutritious stock. I noticed a difference if I forget to add it.
So glad the video was helpful!
Hi Emmy, I loved your video. Great ideas. I repurposed a little wooden carpenter's toolbox which is open like a trough and has a long wood handle and compartments that my dad had made years ago for nails and screws. I turned it into a tea bag caddy. It fits on a corner of my shelf above my kitchen sink. It looks really cute with the different tea bags in their paper covers. And they're real handy to make a cup of tea! I always enjoy your and Paul's videos. They're such a treat. ♥ Sue
Thanks so much for sharing, Sue!
Wow Emmy, you saved me 9 mins with ur updated peppercorn grinder hack. I ran across a TH-camr showing how to do the exact same thing except it takes 10 mins to soak it in hot tap water then pull off.
Happy Birthday Emmy. I so love you!❤
So kind of you! Thanks so much!
Sat down to watch this video while waiting for my camner to cool which has quarts of chicken broth in it! What a coincidence. I save glass jars and reuse and repurpose them, eapecially spaghetti sauce jars. Great for taking some soup to a sick friend.
Yes, jars are our friends lol!
