    When a plumber is going to charge for an hour, but it takes less time than that, ask him to do other plumbing things around the house. I asked our plumber about that and he told me I had him for an hour, so what else could he do. I had him check each of our toilets to make sure they looked good…one had something loose that he fixed. He also tightened a few hot water handles that were loose. Little projects, but hopefully they were enough to keep things going a little longer before we need to call him again.

      Hi Linda, your plumber is very nice. Mine was so skillful that he finished his job in 20 min and hurried out of the house for the next 14 customers. I don’t think he will give an hour to each customer, otherwise he’ll have a very long day.

    An old-fashioned money saver we practice is sitting on our front porch in the evenings. My husband and I watch traffic, chat with one another, chat with neighbors walking by, and just destress. I usually have mending or a crochet project in the works too.

    The saying is: "A place for everything, and everything in its place." Where I've seen people go wrong is making those places inconvenient or forgetting to create them at all. If you always stack papers on the corner of your countertop - you OBVIOUSLY need a place to temporarily stash paperwork so you can go through it every week or two. Attach a cute basket to the side of the cabinet. That keeps everything accessible and "front of mind" and keeps your countertop tidy. I always take off my hat and purse when I come in and drop my keys at the door so that they're handy when I go out again. I have a small shelf for the keys and mail, with a hook under it for my purse. and several decorative hooks above it for my hats. Simple. Create the spaces that suit your habits, and your habits help rather than hinder you. Love your tips, Thanks, Emmie.

    My 5 minute time saving is setting a timer for 5 minutes and decluttering 'guilt-free' meaning- it doesn't matter who gave it to, how much it originally cost, if I haven't used it or I don't love it, or if it causes me stress- it goes in to the declutter box in the garage. I find someone who can use the items in the box and that makes me less stressed!

    I found a loaf of sliced french bread that was half off. It took me 5 minutes to mix up some garlic butter, smear it on the bread and put the buttered slices on a baking sheet to freeze. When frozen, I put them back in the original bag that I saved. Now, I can take out what I need for my husband and I. It took no time at all!

    I agree with you. I had work done on my truck and asked if they had a senior citizen discount, he said since I was so nice they'd take $100.00 off. Never hurts to ask the worst they can do is say no. I found also at our local coo- op they have to charge you five percent more if you use a debit or credit card,, so I use cash and actually spend less.

    • @FrugalMoneySaver
      @FrugalMoneySaver  ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Yes! That up charge for credit cards is creeping in everywhere

    • @kathy3178
      @kathy3178 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's because the banks charge the smaller businesses higher fees than the bigger businesses to accept credit/debit cards. They can't absorb those fees with all the other increases in the costs of running a business. We buy equipment from a local bee keeper store. She had to start charging 3% for card use and quit giving discounts for cash. Her wholesale cost has increased, she is trying to keep her prices down as best as she can.

    Great tips! Some other 5 min or less things I do: make my bed every morning. It sets me up in a good mood and there’s nothing better than falling into a nicely made bed after a long day. I wipe down the bathroom sink and toilet each morning and sweep the floor. Keeps it looking nice and not getting grimey. When I get home from the grocery store & have bought components for salad, i make the salad right away (undressed) and put it in the fridge w/ a paper towel to absorb moisture. Then I have salad at the ready & ingredients don’t go to waste.

    Great tips. My five minute time saver is making our bed every morning and opening all the curtains and the windows in the house. I set a timer for five minutes at night to shower and shave my legs. I give myself seven minutes on the nights I wash my hair. I put a cup of cold water from our fridge in the microwave every morning for three minutes to make my instant coffee. While the microwave is going, I empty and refill our dog's water and food and I change her puppy pad before the microwave is done. I'm always thinking of ways to be more efficient.

    Several of these tips really hit home for me. Ants showed up in my kitchen double sink for the first time in 17 years of living in this house. I spread some peppermint oil around both drains. I’ll try the orange infused vinegar on my counters. I now keep my sinks empty. Dirty dishes get rinsed and go straight to the DW. I run the DW about once a week.
    I planned to make a peanut butter sandwich for lunch the next day and notice the jar lid was loose (it was on the counter instead of put away). Ants were in the peanut butter jar! Luckily, it was a small jar and close to empty. It would have been worse if the jar was large and nearly full.
    I also buy flowers at the grocery store. When the flowers are for myself, I look for them on clearance. Several times lately, I’ve purchase large bouquet for about $10 with enough stems to fill one large vase with roses and greens and another large vase with lilies and other mixed blooms. My daughter also brought lilacs from her bush and I just love those. I noticed you had some lilacs on your counter, too. Love the heavenly scent.

    I would give the broken taco shell chips a light spritz of oil so the seasoning adheres better. Great use-up idea. I have done this with extra corn tortillas I have. I quarter them, spritz with a little oil, add salt and bake until golden and crisp.

    Great video as always! Here are a couple things I do on a regular basis. I keep separate lists of food and non-food staples on my phone. I mark which items need to be restocked as needed and do a full inventory check once a month. I never run out of items and always have a backup in case I run out. As my storage is extremely limited, I only have one of an item in storage for when I run out. For example, toothpaste. I will have one open tube and one backup tube. When I finish one and move the other one up to use it, I put it on my list to restock. For most items, both food and non-food items, I use the generic/store brand so it ends up being cheaper for me to get one item, when needed, instead of a sale where I would buy 3-5 items. I just don’t have the storage room so bulk purchases are not advantages to me. Another thing I do is to go through my house on a routine and continual basis, starting at the front door, or starting from the left of the doorway, I go around a room, declutter and clean (similar to your 5 minute declutter routine). It sort of like spring cleaning but on a continual basis. Some days I will take 5 minutes and some days I take 30 minutes, it depends on my schedule and my mood that day. Every week, on the day before trash day, I walk around my entire house looking for things to throw away (or to donate). Doing this once a week allows me to take note of the things I need to use or get rid of (along the lines of just-in-case items). I clean out my car when I get home, no matter where I’ve been. I love a clean car! I keep one shelf in my fridge for leftovers. My grandsons and my roommate know that if it on that shelf, they can eat it. I also have fresh fruit & vegetables ready to go and my grandsons know they can always eat them. I also keep one cupboard shelf with their favorite snacks so they know anything on that shelf is theirs. They always ask me first but I make sure I have things ready for when they are here. They are 11 & 13 and are here 1-3 times a week. I keep a list of home projects that I need to work on. Then as time and money allow, I start working on projects. Today I am replacing the rollers on my shower door and will clean the doors and tracks. I will also recaulk where needed. I am also working on my yard and garden as time and weather allows (is spring here yet or are we still in winter?? 😂) My big job this coming summer is to paint my kitchen cabinets and then update my counters.

    "Just in case" items are typical for the mindset of poor people. If you know you could buy one if you needed it, you could and would get rid of at least 2 or3 of those blankets.
    You might want to put one of them in the trunk of your car. It is good for emergency.

    I label my containers that I have put my leftovers in. I use a sharpie marker and blue or green painters tape, or even plain masking tape. I put the date and what's inside. (One time I forgot and my husband reheated his dinner. He said the "rice" tasted off. When I went to check, he had taken the container with my unsweetened cooked oatmeal. 😂😂 ) By labeling and dating, we know what it is and when it was cooked. No mystery dishes, or scratching our heads wondering when we cooked something. Saves time and money.

    Hi Emmy, Paul and Dixie. Loved this video. An idea to control your just in case pile of quilts is to get the air storage bags. I got some at dollar store or maybe can find at thrift store. It will make that pile down to size of one of those quilts. So many great hints. Helps to keep house tidy, will eliminate build up and cut down on having to do heavy-duty housework.

    Hi Emmy and Paul, Hope you are enjoying still the little house and getting lots accomplished. A quick 5-minute pick up is to wipe down my ceiling fans. Best time is right before I strip the linens to wash them. That way, any dust falls down onto the sheets to be washed. Also, I have a bowl on our hutch which easily becomes my catch-all for papers to be filed or otherwise to be dealt with. Once a week, usually on bill paying day, we go thru that bunch of stuff.
    And Emmy, a thought on perhaps a future video: could you go over some TH-cam basics? For instance, do you get yt credit when we like or comment on others' comments? Thank you! Barb

    Wonderful tips!! One thing I do if frying meats, not bacon, I fry mine in water! It turns out beautiful and so delicious. With my spices I arrange my so different.. my spices I use the most is in front and layer the others higher in back so you see what you have. These are in an order as what we use them for. Wired I know but it works for us!! Emmy I am so guilty of making a pile of things on the end of the table!! I’m really trying to break everyone’s habit! Also just in case! I’m getting better . I’m just being honest. One thing with putting lids back on along with when you have squeeze containers take time to give it a quick wipe!! The other things you mentioned I do. My son when he went on house calls for a co. he worked for he always ask if there was anything else he could do for them. Telling them the co. Charges for one hour. He felt it was really unfair not telling them. Then everyone started asking for him to be sent for any maintenance!! He did not tell the co.!! Lol!!!

I'll bet yours is clean and tidy. 😂. And Emmy! Please tell me how I can quit saving those wonderful FAGE yogurt containers!! I use them in the freezer, but do I really need every single one?? This was an informative video, Emmy and Paul. I’ve never considered doing 5-minute clean up sessions; I look at the bathroom or at the kitchen and feel very overwhelmed. I’m hoping this idea of 5-minute sessions will be something that can spark motivation to at least get started on the problem areas in our home. I will say that ever since we had my husband’s bathroom remodeled, he is very careful to wipe down the ceramic tile shower walls at the end of each shower. Emmy, my whole house is a 'just in case' pile. LOL Actually I have spent the last two weeks (along with my daughter) cleaning and going through things. I've taken 3 trunk loads of things to Goodwill and tossed about 8 bags of garbage.....organized the rest. I have one room to go!!
    I love these tips!
    I do what I call 'picking up' at the end of each day. I walk through our house from one end to the other, looking for any disarray and putting things right. I empty trash cans, put things back where they go, and unplug any chargers or other things that need unplugged. This keeps our home fairly tidy (we REALLY live in our home so it's never super tidy....it's comfortable) and only takes a few minutes.
    God bless!

    Blankets aren’t made the way they used to be so I agree with keeping older quilts and blankets you either have or find at the thrift store. One thing I learned from the channel ‘Clutterbug’ is to give yourself a space or a bin or box/bag - and allow yourself to fill that space. Once full you can’t go more than that. If you find something you really love then you can edit your collection. Father God provides for us all like the loving Father He is. It’s a blessing to be able to collect, keep, edit and give away when time. ❤

    Emmy, your just incase quilts, if you can get some bags that you suck the air outta- not sure the name- maybe space saver bags. I use these and then you can suck all the air out or a lot of it and they will be kept clean until you do need them, one in each bag will mean you only open one use wash and dry and return to bag keeping everything clean. And they save so much room. Hope this helps you.

    A money-saving tip: I love smoothies, but I don’t want to buy them in a shop! I used to get one occasionally from Costco for $2.99, but even that seemed superfluous. I invested in a great, economical blender (Ninja Twisti - the same one my boyfriend has used at his house for a long time), and I make smoothies with frozen bananas, fruit from my fruit trees, dates from Costco, and fruit I find on sale. I freeze fruit whenever necessary, so it won’t go bad before I can use it. I also add ingredients such as oats, vanilla extract, and almond milk, which give my smoothies added flavor, texture, nutrients, and fiber.
