The easiest way to decrease the amount spent on food is to stop wasting food! I am currently doing a "no-waste" month. It has made for some really "interesting" meals this month, but it has really made me aware of how much we normally would waste each month.
Absolutely!! You are so right! I have made many videos on zero food waste! It’s amazing when you become conscious of food waste! Thank you so much for watching!
I know we waste a lot of food in my home. As I make dinner I think, "Oh, that is not enough food." So I'll make additional sides, or add extra ingredients. And then by the end of the week I'm throwing everything. Grrrr! So what I am doing is only cooking 3 times a work week. We will see if it works.
To offset the citrus price, use the peels to make marmalade or homemade cleaning solution (soak in vinegar for a couple of weeks). Frugal Jo's channel has a great, easy marmalade recipe. Thanks for the inspiration!
I'm a newer subscriber and so appreciate your grateful heart, enthusiasm and common sense! Sometimes I feel like an alien because we don't live to consume. Sure, now and again, we enjoy a treat, just like anyone else. However, our focus is typically, "Look at the abundance we have and how can we share? How can we best utilize these blessings, etc?" Take care and thanks for the time and love you and Paul put into your videos.
Thank you for showing how this challenge can be done! It does make sense to shop at home first. I have taken a picture of my pantry shelves and can reference it so easy when building a grocery list. I also keep a running list of items I run out of so I can purchase at next trip to grocery store which helps keep a plan in place. Thank you for your enthusiasm!
Will try the sweet potato burritos! Looks wonderful! And, I have everything to make these! Thanks Emmie! You're awesome! I just love this channel! :) Dawn @ Rich & Dawn in MN :)
I like that idea for $40.00,, challenge, its only me, my husband died on active duty.so it's only me and my Yorkie, dog, Diamond,in my house. but my family members, are always challenging one another on saving on food, groceries, and cleaning items, our mother spends the less on groceries, but we all are using up the things we have in the pantry, fridge, &freezer before we buy more items.we all keep basic items; like flour, sugar, tea, coffee, butter. and when there are good prices we stock up,on basic essentials. American families waste to much food,so you have help me alot with different food ideas ,& and new ones,so thank you,we are blessed to have a mother who is a retired dietitian, and has taught us alot and at 80yrs.young is still cooking and feeding people in need in the community. We are richly "Blessed "!
I started following from Money Mom and love both of your content. I'd love to see more videos about meal prepping in the morning when it's warm. Be well.
Another great video, will try the tomato sauce. Where we shop in UK the store always put boxes with fruit and veg near its sell by date in and charges In your money $1.50 ish. Last week I had bag of carrots. Bag potatoes, honey dew melon, pineapple, lettuce, cucumber, celery and some tangerines, pears and a few other bits. Great value. You cant guarantee what's in the box but well worth shopping early to make sure you get one.
I have discovered vegetarian cookbooks and my favorite one is the moosewood restaurant cookbook. They have some wonderful easy recipes that take under a half hour to make. The recipes are from their restaurant in upstate New York. They have a recipe in there for sweet potato tacos where you take the raw sweet potato and peel it and put it in a food processor to grind it. It looks like ground beef in texture and then you cook it and add the taco sauce and it is absolutely wonderful.
THANK YOU for bringing up the USDA Food Plan tables! I also budget for FOOD ONLY in the food category in my budget. Household items and personal items are not food and not part of the calculation. I actually don't count alcohol in my food budget, either, unless I will cook with it. That which only gets consumed as a beverage I budget for separately - it just keeps the FOOD/sustenance amounts separate and clean. I appreciate the idea of using your pantry/fridge/freezer in addition to the weekly budget - I think that's how most of us are operating anyway. I also am not vegan/vegetarian, but I do like developing my skill set in those areas since they are often/usually less expensive meals than those with meat. I love meat, but there are a lot of good ways to cut back on that expensive budget item.
It’s great to save on what you need to eat now, but right now, like never before, we all need to build a stockpile of food that is with a longer expiration date, to use later. Especially for those who don’t grow anything in their backyards.
This was a great challenge :):) I am up there spending money on groceries YIkes!! Those sweet potato burritos sound delicious!! I think you got some great healthy items in the haul!! Enjoyed watching!!
Thank you so much Crystal! We were just spending way too much! We have a nice surplus so I think it's time we start using some of it lol! Thanks for watching!
Nice I’m learning to save on my Groceries so this was very helpful for me because I want to go a little bit on spending a lot on them. Greetings from Berlin Germany 🇩🇪
We are trying to cut back as much as possible on food. Prices have gone up on almost everything. I think the main thing we want to accomplish is to use up some of the food we already have here. Thanks so much for watching!
Such great timing I’m watching this now! I’m going thru something odd in my life - feeling food challenged by the pandemic - feeling like we don’t have enough but WE DO! It’s like we have too much? Have you heard of such a phenomenon? Anyway I am using what we have (A LOT) and my goal is just milk this week as we have enough eggs and bread for the coming week 🤑😎
It's funny when I hear the usda numbers..... I think back to my childhood growing up very poor with no father and a mother that was an addict. Me and my three siblings were left home alone with very little food in the house and I remember spreading ketchup packet on a slice of bread and putting a little bit of cheese and that was pizza. As an adult I promised myself I would never allow my children to live like that. And honestly I could probably feed our family for a year with the food I have on hand or grow in my garden. We always never knew where our next meal is coming from so being Frugal really wasn't an option I mean there just wasn't any food in the house. But it's made me always have that secret fear of not having enough food that I carry even as an adult. It's probably why I have an industrial vacuum sealer and two deep freezers two refrigerators and a incredibly well-stocked pantry and I grow a huge Garden and I preserve much of the food either by canning or dehydrating or freezing. Many years ago I planted fruit trees and so I process apples pears and plums like you would not believe. But it showed me how much people could also reduce their food budget and eat very well if they just bothered to grow a little of their own food from seed. I feed a total of 7 people for very little money considering the size of my family and 5 are teen boys . My daughter and myself had you not eat nearly as much as they do and we all eat well. Is also very comforting to know when the pandemic came I did not need to leave the house for anything. Even if I didn't grow my own food , shopping the sales is the only way to purchase food and stay within budget. And we simply just don't eat out unless it's a special occasion
Little Squirrel I agree grew up very similar. I have a well stocked pantry with a lot of food. Someone teased me about it today. I eat WFPB now. Planning on good sized garden. In past have grown all of my own food. Meat and vegetables. Raised dairy goats so made my own cheese. My own eggs etc. There is so much you can do to save money if it is a priority.
I think I want to try this next time we shop. I've spent more of the grocery budget than I would like, but we did some meat stock-ups. We fell into that trap of freezer meals for my hubby and some frozen burgers for the kids (4 family-size meals, 1 package of frozen cheeseburger sliders, and a package of sausage and biscuit for $25). I've been working on making our menu plan, and I'm baking a turkey in a few days, so a lot of the stuff I've bought will stretch our groceries out to possibly 3 weeks instead of 2.
@@FrugalMoneySaver Yes, since this past year was the first year with a freezer, when I found them on a discount I bought 2 of them. Some places have turkeys really cheap, less than $.50 a lb. But we don't have any of those stores around. So I thought outside the box. We have a Target (not a super Target, but a small Target) about 40 minutes away. They have an app that has coupons on it. The turkeys were half price. The sale price was $.98 a lb, so half was $.48 a lb. I found the 2 smallest bird I could find, and it worked out to about $12 for both of them.
I have been eating a WFPB diet which has helped many health problems. I spend $200/monthly for 1 person. That includes supplements, cleaning products and laundry items. I have been doing this for a year. Not eating/buying meat saves a lot of money!
Also, depends on area, and any dietary restrictions.because food prices in chicago are not food prices in atlanta. If you.are a vegan, that might cost more, depending on where you shop.in my area,we have whole foods, aldi, jewel, mariano
Easy way, dont waste food. Use food pantries if needed.its not the greatest, but it does help when you have a really, really lean month. Stop going for the lobster, steak, shrimp, caviar, etc.dial down your expectations. Pasta.rice.beans.lentils. Use ground turkey instead of ground beef. Buy the huge packs of meat on.sale. Cook large batches of food, break it down into portion.contol sized containers, date, contents, freeze. Buy items that stretch for multiple meals, rather a one and done. If able, grow your own herbs and produce. Learn how to can produce, how to make jerky to preserve foods. Check your refrigerator and freezer.check settings.food spoiling is often due to the fridge not cooling well,or freezing foods.also, check the rubber seals around doors.
Nice job budgeting and saving. Like you, we have a well stocked pantry and freezer. My husband drinks diet soda, so that would gobble up $7-10 a week (I drink water and hot tea brewed at home). That would make it difficult to have a $40 per week budget.
Using up my excess I got at the beginning of the pandemic. I am soaking some dried mushrooms to make a mushroom soup. Next I will prep salad ingredients for quick side or lunch. Bits of leftovers for a pasta salad and I have garlic stuffed olives to add great flavor. Bacon bits for loaded baked potatoes 👌😁. I am trying to not buy Anything this week!
Impressive Emmy! You did an amazing job grocery shopping! I dont know if i could get it down to 40.00 per week or not. But i would definitely like to take the challenge. We only shop once a month, so i wont be going again for a couple of weeks. I will let you know how i do when i go. Thanks for such a motivating video. God bless!
Great challenge and something I will be doing for hubby and I! Thankfully we do garden and grow a lot of our produce plus we have a neighbor who grows things we don't so we share with them and they share back so produce is covered for us! We've also cut back on the number of meals where we have meat and we don't even miss it!
Oh how nice! I love the idea of sharing with your neighbors and them sharing with you! That’s great!! We have a small garden and I’m hoping we will get some yummy veggies this year! Thanks for watching!
I found the FDA chart you were talking about and see that at thrifty the price per person has gone up from 5 dollars a day, which was a big thing in the news a few years ago. So Thrifty for people over 50 is now $6.27 a day and under 50 is $6.60. However, if you remember all the news and famous people were taking the 5 dollar a day challenge, but they always seem to do it wrong. They took 5 dollars and tried to eat for a day, when that was not how the system works. They figure one person 5 dollars a day x 30 days which was $150 for the month. The 150 was then either a once a month payment or perhaps 2 payments of 75. A thrifty person would be able to survive on this but we don't teach thrift or frugality anymore. If you didn't learn it from someone you knew/know you had to struggle to figure it out. That is why TH-cam videos teaching these skills are so important.
Forgive me I said FDA I meant the USDA. I made the correction in the description of my video. Here is the link fns-prod.azureedge.net/sites/default/files/media/file/CostofFoodApr2020.pdf. Thanks so much for watching
Our weekly food budget is $50 a week for 4 adults. None of us qualify for food stamps. We get very few fresh fruits and vegetables. Its terrible for me because I am diabetic and healthy meats and things are too expensive so Im having to eat things that are dangerous for me. But for the time being we dont have a choice. Its tough.
I have a budget of $400 a month for two of us. I usually spend around $340 so the surplus I put in the savings. 😀 I might have to try this $40 a week challenge. Meal planning saves so much money.
During non-camping season I stock up on sale items like soups, pasta, dry goods and store them in a container for camping season. I also like to buy the 50% off Christmas food items to save for camping like the cheese and sausage kits, sparkling cider and popcorn tins--unopened those things last a long time! I used to spend $200 on groceries just for camping and my husband would always say camping is a cheap getaway. But now with stocking up, it has become a cheaper vacay.
I could certainly try. That would be a great video idea. It will take a bit of planning but I could probably do it in the next couple of weeks! Thanks for watching!
How many stores do you usually shop at? I find myself getting overwhelmed with the number of stores in my area - each with a couple of good deals. Do I go to 3-4 stores or stick with 1-2?
That is really up to you. It’s whatever works for your budget. I usually don’t go to more than two stores. I will pick up the loss leaders at Acme and do the bulk of my shopping at ShopRite. It’s really a personal decision. Thanks for watching so much!
Wow the seems impossible to me, for us two we spend $615 a month and this includes all paper products and I eat a whole foods plant based diet, so I wonder if the fresh fruits and vegas is just more expensive
I just made sweet potato, bean, rice, onion, peppers, salsa burritos yesterday so it was funny to find them on your video today. They are so filling and delicious. I really like Hannaford’s Taste of Inspiration Corn & Chili Salsa to spice up burritos and lots of other dishes. You can find it on sale at times and then I stock up. I will try the $40 grocery challenge! Thanks for the idea. One great money saver for my area is the Freihofer Thrift Stores where all sorts of bread products are on sale for super low prices. It is because the products often will expire soon but we just pop them in our freezer and use as we go. They are all great quality.
What I do to cut expenses with meat is I buy chicken frames straight from the farmer. He sells them for 1/2 the price per pound of a whole chicken. I then make chicken broth from those frames. It is less spendy to buy meaty bones and make meat stock with it than to buy whole cuts of meat. Then you are not missing out on the nutrition by cutting meat out altogether. Meat has tons of amino acids, collagen, and absorbable nutrients that plants cannot provide. I also buy meaty beef bones for a fraction of the cost of stew meat or a roast. It is just as good, and so much cheaper. Then, when the farm store has a sale for chicken parts at $1/lb, I buy everything I can get my hands on.

Its tough.
Awww thank you! So glad I made you smile! Thanks for watching!
I’m hoping you found a food pantry in your area so you can get more choices for healthy food.
Menu sounds delicious
Thank you!! I appreciate you watching😊!
Fair play on the challenge 🙈

I can definitely accept the challenge for eating out of the pantry and freezer but… Can't do without meat in my family. 😀
LOL! Paul is the same way about meat! I told him 5 out of 7 nights to have meat is pretty fair! Thanks so much for watching!
I’m doing no spend November. I actually started today. I’m going to live on my supplies.
Oh Linda good for you! I have never done a whole no spend month! Let us know how you're doing!
I have a budget of $400 a month for two of us. I usually spend around $340 so the surplus I put in the savings. 😀 I might have to try this $40 a week challenge. Meal planning saves so much money.
You are so right about meal planning Jean! It really does save money! Thanks so much for watching!
Hi Emmy!
Hey Miss Kelli!!

LOL! God bless you as well! Thanks Shirley!
Do you follow the dirty dozen list now for what to buy organic? Just curious. It helps me a lot.
I do try to follow the list but some are so cost prohibitive. Organic cherries are just so expensive. We do our best! Thanks so much for watching!
Is a link to the pantry printable available anywhere?
Going camping this next week end I'm going to try to stay on the 40dollar , wish me luck! God bless!!!
Oh fun!! Let Me know how you do! God bless you too! Thanks for watching!
So smart! That's a great tip! Thanks for watching!
This is good.. realistic also! Ps.. I’m from Ireland.. have you Irish roots.. you look Irish! ☘️

Would you do a week of meals for 40 dollars not using what you have in your pantry just for disabled seniors ho have found these times are hard thanks
I could certainly try. That would be a great video idea. It will take a bit of planning but I could probably do it in the next couple of weeks! Thanks for watching!
❤❤❤❤
Thank you
How many stores do you usually shop at?
Oh definitely! Fresh fruits and veggies especially if organic are extremely expensive!
Those banana is expensive for 2 . I get mine .33 lb
Here in New York they are between 59 and $.69 a pound
Sounds great! Thanks for watching!
meat has been getting pricey! i try not to cook meat more than 1 day a week, it"s also healthier for you
You got that right! Thanks so much for watching!
