@@strokerace14bp I used to tow my Seadoo with a 2000 Ford Focus ZX3 w/manual transmission. Never had an issue pulling it out of the water.

Just got to say don’t want to be around them people that can’t handle a boat at the docks. Go out on a day when no one is around and practice docking help yourself out.

In case you were wondering, the tow package on the VW is optional equipment. And no, you should never buy a used VW with a tow hitch.
My wife has yelled at me so many times for not simply telling her what she needs to do and then I'm frustrated when she didn't know what I needed... best advice I can come up with is to make sure your crew knows what is expected of them, especially at the dock and on the ramp. Also buy 4 dock lines and 4 fenders at least people! Come on!
Good advice. As a passenger I sometimes ask what I should do while docking. I’m relieved when they say “just sit there and don’t move”!
Yeah, I ruined an outstanding day out with family by getting frustrated with them not helping. While loading the boat on the trailer it dawned on me, I never briefed them what I needed done. I ate crow, apologized and felt like crap for hours afterwards.
The best advice is just to communicate. If you want something done, ask.
it’s amazing how people can spend all that money on a boat but not $10 a piece for a few dock lines…
And LONG enough dock lines and decent sized fenders - and oh yeah while you are at the marine store buy a BOAT HOOK! I get anxiety watching these people trying to dock without these basic items.
Oh and keep cool, keep a smile on your face and COMMUNICATE with your crew what you are doing! Assign tasks to your crew!
You will have a lot more fun!

I have a question I am not a boater but shouldn't that child have a life vest on?
Many States require children of certain ages an below have PFDs worn while vessel is underway ( moving ) … Federal Coast Guard requires all children 13 and under to wear a PFD while under way…!!!

Listen folks never ever have a crew member stand straight up in the bow area when approaching anything at any speed. Always crouch down until you know you are secure to where you are docking

I have been boating for over 40 years now. I've always said, if you have nothing to do take a chair and a cooler to the boat ramp, it's better than a comedy show! The way I've always put my boat in is get the boat ready put the crew in the boat, have my wife back us in, deep enough to first start the boat to make sure the motor starts. Then back up enough to float us off. Drive off and pick her up at the end of the dock. Then just reverse it when you come back! Very easy you don't get in anyone's way. And best of all you don't get on someone's TH-cam page!
Also , best to teach/show/assign what you want the crew to do during all phases of trailering and docking the boat… And for holy sakes, prepare your dock lines before approaching the dock…!!!
That last captain leaves the helm, pushes her out of the way, jumps like an idiot, then doesn't even have a line, let alone one tied to the boat. 🤦🏻♂️
🤣🤣 I went back a few seconds because I thought I missed him dropping the line when he jumped, but no, no line to begin with. Even if it's his first time, a move like that may justify a cerebral deficiency evaluation.
And then he tied his ratchet strap to the railing instead of a cleat.

This is the type of boater that will run into you while your anchored at the sandbar and blame you for it.
It's like nobody ever has a clue what effect wind and current will have on their approach.
I was always in the habit of stopping in the vicinity while aimed at the dock in neutral to see effects and observe others. Plan from there...
Oh, and my wife is the best first mate ever - she'd have all 4 dock lines on and ready with the boat hook before we were ever near the dock.

@RudyF6... Exactly...it's like engineering. Determine wind speed and direction, current if any, and calculate your angle to dock.
The Detroit river has some pretty hellish docks with the currents especially when windy.

You are right - one of the worst was Duffys Tavern in Amherstburg (been closed for a number of years) was a special case to dock at, heavy current and man you HAD to come into the dock hot and then full stop with heavy throttle in reverse! Always made it OK but boy a few times my heart was in my throat!!!! 😆😆😆😆

I have been watching you videos guys for a some time now - I wonder why all these people 1. do not use fenders and 2. do not have order on a lines when they approach docks. This makes life ALOT easier. Not to mention having a decent boat hook (aka pike pole) on board. This one can literally save your boat or even a life on water...
I’m new to boating and learned I need them the other day. I’ll be purchasing some pretty soon. It does make life easier.
I’d say to the boat fenders most of these boats really don’t need them. They do have rubber on the docks and along the boat, if you’re not slamming into them you shouldn’t have to worry about it. Also depends greatly on the boat and wraps or paint job on it. Most of these boats don’t look to expensive that Iv seen on this channel though! But the poles do help
I have seen everything from "para cord" to "ratchet straps" used as dock lines on this channel. Pretty sad.
I recently used my boat hook at the loading dock & this woman on another boat saw it & said, "𝑾𝒐𝒘, 𝒕𝒉𝒂𝒕'𝒔 𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒍𝒍𝒚 𝒔𝒎𝒂𝒓𝒕" & I was amazed that she thought having a boat hook --- a boat hook! ----- was so dang smart! I consider it to be standard gear, but that's me.
95% of boaters need lessons in boating....
In Canada, if you are standing on the dock when another boat approaches. You automatically help. So American to just watch.
Same thing in Sweden. You always help. And people who´s docking have fenders out and lines ready. I believe this is a Florida thing. All americans can't be this bad at boating... :)
@@johanankarback6821 ... I think it may be a saltwater thing. Up here on the Great Lakes if you have six people on a dock, all six will be grabbing lines and helping to secure the boat. Then if you're in the mood, meet them in the bar and buy a round.
@@ohioguy215 That is true...I have sailed the Great Lakes (all but Superior) for 50+ years and that has been my experience both US and Canadian side.
Years ago the wife and I and our kids had a no start on our auxiliary diesel so had to Sail it to the dock. We radioed the dock master and let her know we where taking the end float and would she keep it open. When we approached we were able to luff up, drop the sails and perfectly ease the boat to the dock and just hand off our dock lines to about 10 boaters who saw what we were doing. To my wife and I it was no big deal but a wife at the dock looked at her really huge husband and said "....he docked his boat without an engine AND without yelling at anyone....why can't you do that?...." she walked away. We all had a pretty good laugh at that and still do. All the folks on the dock were power boaters and most of them piled onto our boat with beer and snacks and we had a pretty great evening!

I could be captain of the the boat ALLL day long and drink a 18 pack of beer and do a hell of a lot better AND safer than these people. So sad people like this have permission to drive boats risking lives because they simply need to be taught. GREAT CONTENT!

The last boat in the video was a hoot ! No dock lines ready , skipper jumps the big gap to the dock , he ties a cargo strap to the railings and the stern is drifting off the dock and no dock line is visible for the stern ! Sell the boat , landlubber !

There are countries with mandatory boet licenses. Depends mostly on size of boat and or power rate of engine. It looks like there is nothing like that in the US. Wonder thats it why it hurts seeing everyone and their grandmother doing very stupid things on those ramps.

@@andriessluiter4269 There are licensing requirements _IF_ you are a charter or other commercial vessel. Or over a certain tonnage, although I don't know what that limit is.
Florida now requires boating license for anyone born after January 1, 1989
It’s amazing to me how little people on the boat help docks boat. I’ve come from a lifetime of being on boats and it’s always been the unspoken rule that everyone on the boat (or near on shore) help dock, mooring, or getting the boat on a trailer. Some people’s kids I guess…
I agree. These people are likely just as useless in all aspects of life.

it's a one person job, you end up with too many chiefs not enough Indians. and my experience is that even with clear instructions nobody knows how to tie a knot around a pole or cleat.

I don't get why people don't do pre-briefs before getting in a boat (you have "x" job when we dock). To include, before docking, I'll take the boat in like "x" depending on the current. Communication, communication, communication.
Always remember one of the important boating rules... Don't go faster than you want to hit something at, be it the dock or another boat! 👍⚓ velocity + weight = lots more damage Simply reduce one of the variables and it will = less, if any damage. This is why around the docks, commercial ships go so ungodly slow while docking, and you know they are in a hurry! 😎

If you are ever in a situation where you can’t get the wind or4 current to push you in, get a bow line on right away then point you motor towards the dock. This will pull you right in so you can put a rear line on the dock.

Why don’t people in Florida have or use a sliding tongue on their trailers. In Hawaii, a lot of trailers use the sliding tongue, where it extends another 10 feet, and use slide it back when towing. Seems like a good idea for those slippery ramps, your might get away with a 2wd truck also. And the sliding tongue is probably an easy add add on, probably cheaper in Florida too, compared to the cost in Hawaii. Was just curious. Also surprised that a lot of these boaters don’t have their dock lines ready, or they have separate lines for the front and back, why not just one lone line. Just curious.

Have 4 lines set up before you dock so you don’t have to move lines. Advise your crew of their rolls. Stop your boat so you know the effects of wind and current then position the boat for a straight approach if conditions allow. With twins, use both motors. Always use the furthest outside motor when turning for a tighter turn. One motor at a time.

At least he tied it to the hand rail, so as not to over-stress the deck cleat
Knock harbor freight Orange ratchet straps all you want but at least stay operate and function the way they're supposed to. I bought a nice set from advanced discount Auto and they're the damndest things to try to get to work with you. They look real nice and they're good quality just they don't function right they don't ratchet when you want them to and they don't unbuckle when you want them to but they look real nice and they're heavy duty they're green. They're expensive but I was very disappointed by them I had some credit on a return that I had to take as credit and I bought some of those they're just real contankerous to mess with. Just being honest

I just had to point out you know the nicer premium advanced discount Auto parts ones they look damn nice they're aluminum they look awesome they do hold if you get them to work right. They just seem defective to me.

Docking is like having an engineering degree. You determine the wind direction and speed, current if any, and calculate your angle to dock. You're either a natural or you take four years to learn.

Just amazing how few people ever seem to want to lend a hand from the dock. Where I live, any sight of a boat coming in evokes the help of anyone who is just standing around. And on the second boat, no freaking lines.

I don't know what about you guys, but I always prefer to have the wind pulling me off from the dock. Where I live, the wind gets pretty bad, and that way, if u make a mistake you can just stop everything and it will throw u away instead of hitting your boat.
An area that is not much more than a sandbar and the "boaters" (term used loosely) do not have a clue.
I've boated in Florida and elsewhere for decades and the first thing you do us have the correct equipment, know how to use, enlist the help of crew and most importantly, everything in slow motion.
The videos do provide for some very amusing entertainment though.
If I ever drive a VW that's not a hugely modified bug, with a serious Porsche motor upgrade, please kill me.

I boat alone 80% of the time as I’m a fisherman.
However when I do have a crew that want to ‘assist’, I always have them stand in the centre of the boat while approaching the dock with fenders out.
Particularly in smaller boats, there’s is nothing more frustrating than trying to dock a boat that is listing 45 degrees with everyone reaching for the pier. It throws all your throttle and steering inputs out the window and only makes life harder for the captain. In fact, I usually insist that they stay in the centre of the boat until I have secured her….then they can assist in unloading their stuff out of the boat.
Not always possible with bigger boats of course that can’t be single-handed….but then the listing is less of an issue in that case also.

I would never buy a boat from Florida! I swear nobody can drive. I have been boating all my life in rough water docks and have never had issues like these people do.
I'm very picky on everything. I prefer to do everything myself and have a system. Most of the scratches and dings in my boat are from people trying to help.
Why are people so obsessed with connecting the bow line ???? The stern line is so much easier for so many reasons. On my 5 meter and 9 meter I always connect the stern line 1st. On the 11.5 meter I always connect the spring line 1st. The bow line is one of the last to connect.
Had a boss who pulled out an old picture to show me how he launched his 24ft boat back in the day. It was a freakin 1979 doge charger!
