People don't realize how hard boats slap water. My mom's friend was boating on a LAKE when they smacked a wave, upon landing the boat thrust up into her with enough force to break her spine. A year later she can only stand for 5 minutes. As a captain you have to know what you're doing
People don’t understand how hard water is at all. Even a body slapping it. At a certain speed, it’s like hitting concrete. People constantly underestimate the danger of water. It’s nuts because you think they’d figure it out by now.
It's hard to imagine what these boat owners are thinking letting people sit in the bow seats of a 20' boat with these size waves alone thinking your boat is big enough to handle it safely
Even a big boat. It doesn't matter. When you get into waves like that you tell people get your life jackets handy, get back here towards the back as far as you can, and find something substantial to hold on to. It will help keep the boat from stuffing also

One thing seems for sure. When the waves get large enough, you can stuff even some of the larger boats. You can definitely tell that experience (and SAFETY awareness)piloting a boat makes a huge difference on the bigger waters.
The "Mark 5" (Speed Racer) boat looked really cool. The only thing that could have improved its looks would have been a Tri hull instead of a Pickle. And, of course, if Chim Chim was hanging on with Spridle somewhere.
It's always good to know your limitations and when not to challenge them! it's always interesting to see how many people think going slower is going to help their problem when their already going to slow
I dunno but it seems that the way to manage is to be flexible with the power and power up the standing waves and ease down the other side. Gunning it looks dumb
@@RichardEnglander Yeah it gets tricky due to the force of the flow. If you power down to try and ride down the back side of a wave you run the risk of being caught in the flow while not being under power. The least ideal situation would be trying to recover from that momentary loss of control in the transition zone of the inlet so some people overcompensate by just going to full power which can get rather rough in a smaller boat as seen in so many of these videos! @@julesy321 each inlet entrance would be different, depth, design and wind direction. People just need to do there home work on each inlet. With most inlets, it's the water running out of the inlet, bigger the tide more moving water and this against an onshore wind creates this wave action. If you can move out of this tidal stream, as here to the north if the depth hallows, far safer.
Seen many an inlet here in FL. Never ceases to amaze me how crazy some people are willing to be coming and going through, especially at haulover, granted, the tidal differences and choppy conditions are pretty bad, but still..... Just damn.

This reminds me of crossing the bar of the Columbia river into the Pacific with my Dad in our 17 foot fiberglass boat in the "60's. He made everyone wear life jackets. What a pounding that boat took!
This is no comparison to the Columbia River bar. This is a 4 foot chop, and considered a rough day, at Columbia River bar this would be called almost flat calm.
Relatively new to boating here - could that first captain have done anything different (Trim up, go faster, stay in between the swells / time it better) to avoid the roller coaster, or was it just a bad idea to go out with a boat that small?
That Bayliner at 3:25 reminds me of the boat my grandparents took me out (I remember he was proud of the 150hp) on the lakes inTexas and I was scared to death going across them. I can’t imagine doing what they were!!!
Yeah my grandpa (I inherited it later) had a 16' Carolina Tri-Hull with a 115hp Mercury 2-stroke on it. The motor died so he spent $15,000 putting a new Mercury 115hp 4-stroke on it. It was way too much motor for that boat and the boat itself was a piece of junk. No idea why he didn't just buy a new boat. It was great for fishing though. Nice wide flat floor, and super stable on calm water. Not sad I got rid of it though. Had tons of fun on that boat as a kid and a teen, but I've got a much nicer boat now.
I am starting to think that skippers/boat owners should have a special licence that enables them to motor through this inlet when the conditions are like this!
The speed racer graphics were first class. As a 64 year old guy it was my addiction to watch that as a youngster. It truly was my inspiration that later got me into racing. I always knew after watching that program, that I wanted to be a race car driver. Ahh, the good ole days!
Really up to the driver to compensate for each on coming wave. An experienced and humble captain can adjust quickly to each wave and keep everyone safe.
You know it's a rough day when a decent sized Contender has issues 3:38 Also that Seavee did it to themselves. Too fast with following seas. And who the hell A) lets passengers sit up front in a 20' bowrider with no life jackets and B) lets people stand in your boat when going through haulover? WTF?
I love when a dink size boat comes out with over capacity persons, no life jackets on, and everyone sitting in the bow. Just hoping they make it out of haul over with hopes and dreams
Non boat owner here.... Question: Wouldn't it be better to set the trim tabs differently or go faster to avoid some of this? I'm sure the speed probably wouldn't help some of the smaller boats...
Coming from a former small boat owner, 1, I wouldn't have gone out, 2. sometimes small boats do better going slower then some of these did, just depends on conditions. It's a fine line that should come with experience.
Trim the bow up as high as it'll go. Go just fast enough to try to plow through with your bow pointing toward the sky. But when you hit an 8 foot wave with NO BACK (steep), there ain't nothing you can do, but fall off it, then stuff the bow into the next one..
If the wave is big enough and the boat is small enough there ain't a damn thing you can do. The smart thing is to check the wind and tides and don't try to run the inlet when they are at odds with each other. If you have to run a rough inlet find some big ass yacht or sportfisherman and follow through in their wake.
The biggest problem is how they are loading their boats, at the front, and the fact they are all bow riders. The other issue is the boats are too small for conditions. I have a non bow rider that can handle waves like this and yes trim helps a ton. Most boat owners dont know how to properly use it.
Haulover is a prime example of trying to run before you learned to walk! I’m not saying all, but the large majority of these people do not know how to safely operate a boat! How there is not 100 boats on the bottom amazes me!
I’ll never understand why people even attempt something like that in a boat that tiny. And the crazy part is I see it ALL the time. No regard for safety.
Can we just appreciate this dude got two different angles of the same boat in the video title?! Tripod + drone in 4K/60!? And he puts it right up front with no bullshit.
A boat only has so many beatings like that in it. But that first 20 foot open bow rider with those big people upfront with no lifejackets in those conditions was criminal. I don’t understand why given the video evidence that Captain wasn’t charged with reckless endangerment
Calm down. They are adults they make their own choices. You clearly don’t spend time on boats people don’t wear jackets all the time unless they are infants or small children.
When I was in my early 20s, we would take my 17’ Boston whaler out to Boca inlet to do battle. And yes I can admit that it wasn’t the brightest thing to do. But we never put anyone well being in danger. A lot of those people don’t have a clue and it’s truly amazing there’s not a lot of injuries
Everytime I watch one of these. I always go away wondering. Do these boat captains know what they're doing? Because most of them display poor judgement. Lack of any boat control. And a complete ignorance in navigating high seas and currents. 😱
In these situations, do you guys think the Captain should be held liable for any injury and medical expenses?
They are, all the injured person would have to do is hire a lawyer and the “captain” would be on the hook for everything.
Yep.
That would depend.

These people are just willy-nilly out for a BRUTAL joyride..not having a clue as to when and WHY to adjust for the conditions. There’s a lot more to just HAVING a boat..IF you want to have fun and/or survive.

The bigger the boat, the smoother the ride!
The deeper the vee
Yes
One thing seems for sure. When the waves get large enough, you can stuff even some of the larger boats. You can definitely tell that experience (and SAFETY awareness)piloting a boat makes a huge difference on the bigger waters.
That last boat was gorgeous!
Looked like a modern 1930’s runabout!
Seams to have had a lot of people on board....I bet that is a very comfortable boat. Very impressive!!

Wow the Angler Boat at 6:02 even when launched had the softest ride of them all.
I wonder why that is. I’ve never boated in the ocean and after seeing these videos I never will. Too dam ruff!
The "Mark 5" (Speed Racer) boat looked really cool. The only thing that could have improved its looks would have been a Tri hull instead of a Pickle. And, of course, if Chim Chim was hanging on with Spridle somewhere.

@@tommyboy051 not really. I don't have to buy girlfriends that turn in to wives that divorce you for having a boat.
It's always good to know your limitations and when not to challenge them! it's always interesting to see how many people think going slower is going to help their problem when their already going to slow
Problem is this inlet is deceiving at times, it has humbled me more than once:)
Usually there are atleast a few people on seadoos near the exit which work great as indicators for what the inlet is doing.
@@KWW0321 ah interesting
Could do with a gearbox that let you throw straight into and back out of neutral when you kept the engine revs up, it would be quite a kick through whatever drive train, but would mean that power could come back on super quick.
I dunno, looks like its a nightmare...
Any examples of people doing a classy job? Things I can learn from?
@@RichardEnglander If you search for good runs at this inlet you will find some solid examples. I like to think I am competent at getting in and out now but definitely have had some rough moments. When you see a rental though you know there is a solid chance for some entertainment!

That close up of the blue and white nortec captain right before the plunge was epic!
Boats are great fun and can be dangerous please do your best to be careful out there thanks for posting guys brought back memories
I’m surprised more people don’t use the north side of the inlet.
But then again, they load down the bow in rough conditions....so ...
I agree with that, but they seem to rather smash right through the middle.
just wondering if the North side of the inlet would be better than the South side and why? Does that apply to all inlets (like at Government Cut?)
@@julesy321 Shallower water and less wind. I think each inlets personality will be determined by that combination of circumstances.
Wow! That HCB... just parting the seas!
I enjoy the drone footage!
Seen many an inlet here in FL. Never ceases to amaze me how crazy some people are willing to be coming and going through, especially at haulover, granted, the tidal differences and choppy conditions are pretty bad, but still..... Just damn.
one of my lifegoals is riding the haulover inlet with an undermotorised boat. 😂 greetings from germany
Wherever i see a sea ray i always think:
A) it's going to sink
B) someone will break their ribs
C) will do a u-turn after 10mins
D) all of the above
That particular sea-ray handled the inlet way better than most of the other boats. Happened to be an inboard too. Hmmm....
Someone needs to teach the captain of that amazing blue Nor-tech that trimming up that high is absolutely the wrong thing to do. You effectively turn your 40’ into 25’ of usable hull and get the snot beat out of your boat. He should definitely give the boat to me.
In these sea conditions.... 100% Wrong.

Buy envoy 150 hp eltric outbard
4:20 Amazing how that HCB just cuts through those waves .
I am starting to think that skippers/boat owners should have a special licence that enables them to motor through this inlet when the conditions are like this!

This channel is pure genius.
None of these in these conditions. How can you trim up the bow when it's loaded with people. When conditions are very bad, DON'T GO OUT.
